ok, ok. so here’s what we know for certain about the delanceys:

-they work for the world as essentially paid grunts

-their father is a trolley worker, now on strike

-they are slightly above the newsies power-wise

aaaaaaand that’s about it, right? except, with uksies, we found one more thing- the change in clothes. and you may be thinking, “…that means nothing, emme,” which is fair. but (and this has been pointed out previously by numerous people, including @daveyfvckingjacobs) this does actually signify more! because in livesies, they match wiesel. in 92sies and uksies, they’re closer to the newsies themselves. meaning: their social and economical status is probably a lot shorter than a hop, skip, and a jump away from the newsies’.

and their father being a trolley worker? there was a reason they went on a strike, even if it was only briefly mentioned. they worked roughly 55 hours per week on average, and were paid pennies for the dangers they faced on a daily basis from the unpredictable tracks and cars. all of this just further reinforces the idea that the delancey brothers aren’t doing as well as people may think.

so, here’s what we’ve got: their father, who (unless they had a mother in the picture working at a factory) was likely the only breadwinner for their family for a number of years, worked a dangerous and unrewarding job until the brothers themselves could work (and, realistically? they probably started working in some form or fashion as young as the newsies did, or around 7-10). he then goes on strike with a union for better wages, taking his pay out of the picture, and leaving the little they make to provide for everyone they might potentially have in their family (and remember, they are at the bottom of the food chain. the only people below them are the newsies, and they aren’t technically paid by the world). and, if we’re going by livesies, they have to meet certain requirements to even be at that bottom; ie. their clothes, which probably took a large percentage of MULTIPLE of their paychecks (my reasoning for this is why would young boys of their standing spend money on nicer clothes if they’ve got greater needs? the answer: large corporations have sucked for centuries).
