Mod opinion: I hadn't heard of this sci fi novel before, but it sounds really interesting!

finding out that the author of an old vintage sci-fi book I just found yesterday and read in one sitting from the 70s is not only very much still alive but running his own little website and is totally chill with fan emails is almost indescribably firing neurons in my little fan brain. what do you mean there’s actually a not dead author out there (looking at you asimov) who has written some of the greatest and most influential sci-fi of all fucking time and I can talk to him. what do you MEAN by that. his email is RIGHT THERE and I CANNOT resist

David Gerrold is writer of the books The Man Who Folded Himself and The War Against the Chtorr series. He's also written for television, notably the original Land of the Lost and the TV adaptation of Logan's Run. He is most known for the TOS episode The Trouble with Tribbles.

The story of his adoption of his neurodivernt son, The Martian Child, was adapted into a film with John Cusak.

David Gerrold's "When HARLIE Was One" (1972) was a novel about an artificial intelligent computer, and his friendship with his psychologist. It is chiefly remembered as being the origin of the idea of a "computer virus," which the novel predicted a decade before an actual computer virus came into existence.

HARLIE showed up in other David Gerrold novels, notably Star Wolf, where every intergalactic cruiser had a HARLIE installed. A HARLIE (not necessarily the HARLIE) showed up in Gerrold's War Against the Cthorr novels.

I personally find it weird to think of David being anywhere but southern California… but he and his son and daughter-in-law have decided that Vermont will be a better place for them and the grandchildren all to be.
