On a warm summers day, a boy named Davie wanders through his home town. He doesn’t really know where he is going, but he suspects he is on the hunt for the person who left a dead body behind in town. Davie goes in search of the killer, and along the way he encounters some strange and wondrous things! . The death in town brings up raw feelings for Davie, since his father has recently died. We’re not sure of Davie’s exact age but we get the feeling he is somewhere between his disappearing childhood and the daunting adult years ahead. Davie makes some friends on his journey who teach him about death, religion, community and art. They’re a little philosophical and even Davie is a little too knowing; sometimes it is as though he knows the reader is with him. . The Colour of the Sun is a gorgeous coming of age story and I love the way Davie learns about darkness, kindness and above all, hope. I love how the best advice in the book comes from the art teacher… and this is not the first book to do so! I love how they’re often the voice of hope in books. “All we can do is to do our best… create your own beautiful imperfect world.” While we often feel pressure to be one thing, through Davie, the reader learns that it is ok to be many. I love David Almond’s writing, and this was another beautiful (if relatively short) story, focusing on a young boy in WWI England. Almond does a fantastic job showing how the so-called complexities of war look through a child’s eyes, but he also shows how adults can get caught up in war fervor and propaganda without necessarily realizing that they aren’t really thinking about it. I remember reading this book in primary school and it’s one of the things that got me believing in angels. Not just the story, but he author. David almond spoke about how he grew up in a small town as a child and he saw stories in every person he met. He said the town he grew up in added a sense of beauty, adventure and mystery.
