Quand Marion et Tom se rencontre, ils explorent la joie des premiers pas dans une relation. Ils apprennent à se connaître et petit à petit Marion tombe éperdument amoureuse de Tom. À tel point qu’elle est prête à aimer pour deux. Ce dont elle n’était pas prête cependant, c’est de devoir partager Tom. En effet, Tom partage une relation secrète avec Patrick, un homme qui le séduit avec ses voyages, sa beauté et son art. Dès que Marion l’apprend, elle remet ses choix en question et se demande pourquoi ne pouvait-elle pas à elle seule combler les besoins de Tom, mais surtout comment faire pour retrouver le Tom d’avant, le Tom qui n’avait de yeux que pour elle?

Des histoires comme celle de Marion, Tom et Patrick il doit en avoir des milliers, cependant j’en ai rarement vu d’aussi bien écrite. Peut-être que c’est la façon dont Roberts nous décrit tour à tour le point de vue de Marion et celui de Patrick, des histoires bien différentes mais qui, au final, se réduise à un seul point commun; leur amour pour Tom. Peut-être c’est la façon dont l’auteure arrive à faire ressentir aux lecteurs un désir pour Tom, mais dès que j’ai eu ce livre en main, je ne pouvais plus le lâcher. Je le recommande fortement à ceux et celles qui aiment les histoires d’amour complexes, tristes, mais qui se finissent tout de même d’une belle façon.

Adapté au cinéma dans un film prévu en 2022 mettant en scène Harry Styles, David Dawson et Emma Corrin, ce livre, bien que publié en 2012, est redevenu populaire à l’annonce de cette adaptation cinématographique.
