I first remember noticing the work of David Shrobe at Deitch Projects last year in “PUNCH” in SoHo. His use of an antique table top - complete with drawer handle - astonished me. Where did he find that? - - Shrobe continues his pastiche of fabric and found objects in “Picture Makers” at the Thierry Goldberg Gallery. In his best exhibition to date @daveshrobe is showing some Beautiful & Strong works @thierrygoldberg For his second solo exhibition in New York, David Shrobe took inspiration from a lecture given by #FrederickDouglass in Boston’s Tremont Temple in 1861. In the address Douglass wrote: “Poets, prophets, and reformers are all picture-makers — and this ability is the secret of their power and of their achievements. They see what ought to be by the reflection of what is ...” Picture-Makers essentially demonstrate the artist’s ambition to constitute all three persona — poet, prophet, and reformer — in the figure of a temporal and spatial traveler. Adding complexity to this aspiration he has painted several different characters who are incarnations of this hybrid figure. Shrobe seeks to explain his practice by saying, “It’s about how to make an image from a variety of things and different ways of working that speak to the story” This is to say that he means to make a complex image that operates in several registers at the same time. You perceive the different strata of meaning if you give the paintings (and the sometimes hidden figures featured in them) their due attention. Really enjoyed this #DavidShrobe (@daveshrobe) work as well at “PUNCH” curated by @ninachanel at @jeffreydeitchgallery in #LosAngeles. It really jumped out to me almost as a mixed currency. A mixture of class (rich and poor), and a sense of meshed duality with the subject appearing to me as possibly a royal, noble or teacher. Westhafer’s paintings offer intimate glimpses into everyday events, with subjects both vulnerable & playful.  Her graphic style & use of vivid colors help to make these commonplace scenes, taken from the artist’s own experiences, notable – they are exaggerated, but still capture distinctive, human emotions. 1. Patrick Quarm @_quarm “Untitled”, 2019 paint, fabric, metal Quarm’s work deals with cultural fusion. The artist, born & raised in Ghana, currently living in the US, is focused on the idea of a hybrid culture & identity: the creation of something entirely new that happens when histories & experiences are merged. 2. & 3. Jessica Spens (b.1986) @jessmyart “Braids and Barettes”, 2018 & “Weekends at Aunties”, 2018 Spence uses women & girls she knows as subjects for her unconventional portraits. 4. David Shrobe @daveshrobe “Glaciation 1”, 2019 mixed media on canvas 32” x 26” Shrobe merges painting, drawing, collage, sculpture & found objects to create complex assemblages that challenge conventions of classical portraiture. 5. Marcela Florido (b.1988) @m.florido “Untitled”, 2018 oil on canvas Florido uses her work to confront traditions in painting & investigate where they come from & what histories they communicate. She employs figuration to challenge artistic traditions of her native Brazil, where figuration in art is not widely accepted; women’s bodies, in particular, are often seen as taboo, especially for a #femaleartist to portray. 6. Isaac Mann (b.1986) @isaac.mann “Untitled”, 2019 oil on canvas 64” x 103” Mann crafts a chaotic, mysterious narrative with his paintings. Characters & forms will recur between works; his figures are abstracted, composed of simplified shapes & intertwined with each other, imbuing the compositions with even more ambiguity. 7.
