The @dior 2020 Cruise collection 'Dior Common Ground' at the 16th century terracotta fortress, Palais El Badi, in Marrakech was a celebration of craftsmanship featuring a host of talents fr the #African continent & beyond: creative director @mariagraziachiuri tapped collaborators including Pathé’O, whose blue shirt featured a portrait of #nelsonmandela in the back; Moroccan women’s collective @sumano.co, which created a henna-dyed wool coat; African wax maker @uniwaxciv & U.S. artist @mickalenethomas. #MickaleneThomas, who created a handbag for the #DiorLadyArt project last year, applied a lush patchwork of fabric & glass beads onto the sleeves & back of a black velvet Bar jacket & paired it w a Lurex skirt — both inspired by her paintings, collages & photographic portraits celebrating #AfricanAmerican women. “Thinking about wearable art & the body as sculpture & [being] interested in replicating some of the elements fr my paintings into a fashionable, practical & wearable garment, was really fun & exciting,” she said. “I feel like my vocabulary w fabric is very elementary at the moment, but I’m really excited to learn more about fabrics,” she said, hinting that another project w #Dior is currently in the works. “When you speak about craftsmanship, you see craftsmanship traveling around the world,” #MariaGraziaChiuri noted, adding that it was the same thing w the murrine glass beads, harking fr Italy & used across much of #Africa, which were interspersed w raffia motifs on sheer embroidered dresses. “You give a different interpretation of the same thing. Sometimes we don’t know where they come from,” said Chiuri, saying this meant that knee-jerk allegations of cultural appropriation were not always clear-cut. “In this moment where we speak a lot about cultural appropriation, gender, post-colonialism, the environment — as a fashion house it is important to reflect about these issues and think about how we can start a different conversation with our audience,” she said.
