Stray final-episodes Syril/Heert thought: Heert leading the ISB troops to capture Kleya in the apartment block mirrors Syril leading the corpo troops to capture Cassian, especially with both being anxious deskriders who are good at investigative work but are not used to real action; who rely on the troops' squad leader to actually take charge on the ground; who seem to have their targets pinned down before getting disastrously outmanoeuvred; and both debacles spell doom (figuratively or literally) for both them and their superiors

Absolutely! I think that whole sequence in the finale was meant to parallel Syril's Ferrix operation.

It's interesting as well because Syril's fuck up leads to the downfall of Pre-Mor and Heert's fuck up is basically a death blow to the ISB's reputation.

Starkiller Base ups the ante just great, i just think it was introduced poorly- much like the New Republic, which we only see in the scene it's destroyed (Alderaan at least had a personal connection to Leia and is the object of a scene where she bargains for its existence). I'll forever be mad they left out those Leia scenes from TFA.....

Okay I totally agree with that. there was no political aspect in the ST; we didn’t even find out until the new EU or whatever that the Hosnian system was the base of the New Republic, and that its destruction left the galaxy under the rule of the First Order. 

Bloodline is a great book but if you have to rely on supplemental materials to explain plot devices in the movies, you’re doing it wrong.

akira also isn't like.... a wish fulfillment power fantasy in disguise like so much cyberpunk is. The "cyber" part is less technological advancement and more just tech being GAUDY (like the souped-up motorcycles and giant advertisements) or else hoarded by the corrupt gov't for their own use. The psychic powers is the closest it gets to a power fantasy (which is IS for Testuo) turns horrifyingly DISempowering

i can forgive rotj's "Death Star...TWO" bc in the very first scene it's established that they're rushing to make another one, but it's not finished (and the fact that its superlaser works is a Twist)- Starkiller Base just shows up halfway through with NO buildup, just 'I guess they... have this'

how were they supposed to create another superweapon that hadn’t already been done before, though? a third death star would have been laughable. starkiller base ups the ante. 

i mean idk why i’m defending the st when it ended The Way It Did but i guess i just don’t really get the critique of starkiller base like the death star 2 wasn’t also a hilarious plot device.
