Writing Rhetoric: Paradox of Tolerance

Paradox of Tolerance: A society that is tolerant without limit will eventually fail or be ruined by the intolerant.

 The idea of the paradox of tolerance was started by the philosopher Karl Popper, but never received the term we used today until Michael Walzer wrote On Toleration

When Popper first created this term the intolerant of his time were the Nazis. To this day nazism is the still the most infamous embodiment of  the intolerant. 

What the paradox means is if a society that strives to be tolerant of others (accepting to differing demographics, safe for all walks of people, etc.), it will need to be intolerant to the intolerant (bigots, genocidal maniacs, etc.). Otherwise the intolerant will threaten too the tolerance of the society.

It is a difficult concept to grasp, but we see it often in modern times and have seen it throughout history too. Since Popper popularized the concept of the paradox, nazis are most used as an example of what this would look like. 

Even in finding this famous infographic about the paradox I also found propaganda. A steady reminder to do careful research, and keep a keen eye.

 Karl Popper doesn’t suggest we should censor or silence them. Instead he advocates to fight them back with reasonable arguments (or physically fight them if they are nazis) which brings us to RHETORIC and Modern Day Bigotry

Rhetoric

Now I bet you’re wondering what this has to do with writing rhetoric. Well rhetoric itself is complicated to explain, but it also includes the arguments and persuasion in writing. Often times when decoding the rhetoric of others unfortunate deep rooted bigotry may form, sometimes even subconsciously. I know I say things I don’t always mean that come from my subconsciousness towards my environment. 

The paradox of tolerance is in itself a rhetoric argument against bigotry. Of course bigotry is illogical, and most you’d ever find yourself debating in such topics simply will not listen to logic. However it is still nice, especially for writing, to have the paradox of tolerance on your side.

Modern Day

Today we see the need for the knowledge on the paradox of tolerance as bigotry levels waiver all across the world. Whether it be TERFs, Racists, Extremists, Anti-Semitics, and more; there is a lot of intolerance right now. It is best to know when setting up a server, forming an online friend group, creating a club, or maybe even running a society; to maintain tolerance we must be intolerant to the intolerant. Otherwise...they may crush us.

The United States Congress created Endangered Species Day in 2006 with the adoption of Senate Resolution 431. The resolution encouraged "the people of the United States to become educated about, and aware of, threats to species, success stories in species recovery, and the opportunity to promote species conservation worldwide." It also encouraged schools to spend at least 30 minutes teaching students about the day; encouraged groups such as businesses, organizations, private landowners and agencies to collaborate on educational information for the schools; and encouraged people of the United States "to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities." In short, the day is for learning why it's important to protect endangered species, for learning how to take part in protection efforts, and for celebrating species that have recovered as a result of these efforts.

Each year, events are held on the day and throughout the month in places such as zoos, parks, aquariums, museums, wildlife refuges, schools, and botanical gardens. There are often speakers, tours, exhibits, and children's activities. Every year, there is also a National Endangered Species Day Youth Art Contest, where students in grades K-12 learn about endangered or threatened wildlife and support conservation with their art.

Conservation efforts have helped with the recovery of many species, such as the gray wolf, gray whale, grizzly bear, whooping crane, Kirtland's warbler, and peregrine falcon. Some animals, such as the gray wolf, bald eagle, and American alligator have recovered in large part because of the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973. In general, species are saved by the combination of research, coordination, intensive management of conservation efforts, increased public awareness, and education. Human awareness is important because many of the main drivers of extinction of species are caused by humans. Some of the leading causes of extinction are overhunting, overfishing, global warming, pollution, habitat fragmentation, and invasive species.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species does the most comprehensive worldwide accounting of threatened species, by listing plants, animals, fungi, and algae. Species can be listed between "near threatened" and "extinct," with "endangered" being in the middle. Over 27,000 plants and animals are listed as threatened with extinction, appearing somewhere on the scale. In the United States, the Endangered Species Act determines how threatened species are classified, and species are usually assessed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. About 700 animal species and 900 plant species are threatened or endangered in the country. Because of the many threats that species face, it is fitting there is an Endangered Species Day.

How to Observe Endangered Species Day

Today should be centered around learning about threats to species, becoming educated on how you can help to protect species and then working to help them, and celebrating species that have been recovered. There are many ways these things can be done, as well as other ways the day can be celebrated!

Learn about endangered species at the websites of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Learn about some of the issues that species face that cause them to become endangered, such as overhunting, overfishing, global warming, pollution, habitat fragmentation, and invasive species.

Find an event to attend. Many often take place at zoos, parks, aquariums, museums, wildlife refuges, schools, and botanical gardens. Check in your community or online for events.

Host an event. Use the online toolkit to help you with your planning.

Donate to groups that support conservation efforts, such as the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the World Wildlife Fund, the Defenders of Wildlife, and the National Wildlife Federation.

Learn about some endangered species that have recovered.

If you are a teacher, implement information about endangered species into your lessons today. If you are a young person, participate in the National Endangered Species Day Youth Art Contest (the deadline to enter precedes the day). If you are a college student, read some online suggestions on how to celebrate the day.

Watch an environmental film, a documentary about endangered animals, or a film about endangered species from the Video Project.

@mtn-grl-on-the-prairie I have literally never sold anything online in my life and honestly I don’t think I would sell a treadmill, even if I never stepped a foot on it lol i would have no idea how to do that. I think it’s more I know I’d use it but I’m afraid eventually it would just sit there like our stationary bike does and I’m more worried about spending a lot and it being a waste. I have a lot of trouble with big purchases. I think about them for days/weeks/months going over very pro and con. Ideally my mother in law would decide she doesn’t want hers or wants a new one and would give me hers 😂😂 @adventuresasmrsfindley ha I definitely would not be spending that much. I think we would use it, it’s just such a big purchase for my tiny house and financially I can’t spend $600 right now. I’ve found some cheaper brands but again, I have trouble making big purchases. Mentally I just get overwhelmed. But yes I have bought lots of small things and not used them 😂 @kimberleyhealthyandhappy the idea of a strength workout is my nightmare 😂 but yes yoga and running do compliment very nicely. I wouldn’t even use it for running really, like training- just walking/running to burn calories. It would be nice to have the option without thinking “welp, gotta go outside, gotta decide to drive to the park” which is an ordeal in its self and can wait until Gavins asleep or even before he wakes up. I’ve barely been doing yoga because my studio is on a slim schedule for summer and the other studios are 20-30 minutes away. Plus I’ve been dead all summer. Hoping the end of summer I can get back to going 4x a week. @jens-daytoday RIGHT. I think that is what is selling Dan on it. He says if I buy one, he’s allowed to finally put a tv in the sunroom (where it would go). I feel like even the shows I watch weekly I’d be like time to walk, even just a hour walk while watching this is us would be soooo beneficial. @daisykoop I thought about the elliptical but they really aren’t for me. I definitely prefer a treadmill. If we got rid our of stationary bike (which is old and broken) and cleaned out our sunroom we could squeeZe the treadmill in. I am leaning towards a YES but I forgot we have to go pick up my rings and Dan’s watch tomorrow and that is going to be a lot of money (he had to reset all the diamonds 🤦🏻‍♀️ and get it engraved again) plus our peco bill was high this month thanks to my teacher husband home all day running the AC like it’s nothing 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ so I may have to wait another week or two. I get an extra paycheck this month though so just gotta make sure the other bills go through! Plus I don’t feel comfortable buying online. I want to go LOOK at it and make sure I’m getting the most bang for my buck. I found a brand on Walmart and sears that is less than $300 with good reviews but again, I’d like to look at it.So tomorrow I might try to talk dan into going to sears near the jeweler. If I see one and I really want it and the price is right I could always just transfer money. Plus my birthday is coming up and my mom said she’d just give me cash and I could put that towards it! Campaign Idea #2 - Part 1

Digital Dependency 

For this campaign idea, i want to lean towards raising awareness towards the excessive and over use of technology in our daytoday lives, i.e cell phones and screen devices. The targeted outcome for this campaign would be to encourage people, more specifically the younger generation to take a step back from their phones, laptops and any smart device and spend time mentally present in the world. I feel like this is a hugely important issue as a lot of the Gen Z generation have grown up with devices.

Although technology is rapidly enhancing and will be our inevitable future, that is, if not more reason to step back and take in the physical, living breathing world around you. Instead of using cell phone and smart devices, this campaigns aim is to encourage people to stop outside, go for a walk, see friends and family, read a book, use your hands and get creative, interact with nature and appreciate and admire the beauty and mystery of the never ending, ancient world around us.
