Common Strategies and Tricks (pt.2)

It’s been a little over a month since I discussed this topic initially, and there are so many tricks in CS:GO alone, that I definitely won’t get close to covering all of them in this post. Without further ado, I’ll start with shooting tricks.

As you can see in the picture, yes, I’m shooting a wall. However, noting the material of the wall, which is wood, you may consider that a thin piece of wood (especially in areas with construction, like the one I’m at) won’t do that well at stopping bullets in their tracks. Because of this, damage can be done through walls, especially if you shoot enough at someone through it.

This technique, called “wall-banging,” is really only useful with walls like this, although it can be done with other walls. How effective it will be, however, depends not only on the wall itself, but also the weapon being used. As well as armor penetration, each weapon has a stat for how well it does penetrating different surfaces, with snipers usually doing the best.

Because of this, usually weapons with high damage to start, high fire rates, or high penetration power will do well in wall bangs, and sometimes only snipers will be able to wall bang a specific spot.

For example, in this spot on “banana” in de_inferno, only snipers will be able to shoot through this thick stone wall. In this photo, you can see that the counter-terrorist doesn’t have a sniper. Because of this, his M4 won’t do any damage if he tries shooting at the terrorist. If he did have an AWP, for example, he may even be able to one-shot the terrorist through the wall, if he hits a headshot. 

Next up, a topic I vaguely mentioned in my post on aim and movement. Side stepping consistently and quickly will allow you to shoot accurately while changing direction, because technically, your velocity is much lower at this time. This means that peeking in and out of an angle, like the one above, very quickly (called “jiggle peeking”) could get you info without risking your life as much. If perfected, shots could be placed at the perfect times to score kills while getting information, but only if you’re not caught out in the open.

If you mess up your timings, you may go too far out and become an easy target, or go too far into cover, possibly missing a sight that could have changed the outcome of the round. Perhaps a terrorist passed by the angle you watched quickly, and you couldn’t catch him because you messed up your peeking?

Also, when you become a target, hit-punch can drastically slow you down. This means that when you get shot, you become much slower, and it becomes much more difficult for you to get back into cover. This may get you killed, or it will leave you injured for the remainder of the round.

This one’s important, and I mean really important. I may have touched on crosshair placement before (a very necessary procedure, which must be perfected to improve), but pre-firing or pre-aiming takes it to another level. As you can see in the situation depicted above, I was waiting in this corner for a terrorist to run by, hoping they wouldn’t check the spot I’m in.

Assuming this is an actual player, they wouldn’t hesitate to kill me, since I still haven’t reacted to them running past. In this case, the terrorist pre-aimed successfully, which means that he’s already aiming where he’s expecting me to be. Lucky for me, however, he didn’t pre-fire. 

This would mean that instead of peeking the corner and already aiming at where I COULD be, he shoots regardless, giving me even less time to react. Even if someone pre-aims correctly, they still need to have reactions fast enough to pull the trigger if I’m there. However, with pre-firing, reaction times are taken out of the equation because the player plans to shoot anyways.

The downside, however, is that while pre-aiming is simply changing where you’re looking, pre-firing makes a lot of noise, especially when doing it to many angles. If the terrorist did this at every corner on his way to me, dead over there, my team mates would have a pretty good idea of where he is, since he’s been making noise the entire time. In the picture above, you can see that it’s pretty hard to miss seeing what just happened, and chances are it’s pretty hard to miss hearing it, too.

A rather risky, but also profitable technique is jump-shooting. In many cases, this is left to just jump-scouting, which is seen above.

Like running and shooting, jump-shots are much more inaccurate than standing still. However, there are a some ways to get around this. Much in the same way that switching directions on the ground makes you accurate (called counter-strafing), being at the apex of your jump (the very top, changing directions) also makes you more accurate. However, there is still some inaccuracy from being in the air, but this changes between weapons. Most notably, was for the SSG08, commonly called the scout.

This light sniper, in the photo above, is able to shoot perfectly accurately if you were experienced enough with it to be able to shoot at the exact apex of your jump. This would obviously catch even experienced players off guard, especially if they’re expecting a peek around a corner at head-height. 

Not to mention, that before around 2 years ago, this technique was much easier to pull off. Instead of having to time your shots perfectly at the apex of your jump, you could just shoot near the apex, and if you were close enough, your shot would be accurate. It should be noted, however, that for jump-scouting you’d obviously want to be scoped in, as this will make you accurate in the first place, and it can help you figure out when to shoot, because the scope becomes less blurry the more accurate your shot is.

A common strategy across many first person shooters is the concept of head-glitching, which is really just a normal way of using cover. This is usually thought to be unrealistic, and to an extent it is. 

Basically, head-glitching is just using cover so that only your head (and possibly shoulders) are visible to your enemies. Because your line of sight is dependent on your characters head, bullets will seem to come out of your eyes. Because of this, a player can shoot you even if their gun isn’t visible to you. In the photo above, the counter-terrorist is standing on the edge of the bottom blue container, and I can barely even see his head if I’m just glancing over him.

What this means, however, is that your armor is made much less effective, unless you’ve bought a helmet. For example, if on a pistol round (when helmets cannot be bought), you bought armor and head-glitched somewhere, you’re only allowing your head to be shot, meaning that if you die, you would’ve been better off buying something else. Regardless, this shouldn’t be something to deter you from buying armor, as it will almost always help you anyway.

While all of these strategies involve aiming, shooting, and stopping those things from happening to you, there are many more tricks in CS:GO that don’t just have to do with these things. For example, there is so much more to movement mechanics and economy that I haven’t covered here, so expect those to be discussed in another post.
