Everyone has recced this, and for good reason, it's stunning. Cas gets back from the empty and Dean sort of lets him down gently and is very worried about breaking his heart. Despite this Cas is finally able to express to Dean how much he loves him and takes full advantage of this. He's earnest and sweet and so intense about it, but also incredibly hurt about the lack of reciprocation, though he tries to hide it. He does get the love he deserves in the end and it's so good!

Really agonising and harrowing at the start as they both feel so rejected and miserable. Cas gets into situations where monsters use his feelings for Dean to attack him. Eventually, they're able to tentatively work out their feelings and settle down together and it's very sweet.

Dean and Cas retire together. Cas becomes a beekeeper and Dean starts to use the honey he makes to bake goods, which they sell at the farmer's market. Cas is very much in love with Dean but it takes Dean a bit longer to work things out.

Other Canon-era

A Winter's Tale by NorthernSparrow 64k rating T

This one hurts a lot, so fair warning for that. Cas falls ill while human and homeless and is hospitalised. Dean finds the journal Cas kept as he struggled to survive in this time. Pre-Destiel but Cas does write a lot about his feelings for Dean. Sam and Dean shower Cas with love and kindess as he recovers. Also a destiel epilogue that is very sweet and fluffy.

In the Shadow of your Wings by Enochian Things (Salr323) 57k rating E

Cas confesses his love to Dean post s11 finale but the timing is terrible and Dean is very repressed about it all and breaks Cas's heart. Cas gets an Italian man of letters boyfriend in an attempt to get over it and Dean is insanely jealous (which Cas is oblivious to) but they all have to work together to try to save Sam from the BMOL. Dean eventually gets his shit together and treats Cas the way Cas has learnt to understand he deserves.

They worked in silence for some time, but at one point Dean got distracted by Castiel's long, nimble fingers handling the blade with confidence that looked as natural as breathing. Well, natural to humans anyway. Those fingers, those hands put him back together, both figuratively and literally, more times than he could count, and now there they were, casually cutting potatoes... “Dean?” The angel sounded concerned. “You've been staring at nothing for at least a minute now.” “It was not nothing,” Dean assured him, and he dropped the knife onto the counter, grabbing Castiel's tie instead. “It's you,” he supplied as he pulled the angel closer, making him stumble, and mashed their mouths together. It was uncoordinated, frenzied, but it was also honest and that made up for the lack of technique. After they parted, Dean rested his forehead against Castiel's. “Why now?” The angel asked quietly, taking a small step back. Something flashed on Dean's face too quickly for Cas to recognize, but the hunter's fingers tightened on the tie he'd been holding onto as if it was a lifeline, and Castiel realized that whatever it was, Dean had just fought it and won. “You said we were real. I want to believe it.” “Even if it ends in pain?”  “Cas, everything I do ends there, eventually. There is always a bigger, heavier, smellier shoe waiting to drop. "Deana!". Tears were streaming down my (S/c) cheeks as I watch helplessly as blood seeps from Deana's chest. "No". I was choking on my own tears and sobs watching the scene before me. My sadness turns to pure rage as the demon smirks at me, my leg was broken but I stood up I was losing to much blood from the wound on my neck but I held it together sharing the glare with the demon in front of me. "Well well well look who is trying to be big girl". I clench my fists and punch the bastard, he just laughs and pushes me back, I almost fall but grip the table behind me. "Still trying to be tough, the tears on you're face say its a act darling". "Oh really I've seen lots of tough people cry". I feel around behind me trying to find a weapon, the only thing that was on the table was gas and matches, won't stop a demon but will help for now. I slide the matches to behind me and grab the bottle filled with gas. I throw the bottle at the demon and it shatters, I grab a match and try to light it but it doesn't. "Sh*t". I back away and the demon growls I try another match this one lights but soon was knocked out of my hand. My eyes drift to Deana as the demon grabs me by my shirt and lifts me up against the wall. I look back the matches in my left hand, I bite my lip and let the demons arm go and strike another match it lights and I throw it in the demons face, he drops me and backs away as fire engulfed his body. I run over to Deana's limp body and take her knife, the demon turns and looks at me, his skin was burned to a crisp, I wanted to puke just looking at his ugly face that was now ten times more ugly. He comes at me and I stab him right in the chest. "Fu*king stupid demons". --- I sigh as I wake up the same beeping sound filling my ears that same noise from weeks ago when I first took Deana to the hospital. "Hey sleepy head". My eyes snap open and fly to Deana who was smirking at me fully awake. "Deana!". I tackle her in a hug clinging to her like she was going to fade away, but a couple weeks ago I thought she was really going to. "You're finally awake". My voice was nothing but a whisper since my breath was taken by happiness. "Takes a lot to put out this fire". I giggle. "What?". "...Nothing I'll tell you later". I crawl onto the bed not letting her go. "What's funny?". "Nothing lets just cuddle". "*Snorts* fine". I kiss her cheek and she blushes. "Love you Deana". "Yeah you to". She crosses her arms and looks away blushing deeper making me smile.
