This year marked the 30-year anniversary of Brent Mydland’s death. I did a big memorial tribute to him on my IG account so I thought I would do something a little different for this project. Here are Brent’s first and last performances as well as one of his finer moments during his tenure with the Dead – the very first time he led the band through the “Hey Jude” coda. As I noted in my tribute to John Lennon the other day, Beatles covers were rare for the Grateful Dead – at least before Vince joined the band – so this “Hey Jude” bust-out was a surprise of epic proportions at the time. The re-entry back into “Dear Mr. Fantasy” renders chills. But, the biggest chills come from the last verse he ever sang with the band….

I gotta go but my friend can stick around

I included the performance of “Truckin’” that follows as a bonus track so that I can say Happy Hanukkah to all of my friends who are celebrating the Festival of Lights tonight.
