Death Eaters: Real Or Just Fictional?

If you’ve watched all the Harry Potter movies, you might probably be familiar with Death Eaters

Death Eaters, as seen in the movies, are collectively known to be passionate followers of Voldemort (aka You Know Who or He Who Must Not Be Named and they consist of wizards and witches who were radical pureblood supremacists practicing Dark Arts. These followers are described to often wearing black hoods and masks with snake-like slits to cover their faces and sporting a Dark Mark burned on their left forearm, which they use to summon Voldemort. (Source: “Death Eaters” from Harry Potter Wiki Fandom; https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Death_Eaters) Aside from the black robes and masks, Death Eaters are also seen to be wearing tall , pointed hats which are approximately half the length of the wearer’s height. They are often spies who keep their loyalty to Voldemort as a secret as many of them are involved in British wizarding politics and various bureaucratic organizations. Some or few of the notable Death Eaters are namely: Bellatrix Lestrange, Barty Crouch Jr, Peter Pettigrew, Corban Yaxley, Alecto and Amycus Carrow… and a few more to name such as Lucius Malfoy and his son Draco (in the 6th movie).

Are there also Death Eaters in real life? Or are they just mere ficitional characters?

Now, as to whether there are really Death Eaters in non magical world or in real life, Death Eaters can be based on any number of racists, bigoted or supremacy groups. In terms of history, Voldemort and his supporters can be likened to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis where a few similarities include oppression of those whom they believe don’t fit to their ideals (Voldemort = oppression of Muggle borns/Muggles as Hitler: oppression of Jews, gypsies, disabled people, etc), the lists and registration of Jewish people compared to lists and registration of Muggle borns/Muggles. Death Eaters (Harry Potter)

“Death Eaters are characters featured in the Harry Potter series of novels and films. They are a terrorist group of wizards and witches, led by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who seek to purify the wizarding community by eliminating wizards and witches born to non-magical parents. They attempt to create a new order within the Ministry of Magic by spreading fear through the wizarding community and murdering those who speak out against them. Their primary opposition is the Order of the Phoenix.

Death Eaters recognise one another by the Dark Mark, a sigil branded on each of their left forearms that allows Voldemort to summon any of them instantly. Their typical attire includes black hooded robes and masks. The Death Eaters as a group first appeared in the novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, although individual members of the group, such as Severus Snape, Lucius Malfoy, and Peter Pettigrew had appeared in earlier books in the series. The group had also been mentioned indirectly in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, when followers of Voldemort was mentioned. They were mentioned the first time directly in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

“The Dark Mark is the symbol of Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. It refers both to a magically induced brand that every Death Eater bears on his or her inner left forearm, and to the same symbol summoned in the sky by the spell Morsmordre. “

“Lord Voldemort placed the Dark Mark brand on his followers' inner left forearms both as a sign of their loyalty to him and as a method of summoning them to him when he desired. This was done by pressing his finger to any Death Eater's Mark, which turns it jet black and delivers a burning sensation to any person with the Dark Mark. I find these tattoos quite interesting because similarly to how the tattoos in my story will grant people powers these for example have the ability to allow all the people that own these tattoos to communicate through them which is another interesting take on a similar concept to mine.

Quando falamos sobre Harry Potter: quais são seus tipos de personagens favoritos?

Gostam dos estudantes, aurores, professores ou se identifica mais com os seguidores de Lord Voldemort?

Não me encaixo nesse último caso, mas conheço muitas pessoas que adoram esse lado negro da magia.

Pensando nisso: você sabe como dizer “comensais da morte” em inglês?

A resposta é: death eaters.

A tradução literal dessa expressão seria algo como “comedores da morte”. Acho que a versão que a tradutora da versão brasileira, Lia Wyler, criou, muito melhor, não é?

A palavra “eater” que traduzi acima como “comedor”, não é algo tão comum assim: nem em português, nem em inglês. Em português soa bem estranho, não é verdade?

Contudo, quando falamos, por exemplo “I’m a big eater”: isso quer dizer que “Sou um verdadeiro comilão”.

Em outro contexto ainda, quando vemos em algum filme de terror, por exemplo algum “man-eater”, isso significa que alguém come pessoas, é um canibal.
