“Are you sure?” She knew Deckard was not one for double checking things so seriously. He was a spirit caught in the winds of the wide open world - he soared through cities and circles of people with a grace and disarming smile that, more often than not caused her to become very close to getting whiplash through the strength of her eye rolling. And yet now, He was sat at the thick oaken table - the taverns usual crowd and sounds seeming to drain as he was composed, Unusually defensive. His lax shoulders tightened, his back straightened and the welcoming hearth warmth of his eyes sheen over into something piercing. His stare caused her to turn away, half looking at him and half trying to focus on the room...trying to avoid what was naturally coming next.
“Well. Yes....and no. Perhaps...A-anyway who are you to offer advice about this??!”
Navien realised perhaps a fraction of a second too late that she had slapped her hand flat on the table top and spat her words out. There was a look of hurt - for however brief a moment on her brothers face, causing hers to entirely soften and to turn fully facing him, hand offered out to his. “Im sorry I...”
“Below the belt alittle there, darling.” There might have been a slight truth to her words; yes Deckard really wasnt the type to give any sort of advice. His advice usually ended up with her in a barfight and him talking them out of a burning building. However, the dryness of his grin betrayed the slight hurt to his pride, and the barely visible wrinkles betrayed his age in this light. Something that made Navien’s brows to furrow and an almost look of worry to form. “Now now, you wipe that look off your face. Thats supposed to be my look right now.” His voice broke with a gentle chuckle through his words as he reached for her hand and clenched it tightly, wiggling it ever so much. A vague smile returned to her face and a sigh that sounded like it had been bottled in her chest all day.
“I know, i know...i just thought it was something...important. And i should share with my big brother. Face to wrinkled face.” The smirk that carried her words broke into a short burst of laughter as Deckard recoiled in fake-horror, releasing her hand to drape it across the bare part of his chest and mock a gasp of wounding.
“First you tell me you love my Boss and now you insult my perfect skin?! Where is my sister?!” She waved her hand at him and leaned over quickly to swat at him - his actor skills breaking into a hearty laugh as he was, for lack of better description, swatted by this angry wasp of a hand. “Ow-ow-Ow! Ok! Im Sorry i spoke so loudly about how you want to Kiss Gio-” With each word from Deckards mouth, Navien’s face grew darker with blush and then he pushed his luck. Throwing herself over the table to grab the walking dead mans beard, her drink was thrown over his lap as was his own - there was a breif pause in conversation around the room, but it quickly resumed when all realised who it was.
“I Will not feel bad for killing you a roast cockerel! I did not tell you so you could Blab!” Deckard was hissing at the stings of pain as she pulled his head in close, his own hands swatting at hers. “Nottheface, Nottheface-!”
“Ill do more than shave your beard off you asshole! Promise you wont tell him!”
“A-a-a-a-aarright! Alright I might not tell him when drunk-”
“Deckard Radovits Blaine I swear to Callistra’s swarm i WILL-!”
“Alright Alright! Good god woman, this was supposed to be about me telling you to  change your taste in men.” She had let go by now, only to be glaring daggers at him a few inches from his face and still practically lay atop the table. Her brow quirked and her features shifted from anger to a disbelieving shock.
“You? Telling me my taste in men is...off? You slept with - and dated a stray mongrel ‘comedian’ who put our family matters to shame.”
“Oh well now you're being far too harsh. At least Gidieon...actively shows that he cares. You are pursuing a man whose face i have only ever seen twice, and whose number one priority is himself. At all times.” He sighed, leaning back away from his sisters face and visibly seeing her hope deflate. And it left Deckard with a knot forming in his chest, rubbing his temple he huffed and patted for her to sit beside him.
“Look. i want...you, entirely. To be happy. To be loved and safe and i want you to find someone who will not be afraid to show you that. You cant deny we are romantics at heart...but.” Another pause as Navien had shifted and did, in fact sit beside her brother, amber eyes seemingly absorbing all the light they could to gleam. Deckard deflated and hooked an arm around her shoulder. “ Just know. That if this - he. If hes something you...want. So to speak...It will most likely be distant and you will ache and you need to know...that it isnt going to be what you want it too. Please by all means, like him, if you want to chase him, do so...but just be careful with that heart of yours. Its been bruised and battered enough.”
Her defeated sigh was heartbreaking but...Deckard was sure he was doing the right thing - he had to feel like he’d given her the right tools to...do this. Navien threw her heart into everything and it always broke her in the end, she doubted herself far more than she would ever show or say aloud. And the fact tht she hadnt snapped back at him yet made him squeeze her side on to try and muster something from her. “Enlighten me.”
There was a huff and a confused blink as she looked at his smiling face, brow risen suspiciously.
“What?”
“Enlighten me. Why do you like him?”
“You’ll laugh.”
“I might, but i laugh at most things so it wont be special.” She huffed and punched him weakly, a small scoff from the both of them. She leaned, arms folded, on the table and gave him another suspicious look. “ I wont interrupt, you just, convince me.”
“Well, i mean...you know him better than i but.. atleast...What i find...attractive?about him is just how fascinatingly clever he is. for someone so composed and coiled so tightly hes full of surprises on the battlefield and he doesnt mind helping me learn. But he doesnt...’teach’ me, he makes its feel like im an equal, he makes me feel interesting - i mean, i know i am but, he makes me want to be better, he makes me want to succeed and to continue learning- ” Each few sentences she glanced Deckards way before back to staring idly in front of her, finding the words was...difficult. And Deckard hadnt laughed yet. So this was all a bonus. “ -and how...i feel safe around him and also always on edge just incase. I love his voice too. Thats nice.”
There was an almost uncomfortably long pause after she spoke that made her fidget and sit back up, looking to Deckard with pursed lips and a small frown. His entire body language had changed, over the course of hearing her talk, it wasnt just this random moment of infatuation. She loved him and there was a welling of both happiness and a truly terrible sting of pain in his chest.
“He makes me excited for the future.”
“You’re really in deep, huh?”
“...How could you tell?” Another scoff as he motioned for more drinks. The fact that he was still soggy hadnt yet been brought to attention, but he was keeping that as bribery. Deckard hugged Navien with a squeeze and returned to looking over the tavern, still busting with life.
“I mean, I have a...strong liking for him too, but you seem more his type-” Before he could bring the fresh drink to his lips, the familiar sound of Naviens hand slapping the table made him pause and look her way, a filthy grin on his face and the look of outright rage on her own.
“Wait what?! You gave me all that crap and YOU like him too?!”
“ Im your big brother its my job too.”
“ I hate you...you asshole.”
“ Love you too... Drink up and imagine his ass. Its a delight.”
“ I dont care how right you are you’re still an asshole.”

Not just Indy or Han. Harrison Ford turns 78 today. A few of his non-franchise roles.
Rick Deckard in Blade Runner. D: Ridley Scott (1982). Scott turned Los Angeles into Utopia’s dystopia and Philip K. Dick’s meditation on the inner life of androids into a straight up sci-fi private eye noir, with Ford as its Bogart, halfway from the greed of Fred C. Dobbs, and too far away from Rick Blaine’s nobility. And after he witnesses Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty simultaneously find and lose his soul, he becomes a moral Ishmael, humanity’s last witness.
Detective John Book in Witness. D: Peter Weir (1985). An action movie set in Amish country seems like the setup to a joke but Weir makes it work as a culture-clash love story. When Ford’s two-fisted police detective protects an eight-year-old Amish witness to a murder and then hides out with them in their community (and falls in love with the boy’s mother), pacifist ideals clash with 80s action-movie morals.  Spoiler alert: Action movies win.
Jack Trainer in Working Girl. D: Mike Nichols (1988). In Romantic comedies men usually play the role women do in Action movies, tangential accessories to the hero(ine)’s story. In this Oscar-nominated romcom Ford was caught between Melanie Griffith as a secretary posing as her amoral boss, and Sigourney Weaver as the boss. Still the film brought out a lightness and charm in him that he never regained as he got older and grumpier. It opened up a road I wish he’d gone down a few more times.
