since we're apparently among the only three people here who don't dislike Zaya...1. why do you think people have more trouble forgiving Zaya for their flaws when basically EVERY Degrassi ship is messy, flawed and complicated?! (Not judging anyone - we all like what we like, and things resonate with us for different reasons, I just find it interesting that people think Zaya is too toxic to forgive while some other Degrassi couples are objective just as messy and even more so) 2. Three Zaya scenes you love that show you they're meant to be? 3. Any songs you associate with Zaya? 4. Name three things Maya and Zig have in common and three differences they have that balance each other out! 5. Want to start a Zaya Appreciation Society with me? We can all share ice cream ;)

There are actually a solid amount of devoted Zaya fans. They're just harder to find. There's a reason I stick with Tumblr. Other places intimidate me and aren't worth the drama.

1.) Personal preference? Other than that, the existence of Campbell Saunders. Just as Zaya's potential romance was picking up steam and forming the foundation for their eventual relationship, Cam killed himself. Zig was the last person to speak to Cam. Regardless of Zig's intent or that during all of their interactions, Cam was the aggressor and the one who initiated all of their conflicts, the only thing the majority of Degrassi fans remember is that Zig pushed Cam over the edge. It never sat right with many viewers that Zig wasn't held more accountable for Cam's death or that Maya was so blasé about Zig's "confession". The writers' intent was clearly to send the message that no one is responsible for a suicide or anyone else's actions. But at the same time, you should still be mindful of others because you never know what's going on in someone else's head. Plus, I don't think Zig's character took quite the trajectory that some fans were expecting. He was supposed to have "learned" from Cam's death, meaning there was an expectation that he'd come away from the experience wiser with an acute awareness of how to navigate situations like this. It turns out, that never really happened. Zig tried his best and meant well, but he continued to be careless with words and was often in over his head. Zig also went on to feud with Maya's next boyfriend, Miles, where he was much more combative and kind of a shit starter. Miles was written with more care than Zig and quickly became the preferred character out of the two starting with season 14 and Next Class. So retroactively, Zig = bad, Miles = good. And lastly, a lot of people can't overlook cheating, even in fiction. While I take the stance that while I hate it, fictional cheating happening in teen dramas is highly likely, others felt too betrayed to continue supporting their relationship. Just overall, different people come away with different interpretations of characters and couples. In my opinion, Miles was far and away Maya's worst love interest and could have never made her happy in the long run even if they were both in heathier mindsets. Comparatively, I think Zig complemented Maya very well, offered constant emotional support and more often than not communicated well with her. Maya never seemed to be as happy with any guy as she was him once they were finally together. Others will tell you Miles was a great boyfriend, most of the things I just listed, and that Zig was a mediocre love interest.

2.) That's super tough to narrow down. I feel like I'm doing this wrong, but..

(1) Zig comforting Maya after Miles screams at her, reassuring her that he knows that she means well

It's the softness for me. It's how after the confusion with the season 13 love triangle and Zig being resistant to Maya's help, he gets it. He's here when she needs him the most. It's funny how for some, Maya and Zig getting together in the second half of season 14 came totally out of nowhere. But even though I didn't expect it when the season was airing, looking back it's very easy to see what was developing and how they were getting closer and closer each episode. Even though the Maya/Miles relationship lingered and Zig could have potentially gotten together with Zoe, those romances didn't pan out. To me, this is when their season 14 arc officially begins.

(2) Zig and Maya making up backstage

Yes, they were fighting and Maya was frustrated with Zig for trying to handle the gang on his own rather than turning Vince in, but he realized on his own (with the help of Damon) what needed to happen. We didn't see the full scene, but Zig clearly apologizes for their earlier conflict and for not initially going to the police. Maya is so forgiving and so prepared to forget the whole thing happened. Like she said. "You're here. We're together." That's literally all that mattered to her. No matter what happened, she was going to stick with Zig. No one can convince me that Maya Matlin wasn't equally and 100% as in love with Zig as he was her.

(3) Zig trying to cheer Maya up

Post bus crash, Maya was in the darkest place she'd ever been in. She was slowly losing all of her personal connections. At this point, it would be difficult to say Zig and Maya were even friends anymore. Their relationship ended in a very painful way with Maya still angry with Zig even months later. They both almost died. Zig entered a very public relationship with Esme. While they had occasional moments where they interacted that reinforced their connection, (in 302 when Zig asked Maya for advice about Esme), overall Zig wasn't part of Maya's life and therefore missed a lot of her warning signs. But, he did notice her on the verge of breaking down in the hallway and instantly knew something was wrong even if he couldn't have imagined the extent of it. So, Zig basically gently forces Maya to open up to him about what's going on. He knows she's struggling with something and isn't happy anymore, so he decides to cheer her up. This is Maya's first genuine smile the entire season. Every other time, she's either faking it or indulging in darker interests that only serve to trigger her more. And Maya clearly feels all the feelings in that moment. Yes, it's easier with Zig and he reminds her of happier times, but it's also very obvious how much she's still in love with him. This isn't technically part of the scene, but in the next episode Maya makes it a point to ask Esme to take care of Zig for her. The only other person we see Maya explicitly request be taken care of after she's gone is her mother. So, it says a lot about the depth of Maya's love for Zig and how much it would mean to her for him to be taken care of after she's gone. Anyways. Zig makes Maya happy and instinctively understands her.

4.) Ugh, I'm the worst at song questions.

Oh My Love - Layla (played when Maya kisses Zig in season 14, kickstarting their relationship)

5.) Three things Zig and Maya have in common.. they're both loyal, protective people and never afraid to fight for what's right, particularly when it affects someone they care about. I'll count that as two. It's honestly tough to find similarities, as weird as that sounds. They just match each other's energy and tend to be on the same wavelength. I'll say they're both pretty laidback. In spite of the fact they find themselves pulled into drama (especially poor Maya), they typically don't go out of their way to create it. Sometimes certain rivals will bring out that side of them, but overall they're chill people.

As for the differences that balance each other out.. Zig is the more sensitive one. He has a way of being quietly supportive and intuiting things while Maya internalizes a lot of her emotions. She's so desperate for nothing to go wrong that she almost avoids reality. I honestly think Zig grounds her a bit and forces her to be honest with herself. While both have good hearts, Maya is more compassionate and quicker to forgive. Even though it would sometimes be easier to lash out and the people wronging her would 1000% deserve it, Maya avoids conflict for the most part. Zig has never met a physical conflict he didn't want to throw against his locker. He means well, but he struggles with his anger from time to time and can't help but want to defend. Sometimes he's defending himself, other times he's defending the people he cares about. Maya provides a calming influence and encourages Zig to find better, healthier ways to handle his problems. This is so hard LOL. I feel like that's it? Who Maya is and who Zig is and how they interact with each other makes them an unusually good match. This is awful. I apologize.

degrassi next class finales ranked in terms of how good they were season 1: honestly if hunter actually tried to kill someone the gun would probably fall out of his lame ass hands and end up killing him instead (7/10)

season 2: this one was pretty forgettable besides the bus crash from nowhere like the resolutions kinda felt rushed and overall nothing from this episode had any lasting repercussions besides giving maya another busload of trauma (unless you're one of the 3 people who care about tristan) (3.5/10) that bus should have crashed harder

season 3: maybe im just biased bc im a diehard maya stan/defender/apologist but like this season was probably the best season of next class and the finale was also the best one yet mainly because it gives more insight into esme's character and the scene with maya literally felt so real and kinda hard to watch for a show that literally started with a quote from drake (9/10) would have been 10/10 if tristan died at the end season 4: you can just tell the writers thought they were getting 2 more seasons after this and it's just painful to watch (6/10) class of 2019 deserved better

• ellie is my favourite character and why did they change her look in the later seasons, she looked so good in season 3

• i hate ashley’s character but her look in S2 was amazing

• season 2 is my favourite

• next class is really bad

• spinner was a bad friend, to jimmy especially, and a bad person overall. what he and jimmy did to miss quand was horrible

• spinner and emma shouldn’t have got married and she should’ve ended up with sean

• sean and emma, liberty and jt, paige and alex, manny and jay, imogen and fiona were all my favourite ships. i love them all </3

• adam’s death was one of the most unnecessary

• terri didnt deserve all she got

• why are they always high on ecstasy, i really dont get why?

Degrassi -

favorite male character: Jay, Tristan, Eli, Miles, Marco, Zig, Jimmy, Drew, Tiny, Connor, Dallas... So many (mostly) good boys

favorite female character: Manny, Alli, Alex, Bianca, Clare for the drama lol, Maya, Fiona, Imogen, Zoe, Jenna, Holly J, Jane, Liberty... That's enough lol

least favorite character: So so so many. Dave, KC, Esme, Frankie, Lola, Ellie, KATIE, Dylan. Then like anyone who should be in jail like Peter, Derek, Hunter, Luke (who was in jail yay) and any adult that had a relationship with one of the students

favorite season: Hmm that's a hard one. Probably like 9-13?? The Clare era. But there's honestly something happening all the time like there's hardly a dull moment. Except all of Next Class, no one needs to see that

favorite episode: Again I just binge this show so much that it all runs together and I don't really remember episode titles lol. For some serious episodes, Rick shooting up the school, and then the one dealing with the aftermath of Cam's suicide. For some fun ones, Degrassi Goes Hollywood (mainly the Manny plot) (even tho that also makes me cry), the bottle ep that's an homage to the Breakfast Club, and the Vegas Night ep is ridiculously iconic

favorite romantic ship: JANNY. I knew they got together before they did and I was literally like "nope sorry im never gonna ship this" well. Here we are. Also love Fiona/Imogen, Alli/Dallas, Connor/Jenna, Tristan/Miles, Drew/Bianca, and Eli/Clare, bc they were so dramatic you have to love them

AHHHH You're writing Degrassi fics too?! Yesssssss I recently finished a rewatch of TNG and NC and watched Junior High, High, and School's out for the first time. So I've been very much in Degrassi mode!

Craig Manning is possibly my fav character ever in all of Degrassi! Please tell me more about your fic! <3

Degrassi is probably my most beloved, treasured show of all time. I haven't seen Next Class because I never emotionally adjusted to the jump from MTV to Netflix - I might watch it someday, especially because I heard there's a bus crash? and that sounds interesting

I started watching TNG when I was 11/12, and at the time I was watching reruns of Season 6 because the cable network I was watching it on was playing reruns of all the previous seasons in anticipation of the new one - so I watched S6, S7, S8, S9 - to me, those were 'live' cause I didn't know those were reruns at the time

and I watched S10 when it first came out and I watched all of the other seasons and their summer movies when they first came out (and I was very active in the fandom at the time. some of my most fond memories are being in the fandom during S10, S11, and S12, during the Drew, Bianca, Clare, Eli drama - especially during Claire's pregnancy lmao)

to this day, I still have very fond memories of a blog called 'incorrect Degrassi' where - on the same night an episode aired - they would take screenshots of the entire episode and write a memey version of everyone's conversations with each other. and when Claire told Drew that he wasn't the father of her baby, they captioned him saying 'well what am I supposed to do with that World's Best Dad mug that I bought, huh?' - it lives in my head rent free

it's only in recent years that I have gone back and watched the show from S1, and I have watched some of the 80s series. and because I only watched the later seasons, I knew Craig as a cokehead asshole (who was not cool enough to be friends with Pete Wentz, my fucking idol) who broke Ellie's heart, my dear Ellie. but going back and watching the show from the beginning - I fell in love with Craig

When Doves Cry is one of my favourite arcs, named after one of my favourite songs ever, and it just gets to me. And Craig's songs and his singing voice - it makes me fall more in love with him, and uuugh

Even recently, I was rewatching the episode where Liberty gives birth, and Craig is on stage singing a song with the lyrics:

For every mama gone missin' For every papa gone mad

And I don't know who actually wrote the song, but in universe, it is such a perfect melancholic reflection of his life, and it hurts - but it hurts in such a beautiful way.

Anyway - my fic is about abuse. Which is something I have written about before because of personal experience.

I was in my feels, deep in my feels - because like I said, I had a loss in my family, and I was feeling a weird sense of empathy toward my abuser because we share that loss, and this fic just came to mind.

Idk if I have ever talked about this before, but people have comfort characters, and I also have comfort locations? Like - the urge to write about a certain character in a certain location as comforting. And how that location can exude comfort in a fic.

And in this case, I was really drawn to Craig's garage as a comfort location. The locations in TNG all really exude comfort for me personally, but Craig's garage is a big one - it's cozy, it's worn-in, and it feels welcoming. It feels like you can go there anytime and there's no pressure.

So I wrote a fic where the reader character is fleeing from her abuser and Craig finds her hiding in the garage, and they talk a bit - and I wanted to structure it a bit like an episode of Degrassi? and have this be the first time the reader finds out about Craig's past of abuse. and Craig is like "I'm not gonna pressure you to tell anyone because I know what it's like, but you should tell someone" - but then Craig sees the abuser at a school event, and he snaps. and he starts wailing on the guy, and everyone thinks that it's Craig being irrational and violent because of his BPD

and I was also inspired by Craig's protectiveness over Manny after the flashing video came out, and I just felt comfort in that.

yeah - it's a really personal fic, but I feel like fics like this deserve to be published, because someone else might find comfort in it. and stories like this deserve to be told (I might post a snippet of it and see what people think? idk)

Class Favorites: Shows I Finished. Ranked.

1) Good Trouble Season 4 

This season turned out to be really good. We all wondered whether the show could still hold up on it’s own without certain relationships or individuals personal dramas being what many would consider the center of the show, however it really told us “bet!” I can’t wait for what’s to come next and I hope it continues down the path of exceeding expectations.

2) Riverdale

Riverdale is a show that people keep watching because they’re already invested and know there’s only so many seasons left, so we’re all just sticking it out right now. That being said, season 6 was actually fairly decent and much better than the last season. I feel they really did try this go around and if they keep it up, season 7 (the supposed finale) should be a pretty okay end to the series.

3) You Season 2

I watched like the first half of season one a few years back, but when I stopped using my sisters Netflix, I didn’t pick it back up. Fast forward to 2022, the library gets all 3 seasons on DVD and I decide to dive back in to the show that gives me anxiety. I think season 2 was the best of the three in terms of story and progression and the crossover of Joe’s many lives. It was just a better and over complete watch for me.

4) You Season 3

This season just had so much going on and it was constantly trying to figure out what sketch and blood it could add to the mix, that I wondered if it was ever going to slow down, even for a second. Obviously the show is set up for there to be no peace and it did decide to breath a tad bit at the end of this one, but I know it’s not for long.

5) You Season 1

I think coming back to this season and watching what followed it, I felt it wasn’t as strong in the lineup. It was still good and wild and all the things, it just came up a little short. Still gave me anxiety though, so there’s that.

Misplaced my season 12 DVD so it was on hold while I located it. It’s back in progress and I should be finished with this 6th rewatch in the next month or so.

Started this show is 2021 and maybe picked it back up in 2022, but it’s off the streaming service I was watching it on, so this is on an indefinite hiatus until I can find it again.

Malcom In The Middle

This is a pick up show. I watch it randomly here and there and don’t have an expectation on when I’ll be finished with it and that’s okay.

Favorite and least favorite seasons from a purely Zaya perspective?! DNG and NC included - all Degrassi seasons in which Zig and Maya re present are eligible for this very important honor :)

1.) Season 14 (Obviously. It's Zaya at their purest. It was incredibly satisfying seeing them become a couple after years of back and forth and many almosts)

2.) Next Class season 4 (While season 14 was Zaya at their purest, season 4 was Zaya at their strongest. I genuinely think that all they went through both separately and together allowed and will allow them to have a very solid foundation for their second, permanent relationship. There are so many good moments)

3.) Next Class season 1 (As frustrating as this season is and even though I struggle with Zig's characterization during part of it, overall I just love seeing them as a normal couple. The stakes were so high during season 14, but now they're just allowed to hang out and have relationship challenges. Like I said, I didn't love all of it. But it's another season where I really enjoyed the smaller moments. Plus, #YesMeansYes)

4.) Season 12 (It's the season that cemented Zaya as an OTP for me. I loved watching their friendship develop and obviously, the reversal where Zig was now the one pining instead of Maya. I know Zaya isn't for everyone and that they're a throwaway relationship for a lot of fans, but I can't imagine watching them holding hands by the Panther wall and feeling nothing. It was so sweet and genuine and full of potential)

5.) Season 13 (I hate half of this season and there's way too much love triangle bullshit. But there's also a lot of passion and things that aren't being said. Especially on Maya's end. The writers played with my heart many times during the last two blocks, but everything left Zig and Maya's friendship in a solid place. I love that after everything, they were truly happy to be back together again if only in a "platonic" (ha) way)

6.) Next Class season 3 (Zaya didn't get a lot this season, but what they did get really stood out. The tickling scene alone places this miles ahead of season 2. I'm obsessed with it. The subtext is very clear. Zig and Maya are still in love and kind of on the outskirts of each other's lives, clearly wanting to have some sort of relationship even as friends. But their breakup was so messy. A lot of trust was broken. They don't know where the other stands. It's honestly depressing, but then Maya's suicide attempt changes everything)

7.) Next Class season 2 (It wasn't entirely bad, but I feel like more needed to be done with Zig in the aftermath of losing Maya due to his own actions. It felt very half assed. girl NO there is so much . there is SO much . like theres degrassi street, degrassi junior high, degrassi high, school's out, degrassi: the next generation, AND degrassi: next class . tng itself is like 14 season n most seasons have upwards of twenty episodes, all of which are around 22 minutes n i do NOT have the time for that unfortunately </3 but ive watched the first five seasons of tng as well as three other later, n an entire season of djh . i am slowly but surely makin my way through the series
