Bot Chips Ahoy! PepsiCo Is Test-Driving a Snack Delivery Robot | Fortune

CART’s Take: Pepsi is testing an autonomous delivery robot at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. The robot can deliver a wide range of snacks and beverages like Pepsi and Starbucks Cold Brew Coffee. The robots are being supplied by Robby Technologies out of San Francisco.The robot can run for 20 miles before needing recharging and is equipped with lights and extensive cameras to provide for self-maneuvering. 

We are seeing intense focus across the industry on solving the last mile challenge. Retailers partnering with a range of services for home delivery while Kroger is testing self-driving autonomous delivery vehicles. Robots like Pepsi is testing are appropriate for high density areas like a university or in a city, but are not well suited to more urban areas. Ultimately I believe we’ll see a mix of different solutions being used depending on geography and locale. But keep a close eye on this space as it is moving fast.

Hannaford Tests Technology for More Interactive In-Store Grocery Shopping | Progressive Grocer

CART’s Take: Hannaford is using one of its stores in Portland, Maine as a lab, testing new tech to provide in-store shoppers a more interactive experience. The technologies include digital displays, shelf sensors, kiosks, and more. Hannaford is exploring how tech can be used to enrich the in-store experience, hoping to meld the digital and physical worlds of shopping. 

A growing number of stores are using digital displays and kiosks to engage shoppers in the store. Kroger is bringing its digital shelf EDGE solution to market, deploying it in its own stores and offering it to other retailers through Sunrise Technologies, its Retail as a Service platform. What’s missing in grocery retail thus far is a concentrated effort to bring augmented reality into the store experience. I think the tech is tailor-made to help shoppers learn about products, get preparation ideas, and far more. 

Google Assistant nears 1 billion installs as usage quadruples | Fast Company

CART’s Take: By the end of this month, Google expects around 1 billion devices will be running its Google Assistant, the company’s digital voice assistant and competitor to Amazon’s Alexa. That’s up from around 400 million devices a year ago. This kind of growth certainly speaks to how fast digital voice assistants are becoming ubiquitous. And that’s the goal of Amazon and Google. They want us to be surrounded by this technology 24x7, making it easy to engage our smart homes, our vehicles, and even work in the office through voice. This is something retailers should be watching with their eCommerce solution partners, making sure that integration to these virtual assistants is on the product roadmap.
