Why the May 2025 Deltarune Newsletter Heavily Implies the Existence of a New Weird Route
new newsletter, rejoice! alongside some cool new info regarding release - specifically timezones and consoles - we also got some new information which i strongly believe implies the existence of a chapter three and/or four weird route. let me explain!
so, this begins with toby's reveal of the playstation trophies. unsurprisingly for a meta game element in deltarune, they seem to be written by the GONER_MAKER voice, or probably-gaster.
notably, one of them, the chapter 3 end trophy, has this description:

this trophy is also pretty special, as toby has something to say about it:

i believe these two small details are hints towards the existence of a new or continued weird route.
i know that's absurd to say from just that, so let me explain! from those two bits of information we can extrapolate four criteria for these "certain conditions."
they provide an alternative manner to reaching the end of the chapter
they are, to some degree, secretive or obscured beyond what a casual player would experience
they are not a bug as toby is calling attention to them before release
they are something that probably-gaster would consider an issue
now look. i have really really tried to think of anything that could be being implied here beyond a weird route because it feels so out there, but i simply cannot think of anything that makes any more sense and fits the criteria. therefore, i'm going to call it. chapters 3 and 4 will likely have at least one weird route, whether that be as a continuation of the chapter 2 route or an individual new route.

ive been going back and forth for a bit now on this: on some level i kind of feel like sword route should have had a little more consequence if you did it on an otherwise pacifist run. like i get why it doesnt (it could potentially read as labouring the point about the layers of the fiction if sword route altered things beyond kris' outlook) but also i kind of feel like it should have at least been mutually exclusive with saving tenna... especially with the changes in his bossfight if you do it, i feel like it would still make sense. plus it would potentially make the meaning less opaque to the notorious subset of utdr players who tend to misinterpret all things no mercy related. in general i feel like there should have just been a little more lasting consequence to your choice to do this. obviously we can't fully know yet what the outcomes of the wider secret boss scenario will be (and I'm starting to have serious doubts about how good it will be for us at large). overall though i think with the specific nature of what you have to do to get the mantle, and how it does affect kris' behaviour and the way they approach obstacles, it might have worked a little better if there were more unavoidable consequences to your file.
at the same time though i keep talking myself out of this thought process because i think its kind of important to the feel of sword route that it remains a game within a game with no lasting consequences to those outside of it. the plausible deniability feels important especially as commentary on us the players and the way we inevitably experience stuff like the weird route. but then again we literally did stab tenna to get him out of the way during the game... and there are multiple instances of characters asking kris whether they had fun with the game (increasingly clearly referring to the violence)... plus the increasingly obvious blurring of the lines between the fiction and the fiction-within-fiction... i dont know. i think maybe it would have been interesting for it to affect things more permanently. but also i think it having more permanent concrete effects potentially might have made it less compelling. sorry for basically rambling in your askbox and coming to no useful conclusion on this, but if you or any of your followers have thoughts on this id be very interested to hear them
i think, genuinely, the fact we seemingly "get away with it" is part of what's going on. like, no one knows what Kris was up to, everything goes away when the game is turned off, nothing has been altered... except, of course, that's not true. pixel kris has definitely done Something with ramb. kris has lingering desensitization. but you can still act normal, continue on like normal, etc.
it's connected to weird route in that regard too, honestly - isn't it weirdly low-consequence, through 2 and 3? isn't it the case that your dark world actions are invisible when you've left except for the mental marks left on Noelle and Kris and Berdly (counting being comatose as a mental effect)? can't you still recruit enemies, make friends, see all the major plot beats, and have a good time?
if something is contained and invisible from the outside - if it will have no consequences except on the mind - if you can safely walk away from it back into the normal world...
is that what makes it "okay" to do it?
would it be fine to do a no mercy run in Undertale if at the end Frisk logged out of a MMO they were playing and went back to daily life with no one the wiser?
is the arbiter of morality whatever you can get away with?

Random Deltarune Fan Concept & Character
(This is just me babbling about some random ideas that popped into my head after beating chapters 1-4. )
*I’m still working on beating the secret bosses, looking up the best strategies because I suck at games, it took only 5 tries to beat Spamton but took well over 20 tries to beat Jevil.*
The True Light World
So this first concept is more of a sh*tpost just for funsies, might do something with it or not:
So you know how there’s Dark Fountains, what if there was Light Fountains or Light Falls?
They would function similarly to the Dark Fountains: It’s so dark that your mind creates new beings from shadows & objects. Obviously this would be the opposite: It’s so bright that your mind can’t comprehend the object & creates afterimages of said object.
Unlike Darkners where you can see them in the present, the Light Beings or “True Lightners” can only be seen by their afterimages: So I guess you see their past positions.
Much like Darkners, who said to be ones to help the Lightners, the “True Lightners” help as well but in an “unhealthy” way: While the Darkners can help you process & solutions for your problems, “True Lightners” prefer to live in blissful ignorance & tell you to just forget all the bad in the world or to just ignore your problems. While it’s fine to temporarily take a break from your problems, it’s not a good idea to continuously ignore them as it can lead to more & bigger problems.
The color palettes of those visiting the “True Light” world would be the opposite of what they are in the Dark world:
Kris: Shades of Blue -> Shades of Orange
Susie: Shades of Pink/Purple-> Shades of Green/Yellow
However, Darkners lose their “physical” form & basically become a shadow, but can still communicate normally. So Ralsei would only be a shadow when he’s there, but if he did have a “physical” form: White Fur & Shades of Green -> Black Fur & Shades of Red.
Regarding battles, there wouldn’t be any encounters, at least not by the enemies themselves. You would basically need to cause problems & stress in order to get them to fight you. They would be weaker attack-wise, but the “Attacks” can take up more space & are faster.
I don’t have a story or how this could tie into Deltarune, like I said before, this idea is more of funny “what-if”.
“Comfort” Character
This character is more of a “I want to hug & comfort Kris, even though I’m the one making them do all this stuff, so I’ll create a character that can do it for me”.
The basic concept of this character is that they’re aware of the Player & that they control Kris’s actions, even if they don’t want to do said action. They obviously can’t do much to help Kris’s situation, but will offer comfort or just be someone that Kris can just vent to.
I imagined that whenever this character asks Kris what they want to do & the Player picks an answer, they would respond with “I wasn’t talking to YOU” or “I was asking Kris”.
One scenario that kept popping up was the following:
The Character would ask Kris if it’s alright to join Kris & Susie on whatever they’re doing, the Player would pick either “Yes” or “…”
Regardless of the answer, the Character would look at Kris, seeing they just want to hang out with Susie, before saying something along the lines of “Oops I forgot that I offered to help one of my neighbors with something today, you 2 go on without me. We can catch up later”.
I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been imagining my Neue OC as this character. Mainly because since Toriel & Sans seem to be getting closer, Neue could become Kris’s step-sibling, or at least become a “family friend sibling”.
This idea is more of me just wanting to hug Kris because they need it, but I’m the one causing the problems.
I don’t know if I’ll do anything with this yet, but I just wanted to get these ideas out there before they vanish from my memory like goldfish.

do you think the 'forgiveness' path would involve minimizing magic use? having to do a battle in view of susie and ralsei and being extra careful so that you don't tip them off is what comes to mind but also it WOULD be darkly funny for the blasts to blow up the chap 3 secret boss.
and also literally so fair I spent the better part of the first weekend after it dropped grinding to beat it.
YEAH i think if ur actively trying to make up for the path you've chosen, avoiding noelle's ice spells and magic is the right move. you would have to remove the thorn ring yourself as well rather than a scene i have planned with spamton. on the traditional redroot route, I think no matter how safe you play it, susie will eventually find out. she's lugging around her two freezing cold comatose friends who probably still have ice remnants or frostbite in the dark world. if she even sees you use an ice spell once, the suspicion is set.
