"If you want to find the truth, you must go out into the streets."
Waltpaper
Photograph by Lou Dembrow.
In the mid 90's, Waltpaper established The Little Paper Gallery inside of Limelight to showcase the artwork of nightlife artists and founded the art collective, BLUEPRINT - staging a series of outlaw art installation eventually leading to his arrest during an action in a Soho subway station. When the police interrupted the installation underground, a protest ignited above ground. Waltpaper initiated a spontaneous action by draping his artwork across a police car. While he was arrested the crowd followed suit, 'papering' the police vehicles.

Recently published research in the journal Radiology details how radiologists interact with AI computer aided detection (CAD) programs in clinical settings. The results revealed that providers are up to three times more likely to trust the opinion of humans over AI, even when the algorithm is proven to detect more cancerous lesions than radiologists. The trial compared cancer detection rates among an AI CAD tool (Lunit INSIGHT MMG) and human radiologists tasked with interpreting the mammograms of nearly 55,000 women from April 2021 to June 2022. After reviewing the exams, each reader (human and artificial) forwarded those which they deemed positive for malignancy to a consensus discussion among radiologists, at which time they determined who should and should not be recalled for additional assessment.
The results suggest that providers are less likely to trust AI’s interpretations, despite CAD having higher PPV than human radiologists.  “This isn’t a question of whether AI can detect cancer,” lead author Karen Dembrower, MD, a radiologist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and colleagues note. “It’s about how AI findings are interpreted and acted on by the people making clinical decisions.”  The study abstract is available here.

So I went to the local news sources, since they're the main ones that covered it.
A few things. First, it happened over 2 years ago.
Second, the plan is/was always to reimplement standards, and it looks like the standards as they existed weren't fit for purpose. The intent was to create real-world work samples and examples of utilizing those skills, but the system defaulted to standardized testing, which wasn't the goal.
“We were in the middle of looking at graduation requirements in all sorts of areas, and really focusing on trying to make education more relevant, putting more focus on applied education,” Dembrow said. “So that students not only would have the math skills that allowed them to pass math tests, but could actually use those skills in the real world.” But Dembrow said the execution of Essential Skills didn’t turn out the way he thought it would. Instead of having students apply what they learned through work samples, most districts relied on standardized tests to fulfill the requirement.
Standardized tests were still being given in accordance with all district, state, and relevant federal/collegiate programs.
“District level assessments and state required assessments will continue to be implemented and monitored to ensure our students grow,” district officials shared in the post.
Papers couldn't find any student that had failed this portion of the standardized tests, confirmed by Oregon DoE.
La Grande High School Principal Scott Carpenter said the district had never had a student not graduate because they failed an “Essential Skills” requirement. “If a student didn’t pass the essential skill — or meet the essential skill cut score using the Smarter Balanced assessment [state standardized test], then we would routinely have them engage in classes that would help them do work samples,” Carpenter said
The Oregon Department of Education echoed this, writing in an email to OPB that conversations with districts suggest it’s rare that this requirement is the “sole reason” students don’t graduate. ODE said it only collects data regarding how students meet the Essential Skills requirement, either through test scores or a portfolio of work samples.
though, to be fair, maybe you're upset about the recent development with the Board decided to keep it shelved for several more years.
At least there there's some backing for the "they're doing it for black people" idea, but the main focus is on ESL and disabled students.
It also misses that the standards were relatively new, and they had no noticeable improvement on the quality of education in Oregon. Part of why it turned out that way is because it was mainly adding a new way to read previously-existing standardized testing, and didn't actually create anything new.
Board members underscored that state-mandated standardized tests will still be administered to most Oregon high school students – they just won’t be used to determine whether a student has the skills necessary to graduate. “We haven’t suspended any sort of assessments,” state board member Vicky López Sánchez, a dean at Portland Community College, said during Thursday’s meeting. “The only thing we are suspending is the inappropriate use of how those assessments were being used. I think that really is in the best interest of Oregon students.”
(for those who don't know how educational testing works, standardized tests don't typically factor into your graduation at all. They're a separate thing entirely from your B in English.)
It was a new attempt to gauge educational performance, didn't gauge educational performance, and they're removing the new requirements while they redesign and reconfigure them to be more appropriate instead of leaving something improperly designed and useless in the school apparatus.
The report also notes that it’s possible that the level of skill required to meet Oregon’s since-paused academic mastery standards was “too low to improve college and university outcomes.” It’s also possible, the report said, that student success in college relies more heavily on other factors than writing or math skill levels. Suspending the requirement at least until the class of 2029 gives the state more time to do community outreach about how best to overhaul the grad standards, Farley said, and gives future high school students plenty of time to prepare if this standard does resume.
And for this to be very clear, educational requirements to graduate are still in effect, as is other regular standardized testing. They had a bad policy and rolled it back, and because right-wing idiots can't read more than a headline they're pissed that ineffective, useless governmental education programs aren't sticking around.

Leo: Hello, hello.
Jerry Hi Uncle Leo.
Leo: I just talked to Dr. Denvro's son. He said they almost had to call the police.
Morty: What are you talking about? I'm the one who should have called the police. They stole my wallet.
Leo: You know how hard it was for me to get that appointment for you? You can't just walk in on this guy. He did me a personal favor.
Morty: All right, Leo.
Leo: You walked out without paying.
MORTY: How was I supposed to pay? I didn't have my wallet.
Leo: Well, I hope you sent him a check.
Morty: What for? Leo: What for? This man was nice enough to see you. He did me a personal favor.
Morty: That's the second time you said "personal favor". Why do you keep saying that?
Leo: I said it once.
Morty: Twice! And Dembrow doesn't even know you. His son happens to live on your floor.
