you have always hurt. you hold it carefully, and twisted in such a way that other people don't have to see it. you don't choke on it. you don't drown. you just have it, the way some people have freckles, this is a thing that lives in your bones. you fold instead of fighting because you know how to make yourself small, tuck away the places where they have clawed at, swallow the bruises so you seem clean. nobody needs to see it. you will live through this on your own. you know what you need, and relief isn't it. this doesn't mean you cannot reach out - it means it is not in your nature to do so. you should. hiding does not mean you won't be seen.

She is a lifelong resident of Montana, and was inspired to go into the law enforcement career as her parents did. She had an older sister named Tess, who lived in Hope County at the time Layla was on the fast track to become a detective with a specialty in criminal psychology. Several events ended up causing her to have a nervous breakdown and she quit, moving back in with her parents. She moved to Hope County to support her sister and start new as a junior deputy. She became a Resistance leader against the cult, at first loving the attention being a “hero” brought her, but Layla eventually became disillusioned due to the trauma she faced and nearly lost her mind when the Collapse happened.

 After the apocalypse, she left her bunker with Boomer and wandered until being taken in by Rush’s group. She thought she had left her past behind, starting a new life as captain of Rush Security, but it all came back when she and Rush’s group went out to what was once Hope County and she was forced to confront her ghosts, along with new threats…

Thank you for the ask, hon!💗 Let’s talk about Layla (which I haven’t done in forever)

9. A song they like? (or a band, or a type of music)

She really likes rock and some country, especially classic/older songs. Her favorite bands/singers would be Fleetwood Mac, Shania Twain, Alanis Morrissette and Heart, and if she listens to pop, it’ll be slower ballads or more on the alternative/rocky side (she definitely had an Evanescence and Paramore phase as a teen, and she’ll still jam to them every so often). She’d also listen to stuff that fits with her mood (more somber stuff when she is feeling down, more upbeat when happy, etc.).

15. How are they like when they cook?

Spoiler: she doesn’t cook all that well. She never showed interest in learning it growing up unlike Tess, and she only knows how to make scrambled eggs or sandwiches at most. If she does foray into cooking, she’ll stay away from baking since that requires exact measurements and she’s terrible at measuring. If she follows a recipe well, then she can do something easy like pasta or hamburgers, but this woman sticks to frozen foods or takeout (at least until she moved in with Tess).

24. Do they like cheesy romantic novels/movies/shows?

Cheesy stuff is definitely her guilty pleasure, since she sees them as cheerful escapism fantasies. It grew on her in her older years and she was more likely to scoff at them when she was a teen/college student, but after going through hard times she found comfort in cheesy, heartwarming stories.

28. A secret of theirs?

Post-Collapse and when she eventually joined Rush Security, she kept to herself that she had abandoned her nieces Hazel and Fern in the car and went to a nearby bunker to hide for herself, even though she saw Fern alive and reaching for her. She’s told everyone who asks that her whole family died in the Collapse, hoping she’d believe her own lie, but the past comes back to haunt her when she returns to Hope County and she confronts both Joseph and the Judge.

32. Something they’re really proud of?

She got really good marks in school and anything related to her work, even as something small as beign a Junior Deputy. She thought she blew her chances at having a successful law enforcement career after getting a hostage killed and getting blackballed by her agency (she didn’t make may friends in her old position, which is why she tries a bit harder to get along with HC’s Sheriff Dept.). When she becomes the “Hero of Hope County,” she also finds immense pride in her work, even to her detriment.

1. Layla Rook. 2. Early to mid-30s in FC5. Late 40s to early 50s in ND. 4. Layla is pretty versatile and will just be happy getting her hands on anything. She’s proficient in firearms, and prefers either handguns or rifles. She’s also handy with a bow and likes to use remote explosives as traps. 5. She ends up stealing any working car/bike/ATVs she can get and, after a few pointers from Addie, she takes a shine to assault helicopters. 6. At first, Layla just wanted to get her family and get out, but after seeing the harm to the county and getting praised for her work for the first time in a long time, Layla embraces the role of “Hero of Hope County.” She doesn’t necessarily like killing people, but she eventually becomes numb to it and she only regrets what she’s done after the Collapse. 7. Negative. She’s studied cults and knows how they operate. She pities some of the cultists, but overall has little sympathy as the fighting gets prolonged. 10. She didn’t really know Dutch prior to the failed arrest, except through gossip about his run-ins with law enforcement. She came to trust him after a while and used him as support. She only knew what happened to him after coming back to HC. 11. Neutral, mostly negative due to rumors about her sister getting mixed-up with Jacob. The only Seed she met prior to the Reaping was John. 12. Holland Valley. It would be Whitetail if she wasn’t so scared of Jacob every time she went there. 13. She gets along with all FFH as an animal-lover and the GFH he gets along with best is Grace. 14. She has a romantic/platonic history with Hudson and the two rekindle it somewhat after she gets hired. 15. All of them, except Zip. 16. None really; she likes the brothers who run the F.A.N.G Center and Bo the best. 17. Eli is her strongest relationship; she even begins a short romance until y’know... 18. She had an attraction to him before the Reaping and despite the animosity, she disliked him the least of the siblings. She likes to antagonize and egg him on. 19. At first she saw her as a victim, but she soon wised up to her true nature. They became pretty bad enemies over time, though she still holds a small amount of pity. 20. Her most feared and hated out of all the Seed’s. Even after his death he still haunts her and she blames him for her sister’s demise. 21. Does Burke count? She didn’t know him as well, but ended up feeling awful for him. She also was annoyed by Pratt. 22. Zip tended to grate on her nerves 23. She and Tracy butted heads from time to time, but none really. 24. Tammy was her least favorite, but she grew to respect the older woman after all that happened. 26. She reads him as a typical cult leader at first and scoffs at his beliefs. As time goes on, she becomes more disquieted by him as he proves her wrong about his nature. She is determined to prove him wrong, but by the end is shaken when he is proved right. She does not like to dwell on any of the Seed’s, least of all him. 27. She likes them as hideouts and even relies on one when the Collapse occurs. (28. was a repeat of 26.) 29. Completely broken and even to the point she almost ends it all. She ends up a huge self-loathing mess and becomes gruffer, more cynical and closed-off from others. It takes Rush and the events of ND to heal her again, and even then she is still jaded.

Emotions

😊 Layla likes to think she’s a pleasant and easygoing gal (when she’s not having a depression breakdown or fighting for her life form the Seed’s). Layla is always in a good mood when she does something nature related, such as hiking, kayaking or simply walking in her neighborhood. She also likes spoiling her nieces or hanging around her family when she can find time, and she likes to go bar-hopping after a day at work with friends/date.  Layla tries to keep a positive attitude and her “hero-like” confident leader who is always helping others is one of the reasons she is well-liked in Hope County. 

⭐ Layla has a fear of drowning due to almost drowning while river-rafting when she was younger, has some anxiety about being in confined spaces for too long, and can easily be startled by loud noises (especially gunfire) if she isn’t prepared to hear it.  On a more philosophical level, she is afraid of failure, being abandoned/left alone, her loved ones dying and she is powerless to save them, and forgetting after seeing her grandfather suffer from dementia.  She is able to calm down by listening to music, talking herself down (when she’s in the water, she reminds herself she can swim and not be a dummy about flailing around in the water, for example) or actually talking to someone (even if she is loathe to show vulnerability like that; you have to be very close to her to get her to open up).  Some people are scared of her, mostly in the FCND-verse where she’s become closed-off and unapproachable except two or three people.

🍋 Layla is petty when she sticks to her guns: she is convinced the Seed’s are nuts and wants to not only stop them, but actively prove them wrong about the world ending (oops, look how that turned out). She’s not the jealous type unless it’s something egregious, and she can act petty to tease someone; one will know if Layla is joking-petty or literally mad-petty.  She only begins to feel guilty about her pettiness when someone calls her out, like Tess, or when she gets older and realizes she was wrong on many things. 

📀 Layla isn’t easily shockable or trusting; in fact, she has a hard time getting to know and trust new people due to getting burned in the past. It’s why the Seed’s are frustrated when their manipulative tactics don’t work right away on her because she is that stubborn and mistrusting off the bat.  When it comes to being trusted, on the other hand, Layla is a reliable person who only tells lies or manipulates only when the going gets tough, and she begins to feel bad. She loses most of this trait in FCND, but it comes back every now and then.

💛 Layla has a pretty good grip on her emotions...until the end of FC5, but that’s another story. She can lose it if someone she cares about is hurt or has hurt her badly, but she tries to show she doesn’t care, which backfires (Layla is an open book when she’s upset, but good luck getting her to admit it). Layla is this way because she craves to control herself and show she is the best that HC/Rush Security can depend on; she wants to show she can be the hero and she can’t be the perfect hero for the people if she lets pesky negative emotions get in her way, right? She only mellows out and opens up more after the tragedies in her life finally snap her and she reaches an epiphany about how this not only hurts her, but others around her.

Jacob: What are you telling her? I do not get flashbacks; I remember bad things vividly.

I’ll stick to Layla for most of them, but I’ll add Iris and Tess in parentheses if I feel the question can relate to them. Thank you for the ask <3

3. Layla likes comfort and utility above all else. She sticks to flannel shirts, loose tee-shirts, snug jeans and sweatpants. (Tess is the same way. Iris likes sun dresses, anything that can make her feel “pure” and “innocent”)

8. The minute she walked in and saw the interior of the church, she thought: “Well, at least we got further inside than the FBI did with Waco. Shit, I need a drink after this...”

9. Layla likes the preppers and finds them smart, if a bit loony to believe in the “world-ending prophecy.” (Tess tended to ignore them and only paid attention when things were going bad in the county. Iris finds them to be smart to prepare but fools not to join Joseph)

25. For Layla, any combination of the animal companions. She also mostly called on Grace for her sharpshooting skills/company and Nick for his strafing.

30. Layla ended with her getting out of the car when it crashed and hiding in a bunker with Boomer. She then left, roamed the post-apocalyptic wastes for a while surviving/hating herself, and then joined Rush Security, becoming Captain of Security; she then came back to HC and the events of ND played out.

(Tess killed herself after Jacob’s death, having been thoroughly broken by the events of the game.  Her daughters Hazel and Fern wound up in the bunker with Joseph, in which Hazel became the Judge and Fern was killed by Highwaymen after leaving the bunker and joining Prosperity.  Tess’s son with Jacob, Todd, was taken in by the Whitetails, raised by them and leads a small militia to fight the Highwaymen near their old base.  Iris got to a bunker and led EG survivors to New Eden alongside Joseph.)

💍 for the ask game, any oc

💍  Layla tends to be a hoarder of items, but one of her most priceless items is a stuffed sheep named Baa-Baa from her childhood. It’s old and raggedy and she had to fix it a few times, but it gave her a lot of comfort as a child and she associates it with comfort and peace now. She left Baa-Baa behind at her parent’s house in Helena when she moved to Hope County because she wanted to start anew (she did ask them to keep it, on threat of throwing a Layla Tantrum if they tossed it. They kept their promise). She was reunited with it after the bombs dropped and she left HC to wander and she ends up burying it along with her parents’ remains (oof, that got dark fast).

🍓Ironically, Todd was raised by the surviving Whitetails, ironically, where they took shelter in the Wolf’s Den when the bombs dropped. They did not raise him with the knowledge of his father’s identity and sparingly offered information about his mother, preferring to put his aunt Layla and Eli Palmer on a pedestal. He views Wheaty as an older brother and Tammy as a mother...and was devastated when the truth about his legacy was revealed to him.

🍓 Layla is astounded by the changes in Hope County once she returns with Rush’s group. She especially loves how nature has transformed, captivated by the bright floral colors and the fauna’s fur markings. Everything looks so bright and colorful compared to the burning wasteland she left behind all those years ago.

-When Layla figured out Tess wasn’t a prisoner of Jacob and the cult, and in fact was in love with Jacob and had a child with him, Layla cooped herself in the Wolf’s Den and ignored everyone, including her nieces. It was only Eli and Tammy that brought her back, and she and Eli began a romance…two days before Layla is forced to kill Eli in her final trial.

-When it comes to Tess’ views on Jacob’s family, it’s not the greatest impression. She was initially wary of Joseph prior to the Reaping, seeing him as a false prophet and blasphemous (as a devout Christian, albeit unconventional in her own practices/faith, she saw the statue alone as a heresy), though she keeps on his good side. She and John are very passive-aggressive and snide; the two find it hard to get along, though Tess can see John being similar to Layla: younger siblings who are overprotective over their older siblings’ partners. She gets along best with Faith, but rarely sees her, and knows Jacob’s lukewarm feelings to her. Family dinners are awkward, to say the least.

-Iris loves pretty much all animals, except dogs. Her father owned a dog he trained to scare her (and whom he loved and cared for more than his own daughter), and later she had several run-ins with stray/wild dogs while homeless that left her frightened. It’s why she stays away from Jacob’s region, clams up if dogs are nearby, and poisoned Layla’s dog Clover with no remorse (and also to be a dick to Layla, she loves doing that). Her all-time favorite animals are rabbits, deer, and hawks.
