But also, I have a question. I’m going to begin writing a Johnlock story that is set around a roller derby team. I have decided, much like Sherlock going undercover, to immerse myself in derby and have joined a team.

Anyway, I need derby names for all the ladies. Any suggestions? Be as creative as you can be!

Derby names "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other would smell as sweet." Who has them? Why do they have them? What do they mean? So many questions, so many answers. When we decided to start Roller Derby I wasn't aware of the focus placed on each players name, then as I started to get into it and learn more about the sport and the history I learnt that the names become part of the chase, part of the prize. So,"who has them?" Well everyone has one, some tough sounding others softer, but all of them have a connection to their owner even if only that the name sounds cool. The reason 'why they have them' is perhaps a throw back to when Roller Derby was more theatrical and sports entertainment that a full contact sport, this legacy has continued and now they are worn as a badge of honour, a part of your armour. Lastly 'what do they mean', this is perhaps the most important of all. Well they mean something different to each player, some are chosen and some are given, my newly adopted name "Wrecking Paul" is obviously a play on my name and a popular Miley Cyrus song. I didn't come up with it, but I seem to remember one of my skate coaches calling it out at me while we were practicing pacelines and whilst I was trying not to knock all the other freshmeat out like a wrecking ball..... (Unintentionally I might add). I love the names, they are fun and part of the process, they tell a story. They are a rebirth if you like, an evolution of us. Bipedal animal to bipedal badass gliding through on 8 wheels. For some they are a persona of confidence and an empowering choice. In a world where we have lots of choice but everyone seems to be a clone of the next person, the Derby Name is your own. I choo-choo-choose you

Choosing a derby name is harder than you think. Well for me it was anyways. I have never been creative at coming up with names. Even my XBL gamertag (AirMe) is a semi-random name that was generated for me when I first started online gaming. Derby names are amazing in general. Especially the really good ones. I really admired some of the ref names I had seen and wanted something clever. The Umpire Strikes Back, Harry Spot’er, Collin D’shotz, Loren Order were all amazing derby ref names,  I didn’t know what my name was going to be but I knew I wanted to have the word “Ref” stick out in my name so that limited my options.

I consulted with people. I consulted with the one who got me hooked on this crack known as roller derby. I consulted with coworkers. I consulted with family. I reached out to my gaming circle at www.lemediocrity.com. I even asked my 15 year old nephew for suggestions. He generally is clutch in this regard...coming up with cool names for just about anything.  He failed me on this one. His only input was that he hated every name I came up with but couldn’t come up with anything better himself.   

The first name that I came up with that kind of stuck was Reforrelli.  This is a combination of the word ref and part of my last name. It also sounded like it could be something out of the sitcom “Happy Days.” Most liked it. My nephew did not. As I started to fill out my paperwork, I was in my office that I had at school for being a graduate student and I had an epiphany as to what my name would be!  I have an undergraduate degree in Geography. My research is based upon geography. I work in the geography field. The answer had been staring me in the face the whole time! There were literally angels singing “Ode to Joy” in the background as the clouds parted and divine sunlight shone down up me sitting at this in a room that had no windows and no view of the outside world.

GeogREFer was born.

I feel like I need to come up with a roller derby name for myself, but I’m really struggling. Is it difficult for other people too?
