i finished rereading the first four vorkosigan books (+ "the flowers of vashnoi" because ekaterin!!!), and you really have to feel for piotr vorkosigan because what a nightmare life, truly.

imagine you are born just in time for your world to be unified by dorca vorbarra and rediscovered by people from wider galaxy. things are finally looking good, for the first time in 600 years of isolation there is no more feudal infighting, and the promise of galactic medicine and technologies being available lightens everyone's perspectives. sure, your grandpa is called count pierre "le sanguinaire", but who doesn't have terrible relatives?

then you are 15, and suddenly your planet is attacked by the aggressive eugenecist space empire hell-bent on subjugating your people and turning them into disposable material for unethical genetic experiments. you flee into the mountains, away from your family, and create guerrilla forces from locals sworn to your dad, and it's really terrible for a very long time. you have no high-tech weapons and no food, you sleep in a cave in the dead of winter, and the cetagandans try everything (from carpet bombing to chemical weapons) to murder you.

but hey, at least you now have your bff ezar vorbarra, and (from the bff's words on his deathbed) it sounds like you two had so much fun between unimaginable horrors and despair, and it's not surprising, since no one really believes in death after life at 20. then the emperor makes you a general at the tender age of 22. fortunately for him, you & bff make a frighteningly competent dream-team, and the joke's on cetagandans.

then, several years later, you ask the emperor for weapons, because you still sleep on the bare cave floor, there are little resources, and every ghem on the planet is trying to murder you. he offers you the hand of his granddaughter instead, like it's some sort of twisted fairytale, but you grow to love your olivia more than anything, and the tide of war is finally turning, and you allow yourself to entertain the idea of peaceful life, and then...

the space eugenecist empire nukes your hometown, killing your mom, dad, surviving brothers, and two hundred thousand of your people. plus your bff (ezar) gets a radiation doze large enough for it to cause severe cancer thirty years later. great.

but you win! your district is in shambles, your capital is an irradiated crater, your castle is in ruins, but you win! the old dorca dies, and yuri ascends the throne, but politicking is secondary to the fact that you are alive.

yes, you are probably not entirely sane, and you've long forgotten what the peaceful times look like, but you are alive, just under 35, and your entire life is ahead of you. olivia is alive too, and ezar, and you now have three wonderful children, and the extended vorpatril-vorbarra family that hosts regular get-togethers. sure, your mom-in-law is a betan with all sorts of crazy ideas in her head, but she is not pierre vorrutyer. small mercies.

but then the new emperor goes mad, and decides to murder your entire family overnight. your brothers-in-law are gone, one of your sisters-in-law too, and all your nephews and nieces except little padma. but all of this pales in comparison to the facts that olivia is murdered, and that your heir and daughter lay dead beside her.

all you have left of her, of your house, of the family you've lost in vashnoi not a ten years ago, is aral, whom you keep by your side throughout the bloody civil war to put your bff on the throne.

but you win again. you are 43, and ezar vorbarra is now the emperor. you are responsible for the imperium's entire ground forces. you are also responsible for a severely traumatized boy of 13, and the only children you've interacted with without olivia's genle guidance were little messengers of guerilla companies.

Just thinking today about how Shauna projects a mean-girl you're nothing without me energy on Jackie, despite the fact that we've never seen Jackie really act that way. Like, even when she was being harsh toward Shauna, she's stumbling over it. She's quoting Beaches. It's awkward, like it doesn't come naturally. But in Shauna's memories, dreams, hallucinations, Jackie is so vicious and cold.

Just thinking about how Shauna behaves toward Melissa in particular. How she is absolutely living the mean-girl you're nothing without me energy. How it does come naturally, almost like she can't contain it, like this is all she knows how to be.

Just thinking about how Shauna's projection onto Jackie isn't Jackie at all. Not only is it the manifestation of her own guilt re: Jackie's death--it is the manifestation of her own guilt re: her own treatment of Melissa. The Jackie who smiles coldly and tells her I'm the most interesting thing about you isn't Jackie. Isn't even Melissa.

Ohhh this gives me SO MANY ideas thank you for this! A different kind of epistolary and it fits my current longfic so well

I have a strong desire for a new Dragon Age cookbook, but it's just a collection of the recipes from the Veilguard and their allies across Thedas.

Most of it is in Lucanis' neat handwriting or in messy, scattered one from Bellara as they note down recipes from their friends and allies;

It's their project together, they pass the empty notebook back and forth as they try to learn requested dishes, but they also just leave the given pieces of parchment written by others.

All the recipes have a little story or background, and maybe like bad illustrations of what it's meant to look like.

Neve had Hal scribble down his secrets to fried fish, but there is a note by her that it never tastes like when he does it anyway - close second though.

Taash adds a qunari recipe from Shathann but also one they enjoy from Rivain. Maybe goes on a bit too long about what foods make one attractive or repulsive to a dragon.

Harding has a page full of absolutely chaotic snacks (ham and jam slam, smashed and fried potatoes with raisins and gooseberries, carrots with whipped cream, while not that wild I do believe she'd love ants on a log) but she'd also give some good cheese pairings.

She would give them a few nice hearty recipes from her ma, who gushes about what an amazing girl Harding is for so long before she gets to the recipe (food blog vibes). I think they would be like a few different types of pie (sweet and savoury) a full roast and maybe some mix of Fareldan and Dwarven.

Lucanis will asd more than a few antivan recipes. His notes get progressively more precise on what NOT to do (Mierda, please! Do NOT break the pasta! NEVER pour out all the pasta water!!!)

All four desserts from Lucanis would be there. Gooseberry pie written by Bellara since she took the recipe from Neve and Nevarran Chocolate Torte in Emmrich's handwriting.

There are precise and detailed instructions on how to make coffee that Lucanis left out for Neve. A note clearly added later is one in capitals on top - 'Please just ask me to make it when you want some.'

Davrin gives a Dalish recipe but also a Warden 'Everything stew'. Says it's bland at best, but still provides comfort and tastes like home. His tea for Rook makes it too, maybe a recipe for a treat for Assan with notes back and forth between him and Taash.

Antoinne sent a recipe for Orlesian Onion soup. Evka adds a dwarven roasted cave roots recipe.

Teia sends a recipe for Arepas and Viago provides notes on how to hide poison or recognise it. He forgot to actually get to the recipe for the soup the servants at house De Riva make frequently.

Tarquin sends a letter for a spiced tea and writes about how it gets him through his annoying job.

Vargoth sends a recipe for dried candied orange peels. He doesn't eat but likes the smell.

Myrna sends a tea served to calm the dead - whatever that means (nobody tried that one).

Johanna shouted instructions on how to make mulled wine at Bellara and required someone to bring it to Emmrich's office. The recipe has many crossed out notes and added notes as Johanna kept insisting it's not right.

There is a few blank pages to fill in your Rook's recipe.

Varric's favourite Cinnamon buns still make it in.

There could be additions big or small from Viper, Elek, Strife, Irelin, Illario???, Jacobus, Heir, all of the faction merchants, Inquisitor and others from Inquisition through Harding... any further ideas are welcome and desired!

I just think it would be delightful.

Lucanis Dellamorte had a perfectly sufficient life as an Antivan Crow - until he was infused with a demon. (It's complicated.) Now, his inner monologue comes with a side of self-doubt and Spite, and his latest contract is near-impossible: taking out two ancient elven gods.

Rook Laidir has her own battles to fight, leading a team in the wake of catastrophe. Amid the chaos, she’s not-quite-hiding a growing crush on Lucanis - a man who’s thorny, haunted, and just charming enough to make it worse. (Okay, a lot worse.)

Then there’s Emmrich Volkarin, the gentlemanly, composed necromancer somehow still putting up with them. When they’re not saving Thedas, Emmrich wonders if anyone’s noticed *he’s* been waiting for the two of them...adoring, steady, and maybe a little too patient.

An exploration of found family, love, and how good advice, good food, determination, and patient affection (slowly) lead to discovering love and a new way to live. It's tricky, and sometimes painful, but they are learning.

I DON'T KNOW MAN I just deeply enjoy junhun and the things that are bigger than them. They exist in a story where there's so much going on and one or both of them might be dead by the end of it but the idea of them still forming some kind of connection?? So Good.

Some unrelated junhun nonsense: I've slowly been building myself a playlist for them. Won't list all the songs on there but some personal favorites include two (sleeping at last), never love an anchor (crane wives), hunting high and low (a-ha), and a pearl (mitski). I don't think you guys realize how insecure Rowdy is bc of Shimmer lmfao. She's literally better than him at everything except rock knowledge and emoting. And boy does Rowdy fucking emote. He loves his sister but he's also incredibly jealous of her. He also thinks that Shimmer hates him (she doesn't) He knows she loves him, but he doesn't think she likes being around him. He gets overwhelmed one day and asks why she hates him and she confusedly says she doesn't hate him, which they talk it out and that at least clears that up for them.
