Here’s a closed starter for Devin Sattler | @wcirdo Early Morning at Devin's residence

Who does this? Who just uproots their life, takes a road trip across the country to reconnect with someone they met once 10 years ago. Of course her connection to Devin is more significant than that, but the answer to the questions remains the same; someone with a spirit-crushing secret— Nova Harris. Initially, she thought that coming here and revealing the truth in person would be easier, but judging by the proverbial knot in the pit of her stomach at the thought, perhaps a handwritten statement might have been the better option. Pushing away the thoughts of something she wasn’t planning to confront anytime soon, Nova refocused her energies on driving. 

Nova pulled her car up along the curb in front of the destination. The house was a welcoming looking structure, similar to the others that lined the streets of this neighbourhood. Hopefully, this time she followed the directions properly. This is the second house she’s parking in front of for the morning. Thankfully, the elder man she disturbed minutes ago knew where to direct her after she had gotten turned around. 

Nova had made good time with the journey, in fact, she arrived one day earlier than what she initially told Devin over their last communication. Nova took it upon herself to send Devin postcards and or letters at every stop she made. Once in a while she opted for calls, but that was more the preference of her family, so they could monitor her trek for a piece of mind. 

It’s now or never! Girl, go! Nova takes a calming deep breath before exiting the vehicle. Deciding to leave her luggage behind for the moment, she slid the keys into her crossbody bag then draped it across her torso. Anxiety had her body buzzing; she shook her hands as if that would remedy the situation. Nova makes her way up the short walk, then onto the veranda, finally coming to stand at the front door. Pressing the button for the doorbell, she waits as its pleasant chimes ring out. That’s when Nova realises she didn’t even take a moment to primp, so she quickly gives her curls a quick little fluff.

i'd like to post funny lines for the entertainment value, but i'll go with earnestness instead.... so they also warrant an explanation of why they're my favorites.

canon luz says "i'm not so kind" in the show's finale, in a remarkably similar situation to AU luz here -- convinced she is The Actual Devil and that she's an evil parasite doomed to hurt everyone she loves.

AU amity has just gone through a many-thousands-of-words-long arc that started with her being afraid luz was Actually Literally Going To Kill Her, PLUS being afraid luz was abusing hunter behind closed doors. so her response here is her acknowledging not just that she was wrong, but also that luz has gone Out Of Her Way to show kindness to the two people she'd be most within her rights to torture/kill/etc for funsies.

devin and nova's relationship is soulmates-as-horror and i have always been open about that. BUT. you know that post that's like, "a wholesome relationship has to be 10% fucked up and a fucked-up relationship has to be 10% wholesome"?

there IS a level of care and tenderness and comfort to their marriage. it wouldn't be interesting if there wasn't. you can see the gaps in the choices that have been made, the way the relationship has been built. these are two people who Could have something really good, if they'd either been in different circumstances or made different choices.

and also it's crucial to nova's characterization that she's nice and likes to perform kindness. some real questions raised about what real kindness actually is, etc.

Warning for like. The general vibes of Kitkat’s fantasy world, Devin being suicidal as always, implications of past grooming, and mid sex that is “sure this might as well happen” consensual rather than enthusiastically so. In the beginning of the book as far as I know the triad isn’t together yet so I’m operating on things around that area since I know less about what’s going on plot-wise and politically later on when they do get together or when that happens!

When they’re done, Nova’s smile is overtly self-satisfied as she puts herself back to rights. The entire time, the faked glow of her, the flawless skin, the too-blue-to-be-true of her eyes — she’d kept it up. Even though Devin knows better. They weren't sure Nova had ever even considered having sex with anyone without her glamours in full force. Devin isn’t sure she's realized it’s a possibility. So much for vulnerability.

Devin had kept her shirt and jacket on, though, barely opened her pants, only allowed Nova to undress her as much as was strictly necessary, so — it isn’t as if she was rushing to expose any unvarnished truths, either.

"Now, isn't that better?" Nova asks, finger combing through her hair. “You’re so picky, you know? No one else ever complains. Don’t you know how lucky you are?”

Devin grunts, zipping her coat back up to the throat. She wouldn't say better. She doesn't feel any more nauseous than she usually does after time with Nova. It's not worse.

That’s why she lets it happen. Why, when Nova reaches for her, Devin sometimes, not always, just — allows it. There’s not much of a difference. She has to see Nova anyway. She can’t escape her. As much as she avoids it, puts it off, she knows she eventually has to come back. She always has to come back. There’s no way out of this life or the leash around their necks. Why not let Nova touch her? She’ll do it anyway, just somewhere else.

“Isn’t that better?” Nova repeats, her smile dropping.

Devin sighs.

“I’m not telling you you’re better than Sol,” they say.

“Why not?” Nova demands, immediately petulant.

Devin and Sol don’t even do this, not that Nova believes her when she says that. It’s not what they are. Not yet. Sometimes Devin thinks — but they don’t.

But Devin doesn’t feel like this after being around Sol. Hollow and faintly sick, worn out from the harsh unnatural light and overwrought glitz, all of it as fake as the honey-platinum evenness of Nova’s hair, no flyaways or strays, always tousled in a way that only professionals can achieve. Feeling like a storm is building behind her eyes to block out the sun.

Just — drained.

She hasn’t had sex with Sol. But she thinks she wouldn’t feel so much like this afterwards.

She’s not sure Nova realizes how fake her own moans sound, even when they aren’t. The way she’s conditioned herself to be conscious of how she looks and sounds and moves, to maximize pleasure for an audience that isn’t there when it’s just her and Devin.

“Devin!” Nova yells after her, in a voice that would probably shock the counselors that have spent decades calling her sweet, demure, lovely.

By the next morning, Felix, Nova and Willa already feel better, but still sick. Especially Willa, who's still struggling with her breathing.

Except for Alastor's who's fever is still stubbornly high. It went down to 39°C, a small change but a step in the right direction. He also isn't as out of it as before.

Lucifer: "Hey, good morning. How are you?"

Alastor, hoarse: "Dreadful"

Lucifer: "I can imagine, you've got a high fever Hun..."

The demon sits up in alarm, or tries to, but the strength in his arms is close to none.

Alastor: "Is anything wrong with the triplets?"

Lucifer: "You probably don't remember, Dr. Chaim was here. They're fine. But you need to really rest up, okay? You were delirious half of the night"

Calmed by this he nods, sinking further into the sheets, as an involuntary shutter passes through him.

Alastor: "I don't have much desire to be productive either way. Ugh, I haven't been this sick since I was a child"

Lucifer: "Well, your body and magic apperently prioritize the babies so..."

Alastor, sighing: "At least that..."

magic as parasite. it needs a host. you need a body. it is growing inside you. eventually you will be formed around it instead of it around you. and then you're its plaything forever

magic as one of the worst things that can happen to you. magic as a death sentence.

i want to see more chronically ill and wasted magic users. give me people who have no choice in their deterioration, who are trying to slow the process or to burn themselves out as fast as they can. magic as an inescapable curse. magic as destiny (horror edition).

Some of my favorite magic side effects:

-Nosebleeds. Never gets old.

-Coughing up blood. The good ol’ “cough into your hand and pull it back to see blood” also never gets old.

-Headaches. You keep fighting as your head pounds, desperately telling you to take a break. At first they fade within minutes when you stop using magic, but overtime, they become chronic.

-Fatigue. After a big battle, you stand triumphant, and then just fall asleep on the spot.

-In a similar vein, overuse causing you to straight up faint rather than just fall asleep. Darkness begins to overtake your vision in the middle of battle, unconsciousness abruptly looming over you.

-Any of the side effects happening to another person. Maybe two close characters are connected, and whatever side effects character A would normally endure are transferred to character B. When A uses a blast of magic B screams loudly because holy shit that hurt.

-Magic gradually deteriorating your mind. Using it too much eventually caused hallucinations and an inability to retain memories, or even larger scale memory loss.
