Wednesday, December 7: Devin Townsend Project, “Offer Your Light”

Transcendence was a fitting capstone for the Devin Townsend Project, summing up the sounds and themes Townsend had served up under this particular banner. That meant numbers like “Offer Your Light” were simultaneously grandiose and earthbound, and used the unreal voice of Anneke van Giersbergen as much as a sound effect as a duet partner.  Depending on one’s tolerance for Townsend’s general approach, this could be either rapturous or overbearing, and the reality was that it was probably a bit of both.  But nobody conceived, arranged, performed and produced music like this, or really even thought about metal this way, so “Offer Your Light” was something that could have only come from the mind of Devin Townsend, and represented his singular talents as well as anything he recorded under the auspices of the Project.
