Oh, wow, I found a MV for the 1971 French miniseries adaptation of La Dame de Monsoreau (and set to the gorgeous theme music that started playing in my head in its entirety the moment the opening notes played.)

I don’t think any other show watched in the entirety of my childhood affected me as much or shines so much light on my long term narrative and ship preferences even as an adult plenty of years later.

And after I watched and bawled and bawled, I went and read the Dumas novel it was based on and loved it and bawled some more. To this day, it’s my favorite Dumas novel (I tend to pick the less known ones apparently - my favorite Zola novel is either Ladies’ Paradise or The Dream.) I still own the beautifully translated copy (I have never seen a good English translation btw - the one I found was super old and fussy.)

To say I was rabid about de Buddy x Diana is basically to sum up many of my ship preferences in general and to say I had an insane crush on Louis de Clermont, Comte de Bussy is basically to sum up my tastes on fictional men. He was arrogant as fuck, deadly I battle, but totally willing to negate himself for the woman he loved (the bit in the church yard where someone who won’t flinch facing an army alone is literally trembling in front of her is THE BEST) and she is married to an evil dude and their love is forbidden and doomed and oh in 45 (the sequel of sorts), she gets revenge on his killers and anyway … so much angst and drama.

I feel like finding the Russian sub version they showed when I was a kid and rewatching.

This pink gown has certainly been used quite a lot over the years. It was likely designed by Amy Roberts for the 2005 production of The Virgin Queen, where it was worn on Anne Marie Duff as Queen Elizabeth.   The gown went on to be used in The Tudors at least five times!  It was seen in the very first promotional images for the show in 2007, and also appeared in the first season on Gabriella Wright as Queen Claude.  In 2008, it appeared again in promotional material on Katie McGrath as Bess, and then again on an extra in the second season.  In 2008 the gown also made an appearance in the film La dame de Monsoreau, where it was worn on Esther Nubiola as Diana de Monsoreau. In 2009, the gown was used again in The Tudors - this time on Annabelle Wallis as Jane Seymour.  In 2010 the costume was worn on Amber Beattie as Lady Jane Grey in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures entitled Lost In Time. The dress appeared on a 2011 Corolly Erickson novel about Jane Seymour, entitled The Favored Queen, and most recently it was seen in an episode of ITV’s Victoria on Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria.

OK, confession time - instead of watching my backlog, which is massive, I am going to rewatch the 26-ep adaptation of La Dame de Monsoreau made by Russia in the late 1990s.

Prepare for flailing and bona fide hysterics at the end (no, seriously - it’s been almost 30 years since I first  got to the ending of that story, and when I think of it, I still get insane and want to revive Prince d’Anjou just to murder him, even though I know that part of that story is fictional.)

P.S. In the event you are not aware of what I am babbling about, LDdM is a novel by Alexandre Dumas about a tragic, epic and doomed love between Louis de Clermont, comte de Bussy, a nobleman sans peur ey sans reproche, a favorite of prince d’Anjou and best duelist of his time, proud and passionate and Diana de Meridor, a gorgeous and sheltered young woman who is forced to become the wife of an evil man and finds her heart swayed towards a man not her husband but who adores the ground she walks on.

What happens? Nothing good. 

It’s been adapted a number of times, but IMO the two best known and best adaptations are the 1971 French one and the 1997 Russian one.

Read Lady of Monsoreau (Chicot the Jester) for free

Known by different names in English, “La dame de Monsoreau” is a novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (father), best known for his novel “The Three Musketeers“.

Monsoreau is the second part of the trilogy “The last Valois“, that follows closely the tragic history of this French dynasty. It’s the second of the three novels, thus acting as sequel of “Queen Margot” (a.k.a. “Marguerite de Valois“), and prequel of “The Fourty-Five Guardsmen” (a.k.a. “Les Quarante-cinq“).

In this novel, Dumas focus the attention on the love triangle between Henri III‘s brother François d’Anjou, his servants Louis de Bussy d’Amboise, and Charles de Chambes (comte de Monsoreau) for the love of the wife of Charles, Diana de Meridor (the Lady of Monsoreau on the book title).

More interesting than this main topic, however, is the portrait of Henri III’s jester, Chicot, that takes the spotlight during most of the book. His abilities to detect and unmask complots will help the king retain his crown. But also, as the book progress, his cynic and cunning personality won’t be able to hide the fascinating personal link between him and Henri, which steals the readers interest from Bussy and Monsoreau’s plot. No less interesting is also the peculiar relationship between Henri III and his “Mignons”, the pack of the king`s favourites.
