Leander theory : the truth behind his eyes

I didn't have the time to write that post previously and it's a long overdue, so let's go.

I think I cracked the code about Leander, or at least found a lead that is totally probable thanks to the new elements in the update and people's comments on MC's behaviour around Leander.

Tldr : he charms/hypnotizes people with his eyes, rendering them obedient and oblivious to any harm he could cause. More below the cut !

Let me elaborate.

What first made me think about this theory is MC's behavior around Leander. Even in version 1.0, MC has been guarded about their curse, adamant on avoiding the subject, if not very reluctant even under direct threat (Ais). But that melts away almost instantly around Leander. First, they reveal the information without much difficulty. Then, they show him their hands. Even if they are a bit nervous, they do seem less reluctant than with the other characters.

In version 2.0, this is accentuated by the additions and modifications in the Leander segments, especially the branching after the tavern scene. Leander lures MC in the guest room by claiming he got information reguarding their curse, guiltrips them and faint wanting to leave to give them some space. Then we have the whole moment with Leander and MC being horny as hell, and finally Leander leaves. After he left, MC remembers why they followed Leander here in the first place, as if regaining some clarity of mind.

It's evident MC's behavior is affected around Leander in a way that surpasses simple trust. Leander is a mage, a powerful and skilled one at that. He could have totally put MC under a spell to get what he wants. And to push that, I'll argue MC is not the only victim and that he does that with pretty much everyone but mostly with outsiders (Mhin and MC). With this in mind, I then thought about how and when Leander could have charmed his victims.

It could have been with the flower he gives MC upon meeting him, but we can decline to take it. Then I thought about the "protection" spell he uses before taking MC's hand, but MC trusted him almost blindly before doing so.

That's what led me to the main conclusion and what has been under our nose this whole time : Leander charms people via his eyes. His "monster" form shadow and the teal green spec in his eyes of the same color of his magic (and broach + belt) could be indicators that at least something is up with his eyes.

Alongside the newly reinforced snake imagery, it is clear that his natural charms alone is not enough to tear down MC's guards in the span of 24 hours.

I could be wrong about the eyes as all the LIs got their eyes white in the monster form shadows, but Leander only has his eyes in white while the rest of the cast got other details in white (Ais' tattoo, Vere's chains, or other details to be able to make out some shapes). If not his eyes, I bet on his presence alone being enough. Could be via a spell, a potion, an artifact, a pact (why who though ?) anything.

That's my take on it, it's just a theory and tbh if I'm wrong I don't mind and I think I'm partially correct or put my finger onto smth >:) We'll see with the full game how close I was lmao

But Fellow... see, Mr. Honest always takes good care of his things! Sure, you might not have any agency over what your body does and so it essentially becomes a cage that houses your conscience. All you can do is watch on as your body moves of its own accord, lowering to your knees to wrap your lips around his dick or lying back on the bed so he can join you. But at least you're safe, right? Isn't that good? And he was even kind enough to keep Grim around. He's not heartless.

Fellow makes sure to dress you in pretty outfits every day, sitting you in front of the mirror and draping a lovely necklace around your throat, flattery falling from his lips in plentiful amounts. You're never debuted to the public. You're all his, a doll meant for him to enjoy in private. It can be quite stressful trying to meet shipment deadlines. You understand, don't you? A beautiful, intelligent soul like yourself would surely be the first to understand and sympathize with his plights. And relief from stress comes in many forms, some more intimate than others as you've now learned.

Look, while yes, Guys in White have an insane angst potential, you kinda have to admire them at least a little bit for their ardent dedication to Being Absolutely Fucking Awful At Catching Ghosts. Which is quite literally their governmentally mandated job, by the way.

Like, not a SINGLE win under their belt, none at all. They’re funded and supported by the government, have the newest and most cutting-edge technology and weapons, were literally trained for the job, and yet a bunch of fourteen year olds with zero experience are infinitely better at ghost-hunting than they are. JACK FENTON is better at ghost-hunting than they are. Scratch that, they’re so pathetic at doing their job that some hippies with an extremely anxious Scooby-Doo rip-off perform better than them. The closest they came to catching a ghost was when they ambushed a teenager who maybe, possibly, at certain angles looked kinda like Phantom, if you squint a little and tilt your head just so. They failed to contain a fucking Freakshow, and he’s not even a ghost, he’s just some guy!! They didn’t even catch that guy, funnily enough; Danny practically hand-delivered him to GIW and yet they lost him in what? A few months??

You know, there’s a lot of psychologist Jazz content around, and I enjoy it, but I’ve actually never read a fic where she’s a brain surgeon, the career she canonically wants. They may be out there but I’ve never seen one, and I read a lot of fic.

I’m not necessarily complaining. This is just an observation. It does make sense that she could start out wanting to be a brain surgeon and discover that she would actually prefer to become a psychologist and not have to get into the ooey-gooey of physically poking around in people’s brains, and it suits her and all that.

However, I do think there’s some missed angst potential here in the dissection/vivisection fandom as to why Jazz might decide to change her mind about wanting to cut people’s heads open.

@whcwashe mentioned a couple days ago how overlooked john's artistic ability is, including the way he's able to paint sigils with such mathematical perfection (i.e. in the nbc pilot), and i just think with how bookish he is + how adept in mathematics they show him being as a kid in dead boy's heart, it would make perfect sense for him to have researched and borrowed a lot of geometric artistic techniques from leonardo da vinci to use in the more physical aspects of magic and ritual.

Should there be concern that a lot of the relationships in his life revolve around accepting and even anticipating that others perform physical harm as a way of expressing affection? Probably. But hey, he basically asks for it by antagonizing others anyway! Surely this has no underlying cause nor will there be any issues.

Out of curiosity, have you ever met anyone who knows your content and/or SMG4 irl?

Oooh a tricky inquiry to respond to without being a tad overcautious about it. But I’ll try. And please excuse me if I end up answering this unclearly or go on a side tangent <<

I’m fairly protective of my friends and family members. I try my best to prevent them from getting recognized in the crowd of online followers, or at least obscure the legal identities (it’s easier to contact them under an unassuming username). Which is unfortunately not easy to do. It’s out of my hands if they choose to spread the information about my channel to others irl or not. Despite my attempts to separate my personal life from my YouTube channel/digital footprint…I can’t say I’ve done a good job at it lmao. I’ve already snitched & outed my YouTube channel to a couple people in college (because I was being too much of an open book/transparent dumb dumb). I suddenly learned why it’s easier to have alternative accounts for irl people to follow; instead of immediately dragging them into my online interests and getting worried about how they’ll react to all of it. I’m so much more talkative online then how I behave in-person, and I worry it might throw some people off

I’ll spare the details, but the entire online v.s irl has caused me a shocking amount of anxiety. I’ve dug myself into a situation where I have no choice but to accept the fact information could easily get leaked or strung together due to my negligence. It’s partially the reason I don’t use many tags when posting fanart; The more recognized you become online, the more likely people will dig into locating personal information. Or at least that’s how my paranoid mind views it haha. That’s on top of worrying the people irl view me differently now due to how niche my interests tend to be. This whole YouTube thing requires so much more vulnerability then I was anticipating :P

Sorry if I’m being too vague here (or even too detailed). I love the fact people irl care about me want to support me or stay in touch, but it comes with so many unspoken mental hurdles on my end. They’ve learned things about me from my videos that I wasn’t openly sharing in-person. Thankfully I’m slowly learning that anxiety tricks me into believing things are more complicated then actuality. People have no malicious intentions or issues with me, I just assume they do. It’s not them it’s me

On the flip side, have I ever meet online followers who recognize me directly from YouTube and aren’t friends or family irl? No. I’ve never been approached by a stranger who somehow pieces together that I’m the person who makes Mr. Puzzle fanart & animations online lol. Kinda hoping that it stays that way. But there’s no denying I’d be much more happy attending school if I had someone to bond over about SMG4. College is pretty bland when you can’t find people to hang out with. I’ve been able to meet cartoon/animation/video game/musical nerds, but nothing directly attributed to the SMG4 fandom. We still have quite a few overlapping hobbies tho—they are nice people :3
