About Me, My Books, and My Research (2024 Edition)
Hi, I'm Finn, a writer, medievalist, and all-round nerd. You may know me as the author of The Butterfly Assassin, "that person who wrote the trans Cú Chulainn article", the weird nerd in the Tumblr corner writing excessively long and incomprehensibly niche posts about their research, or something else entirely. I am all of those things! (Well, depending on what the 'something else' is, anyway...)
Currently, I'm a PhD student at the University of Cambridge researching friendship in the late Ulster Cycle (c. 12th-17th centuries). I have an MA in Early and Medieval Irish from University College Cork, and wrote my thesis about Láeg mac Ríangabra, my best beloved. I also have an undergrad degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from Cambridge, and wrote my dissertation about queer readings of Táin Bó Cúailnge, including transmasculine readings of Cú Chulainn.

Update. — 27th June 2023.
Happy Pride Month 🌈 to those who have been celebrating. Much love to you all.
It's been a while since a progress update which isn't great from me, but now I'm posting one with a much neater and more professional look. My thoughts are that I'll post these at least once a month so readers are always kept in the loop as I feel like I've kept you all in the dark recently about what’s been going on. Anywhoo…
Firstly, I finished my undergraduate degree! My results that came out confirmed that I'll be graduating. I’m graduating with a 1st which is the highest degree classification that can be awarded in the UK — so, this writer is kinda smart and will be throwing a grad cap in the air — so that's kind of a huge personal accomplishment!
But more importantly, in interactive fiction terms anyway, I finished chapter 10! It's done. She's a chunky chapter that's full of loads of... stuff and drama! There's so much going on in the chapter: angst, comfort, a new character, found family — so you're in for a ride, to say the least.
I made a few changes too. The reader can choose/input their own pronouns, your mc can choose whether or not they wear glasses, there are new graphics for those that play with a black background (shown below!), alongside some editorial stuff — new choices etc. It's now with the beta readers.
On top of chapter 10, there's also Tumblr stuff that will be made available. I've had a cool, chapter 10 sneak peek edit in my drafts that I'll be posting tomorrow. I hit a follower milestone, so when the public update is out I'll be doing a follower giveaway.
Soo, as an overview: in eight months I wrote a 10k word dissertation, bagged a degree, got accepted to do a master's degree, and finished writing a 73k word chapter. So, whilst I hate that this update has been a long time coming, a lot of academic stuff happened in my life which made a lot of things hectic.
I really appreciate you being patient with me. I know it's not easy or fun waiting for wip updates, but there is a Golden one on the horizon and I hope it will be worth the wait.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Peter Green, giant in Classics. He died this last Monday morning (9/16/24) at the ripe old age of 99. He was born the same year as both my parents.
Peter was not only a very fine scholar, but also a damn good writer--which isn't always true of historians. He wrote historical fiction (no, really, he did: The Laughter of Aphrodite, about Sappho, and Achilles, His Armor, about Alkibiades). And he wrote some quite excellent collections of essays: In the Shadow of the Parthenon and Classical Bearings. His Alexander to Actium--a monster book about the Hellenistic Age big enough to choke a mule--actually made money for U-Cal Press. Not common for academic books, especially of that size!
I have issues with Peter's take on Alexander, I'll be honest. In fact, it was his cheeky summary of Hephaistion as "Tall, handsome, spoilt, spiteful, overbearing and fundamentally stupid" that made the little Hephaistion sit up in my head and object: "I wasn't like that!"
And that launched a dissertation. So in a backhanded way, you can thank Peter for my work on Hephaistion.
But I want to tell you about the other Peter I knew, a genuinely helpful, friendly, and likable guy. He and his wife (Classicist) Carin Green were long-time friends of Gene Borza (my academic father) and Kathleen Pavelko (Gene's now-widow). Born in the UK, he had mid-century British Classicist training mixed with some very progressive politics that might surprise.
He also gave me the best (academic) edit job I've ever received, in now 25 years of publishing. Together with Gene, I gave a paper at the then-APA (now-SCS), which ended up becoming my first (co-authored) publication, "Some New Thoughts on the Death of Alexander the Great." Peter was there to hear, and came up after to congratulate us then quiz me about my psych background and the info I'd brought on grieving. Gene told him about the chapter in my dissertation on Alexander's mourning, and Peter said, "Send me that chapter" for Selecta Classica, of which he was editor. I warned it was long. (To the tune of 60 pages in manuscript!)
But I sent it. And he took it. Then did the edits (both academic and literary) himself. It was fantastic. I quibbled on two things. First, commas. Ha. But second, he insisted everything go back into Greek without some translations, contending anybody reading it would know the Greek. I objected. I lost. I still think that was a mistake, but it was also evidence of that mid-century Brit Classicist that assumed the only people reading it would be other Classicists.
But folks, he made that first (solo) article of mine so much better, forcing me to clarify problematic phrasing, elaborate where I'd been too brief, etc. And he did it with a light hand that allowed my own voice to come through. He became my model of How to Be A Good Academic Editor. When I edit today, I have him in mind.
Peter, thank you for all you've done, not just in print, but as a human being and mentor to young scholars, like me. I'll pour a little libation of good red wine in your memory.
With his passing goes the last of that generation of Macedoniasts.

2: a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
I've hinted at some of my thoughts on this before, but here is all the deep lore (as deep as Alucard in Trevor)
(None of this should in any way be taken to mean that Trevor exclusively bottoms. He absolutely does top sometimes and if you're already asking what he does with that whip if he's not a dom and/or top with Alucard, the answer is Hector. He's doing Hector.)
Why Alucard Would Never Bottom: a dissertation
Exhibit A: Spite
Alucard's portrayal in netflixvania has done irrevocable damage to how his character is perceived by the fandom as a whole, and this is one of many reasons why.
I refuse to acknowledge what Warren Ellis did to him and I refuse to acknowledge his rapist ocs as canon. It cannot be proof of Alucard's sexuality (I think he is bisexual for entirely different reasons, based solely on the characters I ship him with in cv3 and sotn) or what he actually does like doing in the bedroom, because it's a rape scene written by a sex pest.
I'm also refuting it out of spite for migratory slash fandoms latching onto trevorcard for the wrong reasons and forcing them into the seme/uke mold. I can't even really call it flanderization when it's not an exaggeration of traits they actually have, it's just wildly out of character. I have a deep-seated personal seething hatred of ukefication in general, and especially when it comes to pretty bishounen.
It's even worse when it's my comfort character who I somewhat relate and project onto and aspire to be as pretty as him and I WOULD NEVER DO THAT. (For personal reasons to do with me being ftm and dysphoric as hell and hating the stereotypes about it. I don't hc Alucard as trans but I know there's fans who do SOLELY because he's pretty and/or because they decided bottom=trans because of the aforementioned nfcv shit and I hate it. If vampires were real I would let them bite me though. I'm only a masochistic slut for vampires ok)
Also we just need more pretty boys topping stronk manly men ok
Exhibit B: Actual serious reasoning based on what I can extrapolate about his characterization based on the games and vampire lore in general
A very common headcanon which while I don't entirely agree with, is more accurate than how nfcv and its fans portray him, is that Alucard is aroace. And I can somewhat see it, though I see it more in the sense that I think he would be more interested in pseudo-sexual intimacy than actual sex. The sexiest of all forms of pseudo-sex is a vampire's bite (citation NOT needed). I'd go so far as to call it a type of BDSM. Feeding would be the ultimate act of love and intimacy for him, and I don't think it's something he does lightly; only with the humans who love and trust him implicitly.
Additionally, I think he'd be more interested in sex while feeding than sex by itself; both of them at once being filled with the other's warmth.

6: which ship fans are the most annoying?
I've curated my dash enough to not see any of it on tumblr, but trephacard shippers still manage to annoy me by cluttering up the tags for the games on ao3. The sheer amount of fics that get filtered out when I filter it out is just depressing. They get all three of them completely wrong (which is mostly the shows writers fault but they still get compressed even further into flanderized molds) They're sleeping on Grant when they could be sleeping with Grant and leaving him out of the polycule is an instant red flag that it's a netflixvania fic

8: common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
The common headcanon that Alucard is oblivious to or disinterested in romance. I'd like to think he does reciprocate Maria's and the curse polycule's feelings. It's not that he doesn't want to be with any of them, but that he keeps his distance and goes to sleep out of a misguided desire to protect them from himself and believing he doesn't belong with humans because of the vampire half of himself; all the while pining that they cannot be together. I don't think that was an easy decision for him to make.

12: the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I know she is beloved in our corner of the fandom here but Julia
I feel like outside of here, people just see her as Hector's obligatory love interest or as a replacement for Rosaly. She is so much more than that. I feel like there is so much that CoD only hints at on a surface level.
I've been thinking more thoughts about her lately, admittedly in relation to Isaactor-centric fic ideas but I feel like she's taken on more of a distinct personality that cannot be interchangeable with any other character.
I think anyone who appreciates Isaac should appreciate her too; I'd like to think they're not as different as they seem in CoD

I moved out of the US a few months ago.
Not specifically because of the current political climate (I'm incredibly privileged to be a cis-white-straight-presenting woman so I can hide in plain sight for the most part as long as no one asks for ID), but it certainly helped make the move feel easier. I moved for a ton of reasons that were largely personal, but it all boiled down to: a bitch can't heal if she's always on fire. So now I'm watching my friends and family on fire from very far away, and I have a touch of survivor's guilt despite the fact that they're all safe (currently). This isn't a post about that though, just felt like I needed to acknowledge that I'm starting regular blogging probably because I'm feeling guilty, lonely, out of place or some combination of those. Totally great reason to talk shit about things, right?
I'm nearly a third of the way through my MSc program in the UK and one thing is abundantly clear - group projects suck more than a nun's bunghole. I'd even argue that they suck even more with the advent of widely accessible AI. Now I won't get into the objective downsides and problems with AI or my own personal moral qualms with the way the models are built and trained, but I will say that people use it as a damn crutch and it's annoying.
AI can be such an interesting tool if used correctly and, with how ubiquitous it's becoming, it's important to understand what role it plays in the future of any industry. You wanna know what it's not though? A replacement for doing actual fucking work. Like, genuinely, this group project is not particularly difficult in terms of the requirements themselves, but the group work aspect has made it damn near impossible. "Oh well, Tabi, being able to work in a group means that..." Oh shut your trap, imaginary well-meaning internet stranger. It's gotten to the point where one of these people is about as useful as tits on a mouse and my grade (& consequently my visa) is tied to that person.
So yeah I'm going to talk shit. A lot.
Now, my personal use of AI is limited to asking it to tell me how in the hell to use a machine at the gym or what a tool I've been using to pry open a busted utility door is actually for, so I'm no master prompt-writer. I know there are people who can wordsmith their way into some pretty awesome shortcuts and genuinely useful things, but, at the very least, I think I have a lot of learning to do before I can even consider using AI to help me out (and that doesn't even account for my moral qualms).
I'd like to point out that Mr. TitMouse is definitely not one of those legendary AI gurus. He brings AI-generated work to group meetings that's so generic I'm surprised Walmart hasn't found a way to sue him. It's like he gave the poor AI a two-word prompt and then expected a persuasive dissertation. I can just picture our poor, budding robot overlord asking for a hammer to use, getting a Fisher Price tool set instead, but still doing their best to build what they were asked for.
All that to say: if you're going to do something bad, at least be the best at it. I've spent a few too many drives home ranting about how if he didn't want to work, he could use AI in much smarter ways, but nope this guy would rather do absolutely nothing and then try to mansplain the process to anyone who will listen. I was pleasantly surprised when he offered to do actual work last week, but, upon actually looking at the "work" today, he's basically disregarding everything the group had agreed upon and using his own, barely-formed-enough-to-call-generic drafts to create the least functional thing I've ever seen. I know the other group members are trying but this guy is really dragging everyone down. I'm a glutton for punishment though, so I'm going to let him do his thing, make my own in the background and test both out in the wild to see which people prefer. Is it technically more work? yes. To answer your question, I graduated with my master’s degree last year! For my undergraduate degree, I studied Journalism and Communication with a minor in Theatre (for funsies). For grad school, I studied Organizational Communication. That really geared me towards jobs in marketing, social media, public relations, that sort of thing. But, I guess the Journalism degree gives me some writing background? But im not necessarily a professional writer, no. I have a few jobs - one in email marketing, another in social media management, and my main one is as an marketing assistant for an Irish travel company. I do *some* writing for that job, mostly blogs for their website and stuff. It can be creative for sure, but it’s only a small aspect of what I do really. In a perfect world, I’d be a writer, but I fear the only thing I’ll ever publish is fanfic. But that’s okay, because I love engaging on here with you guys!!!
