Devil May Cry's Goddess of Time
Thinking about how it's just sortof accepted that there is a lion-headed omniscient god of time and space who distributes character upgrades? What's up with that?
Tumblr media
Some pieces of information that I find relevant:
There is a Divinity Statue of the goddess of time located at a shrine within the grounds of Sparda's estate (DMC 5)
Sparda sacrificed a human priestess to seal the portal to the demon world at the Temen-ni-gru (DMC 3). There's only one identified goddess who holds authority in the setting, so she would have been a priestess of the Goddess of Time.
What I mean by the above is that there are no "angels" or reliance upon Judeo-Christian divinity in the DMC setting - anything that appears angelic is just a demon (DMC 4). The idea that "holy water" damages demons as established in DMC 1 could very well be an idea syncretized with the Shinto concept that running water and waterfalls are sacred and used for spiritual purification. Holy water is also an item purchased from the Goddess of Time, so it's pretty direct about which divinity it comes from.
The Yamato is also identified as a thing that seals the connection between the human and demon worlds (DMC 4). (Edit: and the Japanese for Vergil's "Void Slash" attack with the Yamato literally translates to "time-space fury flash" (DMC 5))
The Yamato represents the part of Sparda's power that "was named to embody a god of death" (DMC 5). Despite being phonetically pronounced as 'Yamato', it is known that "The Yamato's Japanese name is written as 'Enma Katana' (閻魔刀 Enmatō), referring to the Japanese name for the Hindu and Buddhist judge of the afterlife, 'Yama'" - wiki.
The goddess of time holds an hourglass, and outrunning the hourglass is connected to the idea of escaping samsara - the cycle of life, death, and rebirth (DMC 3, Mission 19)
So there's this famous text in Hinduism called the "Bhagavad Gita" that dates to the first or second century BCE. In the English language it is the origin of the Oppenheimer quote: "Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds", which is misrepresenting verse 11.32. The actual translation is something closer to "now I have become world-destroying time". As I understand it, the concepts of "time" and "death" are intertwined in a belief system based on reincarnation and cyclical history in such a way as to cause confusion with interpretation of the meaning when translated.
My impression of how this applies to Devil May Cry (at least as of the worldbuilding codified by DMC 3): Sparda bargained with the Goddess of Time for the power to separate the human and demon worlds. What Sparda got out of the bargain is embodied in the Yamato. And what the Goddess of Time got from the bargain is that Sparda and all of his descendants are obligated to deliver to her demon blood and are bound to the cycle of life-death-rebirth (i.e. the videogame mechanic of being able to re-try a level over and over again) until she decides to release them into death.

The symbolism of the snake embroidery on Vergil's clothes and my theories on how he might have acquired his outfit. (he's broke asf he didn't get it with money guys)
In the first Devil May Cry novel we learn that teenager Dante had his red jacket custom made. He is actually pissy about it when it gets ruined with bullet holes. He then wears a fuckass black jacket, which makes him look embarrassing.
Dante was drinking and using firearms when he was 15 or 16 years old; but he had a job (albeit his job being a MERCENARY. Also twins being European really shows because he was having drinking contests as a fucking 15 year old, god), so he had enough money to buy himself a custom made jacket. But the thing is, we don’t know how teenager Vergil got his outfit. It’s too well made to be bought in a normal store. Vergil probably had no money—though it is hinted that after Mundus' attack, young Vergil may have used public transportation (I also have a headcanon that he didn't know how to open a portal until he was at least 12 so that makes sense) and even bought himself food. These may have happened before or after the attack but let's say after the attack since Sparda, Eva, and the twins were living a secluded life. Still, being homeless and constantly on the run, his concept of the value of money is more like ‘money’ and ‘a LOT of money.’ He had no use for finance; what important was to get powerful and gain knowledge.
So, he probably didn’t get it with money. Vergil was never in one place long enough to earn money. I also don't see him as someone who would kill or hurt people to steal their money (he actually kinda did it in VoV,,, but that was different), so the idea of custom made clothing bought with human currency doesn't sit with me.
He might have used demonic magic to create his outfit. We see a demonstration of this in DMC5 with Trish, who uses her magic to literally recreate her entire outfit. This is very weird and left unexplained, which frustrates me because I need to rationalize things. Perhaps demons can do this because they can infuse anything with their demonic energy, and since the clothes they wear are made of organic material, they can recreate or even sew them back together. In Vergil's case, it's more like 'create a whole new outfit in mind's eye and boom now you have a ridiculous cravat.'
Another possibility is that he had it custom-made, but not with human currency. Demons, or at least a certain demonic/supernatural entity (the God of Time, aka the Divinity Statue), accept red orbs as a form of payment.
Vergil probably visited many places on his trauma blind journey of gaining power. I might overdo here, but what if he came across a strange tailor and they made a deal like, "You give me 70 thousand red orbs, and I give you a slutty vest, a ridiculous cravat, nice shoes and a cool coat with snake embroidery on it." and Vergil was like "Aight." Maybe he was intending to infuse his outfit with his magic anyway. It was a win-win situation.
It's funny to imagine Vergil designing his outfit, just being a teenager for once.
So, Vergil could have saved up red orbs to get a cool coat. Demonic establishments are kind of canon, so that’s a possibility. He was a teenager it’s only natural that he liked teenager things, even in his traumatized and hunted state. At a certain point in his life, he became strong enough to indulge in some of his likes.
Speaking of snake embroidery, Vergil has SO MUCH snake symbolism on him, and on his clothes too! Snakes were adored and respected throughout history before paganism started to get shitted on. Snakes represent wisdom, REBIRTH, healing, transformation, and knowledge. That’s why Satan, disguised as a snake, gave Eve the apple (knowledge) (also, knowledge of the occult was really given to women first). The snake detail on his clothes might even be magic, too. It's nearly an occult symbol on its own. Maybe a sigil? I know sigils aren't a thing in DMC but I don't care I'll go apeshit with my theories.
Whether the serpent detail was intentional or unintentional, it’s still a great detail considering his story and character. He goes through transformation (Nero Angelo), then rebirth (Vergil rebirth party in DMC5), and healing (basically the whole plot of Visions of V).
So, just teenager Vergil researching the occult and being fascinated with the symbolism of the serpent. OR he straight up stole it. :l This bitch split his demonic and human self apart and like 1 day after his human self came to existence he had to deal with money and his first thought was to steal it. Anyway, that's all. Have a good day!

Nero Sparda Rewrite (Devil May Cry)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When i first watched the cutscenes for Dmc4, we had a slight dislike for Nero. Which was mostly based on the fact that he feels a lot like another Dante and didn't really fit the Games premise. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact this kid with a demon arm and white hair came around and they were like "oh yes your allowed into this church" yes. He fights demons (which could be them using him as a knight) in the beginning yes he hides it in a cast but come on. He couldn't have been doing that forever so We came up with a worse idea.
A Child washes up on the lake behind The Order of the Sword, Where Sanctus finds him, crying, blood flowing from his tiny body. Similar to stories of the Messiah, they take him in and take in account his impressing healing abilities. 5 sisters are assigned to raise him while they pledge they know of their new savior, but that he must be hidden away from the public eye. Praising the heavens and the Father for this gift of divine.
Until around the age of 7. The child's arm begins to grow dark blue unnatural veins starting at the finger tips, morphing into sharp claws and glowing tendons. It's then they realize the full demonic power of the boy, his arm glows and holds power inhuman, sharp razor teeth (that has something to do with my redesign of all the sparda family in general). Thinking he may have been cursed by some unholy force, they baptize him repeatedly, every day for hours. Praying over him, doing everything in the highest power they can to try and reverse the curse he's obtained. As we know though it's not a curse, and the veins continued to spread until his entire arm glowed blue. The boy was claimed to be under demonic possession. In attempts to 'exorcise' him, they cut off his demonic arm and hurt him, refusing to give him real treatment, only patching both of his eyes and arm stump with dirty bandages never to be cleaned or redone, blinding him. To keep him away from people, he must be even more isolated. So they did the most rational thing and chained him behind the Main Sparda statue, guarded by gates and hidden from the public eye still.
(The thing with the Order of the Sword here is that they don't worship Sparda directly, they use him as a symbol of overcoming sin but they still worship God and condemn demons.)
Sanctus baptized the rest of the children they took in and the idea of not being around him was branded into their minds. But that didn't stop them.
Like goblin children usually do behind the backs of the harsh sisters, they ridiculed him at any chance. Calling him the antichrist, throwing rocks at him and even as he grew older, Credo used him at training practice. But by the second his senses became stronger, even if he couldn't see he started becoming more sensible to noise. The feeling of sword swings, steps. As more time passes and he isn't removed like they said he would be, he's able to detect movements of meters away based on vibration. He grows to adapt to fighting styles and learns to fight back.
By the 4th Game, he's grown to 17. The chain never changed, leaving a gaping scar on his neck (its damage done over many many years which makes me think it wouldnt heal? Well yes heal. But stay deformed) Dante arrives to assassinate Sanctus. With a sword from a fallen soldier, Nero attacks him. With the swing of Dante's sword, his chains are cut from his neck(ripped off and bleeding) and he's free. Dante escaped and Nero goes after him, still holding the belief that Sanctus is a loving higher power. Also getting an in my head cool game mechanic, where the games vision blurs at points if not goes out for seconds as Nero moves along his mind, to simulate his blindness to the player and his mental state becoming more and more messed up as he feels more in control. His final main weapon became a giant great sword that encased the Yamato hidden inside. (Part of Dante's mission to find)
While fighting, his objective changes. From revenge for Sanctus to learning about their deceit, instead putting the pain he has felt for years on someone or something not him. Leading up to the end of the game where after rescuing Kyrie and she promptly rejects anything to do with him, he loses it, getting the church together to declare himself as the new god to be worshipped, reclaiming his lost title of the savior he once had. He begins threatening and hurting civilians in the process with weapons he got on his way through the game.
The final battle is of Dante fighting Nero instead of the weird plot of a giant statue. Once he's down, Dante picks him up and chooses to fix him up instead of killing him. A very slow and painful process which often takes more efford than Dante is willing to give him but it works out also Nero is uh. A Healer now bc he finds that helping people brings him joy. Yes, he can fight but prefers to help civilians out of the situations he follows the crew in 5. (Long hair DMC4, buzzcut DMC5)
There's many more lore plot details but they're secret<3 We hope you like this weird au we've been waiting for a little while. We've been working on it for a while and are proud of it. It's not 100% finished but we're proud.

Romancing Mr Half-Devil | SPARDA’S HISTORY
PAIRINGS: Vergil Sparda (Devil May Cry) x Alessa Vera (Original Character)
SUMMARY: the history of the lovers’ family, and how fate binded them together.
Tumblr media
Many know the tale of Sparda, the strongest of all demons, who defeated and brought an end to the Demon King, Mundus. But what the books often forget is that Sparda was not alone when he started his rebellion. Accompanying him were two remarkable humans: a holy priestess and the first devil hunter.
Ludwig Vera, a nobleman from the time when Sparda still served Mundus, is recorded as the first devil hunter in history. He hunted demons with a legendary weapon, a trick-sword that would become a cherished family heirloom for centuries: The Holy Eclipse. This blade, rumored to be blessed by the holy priestess, could only be wielded by those who shared Ludwig’s blood. The Holy Eclipse, a chosen twin-blade that transformed into a dual-wielded saber and dagger, was said to have annihilated hundreds of thousands of demons during Sparda’s rebellion.
Ludwig met Sparda during a mission, and the two dueled fiercely. Sparda, impressed by Ludwig’s power, struggled to defeat him. Some say Ludwig had a significant influence on Sparda’s decision to turn against Mundus. Demons feared the Vera name for its sheer strength and the legacy of power that Ludwig’s descendants would uphold. An honorable man, Ludwig swore his clan to fight demons for eternity.
Next, there was the Holy Priestess, Sienna of the Solari. During Sparda’s rebellion, witch trials were rampant, and Sienna became a target. Her people were massacred by demons, leaving her the sole survivor. Belonging to a religion known as Sacra Divina, which revered the Goddess Of Light - the goddess taking form in the Divinity Statues all around the world, could channel divine abilities through her faith. Caught using these abilities, she was nearly burned by the common folk. Sparda, however, rescued her. In gratitude, she helped seal the Temen-Ni-Gru, her blood mixing with the Devil’s.
With the battle won and no more blood to be shed, the devil hunter and the holy priestess found solace in each other, creating a family line destined to intersect with Sparda’s. Their descendants would continue to battle demons threatening humankind. Unfortunately for them, they were only mortals, which meant that they could not accompany their demon friend for much longer. Despite this, Sparda stayed close to their families, honoring the bond he shared with the two humans who accepted him despite his monstrous nature.
Eventually, Sparda made a family of his own. The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda became known to humans as either a myth, a god to be worshipped, or a terror to those who faced him. Through his enduring presence, he bridged the worlds of humans and demons, leaving a legacy that intertwined with those of Ludwig Vera and Sienna, the holy priestess.
But to his family: his loving wife, Eva and his pride & joy Dante and Vergil - he was nothing but a normal man that loved and took care of them.
And as a reunion for old friends: he invited the Vera family, that also has two children with them, Alessa and Hector, unaware that by doing so, he’d connect their family into one and destroy it.

I listen to a LOT of music, right? mostly the DMC soundtrack. so heres some shit i just found interesting while listening and noticing stuff, in no particular order:
In Nevan's theme, if you listen really closely from about 1:15 - 1:27, you can hear a background track really similar to 0:31 - 0:44 in Ultra Violet. Its not exactly the same but it was similar enough to make me pause for a minute and go back to listen again. Similar to above, in The Duel, if you listen closely throughout the song you'll notice that guitar riff sounds traumatically familiar to 0:37 - 0:48 in ASSAULT from DMC 2 (aka, that stupid fucking helicopter.) Intentional? Probably not, but i cant listen to that track the same way again lol The choir in Vergil 3 and Devils Never Cry are actually the same, just in Vergil 3 the pacing of it has been shifted a little, and in Devils Never Cry its a little slower also. It has the same notes in the same order otherwise. Also in Vergil 3, have you ever noticed how playful the track seems in parts? Most notably, the beginning? I plan to write a full analysis of all 3 of Vergil's themes in DMC 3, but i just found this interesting to note considering how otherwise serious the fight is. And also in Devils Never Cry, ive noticed the beginning sounds eerily like what you'd hear at a funeral, especially with that church organ in the background. Fitting, for a scene right after Vergil lets himself fall into hell. this one is probably obvious but can go unrealized, but DMC 5's Divinity Statue theme is the only DV statue theme in the series that isn't primarily a chior track. The track "Public Enemy", as it's named in DMC 5, is named "Pubic Enemy" on Spotify. Actually all of DMC 1's soundtrack on Spotify is a long sex joke. (Pubic Enemy, Red Hot Juice, Final Penetration, IM COMING!, and Blue Orgasm)
DMC 3's Mission 4 theme is actually saying all the deadly sins, which took me an embarassingly long time to realize. that squeaky noise heard in the background of EYE OF THE WIND in DMC 2 is actually first heard in ST-07 in DMC 1. For some reason i thought that squeaky noise was a DMC 2 exclusive thing because its just that annoying. Yamato 2 in DMC 4 from 0:15 - 0:50 uses the same kind of violin track that's used in most - if not all - of Arkham's scenes in DMC 3 (a good example being this track from 0:10 - 0:40), which i also find interesting considering how much of a story point Vergil was in that game, and how Yamato in a way represents him in DMC 4. anyway thats all for now i may reblog in the future with more discoveries if i find them :]

So in case anyone is having trouble following along: the Order of the Sword is a church devoted to worshiping the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda as the savior of humanity. Their ultimate goal is to rule over the entire world as a theocracy based on protecting mankind from demons with the church as the absolute authority. The novelization which was written by the same scenario writer for the game reveals that when they found out about Dante they were extremely disappointed in him, because he's too human and runs an unglamorous ltitle demon hunting business and eats pizza (I am NOT making that up that is 100% real). So rather than propping up Dante as their living messiah, instead they decided to construct this artificial Savior, probably inspired by Mundus since it is all but confirmed that they visited Mallet Island after the events of DMC1.
Their plan is to bust open these demon gates and unleash a demonic apocalypse upon the world, and then ride in like the cavalry with their Angelo holy knights constructed out of demon/human soul blending and their massive statue of a Savior fueled by a descendant of Sparda, so that they can "save the world" and be ushered in as the divine rulers of all mankind forever. So they're basically falseflagging a demon invasion just so they can instantly squash it and get all the credit for saving mankind just like Sparda did so long ago.
...... isn't it kinda funny how that's like. The OPPOSITE of what the slutrabbits plan is in the Netflix Devil May Cry show? When you think about it? I doubt that was intentional lol.
Anyway it's kinda fun how Dante is watching this whole thing go down and he's basically like "lol, cute." You really get the sense that after dealing with Mundus, this whole evil church scheme is beneath Dante. The Savior might as well be bootleg Mundus. Mundus we have at home. This guy is NOTHING to him. And since Nero is being a lazy little brat and sleeping in, looks like it's time for good ol' uncle Dante to clean up the mess...

glory to humanity, death to the gods.  this is the final doctrine left by the wolf-father.  despite the eastern hemisphere still reeling from their crusade one thousand years later,  agreyas remains reverent in every nation that adored them.  while the rest of the world damns them as butcher and traitor,  the last of their disciples choose to remember agreyas’ benevolence before their madness.
∗    AGREYAS OF KAZYVA.  THE HARBINGER,  DEATH-BRINGER.  WRITTEN IN AFFILIATION WITH GODLED’S ŠEŘITSE.
‧‧‧    before you read.   agreyas’s story and character contains themes of war, religious themes, blasphemy, violence, et cetera.

‧‧‧   monadic entities are entities that were either created or blessed by the monad. in agreyas’ case, they were born independent from the monad and was later blessed when their strength caught the monad’s eye.

II. LIFE AND DEATH.
born in the midst of the iron age,  their birth is similar to that of their compatriots.  one day, there was nothing.  then, there was something,  and that something was an entity with no creator and no ill intention.  and just as it so often goes with gods, the story of their creation depends on the narrative.  according to one version,  agreyas was born in the mountains west of kazyva and when they breathed their first breath,  it snowed for the first time.  confused and alone,  agreyas wandered the land in search of purpose,  and in that time,  they saw the fallout of their birth.  famine, illness, death—  all because they were alive and didn’t know how to control it,  but still,  humanity persevered.  they would only find answers when the monad descended from the skies and instead of killing them for their misdeeds,  gave agreyas their blessing.  now imbued with knowledge from their overlord,  they brought an end to winter and would maintain the seasonal cycles and death as they saw fit. this is only one of many stories.
despite their tedious beginnings,  agreyas became known as a loving god,  and death came as a comfort to all within their cult.
however,  not all good things last.  in the ninth century,  the monad is killed and the deicides erupt,  and no part of the world is sparred.  as death itself,  agreyas was obliged to take a position of neutrality,  and for the next two decades,  they would abide by that logic—  but they were not immune to grief or guilt.  one by one,  their comrades fell,  all of them ranging from gods they knew for centuries and thaumaturges they’ve fostered since youth.  years of war tore their heart apart for the worst,  and after spiraling for long enough,  agreyas abandoned any shred of pacifism for what they believed was right.  instead of choosing between the natural order or new hierarchy,  they chose their own solution:  kill all gods and hand power over to humanity.
for three years,  their crusade was relentless.  hundreds of gods died by their hand in what they believed to be a mercy,  and were it not for their killer,  they would’ve succeeded in killing them all.  eager to bring the war to a close,  the monad’s usurper challenged agreyas themself.  when the dust settled and the sun set,  the usurper barely prevailed,  and agreyas was dead.
but agreyas did not die quietly. no, at the moment of their death,  the fallout of their last breath was so devastating it nearly killed the already weakened usurper and damned their part of the world in a regional ice age that would last decades.  the conditions at their death site were even worse,  so much so that even gods and other entities could not step near their resting place without freezing to death.  as a result,  their corpse remained untouched and unreachable for centuries.
III. POST-MORTEM.
one thousand years after their death,  conditions at agreyas’ death site were letting up,  and it became manageable enough for thaumaturges to traverse the mountains,  albeit still with the risk of incurable stigmata—  but soldiers had no say in their decisions,  and domitsian,  former lord of the ensemble’s tenth legion,  ordered a search and excavation of agreyas’ corpse.  it took one year and too many preventable deaths,  but eventually,  agreyas’ corpse was found beneath the snow and brought to domitsian.  his intentions were to consume agreyas’ blood and derive their abilities,  but these plans never came to pass.  domitsian would be killed by his protégé,  ashina kesar,  and kesar would assume lordship over the legion and all his assets.
for two years, agreyas would remain at rest until kostyantyn akhmetov,  a young operative for the legion,  consumes a portion of their blood.  despite almost dying,  kostyantyn survives the consumption.  agreyas incarnates.
IV. AGREYAN THEOPHAGES.
agreyan theophages refer to theophages who had derived their abilities from agreyas.  due to their long existence and friendliness with their human believers,  agreyas would bestow the blessing of their blood to those they believed were worthy of it.  many of these figures would be hailed as prophets or heroes among their respective cultures.
but unfortunately,  when agreyas turned their fury to the gods,  the world condemned the existence of their theophages in turn.  agreyan theophages would be mass purged for the next century,  and the ones that did survive took refuge in nations far away and died with their faith unspoken.  most of these individuals held little political or social power with exception of kazymyr ii of kazyva,  first grand prince of khoryv.  although he began his life as a good man,  he would be remembered as one of the most notorious thaumaturges of his time for the abandonment of his throne and warmongering;  a corruption that was likely due to his contraction of stigmata and the consumption of various entities.  above all,  he’s immortalized as one of the only humans that successfully killed gods.
kazymyr dies in 982 A.D,  and his death is generally considered the last time the world saw agreyas power.  his daughter and agreyan theophage,  the grand princess predslava,  would mark the true end of the agreyan theophages entirely when she dies in 994 A.D.  no agreyan theophage would appear for the next one thousand years until kostyantyn akhmetov.  as of today,  he remains the only one of his kind.
while kostyantyn’s criminal identity has been on the registry for years,  debate on whether or not the black hound should be classified as an agreyan theophage is still ongoing.
V. MISCELLANEOUS.
‧‧‧   agreyas did everything in their power to make sure they died in their human form specifically.  due to their non-human biology and the conditions of their death site,  they would never undergo the stages of decay and is perfectly preserved.
‧‧‧   although agreyas is a prominent god in various different nations,  modern-day kazyva claims them as a cultural figure and hero due to their involvement in national history.  they can be seen in several different monuments and worship of them is still very popular.
‧‧‧   in celebration of the transition from winter to spring,  effigies resembling agreyas would be created and then burned to symbolize the death of winter.

hi pls tell me what devil may cry is and where can i find/read/watch it 👀
Yeah of course :D
dmc is a game series currently consisting of 5 games, primarily following the half-demon devil hunter Dante as he engages in petty rivalry with his twin brother Vergil tries to protect humanity from various demonic threats
Aesthetically, it combines a modern setting with some gothic elements (ratios of these vary depending on which game you're playing, 5 for example leans a bit more towards the modern side than previous games.)
As for reading or watching, there's the 2007 anime, and a selection of light novels and manga, all of which i believe should be available through Divinity Statue! My personal recommendations are the Deadly Fortune novels, which cover the plot of dmc 4 (and iirc the art was done by the same person who did the art for the Trinity Blood novels), and Visions of V, which you should definitely read after dmc 5 it gives some incredible insights into Vergil's character!
ALSO there's the new netflix show coming out on April 3! As far as I know it is not in the same continuity as the games, but it does look like it will be drawing inspiration from dmc 1 and the dmc 3 prequel manga
but yeah please check out devil may cry its really good
