Neptune greetings from Gdansk

A landmark of Gdansk, this rococco art masterpiece was finished in 1633.

It is placed on the main Dlugi Square in the old city center.

The god of sea, freshwater, earthquake and horses was called Neptune by the Romans, and was adopted from the greek god Poseidon. Poseidon/Neptune was a powerful and illtempered primary Olympian god in the greek/roman pantheon of Antiquity. He was the brother to the king of god Zeus in Greek Mythology, and the equivalent Jupiter with the Romans.

Suitable, the fountain of Neptune in Gdansk shows his temper using his trident to whip up a freshwater spring being the source and foundation of the statue. It is placed in front of the Artous Court, the meeting house for merchants and social life of old. Today a part of the City museum.

Hours later he was stabbed, while on stage at the charity’s evening gala, by a lone attacker. People queued up to give blood. But despite doctors’ efforts, Mr Adamowicz died the following afternoon. He was 53 years old. Mr Adamowicz, who had held the post of mayor of Poland’s sixth-largest city since 1998 and was re-elected last autumn, was known for his liberal views.  In central Gdansk people held a vigil at Dlugi Targ (Long Market) on the evening of January 14th 2019.
