Actually after thinking about it I take back what I said in a hateful haze at 2am:
The problem isnt inherently about there being an entire population of peaceful demons who have no desire to drink human blood in hell, because yeah, at the end of the day, its devil may cry: demons have the capability for love, compassion and grief (Sparda, Trish, Lucia in a way...) while on the opposite, humans have the capability for great evil (Arkham, Arius, Sanctus, Agnus and the order of the sword), Yin and Yang and all that. While I think this is kind of unnessecary and shouldnt be an important plot point, it can be an interesting concept to explore.
But the excecution.
If they wanted to add depth and "nuance" to the population of hell to make a parallel to how our real human-world is "nuanced", why is it so damn simple? There are only two groups, the oppressors and the oppressed (three if you count the third group, the Wild Beasts™️), is there a demon middle-class or something? Do the majority of demons not know about the human realm, just the elite all evil few?
The oppressors demons look cartoonishly montrous and evil as you'd expect for dmc enemies, tho they are all kind of the same flavor of bland and unoriginal, we're pretty far from the diversity of the games, too much humanoids for my tastes. The most original and visually interesting demons are obv the ones from the games (tho the most original features of agni and rudra (head swords with headless bodies) are erased). But all that can be excusable enough.
The oppressed demons are all humanoids, they wear clothes, some of them have human eyes, they eat homemade meals with food from hell, they care for their children the same way humans do, they make toys for them the same way humans do, they have funerals... they're humans with fur or green scales.
And like? Where's the human equivalent of that? Our "evil" humans still look human. If the point was to show us that "Not All Demons Are Bad", why do those "good" demons look and behave so differently and humanly? Make me sympathize with a freaky empusa then.
And what about Nevan? She looks human enough, is she less "evil" than, idk, Cerberus?
Also the plot point of "hell is too toxic for weak demons but conveniently not for strong demons, and the weak have no other options than to leave hell for earth", ok so how many demons crossed the portals to breathe, how many crossed the portals just for the love of the game and eat people, and how many crossed the portals to breathe AND eat people? (And Im not talking about the white rabbit's portals, if there has been enough demons that have crossed over to warrant the creation of a state-approved demon hunting team, those portals open often.)
And how can you even find a satisfying solution to this problem? Either you pull the same bullshit explanation to get rid of the toxic air the same way you introduced it, aka magic quantum science cleaned it up so weak demons can live in hell again yippie! Even tho then you literally ruin your attempt to make a point. Or you go the "humanity accepts and cohabit with terrifying-looking demons (to them) who promise not to eat anyone" route, which is frankly naive, especially when you do all that to try and introduce nuance in both human and demon population in the first place.
(Tho honestly it wouldnt surprise me that white people would be more accepting toward literal demons from hell with whom they share no history than people of color)
Anyway this entire good faith argument is pointless because why would you take a franchise like devil may cry to make a critique of America and the Bush era.
#okay last thing I'll say but I think this is overall my biggest issue#anyway this show is doomed from the start bc it will try to solve a real-life world problem#which has no solution#tagging later#dmc

Okay I told myself that I was done discussing the Netflix anime. After this, we go back to never thinking about this again.
I was just glancing at a few different social media sites to see which way the fandom's opinion was going on the anime, and I saw this Reddit post that gave me a realization. This ties into the "I believe the show is bad on its own merits, not just bad in comparison to canon DMC" point I made in my last wrap up post about the show
The White Rabbit's entire plan is just... completely stupid and counterproductive. I'll put the rest under the cut for spoilers, and be warned I'm actually going to be engaging with the refugee allegory the show tried to set up.
So here's the part of the Reddit post (titled "The political commentary in the anime is a mess") that made me think about this:
Dante very correctly in universe points out that "tearing down the wall" i.e. allowing mass demon immigration, would lead to the genocide of humanity. Needless to say this has a whole host of troubling implications regarding the political metaphor it's going for. It basically reads as being an endorsement of the white supremacist idea that immigration is "white genocide" or will "destroy the west" or whatever. The nature of the human/demon conflict as it's presented just does not work as an immigration allegory unless you concede this, which as I say is troubling.
Source
I agree with this poster completely. I couldn't put it into words, but that entire exchange with Dante left me with a very uneasy, icky, uncomfortable feeling as I was watching. Because I agree with the message that refugees are not monsters and they deserve life and stability and happiness just like anyone else... but Dante is actually right about needing to keep demons out of the human realm. The show itself doesn't even try to dispute it, because in the .05 seconds the barrier is down at the climax, humans start getting absolutely annihilated by numerous extremely dangerous demons.
I could get into all the reasons why I think this fails as an allegory for xenophobia, but that's not really the point of this post.
The point of this post is that the White Rabbit's plan makes no sense.
I find it very odd that the argument between Dante and the White Rabbit was so binary. The conclusion was basically "Mundus is making everything terrible in the demon world, so either you let us all into the human world or you don't and we all die". At no point did anyone posit the solution of just... getting rid of Mundus? The guy causing the entire problem for the demon realm in the first place? Nope it's just "barrier, or no barrier". There is no secret third option of "keep the barrier and get rid of Mundus".
I actually think this could have been an incredible Dante scene as well. White Rabbit and Lady are representing two ends of an extreme, two all-or-nothing solutions. Dante is literally someone who exists with one foot in both sides of this conflict, as a half demon/half human hybrid. He was in the perfect position to go "hey, wait a minute, why are we fighting over the barrier? Why don't we just go kick this Mundus guy's ass?" But instead he just sides with Lady and they close the barrier.
And then it made me think... what exactly would tearing the barrier down do for the people White Rabbit is trying to save? Because if Mundus is the one making the demon realm suck, and Mundus can access the human realm... why wouldn't he just make the human realm suck too? White Rabbit's plan does nothing to address the actual core of the problem, and so the problem would just be doomed to repeat itself.
I'm trying to be fair and look at this from all angles. The best Devil's Advocate counterargument I can think of is that maybe White Rabbit didn't intend to keep the barrier down permanently. Being able to take the barrier up and down at will would make it easier to move refugees. Maybe his plan is to open the barrier and let all the good demons through, then close it again to prevent them from being followed by the bad demons... but that is demonstrated in the anime itself to not work.
We see what happens when the barrier goes down and then back up, and it's that all of the demons who didn't pass through one of Rabbit's tears seem to just phase back into the demon realm. That's what happened in the .05 seconds the barrier was down. A bunch of demons terrorized humans, and then the second it went back up no matter where they were standing or what they were doing they phased back out of existence. They only seem to "stick" in the human realm if they were already in the human realm when the barrier went down.
So his plan has to be to just remove the barrier entirely and let Demons flow in freely. In which case, Mundus would just expand his rule and there would be nowhere safe for anyone to go. They would all just be back exactly where they started, except humans wouldn't exist anymore or would be enslaved or something I guess.
You could maybe argue that the annihilation of humans is White Rabbit's ultimate goal... but uh, that wraps back around to what the Reddit poster said here. It comes off as far more white supremacist if the character representing the side of the refugees is just actually genocidal and doesn't care about the safety of the refugees. Which completely destroys the allegory they were likely going for.
So yeah, I'm comfortable saying that this allegory just wasn't very well thought out and didn't receive the deft touch required to make it work. It results in something that is nonsensical and counter to the intended narrative. Which means we wasted an entire season on going down this pointless rabbit hole. That's just bad writing.
Imagine a world where the Netflix adaptation actually has Dante, Lady, and the White Rabbit realize they've all been stupidly fighting each other despite the real threat being Mundus, and so they all team up to stop the demon king

what kind/style of endbands do you usually do? they look so good 👀
hi!! sorry for taking a while to answer, I wanted to make sure I could give you my best answer.
I usually do what's called a "double core" endband. I use double core endbands over the "bead on front" method because bead on front style is not great for uneven distributions of color, irregular patterns, or using more than three colors. Functionally it works by having your extra threads wrapped up inside the thread that is showing, forming the smaller secondary core. Ultimately you are doing figure 8s around the main core & then your secondary core of thread. This keeps things pretty neat & tidy. The tutorial I first used was this one by DAS Bookbinding, though I don't think his endband tutorials are his best ones. Another binder I've spoken with endbands about a lot is maleeka, who recently did an endband tutorial herself.
maybe I should do one... but it takes a lot for me to get enough motivation to make videos. I'll take this opportunity to write up some tips I've shared when people ask instead:
1. Endband core material is the MOST IMPORTANT component. You need a core that is stiff but flexible - it should NOT be floppy because it wiggles everywhere under the tension of the thread, but still needs to flex with the opening & closing of the book. You want something that doesn't compress, to reduce tension shifts in thread creating a lumpy endband. Have a smooth core is less critical but helps to avoid snagging threads & allows you some leeway on sliding threads around for adjustments. My personal choice is smooth leather jewelers cord (link is just an example, I get mine from a local craft store).
2. Thread size. All your threads need to be the same size; it will be visible if you are using two different sizes, and mess with your front core. Additionally, I know lots of people will use larger twists of multiple strands of embroidery thread, which can work, but is more likely to compress & alter its size in unexpected ways. A single strand is preferable. If you want something thicker you can find some thread weights that are heavier twists intended to be used in a single strand, not pulled apart. I prefer smaller sizes because it works better for the gradient designs I like.
3. Silk thread is your friend (if you can spend the money on it). It reduces fuzz (no fuzz like you get with cotton/DMC embroidery thread), it's usually easier to manage, has a more compact twist, and a higher shine. I use Japanese silk hand sewing thread in size #9 (9号). There's multiple brands (Tire, Daruma, KNK/kanagawa, etc). Here's a wholesale listing (minimum 20,000¥ for international). A non-Japanese brand is Guterman silk (German brand). Both the Japanese & German threads come in a heavier weight (Japanese is #16, Guterman is buttonhole).
4. Thread tension is the most important part of the actual technique. You need to ensure the threads currently wrapped in the secondary core keep tension when you are working the thread around them.
5. Working on a curve. This is only really relevant if you're doing an endband on a rounded book, but the circumference of the curve means there's more real estate on the outside vs inside of the curve. Sometimes this can cause bunching on the secondary core. My own solution to this is that sometimes I wrap the primary core but drop a wrap here or there around the secondary core (only between two wraps of the same color I'm dropping). I uh... don't know of anyone currently recommending this besides myself so I can't point to any pro endorsement for this method, it's just what works for me. Forgive my terrible writing:

6. Pattern management. I... don't really plan much how my patterns sit on the spine, which is not very helpful. HOWEVER you can do some pattern management on the fly, if you really want your pattern to end at a certain place. Thread can be packed more or less densely on the core, resulting in some pattern compression; you could also strategically drop wraps in less noticeable locations. An unintended example: I was replicating the pattern on this endband (left) when I realize I wasn't packing the thread as densely as I had the first time around (right), which resulted in the overall pattern taking up more space. You can do this on purpose, if you need to.

this was way more than you asked but it gave me a chance to put all this in one spot. Best of luck in vanquishing the dreaded EndWyrms.
#fanbinding#bookbinding#celestial sphere press#in progress review#ask des#i tend to shock ppl a big when i say i don't actually enjoy sewing endbands#i merely Tolerate it#all of this knowledge is 100% spite driven to reduce my own frustration

Devin May Cry Netflix
Look. I've never played Devil May Cry, not a single game. I knew very little going into this show. But man this was a really good and fun show!
All I see is a bunch of negativity coming from the DMC fan base, and look I can accept you wanting an proper adaptation of your video game; but that doesn't mean you have to be an ass hat to this new continuity.
This is a non-canon story, if you want the original DMC then go back and replay the games! Complaining about the story being different in this is like complaining that Sonic 3 isn't the same as Sonic Adventures 2. Its not meant to be exact, its meant to take the characters and ideas and use them in a way to reintroduce them to a newer generation of people.
A Majority of complaints I've see are about Lady being the main character instead of Dante when that's blatantly untrue. God forbid a WOMEN be important to the story. Another complaint I've seen is Dante being weaker then his game counterpart. This Dante wasn't trained to fight by his father like he was in the games; he has no idea how his powers work until the Rabbit explains it to him. He didn't even KNOW he was half demon! Lets allow the character to learn and grow and get stronger thru the series. While Lady has been training and is in a special forces unit for fighting demons. Even though Dante has been fighting demons for a while he has mostly been relying on his extreme healing factor and speed rather than actual technique from what we can really see.
I also see people complaining about backstories. majorly that we don't fully get Dante's full story just the clip notes of it. But you have to realize the creators were only given 8 episodes to tell their story. unfortunately that means cutting things for time and Dante's back story at this point is not the most relevant to the story. We get Rabbit and Lady's back stories because they are relevant to the current plot of the show (Lady's is more so used a mirror to Rabbits). If we are to get another season it would most likely be focused on Dante finding and fighting Vergil where we would most likely get to see the entire back story from both boy's point of views.
People seem to be forgetting that the goal is to get another season to keep exploring these characters. I'm sure that in the first video game Dante isn't the same person he is in the last because he had time to grow. These 8 episodes are introducing us (and Dante) to EVERYTHING. He will (hopefully) grow in future season(s). People are expecting to much from such a short season. Unfortunate as it is this is how streaming services do things, as much as id rather we get 12 episodes or more we are only given 8 and they have to make due with what they have.
And the immigration analogy. So much about this is hated but its because people are only looking at it at face value. Yes, Rabbits plan is WRONG but that doesn't mean everything he stood for was wrong. letting in every demon is a bad idea. Yes. But dose that mean all those innocent Makaian's should be dyeing and suffering to the corrupt and gruesome ruling class of demons? No. I would BET that this idea will be working towards Dante (or maybe Virgil?) becoming the new ruler/king of Makai after defeating King Mundus. Perhaps after kicking out the American invasion and closing the door to hell behind them and sealing it he will be left (maybe with his brothers help) to restructure and try and repair Makai. (pretty sure he and his brother get trapped in hell in the games? could be wrong I've only watched one hour long video about the games so I could be misremembering.) I would expect Dante to grow and change as a character before this were to happen but again that's the point of multiple seasons. The perfectionists solution to immigration isn't to let everyone into another country; its to fix the situation they are coming from.
While no we don't need politics to be part of the show it is not our choice as viewers to make. This is what the Director wanted to go with so it's what we are getting, if you don't like it then don't watch it and just enjoy the games. This isn't the games, and maybe if it was a reimagining of something I cared about and grew up with I'd view it differently but as a new comer to the series I really enjoyed it and will be looking more into the franchise as a whole. This show succeeded in its mission to bring in new people to the fan base, just as the sonic movie did for its franchise.
I really hope we get another season and this isn't just left as a one and done show. Please look at this is in a new lens and not as a connection to the video games. Allow them to tell the story they want to tell. Maybe I'll re-watch the show and have different feelings in the future but after a first watch I really liked it. The animation and soundtrack are spectacular and really nostalgic for me as someone who grew up watching AMV's on YouTube in the 2010's.
I don't normally post my opinions about things online and just keep to myself but this felt important for me to talk about. If anything I've said was wrong or you disagree with any of my statements feel free to let me know, just please don't be a jerk about it, like I said I'm not overly familiar with this franchise and I only watched thru this season once so I could also be misremembering or just have rose tinted glasses from a first viewing. I don't really know how to end this now. byebyyyyyeeeeee <3

Okay, I've experienced enough DMC (games only) to make this post.
Dante is a more tragic character than Vergil.
Vergil witnessing or learning their mom got ganked might've been the notch that turned him onto the path for power. "Without power, you can't protect anyone. Not even yourself."
Like you compare a human baby at 10 weeks and a kitten at 10 weeks, and the kitten clearly has the advantage at everything. Vergil would've done this same style of comparison with humans vs demons cause if he didn't have the weakness of a human child at the time, he probably could've protected his mom from that fate. The demon side is clearly superior from that point of view, so he wants to be rid of the side holding him back.
Yes, he's punished for it. He's brainwashed into a pawn, manipulated by other demons, and loses a fight against his brother multiple times. However what set him off and keeps him going is this internal battle of the self. One that gets multiple faces in DMC5 via V and Urizen. It's an inferiority complex, where his solution for getting rid of said complex is something that will suck everyone else into the worst parts of the world.
Dante on the other hand doesn't blame himself for their mother's tragedy. He utilizes aloofness and the appearance of detachment like Vergil does.
The only difference is where Vergil tries to frame everyone as beneath him, Dante shifts to viewing people as objects to play with. Killing demons is fun. Fighting is fun. It's a party. It's a show. It's an event, and he gets to be the star. Until he remembers he cares. Until he sees people hurting or in danger and steps in anyway. And it's always people who are the first ones to strip him of his humanity.
His help is always hit with rejection first, because they don't look at him as human until he passes their tests. After he passes their tests, he gets to be human in their eyes because he's proved himself useful, but it's never a test that's one and done. No. He has to do this again and again for every. single. person. he tries to save, and he keeps making this choice on purpose.
Vergil's battle is internal. He's suffered, been tortured, and paid for his pride, but he won't move on until he defeats his biggest enemy. Himself.
Dante's battle is external. He can choose compassion every time. He can prove himself and his humanity to every single person he meets one by one. He can even save the world, but he can't change it.

NOT my best work, and it's certainly not really anything that goes anywhere, but silly DMC Vergil and Dante being children fic. (the rest under the cut cause I didn't want a huge piece cluttering my bloggy poo)
“No, Dante!” Vergil twists his body, making sure his back faces Dante as he holds the pot full of a red, pasty looking substance away from himself, not quite sauce yet. “I am the one making it…” He exhales shortly, a very independent worker. He doesn’t have time for his twin’s foolishness… He’ll only compromise the dish!
Dante snickers, leaning against the countertop. “Aw, c’mon, lemme help - it’s technically my kitchen, Vergil.” Vergil narrows his eyes at his brother, setting the pot back onto the stove as he grabs the sauce covered wooden spoon again. “And all you eat is the same pizza from the same parlour everyday… This kitchen is completely untouched.” Dante stares for a moment. “That’s not true. I use the fridge!” He chuckles to himself as Vergil waves a hand dismissively.
The stove is flicked back on, struggling to light as Vergil reads through a written recipe, he seems extra focused on this. Dante raises an eyebrow, it’s spaghetti… How hard is this for Vergil to make? “So, uh, what’s with all the fancy stuff?” Dante asks, pointing at a few spices and herbs scattered across the counter, a packet of ground beef nearby as Vergil reaches for an old, beat up pan that’s seen better days.
“I’m trying to recreate mother’s recipe.” Vergil says flatly, reaching for the beef as he sets the pan on the stove with some oil. “Obviously, we don’t have a recipe for it, so I’m trying to recreate it to the best of my ability…” Dante stares for a moment, rising from his leaning as he throws his hands up. “OH, well, lemme help-” “NO.”
The two stare, both narrowing their eyes as Dante scoffs, chuckling again. “Aw, c’mon, I can help, I remember some of the steps, like, uh-” “No, I’m doing it, Dante. You can watch.” Vergil huffs, throwing in a chopped bit of garlic in with the beef. Dante rolls his eyes, reaching for one of the stalks of basil on the counter, Vergil quickly reacting and swatting his hand. “Stop it! I’m doing it!” Dante quickly swats back at him - huffing shortly. “I’m just tryin’ to help! I know bits of her recipe too, you don’t have to do all the work-” “Back up, Dante!” A kitten fight ensues, slapping, grunting and hair tugging as the two flail around the kitchen like toddlers fighting over some toy.
Nero passes by, stretching as he enters the kitchen, immediately stopping and staring at the two, sighing to himself. “What the Hell are you two doing…?” The twins fuss, Vergil glancing over at Nero as Dante yanks his hair, trying to put him in a hold under his arm. “Ah- Nero.” He quickly shoves Dante to the side, his younger twin bumping into the corner of the counter and wincing, before rubbing his side, waving at Nero. “Hey, kid-” “What’s, uh, going on?”
“I’m trying to recreate our mother’s recipe but someone won’t let me handle it-” “Your dad’s going crazy and refusing to let me help him make some simple spaghetti.” The two chime in together as Nero stares, eyes darting between them as he shakes his head, muttering. “Seriously…? You two really can’t handle making spaghetti together?”
Vergil shakes his head, crossing his arms. “I don’t want to make it together, I want to do it myself - all Dante is going to do is screw it up! I want to do it!” He reiterates… Like a child. VERGIL wants to do it, HE can do it HIMSELF, all BY HIMSELF. Nero shakes his head. “Why doesn’t one of you make the sauce while the other works on noodles? Then you both have something to do-” “NO.”
Dante smirks. “Yeah, see Vergil? Simple solution! Lemme help ya-” “NO.” Vergil’s getting heated about this… He wants to do it himself, his face going a bit red as he stews in his anger about this. He shakes his head, grabbing at the wooden spoon again, waving it at Dante. “Out!” Dante crosses his arms, humming shortly. “Someone’s not too fond of teamwork…” “OUT!”
Nero shakes his head. “You two really gotta act like this, huh? There’s just no end to it.” Vergil grumbles, turning his back to the two, stirring the pot passive aggressively, mumbling “foolish” to himself over and over as Dante slowly approaches, taking a spatula and breaking apart the meat with it. Vergil glances over and immediately goes to say something before Nero shouts back. “He’s helping you, relax.”

*Tippy toes in a not-so-suspicious manner* “Hey god, it’s me again 🧍♂️👁️”

Can you write the DMC men + Sephi with a reader who has long hair like the Victorian ladies back then?

She takes very good care of her hair like massaging her scalp to stimulate blood flow, washes her hair carefully, oiling the ends and occasionally trimming it, hair serums, etc
And the reason is that when she was young with her mother, she complimented how beautiful and lovely her hair must be when she gets older and how long it’ll be. That imprinted in her mind and in order to pay homage to her mother, who now had passed away tragically due to a devil-attacking incident, it’s also a way to remember her as sometimes when she looks into the mirror, she would always see her mom in herself mainly due to her long hair and how she looks almost like a carbon copy of her mother
But it can be a hassle, taking care of it due to how long it is and how much time to care for it. In some fights, her hair would get caught up in something or a demon trying to grip her hair, resulting in her almost getting caught several times no matter how much she tied her hair up
She knows she needs to cut it because it can be a life or death situation, but she’s also really reluctant because other than her hair, she doesn’t have anything that can physically remind her of her dead mom
Ok, please enjoy!
DMC boys + Sephiroth x Reader with very long hair headcannons
¤ Dante ¤
-Dante thinks your hair is very beautiful and has laid his grubby hands on it more than once, though he only did this without your permission one time.
-He doesn't really care how you maintain your hair because he is a dude who doesn't understand haircare, but he is interested in all the shiny tonics you have.
-He watched you perform your haircare routine once, and only managed to get through half of it. How anyone has the patience to do all that is beyond him.
-When he heard why you want to keep your hair so long, his heart really reached out to you. He missed his mom too, so he knows what that yearning feels like.
-He doesn't want you to feel like you have to cut your hair, but it's getting in the way of your missions, and if you don't find a way to keep it tied up and out of the way, it will put you at risk.
-He finally came up with a solution, and that solution was to tie your hair up with regular hair ties, then wrap it in nylon cord to keep it from coming undone. While it looks ugly, it's functional and doesn't really damage your hair.
■ Vergil ■
-Vergil thought your extremely long hair was rather impractical, but said nothing.
-Your cabinet full of hair supplies was annoying, but Vergil kept his mouth shut.
-The mounds of hair you leave on the floor was absolutely infuriating, but Vergil kept these thoughts to himself.
-Your reasons for keeping your hair so long resonated within him, because he knew what it was like to miss your mother that badly. If he was born a girl, he would have done the same.
-He understood you were saddened about having to cut your hair, but if you didn't, you would be at risk during missions.
-He assured you that even if you cut your hair, you still looked a lot like your mother, and that you don't need hair to keep her memory alive. She was in your heart, and always would be.
-Besides, you didn't even get it cut that much, just up to your hips, so not much had changed.
□ Nero □
-Nero thought your hair was really nice, and really wanted to touch it.
-How you took care of it was a mystery, and while you did offer to show him, he declined since he wasn't really interested.
-You do make a mess; hair accumulates on nearly every surface, specifically the bed and couch.
-Being someone who never knew his mom, Nero understands why you are so adamant on retaining your hair.
-He didn't want you to cut it either, but this was a matter of practicality and safety. You should, or you risk getting injured because demons will use it as leverage.
-With a lot of help from Nico, Nero managed to get you a specially engineered hair tie that keeps your hair secure and free of damage while you fight. Hooray, now you don't need to cut it!
● V ●
-V thought your hair was very beautiful, silky smooth, and impossibly shiny.
-He wanted so badly to touch it, but knew better than to, because in doing so, he might make it dirty.
-Watched you perform your hair routine and was dazzled by the sheer amount of stuff you do with it, and how long it takes.
-He wanted to help you, but had no idea what he was doing and didn't want to ruin your hair, so he resigned himself to just watching.
-He knew you didn't want to cut your hair because you cherished the fact that you looked like your mother. He didn't want you to cut your hair either, he thought it was very beautiful.
-But perhaps you could compromise and just trim it to your waist? That way it would still be very long, but easier to manage.
♡ Sephiroth ♡
-Now, Sephiroth is different from the rest of these chumps.
-He understands haircare and takes it more seriously than young women on TikTok.
-He helps you through everything you need to do, even sharing some of his own tips.
-Visitors think you live with Bigfoot given the amount of hair littering your floors and other surfaces.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love how the netflix DMC anime has sparked a renewed interest in the series, but I'm not going to lie to you and say I don't momentarily lose my fucking mind whenever someone refers to Dante as 'Dante Sparda'. It just makes me think of the whole 'Luigi Mario' line from the 90s Super Mario Bros. Movie.
As for the solution, let me be completely inane and answer that with a question - What is Thor's full name?

There will be no kind words about the Netflix DMC series in this post. You have been warned

Well, expectations, of course, were not very high anyway, because Netflix did it, but there was hope. Was.
The first and second series still look like DMC, but what's next? It's a purely American thing. Yes, the games are also based on Western culture, but it is not the basis, but just an ideal decoration. In the series, America is the foundation. This "joke-parallel" with "not Hell, but Makai". Okay, guys, we understand that you're trying to atone for your sins. But what does DMC have to do with this? It was incredibly unpleasant to be told that there are good demons and there are bad demons. Tell little Virgil about it.
And how were the iconic moments distributed to everyone? Trish's death in Dante's arms went to Enzo, the double shooting with Dante went to the Lady, and the fall down went to the crazy Rabbit. Bravo!
And the awakening Dante's DT without being pierced by a Rebellion? I really believed it would happen, but oh well.
Lady without the scar? Was it really impossible to get it at that moment when her father attacked her? By the way, did you know that Mary's last name is not Arkham, but Sue?
Bosses from 3, 4 and 5 are an extremely strange solution. That is, Cavaliere will be transferred identically to the game, but we will make the form of Nelo Angelo new. Okay💀(And the fact that they're in terrible 3D, I guess I'll keep quiet).

I'm afraid to imagine what they will do to Vergil's character and MOTIVATION, given what we're dealing with Dante.
And this hellish mess of everything? Here we have DMC3 character, there is a hint of DMC2, here are 4 and 5 bosses, here is a character from the manga, here is a reference to the Resident, and here we have a DMC4 villain, and heeere is generally the idea of a reboot. This is, of course, fun at first, but then it's not funny anymore.
You can, of course, explain this by saying that it's just another universe, like Sonic the movies, but no. Just no. That's not how it works.
And my personal taste: DMC is not about blood and swearing. In all games, the only moments with blood were when Dante was made into a shish-kebab and when the Father of the year came to his son (Yes, there was blood in other moments, but you wouldn't even notice it). And swearing? I'm not even sure if he was there at all, just a couple of, well, weak swear words. Is this Hotel Hazbin2.0. or is it DMC?
In general, it was interesting, but it left so much anger and sadness that no amount of rock and graphics will fix it.
(I haven't said everything yet)

Vicariously learning about Netflix DMC from people talking about it, because it does not seem like a piece of media that I would enjoy experiencing first hand.
I've heard from multiple sources about the kinds of changes in this Alternate Universe that suggest it made similar choices to DMC: Devil May Cry in tampering with the magic and worldbuilding. Kindof a red flag for the direction it's headed. The magic system of Devil May Cry is core to its world and themes. Ripping that out and replacing it with science quantum quantum explanations and making most of the demon population humans-but-not makes it a fundamentally different type of conflict, and should make the psychology of the main characters different (and if it doesn't, that's not really much better since it makes them messy in taking actions inconsistent with motivation). So if it's a choice between two different potentials which would both make the characters fundamentally different people disguised with the aesthetic of the familiar characters...it's not for me.
But really the magic thing is bothering me (because I like to dissect magic systems and their consequences)...
...like do the showrunners have the self-awareness to know that they're just swapping out pseudo-psychology for pseudo-science? Do they understand the repercussions on the message being conveyed? I still don't think that I'm particularly likely to watch the series, but a few possible points of conflict come to mind based on the general picture I've gotten so far:
Undermines the original themes of Devil May Cry, which is about fighting and rejecting pseudo-psychology and other forms of religious magical-thinking. It's a whimsical interpretation of existentialism/absurdism - rejecting the absurd by shooting it to death with bullets.
Turns a story about humans coping with their personal "inner demons" - which have manifested in physical form in various ways - into a story about how scientific innovation facilitates a disproportionately violent response towards a perceived external threat. So instead of being based on humans coping with the absurd complexes generated by millennia of religious baggage, it's about what, technological inequality? Half-demons who are inherently more quantum quantum are also inherently more prone to being governed by emotions?
People want to be addressing their inner demons and work on self-improvement - this is good. People be going on a paranoia-driven rampage of projecting personal fears and hysteria onto other sentient beings - this is bad. If the surreal inner demons are now sci-fantasy outer demons with complex and sympathetic thoughts and feelings...this is a different story with different stakes and requiring different solutions. What are you doing.
I dunno, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's actually kindof cowardly that the Netflix DMC won't confront the religious connotations of DEVIL May Cry in favor of it's science-y thing. Devil May Cry (2001) exists in the context of the JRPG tradition of "attack and kill God".....by all accounts that I've heard, Netflix DMC is too ignorant and/or too immature to execute on the existentialist themes of the original series. Belief in literal demons, The Devil, and a mythic war between good and evil is still a part of many present day religious practices - this is not some quaint and harmless obsolete belief system. It affects present day politics. By refusing to acknowledge religious magical thinking as a root cause of the conflict between irrational (emotion based) and rational (logic based) decisions I do not see how the Netflix series can be capable of more than superficial resemblance to the existing body of work of Devil May Cry.
...I guess it's good that people are getting interested from the show and picking up the games though? That's nice.
#devil may cry#Netflix DMC#existentialism#do I need to watch the thing to have these opinions because I don't want to give them money#I mostly wanted to excise these thoughts from the other - uh - 2 posts now sitting in my drafts analyzing original DMC#media analysis#lite

Hello there, gentle readers! Welcome to another chapter of my Radiobelle fanfic. Charlie has finally acknowledge her secret desires for her ever reliable friend slash business partner. But as Alastor attempts to take more than what is freely given, he will soon find out that the princess of hell is not truly his. I know it sounds complicated that is why I choose this title, and yes it’s from another Devil May Cry soundtrack, from DMC 5 to be more specific. Belonging to someone else while the right one comes along usually is a complicated situation with a not so simple solution. So without further ado, please enjoy the story.

My youtube rant script for netflix dmc keeps getting longer and I'm struggling to editing it because there are so many points inter connected...
I may need to color code or something so I don't repeat myself in my verbosity. And organize it better in general. I jump around too much. but I also work myself up about it because there are so many easy solutions to making the show more coherent.
