a couple of guys have been throwing around doc being ace in the tags of my recent post so naturally. i have thoughts. allow me to subject you to them:

i agree. that man is asexual. clara is also asexual. i would think both of them are a little bit bi as well!

not that either of them think too hard about it though. if you ask them they would say they are 100% attracted to the opposite sex and for the most part that's true. but doc totally had some sort of vaguely homosexual rivalry with another scientist while working on the manhattan project and clara probably had a crush on another girl when she was little. also the 1980s has a lot more Gender than the century previous so once the shock of women wearing pants wears off she's going to be like hold on a sec.... they're kinda cooking in this century

(clara would not use those words in that order fs but that's the only way i can convey that lmao)

none of them would look into those experiences. they'd just assume oh every girl thought this one specific other girl was like super pretty and smart and cool growing up. every scientist has an infuriatingly stubborn yet brilliant and objectively good-looking rival in the same department. that's just how it is!

doc and clara are more the "enjoy each other's company" couple than anything like sure they'll kiss or whatever and that's nice but they'll have infinitely more fun talking about their interests

they'd probably only get schnasty because they know that's just what couples are meant to do. like they'll try it once and they'll agree it was a solid 7/10 experience but do you know what's a guaranteed 10/10 every time? 49th reread of journey to the centre of the earth!! woohoo!!

which brings me. to the real point of this post. where did jules and verne come from.

as an ace doclara truther i initially subscribed to the "they travelled in time to adopt a couple of orphans who were otherwise going to die and be lost to time" bc it's cute and it's like how doc saved clara so now they're in love. but the more i thought about it i was like hold on. something's up here

because doc spent 10 years building that train so the first thing he'd want to do with it (besides going into the future to get parts for it to fly) is return to let marty know he's alright right. like in the movie sure he picked up einie first but that's bc that's einie

so unless those boys are freshly picked up off the great depression streets logically i do not think that can be the case. as nice as this headcanon is

so my next thought was like ok. we can still make this adoption thing work. maybe these orphans have naturally occurred in the 1880s (<- certainly one of the string of words i have made)

but we know doc. sure he's had his moments of flipping the bird to the space-time continuum but in general he tries his best to keep it intact i think

taking up a blacksmithing job? minor improvements to the lives of the citizens of hill valley. probably not going to cause anything major. also he needs money. marrying a schoolteacher? she was going to fall off a cliff and die originally so it's not like that's going to make anything worse. (although now a lot more kids are literate in this timeline so something is definitely different. but also what is she gonna do, not teach?)

but adopting two kids without knowing their fates beforehand.... risky business. who knows who those two are supposed to be. and it's not like they can pick up two kids who they know for sure would probably pass without their intervention bc doc is a doc from the future but he's not THAT kind of doc from the future.

so with that said. begrudgingly. i think jules and verne are biologically theirs. unfortunate for the adoption headcanons but that's the only logical way i can see it

not to say the adoption headcanons are wrong and bad i just don't know how they could obtain two children without worrying about messing things up. so if anyone has any ideas how please enlighten me

clara oswald was mostly boring as a character (sorry jenna you’re adorable and a wonderful actress given the most boring plot to save your life) EXCEPT when the impossible girl plot was over and she and the doctor got weird and toxic and codependent. that shit was interesting because it showed a mutual understanding of they were hurting one another and themselves but they kept doing it. “do you think i care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference” thank you for the first interesting unique doctor/companion dynamic since end of rtd

Some more Doclara things because inundating the fandom is my self-imposed job on this blog aside from RP:

Spontaneous dancing is a thing that happens. Especially bc Emmett is a hopeless romantic, and especially when he’s not really doing anything else at the time. Hi. I’m bored. Dance with me. I love you.

She’ll turn the tables on him sometimes though when her husband’s gone a bit too deep into Hyperfocus Mode while in the lab. Just a slow waltz until she can tell his eyes are no longer focused about 9 dimensions away from Earth. Welcome back. You’ve been in here for 12 hours do you want to try and take a break and eat something? He’ll give her a twirl and wait a couple minutes before responding, just dancing.

They’ll also do going to dances things because when you have access to all of time and space, you can find some pretty dang classy places for dates. They keep picking up new styles and can actually really kill it together out there.

Clara also learned to speak French long ago because they’re both the steampunk equivalent of a weeabo. She’s actually a lot better at it than Emmett.

They practice speaking it with each other for several months before taking a trip to 19th-century France to be able to meet a certain author. They’re both sort of intensely awkward and overexcited and starstruck and jabbering on about how his work was an inspiration and how it was part of the reason they got married and thank you sir you don’t know how much of an honor it is! Jules Verne never actually forgets the impression of these two highly peculiar fans, and the experience of putting a signature into that many books at once, some of which he’s pretty sure he did not actually write yet.

Meanwhile they’re just geeking out about it for months. Like oh my God that actually happened we actually got to do that.

They have a few other squee-worthy trips in time which I can’t really think of the details rn aside from there’s a lot of meeting scientists and astronomers and maybe the far future when space travel is a lot less of a big deal.

Then there’s antigravity dancing

Anyway my point is even after 10 years they’re still enormous dorks it’s their dynamic.

...So Clara going back to teaching in the future is all well and good but like... Clara going to college in the future because she’s a bright thing and deserves to know and do more in the world than what the 19th century would allow to her, namely teaching.

Emmett is very very proud and delighted to tutor her.

He’s been doing that for a while, actually, in a way. She likes questions and he likes talking about science.

They are definitely and very frequently highly embarrassing to their children. They are happy, and don’t really care. The boys eventually grow into an amused-eyeroll-type reaction at their dorky antics.

I’ve never really thought about this and I’m incapable of ever coming up with angst ESPECIALLY for them so my apologies if you’re looking 4 that buuuut….

Doc would be in the closet trying to turn back, silently freaking out cause he failed to tell clara about this (wether or not it’s a recent development). Once the cats, or the werewolf, in this case, is out of the bag clara is kind of speechless with a sort of disbelief that’s almost comical? If that makes sense? Doc is probably like “im sorry I never wanted you to see this part of me oh im so embarrassed!!!” And Clara’s like “OH MY STARS IT REALLY IS YOU!!!” and she’d just start and start and start asking questions.

if the werewolf thing is recent she’s just asking about how it happened and if he’s okay. If this is happen that’s like genetic like teen wolf or something she’s hurt she wasn’t trusted with it and kinda gets angry but it’s mostly just the hurt shining through

@madscientists1mp the people want their yaoi i guess. which is all fine and dandy, i too enjoy men kissing, but like. surely even within the limits of this fandom there's gotta be some other options out there right LMAO. if you filter out the ship tag there's a lot of really good stuff on ao3, although not a lot of it is for the doclara enjoyers specifically, alas.

@straydogofhv re: the block tags thing, there is! but like you gotta keep doing it every time you search things when you freshly open ao3, so it's not a blocked one-and-done deal, unfortunately. on the filters list there's an option to exclude tags, in the relationship section of that you can select not to see it and hit filter! (iirc, you might not be able to find that option if you've searched the fandom through the search bar, you'd probably need to click the fandom tag itself for the full filter list). also yeah i took a look at the trans marty tag unfiltered and oh my god what are they doing to him

funny enough i have a fic rec that knocks out what both of you guys are looking for in one! it's pretty popular, so one of you may have already read it, but in another life by kathkin has both trans marty and a good amount of doclara! it's a role-reversal of clara and marty and it's really good. i read it before i rewatched the third movie so i've been planning on giving it a reread so the pictures in my head can be more accurate to the film hahaha

looking for fics be so fine like yes. premise is interesting. word count is lengthy. vibing with the prose on the blurb. and then you spot the glaring doc/marty tag on the top and it's like oh never mind. abort mission ig.
