Sometimes the topic of how Pinkie (Panko) introduced all of us to Arknights during it's second year rises and we all look back at the things we could have missed if they didn't so carefully cater to all of our likes. It feels like we were sucked into the void. Or we flied into a glue trap.

Either case, we are very happy to be a part of this.

KDrama Year in Review 2023

While I watched more KDramas this year than CDramas, none of them consumed my heart and soul quite like this year's crop of CDramas did (CDrama review post here). And I dropped KDramas more readily than I have in years past, in part because there were so many more things to watch than I had time for (also I had to finish my dissertation and graduate, etc etc). Still, there were definitely some that I really, really enjoyed, so here's this year's KDrama round up:

16. My Lovely Liar: Started strong, got boring real quick. Dropped for homophobic murder plot. Still, glad to see that Hwang Min Hyn can actually act (although full disclosure, I did still enjoy him in Alchemy of Souls, wooden as that performance may be). Hoping Kim So Hyun can catch a break and get a role in a drama more worthy of her in the near future.

15. Crash Course in Romance: Excellent performances and chemistry by the ML and FL. Romance between two middle aged people instead of youths is also a treat. Dropped around ep 12 because of the unnecessary, homophobic murder plot. Pass.

14. A Good Day to Be a Dog: Surprisingly stronger than the goofy premise suggests, largely on the basis of Park Gyu-Young's performance as the FL who turns into a dog upon being kissed. Pacing problems in the third act around the origins of the whole dog curse thing. Can't say I recommend unless you're really in the mood for some shenanigans, but largely inoffensive if a little silly. (Also it turns out Cha Eun Woo *really* leveled up his kiss game for this one!)

13. Love to Hate You: Perfectly serviceable rom com. Nothing too special, but a nice weekend binge if you're in the mood for that. Also a good way to see Kim Ji-Hoon's v handsome face and that *hair* without having to deal with everything involved with his rather murderous run in Flower of Evil.

12. Joseon Attorney: A Morality: Perfectly serviceable law procedural/Joseon historical. If you don't like either of those genres your mileage may vary, but I had missed having Bona on my screen, so it worked well enough for me.

11. Welcome to Samdal-ri: I seem to like this one more than literally everyone else I know, and I fully admit that my enjoyment of this drama is more vibes-based than plot-based. I guess I have a soft spot for Shin Hye Sun yelling at people at Ji Chang Wook going a bit unhinged over a woman who ran away from him (see also: Lovestruck in the City).

10. My Demon: Very much enjoying Song Kang as a cranky demon falling in love with a human. Very tropey in the best way, and feels like a return to form for the supernatural romance genre. Remains to be seen if they'll land the ending as of this writing, but enjoying as it goes.

9. Doctor Cha: A contribution to the slate of divorce comedies I watched this year (see also: Strangers Again (KDrama) and Let's Get Divorced (JDrama)), a surprisingly touching story about growing older when you've devoted your life to someone who has not done the same for you.

8. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow (Part 2): While Ko Joon-Yung never quite managed to replace Jung So-Min as the FL for me, I definitely still enjoyed the closer to this fun fantasy series. Special shout out to Shin Seung-Ho as Prince Go Won and his pet turtle

7. Strangers Again: I didn't see a ton about this one on tumblr as it was airing, but I found this rom com? melodrama? divorce procedural? makjang? story about relationships and why they end unexpectedly profound. I tuned in expecting mindless makjang hot mess, and instead got a thoughtful meditation on divorce. Left me feeling unexpectedly melancholy at the end, but glad I watched it.

6. The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Very fun sageuk! Probably won't knock your socks off, but it does what it does very well. Bonus points for a B couple as compelling as the A couple. I've also been a big Kang Hoon fan since Little Women, and there are a couple of other actors in here that I'm always glad to see working.

5. Perfect Marriage Revenge: Tour de force makjang. Came out of nowhere and blew me away. Hits all the right beats, and unexpectedly fun (and was a nice break from the heaviness of My Dearest for me). This was a good year for jaded and slightly unhinged transmigrated FL's back for their #revenge (see also: Story of Kunning Palace in CDrama land), and I was here for it. Also features one of the spiciest make-out scenes of the year, 10/10 recommend

4. See You in My 19th Life: Absolutely loved this haunting, melancholy, and sometimes unexpectedly goofy reincarnation drama. I loved the webtoon and had high expectations, and this drama largely met them! The continuing relationship between sisters Ji-Eum (Shin Hye Sun) and Cho-Won (Ha Yoon Kyung) was a special highlight for me, and while Shin Hye Sun is already a never-miss for me, I'm especially looking forward to whatever Ha Yoon Kyung does next. I prefer the ending of the Webtoon to the KDrama, but I'm still delighted this drama exists and am glad I watched it.

3. The Interest of Love: Look, I loved this drama. Even though it seemed on the surface like nothing but *mess* in the interpersonal lives of these characters working at a bank on the border between a rich and poor neighborhood in Seoul, it nonetheless had some of the most searing class commentary of the year for me. I also love an FL who will (spoiler) pack up her things and disappear at the drop of a hat, even if no one else will understand her decision to do so, because she just cannot deal anymore (see also: the FL in Lovestruck in the City, whom I also love but everyone else hated). This drama kept me gleefully coming back every week in a year where not a lot of others did.

2. Call It Love: A revenge slice of life melodrama that I found unexpectedly touching in its deep melancholy. Loved not only the main couple, but the relationship between the siblings and their pharmacist bestie. A lovely character study. (Also I somehow ended up watching this at the same time as Till the End of the Moon and Li Susu as Ye Xiwu's hidden identity/revenge plot, which was unexpectedly stressful! Had a very "it's the same picture" moment despite two dramas in two genres that could not be further apart.) If you missed this one (and since it aired on Disney+, you might have--Disney+'s effects on the KDrama streaming ecosystem will be the death of me), it's worth seeking out!

1. My Dearest (Parts 1 and 2): Kind of feels like everyone has said everything there is to say about sageuk of truly epic proportions, but it blew me away as well. Epic romance? Check. Twisty political machinations? Check. Heartwarming friendships between women? Check. Strong ensemble cast? And my top FL of the year, Lady Gil-Chae, played to perfection by Ahn Eun-Jin. I've adored her since Hospital Playlist, and am delighted that she's getting the attention and the roles she deserves. Namkoong Min also a top contender for ML of the year as Lee Jang-Hyun. Part 2 dragged for me a bit in places after a nearly perfect Part 1, but such a great drama overall.

Favorite Drama of the Year: My Dearest. See above.

Favorite Female Character: I mean, it's gotta be Gil Chae from My Dearest, right? She starts out as such a spiteful, spoiled noblewoman, and then turns out to have a core of pure steel. Turns out all her conniving and strategizing, which went towards causing mischief in the village, really just needed a proper outlet. While I would never want to be in the circumstances in which she found herself, if I did, she's exactly who I would want on my side.

Favorite Male Character: Everything's coming up My Dearest this year, because this one is Lee Jang-Hyun in My Dearest as well. Checks the box for my competence kink, and has a knack for showing up just when Gil-Chae needs him, even at great personal cost. Also a smart-ass, which I probably like a bit too much in a man.

Favorite Secondary Female Character: Cho-Won from See You in My 19th Life. Her relationship with her reincarnated older sister was almost more compelling to me than the main romance sometimes, and really helped develop how the ties that bind us are not just romantic ones. Also she was just super cute

Favorite Secondary Male Character: Could have picked anyone from Team Himbo in Alchemy of Souls, but gonna have to give this one to Go Won, himbo prince of my heart

Favorite Ship: Again, it's gotta be Gil-Chae and Lee Jang-Hyun in My Dearest. Sometimes, there are drama couples that nearly cause me pain when they are apart, and these two quickly became one of them. Though their relationships is hardly functional for much of it, through all that push and pull, they ultimately learn how to show up for each other. Also, their *chemistry* is insane!

Favorite Secondary Ship: I loved Hye-Seong and Sung Joon, the B couple in Call it Love. Seeing the SFL grow more comfortable with herself after a truly shitty ending to her previous relationship was a nice respite from the hidden identity stress of the A couple in this one. I'm also a sucker for a good romance where you start to see someone you've long taken for granted differently. (Close Runner Up: Cho Won and Do-Yun in See You in My 19th Life)

Favorite Platonic Relationship: Gil-Chae, Eun-Ae, and their maids, Jong Jong and Bong Doo, in My Dearest. I loved loved loved the relationship between these women in this drama, and part of the reason the second half of the drama suffered a bit for me is because of how far it moved away from this core relationship. They were ride or die for each other more than the majority of the men in their lives, and I loved that for them.

Trope that Needs to Die: While I find murder plots in rom coms tedious at the best of times, homophobic murder plots are really not it. Quit it, y'all. It's not cute.

Dramas I Missed: Moon in the Day, The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, and Tell Me That You Love Me (grrr Disney+ on this one) are on the list for next year. I'm probably missing others.

Non-2023 Drama Spotlight: Finally went back and watched Do You Like Brahms? for a hit of Park Eun-Bin. A lovely, if also melancholy, slice of life romance that's just as much about what to do when a (career related) dream that you've worked really, really hard for just isn't going to come through as it is about the main romance. Also made me fall in love with Kim Min-Jae and his lovely deep voice, enough so that I also then went back and finally watched Dali and the Cocky Prince, which was also a treat. Recommend both.

Most Looking Forward To: I continue to yearn for a Yumi's Cells 3, and who's to say if that one will ever come through, but I'm putting it out into the universe anyway. More realistically, I'm looking forward to the surprisingly stacked line-up of sageuks coming up, including Captivating the King and Love Song for Illusion.

Mad Dog Whump List

Mad Dog is a 2017 investigation, mystery, action, drama from Korea. It follows a group of insurance fraud investigators and a loveable conman. They set out to find the truth about a plane crash that took the lives of the wife and son of the team leader as well as the co-piolet brother of the conman who was accused of taking down the plane in an act of suicide. Found family shenanigans happen along the way and the drama has some fun twists along the way.

Originally, the only action during the sports events held at Rhodes Island’s event center was, well, the sports - Matoimaru’s soccer matches, Cuora’s baseball games, and the occasional competitions held by the Doctor for morale. However, since Durin brought her fellow Durin Myrtle home, she’d taken it upon herself to keep energy up with a few other high-spirited and mischievous Operators with a “pep squad” who went around doing mascot stunts, messing with audience members, and even doing cheer routines by splitting into two groups and each picking a side to root for, inevitably leading to sabotage between routines and “brawls” on the sidelines. It was amazing entertainment for those who didn’t enjoy sports, and it helped keep numbers up so the Doctor could justify to their sponsors keeping the game fields in good condition.

All that to explain why the Doctor was sitting with Durin watching a soccer game, cheering loudly as Myrtle’s group began their halftime shenanigans. “I really should thank you more often,” the Doctor beamed, handing Drowsy Dwarf herself a large container of popcorn.

“You’re welcome,” she smiled before downing the entire tub not too long after a few test scoops. “She’s so...peppy. It makes me tired looking at her.”

“Never change, Durin. Never change.” He gave her a couple pats on her shoulder and went back to watching the field in earnest.

The next day, Myrtle popped into the Doctor’s office. “Hey, Doctor. I’m here to hang out, if you don’t mind.”

“Mind? You? Never.” He gestured to the couch and empty desk in his office. “If you want to stick around, there’s plenty of space for you.”

“Great!” She bounced onto the couch, hands in her lap as if she was waiting for something to happen.

After a few minutes of watching her fidget and bounce on her couch, the Doctor clicked off his monitor and turned to face her. “You’ve got something on your mind, Myrtle. Lay it on me.”

“Oh! Yeah, I guess I do.” She gave him a serious look, the most serious he’d ever seen her. “Doctor, I need you to do me a favor.”

“Sure, whatever you need.”

Myrtle spun her golden apple by its string. “I need you to get people to stop thinking of me as a little kid. I’m a fully-grown adult - even tall by Durin standards! - and as much as I like the candy, it’s annoying that they’re always trying to pat my head and tell me to behave.”

“Wow...They really do that?” He smiled and shook his head. “I’ll put it on the bulletin, and if it keeps happening, tell me so I can do something more drastic.”

“Thanks!...You believed me really quickly. I appreciate that.”

The Doctor shrugged. “Why wouldn’t I? I know Durin aren’t as tall as some of the other races, but that doesn’t mean you’re any less of an adult.”

“I know, right?” She fell back onto the couch. “Finally, someone gets it!”

“Well, I spent a lot of time with Durin before you showed up. She was my assistant for awhile, actually.”

Myrtle chuckled. “That lazybones. She didn’t even come up with a cool name for herself, Doctor; what did she do as your assistant?”

“W-well...” He blushed. “I’ll admit, she didn’t do a lot of work. I just liked having her around.”

“Why isn’t she your assistant anymore?”

The Doctor sighed. “Too many interruptions. As we got more people, we had more interruptions, which meant she couldn’t sleep as much at the desk, so she quit. Been thinking about getting a replacement just so I’m less lonely in here.”

“Huh...I could do that.” Myrtle was now using her apple as a yo-yo. “I’m great at making people feel not-lonely!”

“That you are, that you are...You busy today?”

She shook her head. “Nope!”

“Well, then you start today.” He glanced at the clock. “We’ll eat lunch around noonish, so in the meantime...Just be you, I guess.”

“That’s it? You don’t have anything you want me to do? I mean, sure, Durin’s a napper, but I’d like to help you out, you know?”

The Doctor thought for a moment before shaking his head. “Maybe when we’ve gotten to know each other better.”

“Okey-dokey, Doctor.” Myrtle reclined on the couch. “...I think I’m gonna try taking a nap for once.”

“Huh. Well, have some good dreams for the both of us, kay?”

She laughed. “Will do!” And, not long thereafter, she was out like a light.

A few weeks later, and it was getting late. The work was practically non-existent; despite what he’d said about being busier, in reality, all he did was Human Resources and battlefield-level strategy, so it was only when other Operators had new complaints that he got to work proper...and so far, today was shaping up to be a rather unproductive one, if it weren’t for Myrtle being in the office to keep him company.

“-And then one of the Reunion guys with the crossbows popped a shot off at Hoshi, but the way her shield was spinning, it went flying off to the side, right into the goon Ch’en was fighting, and the guy just backed up and charged the guy he thought had shot him. We would’ve signed him on if he hadn’t gone back to dueling Ch’en after he was finished.”

“Wow.” She shook her head. “That’s crazy! And so was that guy, by the sound of it.”

The Doctor shrugged. “Well, not every Infected person has it as easy as me or, say, Schwarz. A lot of us end up with serious emotional, mental, or physical impediments. There’s a good chance that guy was driven to madness by his Infection.”

“Oh...I’m glad Durin and I aren’t infected, then.”

“Me, too,” he agreed. “Someone so cute shouldn’t- I mean-”

But it was too late. Myrtle looked at him from her perch on top of the couch, practicing her balance. “Did you just call me cute?”

“I did, but I didn’t mean, like, like a kid kind of cute, if that makes sense?”

“Uh-huh.” She shook her head. “Ah well, at least you said something now-”

He pounded his fist in the desk hard enough for her to jump. “I really didn’t! It’s just that I really like short girls.”

“...Eh?”

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have gotten mad like that.” The Doctor sighed. “It’s just so hard to explain that to some of the others, you know? They used to joke about me being Durin’s dad because we were together so often, and I cannot tell you how hard it got to keep myself under control. The teasing stopped when she got sick of waking up in the middle of her naps, so they didn’t see us together so often, but even at the baseball game yesterday, someone made a snarky comment. I just...anyway, it’s not your fault. All this started before you got here, anyway.”

Myrtle was quiet for a moment, watching him stare at his blank computer screen and absentmindedly twirl the mouse around, before smiling. “So you meant that like when people complain on TV shows about someone being ‘too young’ or ‘too beautiful to die,’ then?”

“I guess.”

“Huh.” She chuckled. “That’s kind of adorable, Doctor.”

He glanced back at her. “Thanks.”

“Aww, don’t be so grumpy. I mean it. It’s nice to hear that the Big Folk don’t all see us the same way.”

“Yeah...” The Doctor pushed back on his desk, launching himself backwards into the wall behind him. “It’s late enough to call it. I’m thinking of heading out early today.”

She frowned. “Are you sure? I thought this talk was going somewhere.”

“Going somewhere?...I don’t follow.”

“Well, you just said you think I’m cute,” Myrtle began explaining, swinging her legs on the couch, “and I wanna see what’s under that mask, so I was hoping you could come over here and show me.”

“Are you serious?” Myrtle rolled her eyes with a laugh. “Do I just need to say it or what?”

“Please use words,” the Doctor replied, his hand tracing the faint trace of gloss on his cheek.

She sighed, shaking her head as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Maybe Durin was right about carrying a megaphone so you Big People would hear me better. You have a thing for short girls, I’m a Durin who likes the idea of having a big strong man to bring home to Dad...are you following now?”

“I didn’t know the last part,” he mumbled, returning the embrace. “So you’re saying-”

“I’m saying that we can make it veeeery clear to the other Operators that I’m not your kid, is all.” She let go of his neck to hold his face with her hands, hoping that by looking him in the eyes he’d get the message fully.

Luckily for everyone involved, that was enough. “I wonder if anyone else here has thought about having their girlfriend work in their office.”

While I wish there were a few more dynamics among the party outside of certain pairs I do love what there is and down for more.

I’d be interested in seeing more Jade and Rab grandfather adopted granddaughter moments. Could be something during the journey or something before they joined the party. Or something after it’s all over. Jade can return to her father in Heliodor but that’s a bond that won’t break.

Any kind of sister time for Serena and Veronica at any time. Can go angsty given Veronica’s situation as well.

I didn’t give Dave a lot of attention until playing the definitive edition and I loved how he was there for Sylv and was able to snap him out of his gloom. More interactions and them supporting each other would be great. Anything during the parade gathering is also great, or Dave’s search for him and Sylv’s recovery.

I love Hendrik and Sylvando’s dynamic. They have that shared history but they’re so different and Hendrik’s reactions are always a joy. But what are some other ways they can support each other?

Game did Jade dirty. Let her shine. Maybe overly ambitious but an AU where she kicks Booga’s ass and liberates Octagonia herself would be cool and she can look after it in a similar fashion to the Last Bastion. But overall anyway, just some attention for Jade.

Just. Sylvando. I love him. Sylv being Sylv can’t go wrong.

There’s also an interesting connection between Elizant II and Leif I’d be interested in seeing more. Leif’s out of time but holds memories of Elizant I. Elizant II is a more direct connection he’s otherwise lacking and it’s nice to see how his opinion of her shifts and grows.

Professor Honeycomb and Doctor H.B.: older cranky lady bees in science! I have no specific ideas, but exploring more of their rivalry would be fun. Hawk and long-suffering Crow involvement are A-okay too.

Celes: Her thoughts on having to sing at the opera? Or what she might be doing post-game. More exploration of her thoughts and feelings after she wakes up on the island? So much room for more expansion on Celes moments. Travelling with Sabin after finding him in the World of Ruin?

Relm: Lean on the magic of her paintings? Or post-game Relm dealing with the loss her powers and/or just trying to live normally again after all that?

The Korean War Atrocities No One Wants to Talk About

June 25th was the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Hundreds of thousands of American soldiers fought bravely in that war, and almost 37,000 were killed. But the media is ignoring perhaps the war’s most important lesson: the U.S. government has almost unlimited sway to hide its own war crimes.  

During the Korean War, Americans were deluged with official pronouncements about how the U.S. military was taking all possible steps to protect innocent civilians. Because the evils of communism were self-evident, few questions arose about how the U.S. was thwarting Red aggression. When a U.S. Senate subcommittee appointed in 1953 by Sen. Joseph McCarthy investigated Korean War atrocities, the committee explicitly declared that, “war crimes were defined as those acts committed by enemy nations.” 

In 1999, forty-six years after the cease fire in Korea, the Associated Press exposed a 1950 massacre of Korean refugees at No Gun Ri. U.S. troops drove Koreans  out of their village and forced them to remain on a railroad embankment. Beginning on July 25, 1950, the refugees were strafed by U.S. planes and machine guns over the following three days. Hundreds of people, mostly women and children, were killed. The 1999 AP story was widely denounced by American politicians and some media outlets as a slander on American troops.

The Pentagon promised an exhaustive investigation. In January 2001, the Pentagon released a 300-page report purportedly proving that the No Gun Ri killings were merely “an unfortunate tragedy” caused by trigger-happy soldiers frightened by approaching refugees.

President Bill Clinton announced his “regret that Korean civilians lost their lives at No Gun Ri.” In a January 2001 interview, Clinton was asked why he used “regret” instead of “apology.” He declared, “I believe that the people who looked into it could not conclude that there was a deliberate act, decided at a high enough level in the military hierarchy, to acknowledge that, in effect, the government had participated in something that was terrible.” Clinton specified that there was no evidence of “wrongdoing high enough in the chain of command in the Army to say that, in effect, the government was responsible.”

In 2005, Sahr Conway-Lanz, a Harvard University doctoral student, discovered a letter in the National Archives from the U.S. ambassador to Korea, John Muccio, sent to Assistant Secretary of State Dean Rusk on the day the No Gun Ri massacre commenced. Muccio summarized a new policy from a meeting between U.S. military and South Korean officials: “If refugees do appear from north of U.S. lines they will receive warning shots, and if they then persist in advancing  they will be shot.” The new policy was radioed to Army units around Korea on the morning the No Gun Ri massacre began.  The U.S. military feared that North Korean troops might be hiding amidst the refugees. The Pentagon initially claimed that its investigators never saw Muccio’s letter but it was in the specific research file used for its report.

Conway-Lanz’s 2006 book Collateral Damage quoted an official U.S. Navy history of the first six months of the Korean War stating that the policy of strafing civilians was “wholly defensible.” An official Army history noted: “Eventually, it was decided to shoot anyone who moved at night.” A report for the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge justified attacking civilians because the Army insisted that “groups of more than eight to ten people were to be considered troops, and were to be attacked.”

In 2007, the Army recited its original denial: “No policy purporting to authorize soldiers to shoot refugees was ever promulgated to soldiers in the field.” But the Associated Press exposed more dirt from the U.S. archives: “More than a dozen documents—in which high-ranking U.S. officers tell troops that refugees are ‘fair game,’ for example, and order them to ‘shoot all refugees coming across river’—were found by the AP in the  investigators’ own archived files after the 2001 inquiry. None of those documents was disclosed in the Army’s 300-page public report.” 

A former Air Force Pilot told investigators that his plane and three others strafed refugees at the same time of the No Gun Ri massacre; the official  report claimed “all pilots interviewed … knew nothing about such orders.” Evidence also surfaced of other massacres like No Gun Ri. On September 1, 1950, the destroyer USS DeHaven, at the Army’s insistence, “fired on a seaside refugee encampment at Pohang, South Korea. Survivors say 100 to 200 people were killed.”

Slaughtering civilians en masse became routine procedure after the Chinese Army intervened in the Korean war in late 1950. U.S. Commander Gen. Douglas MacArthur spoke of turning North Korean-held territory into a “desert.” The U.S. military eventually “expanded its definition of a military target to any structure that could shelter enemy troops or supplies.” In a scoring method that foreshadowed the Vietnam war body counts, Air Force press releases touted the “square footage” of “enemy-held buildings” that it flattened. General Curtis LeMay summarized the achievements: “We burned down every town in North Korea… and some in South Korea, too.” A million civilians may have been killed during the war, and a South Korean government Truth and Reconciliation Commission uncovered many previously unreported atrocities. 

The Pentagon strategy on Korean War atrocities succeeded because it left truth to the historians, not the policymakers. The facts about No Gun Ri finally slipped out—ten presidencies later. Even more damaging, the Rules of Engagement for killing Korean civilians were covered up until after four more U.S. wars. If U.S. policy for slaying Korean refugees had been exposed during that war, it might have curtailed similar killings in Vietnam (many of which were not revealed until decades after the war).

Former congressman and decorated Korean War veteran Pete McCloskey warned, “The government will always lie about embarrassing matters.” The same shenanigans permeate other U.S. wars. The secrecy and deceit surrounding U.S. military interventions has had catastrophic consequences in this century. The Bush administration exploited the 9/11 attacks to justify attacking Iraq in 2003, and it was not until 2016 that the U.S. government revealed documents exposing the Saudi government’s role in financing the hijackers (15 of 19 were Saudi citizens). The Pentagon covered up the vast majority of U.S. killings of Iraqi civilians until Bradley Manning and Wikileaks exposed them in 2010. There is likely reams of evidence of duplicity and intentional slaughter of civilians in U.S. government files on its endlessly confused and contradictory Syrian intervention. 

When politicians or generals appear itching to pull the U.S. into another foreign war, remember that truth is routinely the first casualty. The blood of civilian victims of U.S. wars is the political version of disappearing ink. But the kinfolk and neighbors of those victims could pursue vengeance regardless of whether cover-ups con the American people.

I've also been writing this one story that is entirely selfish and selfless and it basically writes itself but it's a collab between Dr. Eve and Dr. Lundi going on an adventure in Sami. @cilundiLundi has done a few doodles for the scenes and every time I think about how supportive she is of it I feel like bawling my eyes out. I'm so happy to be writing for someone so sweet and appreciative. Special attention to detail.

She is once again going on about her gun and I honestly know more about Sankta firearms now than I do about my own sword. I know the size of her bullets are big enough for me to hold like a dagger and I also know that this gun can be used for more than firing simple armour-piercing bullets. They can blow you up.

The following contains only the aftermath of the gacha and me being real chatty about the way characters look + expectations, so if you're looking for commentary of the story, please refer to Part II!

Hortus de Escapismo is on the horizon and Dr. Lundi is a radiant and unavoidable ball of excitement during the pulls. How could she NOT be??? Six months of saving, an ungodly ammount of pulls and a surprising eagerness of Executor to arrive home later (i.e. the fact out of eight 6*, only two were strangers).

Speaking of strangers, an obscure horse wandered into the pulls to remind her that he's still her number one husband and Executor comes second. Most likely because to summon Federico she changed Mlynar on her homescreen to Executor normal version and he got a little worried, the old man.

Among the 4 Doctors there's always 7 pots of each Elite, so it's no wonder the other one went to Dr. Pinkie before pity, which pretty much concluded our pulls. I don't know what happened to Dr. Kryo, but I personally didn't pull because Hoederererer is on the horizon four months from now and I am BEHIND because of Silverash Kernels.

Fastest character build ever in the world. I think maxing out characters ASMRs have to exist. It's so nice to see it happen so fast. Aesthetically pleasing, complete and right.

But since I'm giving statements that are already unrequested, I just want to say that Executor is not my type. I don't like stiffly blunt and I am also on the side of Sarkaz, so just Sanktas in general are a little... off for me. Except Enforcer, Enforcer is my baby and I would kill for him.

Go on, TRY and convince me this isn't one of the coolest arts ever. I need old 6* characters to get a revamp on their E2 art, because compared to this few can truly compare. God is behind him, holding the scythe, the statue is half a robot for whatever reason???? And it's so cool???

Not to mention that he looks exactly the same face-wise versus his E0 art, which cannot be said about, I don't know, SilverAsh, who looks like he was born in a wet cardboard box all alone in an alley.

His token is also so so so so cute, I don't know what the overall experience with listening to him talking into your ear feels like, but just-- just read this:

Base skill not all that impressive. For some reason while looking into it Dr. Pinkie expressed surprise, because she couldn't find any other operator who gives productivity for EXP cards, but by complete accident I saw FEater is another one.

Insider's splash looks great, he's the embodyment of that one weirdo who always gets in trouble for some reason. Might be the spiky hair. Might be the army of pigeons following him.

Their voice actors are amazing so far as I heard, so we wait and see what he's like personality wise.

You dont understand how long I was looking at Hoederer's png wishing to know what kind of man he is now, what does he like to do for fun, does he think of the future would he be thinking about me when we are apart, would he see things and pick them up for me, would be care if I joke about the candy system, do his ears blush, are his horns sensitive, does he have a tail tucked in somewhere

I need to take his clothes off personally after a long day, to polish his boots and Iron his shirt or mend it while he soaks in the bath, I need him to know its a point of pride im sharing my nettle aloe and wallnut shower products with him, I need him to look me in the eyes when he walks out of the bath and I pass him a towel, I want him between my teeth so bad

If he has a tail I want to touch it, to feel it wrapped around my waist, I need the compassion and the love and the rest and momwntary peace

Sometimes I feel shame other times I am happy that I just have this internalized desire to take care of someone and I know it will depend on how much they appreciate it but I also know Hoederer hasnt had someone like that and I wish to be there for him

I want him to survive and figure himself out and when he does book signings me and my children will walk in hand in hand to give him icecream on a hot day or coffee on a cold day

He will have a new crimson scarf but I will sew in our initials and if he ever loses it on a mission and comes back home to me a little sad I will kiss his silly face and tell him its just fabric that can be stitched baxh together but if I lost him nobody would ever be able to put me back together

Part I. Phantom and Crimson Solitaire but the part where Dr. Eve is reading where the mission is situated + history + collectibles

Instead of Dr. Pinkie being the actual loremaster that I expected given their superiority in everything that ever happens with the game, I have reclaimed the role (at least when it comes to IS2) and that includes all my assumptions about whatever has happened and is happening in it.

First of all, while re-reading the previous post I made about Shalem and Phantom, I realized that, wait a minute, where the hell is this even situated?

Apparently, Gaul. Which I have been able to understand is basically France, but gone because they were too sassy. Something of that sort. My understanding before versus now.

Second of all, it's not Gaul itself, the place we stumble into is a castle in Calais-Blason. That is a part of Gaul formally, now it is a part of Northwestern Victoria. After the war nothing was left of it because of devastation and because all the people either fled or died.

Phantom was told by the Crimson Troupe that he was born in Calais-Blason and was taken by the Troupe after a flood Catastrophe swept through the area.

We don't really know if that's true or not though.

Then there is a description as we enter the loading screen of the castle that states:

A castle hidden within the woods constructed under the auspices of a Gaulish noble who perished in the war a few years after its completion, leaving it derelict. But a mysterious group has been calling it home recently...

I'm about to eventually figure out who the noble is and we know that the mysterious group is The Troupe. Their 'Blood Diamond' is Phantom and during some investigating of his memories, he was attracted my goodness knows what machinations to re-visit his old home. Our job is to, you won't believe it,

Gaul's story in general is as straightfoward as it can be based on the Wiki. It was an empire ruled by a family of Liberi located between Victoria, Ursus, and Leithanien. Gaul was so influential that its grand nomadic capital, Lingones, was nicknamed the "Capital of Terra".

Gaul was primarily known for its expansionism, and it reached its peak during the reign of its last Emperor, Corsica I, following the implementation of the "Second Economic Reform Act," a new codex that drastically strengthened Gaul's military.

No surprise there, since Corsica I came to lord over the country because of his military prowess and the rewards he's gained over the years of serving. He was putting all of his military power into expansionism when demand had grown more than what the land's riches could produce. Like any time in history, he thought that it's time to knock on their neighbours' doors and tell them their time is up.

Big mistake. What kind of professional, a military veteran looks at this man and in return says 'I can take him'. Like any monarch, outraged by the Gaul's proposition to become a vassal state, the Witch King refuted by turning all Gallic envoys in Leithanien into lifeless statues. That's how we ended up with the Gallo-Leithanian War.

That wasn't enough. Gaul also attempted to invade Victoria – which almost resulted in a complete defeat and annihilation of the latter, forcing Victoria to give up its northwestern colony that would later become Columbia.

In 1053, Victoria, under the leadership of King Frederick III, formed a coalition with Leithanien and Ursus to oppose Gaul, leading to the Battle of the Four Emperors. The war ends with Gaul's total annihilation, Lingones (the Capital) is wiped off the map, and the victors taking over Gaul's former territory.

The fall of Gaul is often considered the most tragic event in Terra's history. During its time, Gaulish culture was considered influential, but are now slowly fading to obscurity. Some collectors sought to preserve Galic relics while bakers and wineries tried to replicate the original Gaulish formula, but the latter are unable to match the original. With their homeland lost, many Gauls were scattered across Terra, and their nobilities were forced to serve the victors. Still, there are some Gallic restorationists who attempted to steal Gallic relics on display in museums in order to rally the surviving Gauls and bring the empire back to life.

Which leaves a lot of questions for where the current Victorian storyline is going to go, because I think most of the land and the people now consider themselves victorians. Granted, their descent remains marked, so here's a list of Gaulish people.

The Last Empress-Consort of Gaul: The wife of Corsica I, also known as the Natator. She chose to stay in the Gaulish imperial palace upon hearing the news of Corsica I's death and killed the invading enemies in a suicide attack by plunging an Originium shard into her body.

Outsiders make extraordinary displays of bravery that far surpass their normal abilities. However, as one of the few male Banshees out there, this has become a far too common sight to Logos.

You could lie to me and tell me that belongs to Logos and I will believe you. I don't understand a lick of what this signifies though. Maybe it is connected to death, maybe it is connected to music, or to the fact this is a relic of the Death Cult (The Troupe).

Absolutely terrible, actually. Nobody will understand the reference but this reminds me of how Lumine fell off the stage in Off-Script by Jules and Amarettiii. Great scene, wonderful timing in what is happening before that. Genshin brainworms shall always swarm me when Arknightsing and vice versa.
