I've been using the X1 Yoga Gen 5 as my personal machine since May of 2020. It has all my work software loaded, and I do use it to work, but it has fallen into a more comfortable use case because of the pandemic. I haven't had the opportunity to travel, and test the 4G LTE functionality as I would have liked, so this review is going to revolve around the device from a work from home perspective. When the pandemic is over, I'll update this review with a report on travel worthiness.

Thinkpad Things

It has all the usual Thinkpad goodness. Famous Thinkpad MIL-SPEC testing, perfect keyboard experience, track point, and sturdy construction.

What's a little different is the CNC aluminum chassis. I've owned a few other laptops that boast this material and build, and they are nice, but Lenovo has done something with it I can't quite describe. Aluminum products always feels a little sloppy in the hand. Depending on milling tolerances and anodizing, things made of aluminum seem blobby and lacking precision when looking at a product. The X1 Yoga Gen 5 almost doesn't feel real, held in the hand, knowing what it's made of.

I don't find myself pressing my thumb against any part of it, and wishing the chassis met up a little better, or wanting the lid to close more uniformly. Most aluminum chassis laptops are just off, somewhere, throwing them off everywhere. Even my very premium Lenovo C940 Yoga, made of aluminum, feels off in the way everything comes together. The X1 Yoga Gen 5 doesn't suffer from any of that, everything feels straight and true on the laptop.

Whatever Lenovo did here, they should keep doing it, if they're going to have more laptops with an aluminum chassis in their lineup.

Work From Home

On those days that I don't want to leave my couch, or mess with a charger, the Low-Power Display options has been really nice. At night, I can turn the display down really low, and during the day it'll get close to 400 nits. This is really nice because I can wake up with my laptop, carry it around with me all day, and have it on during the evening to poke at work, or personal projects.

I mention this because my Lenovo Yoga C940 has a UHD IPS, glossy, HDR 400, 500 nits display, that I can't use comfortably in a dark room. Even at the lowest setting, the screen is too bright. It's not a complaint I thought I would ever have, but here we are. If I was carrying it to a brightly lit office, or coffee shop, and using it to run presentations for clients and customers, it'd be great. Working from home all day, not so much.

If you're getting anything for work from home, definitely look for matte finish, low-power display options, with a 400 nit brightness ceiling.

The 720 HD Webcam and four array microphones (360° far-field) work better than expected for video chat. I'm on camera 2-3 times a week for about 15 hours during the day and night. I've not had any complaints about the ability of others to hear or see me during meetings, or Dungeons & Dragons on Discord. There was the usual battle with Windows 10 to find the microphone hardware, and get things set up, but smooth sailing after that.

For handwriting capture and light artwork tasks, the Lenovo Pen Pro housed in the silo on the right side of the machine does the job well. Pen input with the included stylus is good, latency also good. I would recommend buying a second stylus if you're going to do any serious artwork requiring comfort and precision.

If they've been able to work aluminum this well, I'll bet a Titanium product will be just as good. One thing you do lose with the Titanium model, the Lenovo Pen Pro that slides into the chassis. The Titanium Yoga is just too small and thin (almost a half pound lighter than the X1 Yoga Gen 5) to accomodate it.

The X is probably the most interesting update in the Surface Pro’s recent history, with a slimmer profile, larger screen, thinner bezels and plenty of new internals. But the Pro 7, which is going on sale today, starting at $749, is a competent upgrade that gives Surface Pro users exactly what they want – even if it sticks to a tried and tested formula.

It’s pretty easy to sum up what’s new in the Surface Pro 7. There’s the new 10th-generation Intel chips and a USB-C port for both charging and attaching accessories. The Surface Pen and detachable keyboard remain optional — and somewhat pricey — accessories, though Microsoft tells me that a large percentage opt to get the type cover keyboard, with fewer opting for the pen. There are new colors for the accessories, though: poppy red (which is what Microsoft provided me with my test device and which is indeed very red) and ice blue. The type cover also feels a little bit stiffer, but that’s hard to quantify.

The versions with Intel’s newest i3 and i5 chips are fanless, while the i7 version does have a fan.

And that’s pretty much it. The overall design remains the same, with its bezels that are starting to feel a bit too thick these days, and a thin strip of air vents around the sides. The kickstand is something Microsoft has pretty much perfected at this time, so it’s no surprise that it remains virtually unchanged. While Microsoft added a single USB-C port, the plug for the Surface connector is also still there to help you charge your Surface or connect it to a docking station.

Since you’re mostly going to use a Pro on the go, I don’t think only having a single USB-A and USB-C port is a major issue. If you’re using it at home, then getting the $199 Surface Dock is likely the way to go anyway.

As for the design, if it wasn’t for that USB-C port, you’d have a hard time telling the Pro 7 from the recent Surface Pros. Everything else looks pretty much identical to last couple of iterations.

I’ve used the i5-powered Pro 7 while I was travelling over the course of the last few days. Microsoft promises that the new Intel chips are up to twice as fast as their predecessors. I’m sure those numbers work out in artificial benchmarks. In daily use, I noticed that using the device did indeed feel a bit smoother than the last few Surfaces I tested that fell into the same price range as this machine. I’m among those that barely use the pen, but when I do, the experience feels seamless with no noticeable lag in most circumstances.

Microsoft promises full-day battery life and that’s pretty much what I got, too, using the Surface to write for a few hours on the plane, surfing the web during a layover and watching Netflix in the evening.

If you’re in the market for a Surface Pro, this is obviously the one to get. If you own a Pro 5 or 6 and you’re still happy with their performance, then there’s no real reason to upgrade. Depending on your use case, the Surface Pro X may be the one to get anyway, but that’s still two weeks out and we’ll have to say how well it performs in the real world and if it’s worth the higher starting price of $999. Minding the Grinds: Our Approach to Sampling and Judging Grind Consistency

There were a number of ways we could have approached the evaluation of the four grinders reviewed this month with regard to producing consistent particle size. We could have judged the machines based on the results of brewing with the grounds they put out, or simply through visual inspection of the grounds, or by manually sieving each sample to separate particles by size.

Instead, we decided to send samples of coffee ground by each machine to our friends at the Horiba Instruments particle science lab in Irvine, California, for particle size distribution analysis using laser diffraction equipment, because that appeared to represent the clearest, most objective route to evaluating the grind consistency of the four machines reviewed in this report.

Yet even with that decision made, there remained a number of ways we could have gone about selecting the samples, as well as various ways to approach the resulting data. Here’s what we did, and why.

Settings vs. Brew Methods

First, we decided not to get too bogged down in the particular requirements of specific brew methods, as these can be quite subjective as well as influenced by complex, interacting variables — brew water temperature, darkness of roast, green coffee character, filter material and construction, etc.

We did consult the settings for various brewing methods recommended by the instruction manuals provided by each grinder-maker. We also consulted material on grind size produced by the KRUVE company, which produces a set of sieves for isolating a specific micron range of coffee particles for more refined brewing. (KRUVE recommends you toss out the particles that are too large or too fine for optimal brewing.)

The instructions provided by grinder manufacturers could suggest a starting point for an optimal range of particle size, but they are simply too vague and are often specific to the performance of one machine. If anything, they lean toward recommendations coarser than used by many professionals and aficionados for most brewing methods. This may be because manufacturers predict a coarser setting on their machines will result in fewer fines that clog up a filter or flat-out stop a brewing act; the trade-off being that while a coarser setting may produce a weaker, more listless cup, at least the consumer will get a cup.

The KRUVE recommendations for specific brewing methods, meanwhile, present an impossible ideal for a grinder, veering substantially finer than the norm because the KRUVE system eliminates the very fine particles that other brew guides assume you’re brewing with.

What’s universally true, though, is that a more consistent particle size makes for better brewing, no matter how you brew. So we decided to evaluate grinders based simply on the consistency of the particle size they produce, regardless of the brewing method to which that particle size is best suited.

Choosing the Sample Settings

So without focusing on brewing method, and without straining the grinders to their extremes of either coarseness or fineness, we simply twisted the dials and knobs on each grinder to produce: 1) a sample at one or two notches finer than the coarsest setting on the grinder; 2) a sample one or two notches coarser than the finest setting, and 3) a sample at the center setting. We did this with a light (but not aggressively light) roasted coffee, and a darker roasted coffee (just nudging into second crack but not too far into it). This netted us a total of six grind samples from each machine, ranging from what the grinder setting proposed as fine through medium to coarse, in each case tested at two different roast levels.

Note that we are not proposing that any of these particle size ranges is any more appropriate to any given brewing method than any other range. All we wanted to know was to what degree each grinder generated a consistent grind size at various settings, and to what degree it did not.

“Generally Optimal Range”

This is where our friends at Horiba really helped us out. Horiba provided mountains of data, packaged into a wide variety of stats and calculations. They provided wavy-lined graphs that gave form to the vast range of particle sizes. They identified and charted for each sample the mean, median and mode particle sizes, the standard deviations, coefficients of variation and so on. Particle size distribution analysis has application in a huge variety of fields, from pharmaceuticals to ceramics, construction to food & beverage, and yet no one had ever collaborated with them on a comparative analysis of particles generated by coffee grinding machines amid the quest for a better cup of coffee.

In the end, we had to ask ourselves: At what point does variation in particle size become detrimental to brew quality? Given that absolute uniformity is impossible, just how tight a range do we really need? Even the Specialty Coffee Association’s official Cupping Protocol is stunningly generous in this regard: It only requires that the grind for cupping be of a particle size of which 70-75% passes through the standard #20 mesh sieve (with holes of 841-micron diameter). That’s an acceptance of 25-30% oversized particles with no limit at all for undersized.

The 400-Micron Window

Extraction scientists could perhaps provide an answer to our question, but have not, at least so far as we can tell. We do know that the need for consistent particle size is different for different brew methods; for example, the window for acceptable consistency is much slimmer for espresso than for drip.

We also know that KRUVE established its grind size recommendations based on their own research of coffee extraction times in relation to the water-to-coffee contact time, pressure and temperature. For most methods, the ranges they recommend are in windows 400 microns wide. So, somewhat arbitrarily, we decided to adopt a 400-micron window as the basis for our evaluations.

With Horiba’s help, for each sample we zeroed in on the mode particle size, meaning the particle size that occurs most prevalently within a given sample. We then set boundaries 200 microns larger and 200 microns finer, creating a 400-micron range with the mode size at its center. We then calculated what percentage of each sample landed within that range, and used that key metric to compare grind consistency among samples and grinders.

Particles that measured larger than the 400-micron window we called “coarser.” Finer than that window “finer.” Particles that fell inside the 400-micron window we called “optimal.”

Summary grind consistency test results based on laser particle size distribution analysis by Horiba Instruments for the four grinders reviewed for this report. Six samples were tested from each grinder representing various grind settings (coarse, medium, fine) and two degrees of roast (light and medium-dark). Shown here are results for the best-performing sample among the six produced by each grinder. The blue column represents the percentage of the sample reduced to a range of particle sizes we identified as optimal; the red column the percentages produced coarser than optimal, and the green finer than optimal. For an explanation of how we determined our optimal range of particle sizes see earlier in this article.

Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 vs. Sennheiser HD 4.50

There’s no denying the fact that wireless headphones may seem to cost you a fortune at times, but when you think of the freedom they offer in terms of mobility and a clutter-free musical experience, they are worth a shot. Whatever is your reason to upgrade to a pair of wireless headphone, I get an opportunity to help you choose. And today we are comparing two pairs of wireless headphones from two camps, the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 and Sennheiser HD 4.50.

Plantronics and Sennheiser are two international brands and the competition is quite rough because of the features these two come packed with. The Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 and Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC wireless noise cancelling headphones seems formidable opponents in the wireless headphone category. However, audiophiles will be happy that I picked these two for comparison. There is a clear winner by a slight margin. So, read on!

Build

The Sennheiser 4.50 BTNC fondly knows as the HD 4.50 is a sturdy bad boy. Going over the physical features, the headphones are all plastic, but not the cheap-feeling plastic. They are well made; they don’t rattle or feel finicky. They feel like a confident product to test.  The headband is covered with little padding but does not affect comfort. The ear cups fold in neatly for storage into the included fabric carry-case.

Speaking of Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2, you get a nice carry pouch with the headphones to tuck it away safely inside. In the box (cloth bag), you find an audio cable, a USB charging cable and the instruction book and warranty information. When it comes to build quality, the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 feels solid and little more refined than their previous versions. They are slimmer than both their original and the Backbeat Pro plus.

As far as design goes, these aren’t the prettiest headphones but the plastic around the ear cups has a textured pattern to it. The headphone padding is a dark brown that gives the headphones a more professional look. The fake wood pattern on the outside of the ear cups may, at first, feel out of place and might not be for everyone, but it may grow on you over time.

One other aspect of the headphones that the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 doesn’t have is the ability to fold. The ear cups do swivel 90 degrees; so it is easy to slide them back into the carrying pouch once they are flat. However, if you are looking to save space in your bag while traveling or commuting you might have an issue with these.

Comfort

Moving on to comfort, the Sennheiser 4.50 seems clampy at first but soon you get used to the full size headphones. It was a subjective judgement as the new pair of any headphone does feel a little tight straight out of the box. However, the jawline pressure and wear-fatigue disappears with use and can be worn for extended periods of time without any issue. Weighing a 236 grams, the Sennheiser 4.50 can feel a little clampy if you have a sensitive head/ jawline.

The Plantronics Backbeat Pro weighs a little more than 289g and is a little bulky but manageable than their previous versions and mostly made of plastic. The pleather padding on the earcup and the headband feels smooth and gives it a premium look. The bottom portion of the headband is even made with a breathable mesh and adjustable bands. The overall feel is good but u feel a weight on your crown when you use it for extended periods of time.

Controls

One of the main themes of the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 series is the level of control that the user has over their music without needing to reach for a source device. That trend continues here with buttons, switches, and rotating wheels all over the place. On the right ear cup, there is a multi-function button on the side, micro USB and 3.5-millimeter inputs on the bottom and then a button and a switch along the edges.

The left ear cub has a single switch along the edge with playback buttons on the side and a rotating volume control ring. The Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 is easy enough to connect and it does have NFC, so you should not have a problem if you have a compatible device. The backbeat pro tools do have a confusingly robust set of switches and buttons but they let you control, basically everything, without actually needing to use your smartphone. You can play/pause music, skip between tracks or adjust the volume using the controls on the left ear cup. You can also access any personal assistance or answer phone calls by pressing the button on the right side of the ear cup.  If you take off the headphones, sensors in the ear cup will detect that they’ve been taken off your head and music will pause automatically.

When we look at the Sennheiser HD 4.50 controls, the right ear cup has the power ON/OFF, a very smooth multi-function switch below the power button that allows you to skip and go back and forth on music tracks. The same button is also used to answer calls, which we tested in a public place and found that voice wasn’t very clear to the user on the other end. Light to moderate background noises are picked up by the headphone. There is a 2.5 mm port for wired connection and Sennheiser does offer a locking wire cord, so that the pin is not yanked out while in use. To charge the Sennheiser 4.50, a micro USB port is available.

Battery

The Sennheiser 4.50 has a battery life of up to 25 hours with ANC off. With ANC, Sennheiser HD 4.50 gives up to 19 hours of use. If you connect these headphones to your PC, it charges automatically and do not require any driver installations. One important piece to note is that the headphones switches off while charging and you cannot use them.

Plantronics claims a battery life of 24 hours of constant playback, which seems to be true in my tests as well. Tapping the button on the right ear cup when you’re not wearing them will also illuminate a tiny indicator, so you know roughly how much juice it has left.

Active noise Cancelation

Jumping on to the ANC performance, I found the Sennheiser 4.50 worked absolutely fine, but not as great as the Bose Quiet Comfort, especially outdoors in coffee shops and public spaces, where I wore them continuously for a day as a part of this testing. A rocker button activates the ANC on Sennheiser HD 4.50 when using them wirelessly.

The Plantronics Backbeat Pro has a switch to turn on or off active noise cancellation as well as the open mic mode. This uses the microphones in the headphones to let sound in so you can hear what’s going on around you while the ANC is switched on. These are ANC headphones but the Backbeat Pro 2 just cuts the outside and ambient noise by half when compared to other premium headphones including the HD 4.50.

Connectivity

One of the standout features of the Plantronics Backbeat  Pro 2 series is the solid wireless range they offer. They have class 1 Bluetooth, which means you can stream music up to about a 100 feet and in our testing we got a little under 80 but that’s still pretty good.

NFC, apart from Bluetooth, is one of the features available on the Sennheiser 4.50 for streamline pairing. Bluetooth connectivity is very strong on these on-ear headphones and works with houses or brick-walled areas with ease and personally, I did not experience any break in sound or quality while moving around in the house or office areas.

Sound quality

Speaking of sound, the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2 has a decent low end but they are a little too big sounding when compared to our contender today. Songs with deep base thumps or rumbling noises tend to sound a little muddy. It doesn’t feel bad but there is noticeable audio bleed if you are in a silent room. They often give a pretty nice balance with good amount of detailing without piercing through your ear drum in the volume levels of 50% to 70%. The airy reverb and the highs got cut down a little, but even on max volume they were comfortable to listen.

The Sennheiser 4.50 provides a very balanced audio experience – accurate and clean is what you are going to get. The bass is neutral and not altered or base-boosted, the mids are equal with the other high frequency responses and does not come as bright or recessed either. However, I wished for a little more resolution and detail in the mid-range for a more vibrant experience. From a consumer’s point of view, I am confident that these microscopic aspects will be hardly visible (I mean audible) and can pull up a great deal of romance with whatever you listen. The highs does have roll-offs and plays it quite safe because it doesn’t come anywhere near ‘tin-y’ (metallic like that of tin reverbs) and sharp, which is good. The 4.50’s are very easy to listen to without any listening fatigue.

Prototype Drive: 2019 BMW 3 Series Sedan

NÜRBURG, Germany – Our heroes are exhausted, hot exhausts crackling like tiny fireworks, dust-coated brakes emitting the aroma of hard use. Four pre-production examples of the next-generation 2019 BMW 3 Series, codenamed G20, are lined up in the M division’s Nürburgring workshop, ready for fuel, clean windshields, and adjustments to their tire pressures. Here and there beneath the track-marred camouflage vinyl, the body color shines through—its soft disguise no longer leaving much to the imagination.

Peter Langen, a BMW veteran in charge of suspension development, gives car No. 3 a friendly pat on the roof after its latest flogging. “The new 3 Series celebrates the evolution of driving pleasure,” Langen says. “After all, the new model is lighter and yet more rigid, more powerful as well as more efficient, puristic, and innovative. It is a notably more advanced piece of kit, but is still a BMW through and through.”

A half hour later I’m on my own in a BMW 330i prototype on the approach to the Nürburgring, free to play with every switch within reach of my fingertips. But I can’t lose sight of the rabbit in front of me—Jos van As, BMW’s chief engineer of driving dynamics, part-time racer, and one of the quickest men in the pool of BMW pros. Van As knows the ’Ring from experience. I know it primarily from the video games nicked from my sons. My heart’s beating out of my chest as we bypass the entrance to the grand prix circuit and dive in tandem toward Hatzenbach, attempting to build up grip and self-confidence early.

“Everything okay?” Van As asks over the radio. “Everything okay,” comes my response. What feels to me like the final qualifying lap for the next 24-hour race is probably is no more than an easy eight tenths to someone like van As. All I know is we’re going very fast, and the 2019 3 Series is fantastically stable even through spots where the Fast and Furious joystick jockeys would regularly end up in the ditch. The new 3 sedan sticks to the tarmac like the proof of origin labels on fresh fruit and puts the power down in a progressive, fuss-free manner. It refrains from exaggerated body motions, dives through dips with magnetic stoicism, and flies over crests like a fighter jet practicing touch-and-gos.

Its buttoned-down behavior is somewhat surprising given the new 3 Series lacks such high-tech ingredients as air suspension, active anti-roll bars, and rear-wheel steering. In fact, the base version comes with a passive suspension that trades sportiness for relaxation. The optional sport suspension is quite a bit tauter and commensurately more agitated over the rough stuff. If our play-day on the Nürburgring was anything to go by, your best bet is probably the Adaptive Drive dynamic suspension, which spreads its talents over a wider range than the current system. The familiar driving dynamics control switch invites you to choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual, and Eco Pro.

On the long, full-throttle uphill section between Bergwerk and Klostertal, a little more grunt wouldn’t hurt. Despite an increase of power and torque to roughly 260 hp and 295 lb-ft for the 330i’s 2.0-liter turbo four—making it the most powerful BMW four cylinder ever—it still lacks the some of the force of BMW’s 3.0-liter six. On the plus side, the engine revs happily, tip-in is super-brisk and tip-out is nicely laid back. BMW says fuel economy for the 2019 3 Series will be marginally improved thanks in part an overall weight reduction of as much as 121 lb and in spite of the addition of an artery-blocking exhaust particulate filter. Acceleration to 60 should happen one or two tenths quicker than the outgoing 330i, though top speed is again restricted to 155 mph.

At Hohe Acht, a lap of the ’Ring enters its most challenging phase. From here on, every move must be spot-on: braking point, turn-in, line, gear, throttle. Some corners invite you to clip the apex, others for a wider radius. With the exception of occasional gravel traps, the runoff areas are strips of grass lined with triple-stacked Armco barriers. During lap two, the tires begin to feel the heat. They still hang on, but the grip is a little soapier now, more lock is required for the same effect, understeer becomes more prominent, and pushing the extra-wide rears past the DSC’s happy zone takes less and less effort. Still not enough drama? Summon the DSC sport handling mode and brace yourself for a family-sized helping of lift-off or power-on oversteer.

Unlike the 5 Series, the 3 Series still uses the trademark strut-type front suspension. A disadvantage? Not in this case. “Mechanically, this is a totally honest piece of kit,” says Langen. One particularly interesting feature is BMW’s new progressive damping system, which is making its debut on the 3 Series. BMW says it helps the car strike a more precise balance between sport feel and ride comfort in large part by deploying lift controlled as opposed to electronically controlled dampers. “Drive the car on public roads, and you will quickly get the gist of it,” says Langen. No sooner said than done. This time, van As straps himself into the passenger seat, puts on his sunglasses and gives me the thumbs up. The roads are narrow and winding, with poor sightlines and pocked surfaces. “A car that does well here does well everywhere,” says van As, grinning broadly.

As for how it looks under the camo, though the G20 3 Series is an evolutionary design, it’s a prettier car all round. The top edge of the kidney grille slants back onto the hood, the wider and slimmer headlights trade the trademark corona ring signature for LED hockey sticks, the more sculpted front bumper comes with three enlarged air intakes, and the sickle-shaped taillights are neatly integrated in the more muscular rear end. Since the 2019 3 Series will be available with just about every conceivable assistance system imaginable, there are plenty of dots, warts, and blobs giving away cameras and sensors.

The interior, on the other hand, has been redesigned from scratch. It’s hard to fall in love with the barely legible, over-styled instrumentation, but the three displays work quite well together. The center stack is more clearly structured, and the controls grouped around the shifter are easy to decipher. Those of you who love to zoom, scroll, and swipe, and who consider voice control the most failsafe man-machine interface will feel instantly at home in the new 3 Series—even if gesture control and semi-autonomous driving features are so far conspicuous by their absence.

After a brief coffee stop, we’re back on the road, having just switched from a six-speed manual equipped rear-drive model to a 330i xDrive with the eight-speed automatic. Thanks to its AWD setup the car runs on rails through the twisties, and the self-shifter feels quicker and more eager. Counterintuitively, working the paddles instead of the manual gear lever makes this variant a more involving drive. But after having tried three different gearbox and suspension configurations on two dramatically different terrains, we found it difficult to tell Sport apart from Sport Plus, to take into account the different tire formats, to properly assess Comfort versus Sport.

Van As exhibits a coolness that encourages me to inch the car closer and closer to the limit. Even when a change of tarmac triggers snap oversteer, when turn-in and front end grip are two or three tenths of a second apart, the Dutchman pairs pastoral calm with casual comments like, “Never lift. That’s it. Good man.” The man is fearless. Confidence grows from one corner to the next, trust follows suit, and together we explore new levels of lateral g-force and deceleration. Once more, it’s the steering that makes all the difference—especially in Sport, when the tactile blend of effort, weight, response, self-centering, and damping puts the road right into your hands. The suspension, too, works best in Sport because the extra firmness barely affects compliance, allowing the new 3 Series to remain quite supple and balanced. Having said that, the G20 is another BMW that doesn’t deal especially well with transverse ridges, sharp potholes, and deep longitudinal ruts. In terms of overall chassis-related systems integration, however, this could very well be the new king of B- and C-roads.

The final model I slip into is a 330i with the M Sport pack, an automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Light-footed and feisty, this version is about 60 percent sedan and 40 percent sports car. Upon turn-in, the slightly stiffer steering meets a pleasantly subtle stabilizing counteraction, the initially wooden ride improves with speed, the dynamic weight distribution maintains a fine balance, and the chosen line rarely calls for corrections. The upgraded brakes included as part of the M Sport pack use four-piston front calipers, larger-diameter discs, and a fast-responding integrated booster with a more clearly defined trigger point. While pedal feel and response are nicely intuitive, the actual stopping power didn’t leave a lasting impression.

The deeper the route winds into the afternoon, the more mental notes gather in the back of my mind. Is the gap between Sport and Sport Plus big enough? Would Sport Plus not deserve harder and shorter upshifts? Why is there no switch to deactivate the irritatingly loud exhaust? Could the interaction between the diff lock and DSC be smoother and better-connected? Why is coasting only possible in Eco Pro and Comfort?

True, most of these issues are software-related and could be fixed before the car goes on sale early next year. And they’re trivialities compared to the big picture, which shows a new 3 Series that can be an easy-going cruiser or a beastly tarmac peeler that still seats five in no less comfort than its predecessor. Given what we’ve experienced thus far during a very challenging and enlightening day on and around the ’Ring, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of what’s yet to come in the form of the M340i or, better still, the next M3.
