Hi jen! 20 something masc bisexual who just cant figure out if theyre a man or a woman here. I dont really feel comfortable talking about this stuff but writing anonymously is a lot less daunting and you seem like a really chill person and such a good mom. When i was youger, around 16, i cut my hair short and dressed less conventional (stopped wearing what my mom put out for me lol), bc i wanted to express myself. I didnt get the "mens" haircut i wanted originally, but i made up for it with flannels and hoodies. Slowly, occasionally, people started to ask me my sex/gender and when someone read me as male i was over the moon. By the time i was 18 i had stopped wearing makeup and tried hard to pass as male. It became pretty exhausting and my bestfriend is a very feminine guy, who usually gets read as a woman, inspired me to care less what people think i am. Im trying to take things as they come but with my mullet (thick long hair in the back) i noticed people read me as female more often than not. Its not insulting, but i cant help but feel disappointed. It felt so right when people read me as male. Im considering transitioning but i hate the idea of coming out to my family (as trans) and im scared of "being wrong about all this and screwing my body up", even thougt I like the prospect of the physical changes testosterone brings. All in all, I feel like ive been stuck in this undecided period for so long and something needs to change.

I am so sorry for the delay, my seasonal side jobs keep me very busy. I owe you some sincerity here because you asked and trust me to give you the truth, at least as I see it.

Of course I cannot in anyway see inside you or know the mix of emotions you have or the complex amount of experiences you have had in your 20 something life. When someone is struggling with hard questions being “PC” does no one any favors so here is my best take, but ultimately you know what is best and perhaps a therapist that will not just be a "yes" person would be very helpful.

Firstly, if you decide to transition for whatever reason, comfort, ease of experiencing the world etc, there is no rule that says you have to do anything at all to alter your body. You can be who you are within yourself. I am a lesbian and a woman whether or not some stranger on the street thinks so. (and the amount of time I am called "sir" in one day changes absolutely zero about me). Same applies to you. If you are concerned about medical or hormonal intervention you are not wrong to have caution. Anytime we take any medication from a blood pressure pill to nasal spray, doing due diligence and understanding the affects on our body is important. And each of us must take into consideration body health, genetics, dr suggestions, past medical history and the reality of what time, money and effort we are capable of exerting, especially if it means for a life time 

That all being said short hair, clothes, your interests and personality are not (should not) be gendered. There is no reason a woman can’t be and exist as a female who is not always thrilled with her body (looks and function) and be a human who loves doing a myriad of things that may or may not fit what society prescribes as our gender roles.  

You say you are disappointed when read as female? Why?  Do you dislike that they are not seeing the real you OR because you know being read as such means, in our culture, you are seen as less capable, treated differently, perceived as weak, not as smart as men and treated as the lesser of our society simply based on your body?  Either way, this is a them problem and not a you problem. You are as flawed, strong, smart, confident as you are no matter how they see you. It is not up to them to decide how human you get to be based on what sex you are. No one fits all the general attributes imposed gender roles wish for us to follow. 

Ask yourself, if I transition and am still consistently read as female, how will that affect me?  Will I become angry because I am putting time, effort and money into presentation and people still see what they see?  Am I going to feel better able to shrug off mistakes make by quick glances or because people have known me for years because I am more true to me?  Transition should happen in a vacuum, in my opinion. (disclaimer: I am not trans so perhaps this is not how trans men feel) You are who you are whether in a crowd of people or alone in a forest. Others should never make that decision or set the bar for you. EVER. They have no investment in your internal self. 

Since you are asking me, this is my experience. In my early years i understood very quickly how I was treated differently when people (men and women) saw me as a little boy instead of a little girl. In my teens I saw the way girls who hit puberty before me were immediately treated sexually, will less respect and I was like” well shit”.  I would have happily been seen as a boy/man and probably went to length to insure that. At 12 I was pretty confident I wanted to be or should have been a boy. My mom very colorfully explained to me there are issues with both sides and am a girl who wants what boys get in the world.. sooo get them as a girl.  THEN I met other lesbians and butches and bi women who are masculine and they told me their stories.. which were just like mine. I realized to be a man I had to give up being a woman and being a woman, my reality, physically and in my upbringing (in the 1980′s and 1990″) was the best and only way to connect to other people because I was not different with them or alone. I needed to be me 24/7 not just in public, not just at parties, not just with friends, but when I was alone, at night or mowing the yard. Perception and societal opinion had nothing to do with my body, my mind, my personality. 

Am I still affected by gender roles? Of course. Our society genders everything from pocket knives (camo or pink camo) to cars, abilities to shampoo! Do i sometimes let it slide when a man thinks he is talking to another man, sure.. why not? I learn somethings (some things I don’t want to know on occasion). But at the end of the day, most of the people I deal with begin to see me as a kind, capable women or...(translation: human) and when it counts I don’t want to be vague or dodgy about my sex, my gender or my sexual orientation. Who I am, who I deserved to be, my right to exist as me is too important. None of these were over night revelations. Time, experience, community as all helped me understand:

You have to live with you forever and always, don’t try to exist as the easiest way for society to view you.

Agent Russel returned to the Automat the next day and sat down at his booth, drumming his fingers on the table and looking around nervously.  It was so obvious that Peggy sent Angie over to discreetly ask if he thought he’d been followed.  From her vantage point behind the counter, she saw him shake his head.  Only then did she and Kay come to join him.

“What did she say?” asked Peggy.

Russel took out the page Kay had given him to give her, and shook his head.  “She didn’t even look at it.  She was, uh… I told her I had a message for her, and she immediately asked if it were from Peggy.”

Peggy didn’t have to ask – she knew those had been Dottie’s exact words.  Russel himself didn’t call her ‘Peggy’, but she knew Dottie did.

“Does she know where I am?” Peggy asked cautiously.

“I don’t know… I don’t think so,” said Russel.  “We haven’t told her much.  But she said to tell you that if anybody’s making deals it’ll be her setting the terms.”

Peggy hadn’t been expecting that.  She glanced at Kay, who also appeared puzzled.  “And what are those?”

“She says she’s willing to rescind her testimony and claim it was coerced,” Russel said, “she’ll even say Jack Thompson beat her up if you want her to.  But you have to get her out of jail and get her in contact with somebody she will specify.  If you try anything funny, she’ll get back in contact with Thompson and Masters.”

Peggy and Kay exchanged another look.  Not at all what they’d had in mind… but was it something they could work with?

Kay seemed to think so.  “In that case,” she said, “we’re gonna need one more favour from you.  Don’t worry, it’s nothing illegal.”

“That’s not reassuring,” Russel said.

“We need you to come up with a reason to unlock the cell door at a specific time,” Kay told him.  “Say, eleven PM tomorrow night.  We’ll do the rest.”

“I think I can figure something out,” said Russel.

“Great,” Kay nodded.

“Leave a message with Angie if you can’t manage it,” Peggy told him.  “We’ll check in before we try to do anything.”

“I will,” he promised.

They left him to eat his lunch in peace, and changed back into street clothes in the employee washroom.

“You sound as if you have a plan,” Peggy said to Kay, as they got back in the car.  They’d left the green Ford at the side of the road somewhere in New Jersey and taken a powder blue Chevrolet from behind a petrol station.  They couldn’t afford to be linked to a specific vehicle.

“I have part of a plan,” Kay replied, taking a pair of sunglasses out of the glove compartment.  These belonged to whoever owned the car, and had therefore been ‘borrowed’ along with it.  “There are drains in the floors of the cells.  I saw them when I was in there.”

“Yes, there are,” said Peggy.  They backed out of the alley and turned onto the street outside.  “They’re far too small for a person to fit through, though.”

“That’s fine,” Kay said.  “I’m told you have some experience navigating the storm drains of New York.  I need you to find a place where we can get down there and find our way to under the cells.”

“I can probably do that,” said Peggy.  “Anything else?”

“Yeah.  See if you can find us some gas masks,” Kay told her.  “Let me know where to drop you off, and then I have to do some shopping.  I’ll meet you back at the same spot in… let’s make it two hours.”

In the evening, they returned to the empty farmhouse in the Pine Barrens.  Peggy had located a manhole they could climb down without being observed, and used a ball of Kay’s knitting yarn to mark the route from there to underneath the police station.  From the drain right underneath it, it was not possible to actually see what was happening in Dottie’s cell – the opening was too small and high above them.  Kay assured her this didn’t matter.  She’d also obtained gas masks and rubber boots, buying both from a man selling questionably obtained army surplus behind a shop.

Kay, meanwhile, had purchased a number of chemicals, including bleach and acetone, and a variety of cooking and baking utensils.  In the farmhouse she put a mask on and did some complicated chemistry, producing a volatile, milky-white liquid that she carefully poured into the now-empty bleach bottle.  Even after that was done, she patiently waited five minutes after capping it for any vapor to disperse before she took the mask off.

“What is that?” Peggy asked, removing her own gas mask.

“Can you guess?” Kay wanted to know.

Peggy considered what she’d used to make it.  “I assume it’s similar to chloroform.”

“Close.  We call it nepenthyl,” Kay replied.  “Release it into an area and it’ll knock everybody out for five to eight minutes.  I don’t have the equipment to make it really pure, so there’s probably some chloroform in there too.  This won’t be enough to actually hurt anybody, though.”

Peggy smiled.  “Did you sit up at night in that little room above the Botticelli Gardens, making the peppery stuff you sprayed me with?”

“Yes,” said Kay.  “I needed non-lethal options.  Who lives and who dies affects the future… I don’t want to kill anybody unless I know they’re going to do evil things.  You have to live, and so does Howard, and Sousa, and Wilkes… and Thompson, even if he’s a pig.”

“So you were joking when you suggested killing Masters,” Peggy observed.

“I suspect Vernon Masters has already done evil things,” Kay told her, “but I’ll look into that later.  I want to cross the big names off my list first.”

Peggy recalled the list of Project Paperclip scientists she’d recited while in jail.  All of them were already most certainly war criminals, still alive only because the government considered them useful… and yet, were they not human beings nonetheless?  “It doesn’t bother you at all?  That you have to kill people to make your better future?”

“You know where I came from.  It took me years to learn how to be bothered by it in the first place.”  She shrugged one shoulder.  “But in this case, no.  I saw the world they helped make.  I lost friends, and my friends lost family, because of their direct successors.  My conscience can handle it.”

There was no message left for them at the Automat the next day, so Peggy and Kay took their equipment down into the drains below the police station and used an old fire hose to make sure the fumes of nepenthyl would go directly through the grate in Dottie’s cell.  Then there was nothing to do but wait.

At a quarter to eleven, they heard footsteps and voices coming from above.  Peggy held her breath and strained her ears to hear.  One of the voices sounded like Agent Russel… or was she imagining it?  She looked at Kay, who pressed a finger to her lips and listened for a moment.

“Agent Russel,” she murmured.  “What brings you here at this time of night?”  A pause.  “The head office wants some full-body photographs of her.  We need a record of scars and other distinguishing marks.”

Peggy kept very quiet.  Kay’s hearing was obviously much better than hers, but this couldn’t possibly be easy.

“Ma’am, please remove your clothing.”  Pause.  “Why, Agent Russel.  Are you trying to seduce me?”  Pause.  “Ma’am, I don’t want to have to force you.”  Pause.  “Really?  Because I think you’d enjoy that.”

Dottie knew.  Of course she did.  She was playing along.

Kay checked her watch, and then set the timer on the valve that would release the nepenthyl.  “Let’s go,” she whispered to Peggy.

They climbed up onto the street, and waited for a taxi to pass before pushing the manhole cover open.  Peggy got out first, and then reached down to help Kay.  They waited silently behind the building while the clock ticked down.  At eleven o’clock, Russel would get tired of Dottie’s taunting and open her cell.  Thirty seconds later, the chemical would release.  Hopefully everybody’s watches were in rough agreement, or this would all go very, very badly.

At three minutes past, Kay said, “now.”

They put on their gas masks and barged into the lobby.

Immediately they heard a scream.  The receptionist was still awake, holding a damp handkerchief over her mouth and nose with one hand, and the telephone receiver in the other.  For a moment she stared at these masked intruders in wide-eyed horror, and in so doing, she let the handkerchief drop.  A moment later she was unconscious on the floor behind her desk.

“Hello?” a tinny voice on the phone asked.  “Hello?  Iris?”

They had to hurry.

They ran down the steps to the holding cells.  The air here, where the majority of the drug was lingering, was still misty, but they could see light up ahead.  Peggy stepped over the unconscious bodies of policemen until she spotted Agent Russel’s blue blazer.  He was lying there still gripping Dottie’s wrist with one hand.  She had fallen on top of him.

Kay pulled out a roll of olive-coloured duck cloth tape and used it to bind Dottie’s hands and ankles, then wrapped more of it around her mouth.  Then she lifted the unconscious woman’s legs while Peggy took her shoulders, and they dragged her back upstairs.

In the lobby the receptionist was still unconscious.  The telephone was still off the hook.

They threw Dottie in the trunk of today’s car – a burgundy Oldsmobile – pulled their masks off, and drove away.

Only then, with everything done, did Peggy allow herself to notice that her heart was beating fit to burst from her chest, or that she was gasping for deep, non-filtered breaths of air.  They’d really just done it – they’d broken Dottie Underwood out of jail for a second time.  If this didn’t work out… if Dottie were recaptured and decided to turn Peggy in again, there’d be no getting out of it.  Once was special circumstances.  Twice was a pattern.

Once they were well away from the police station, they pulled into an alleyway.  When they opened the trunk, Dottie was waking up, but still groggy – Peggy pressed a rag soaked in the nepenthyl against her face to knock her out again.  Then they used the rest of the role of cloth tape to wrap their prisoner up like an Egyptian mummy.  There was absolutely no way Peggy was losing control of her again.

After that, they could take a more leisurely drive back out to their campsite in the abandoned farmhouse.  Nobody seemed to notice them as they passed through small towns on the way, and not enough people went through the Pine Barrens area to notice that three different cars had been parked there in as many days.  Upon arrival, they left Dottie in the trunk and went inside to get what sleep hey could.

“I think we’ll let her talk first,” said Kay, yawning.  “Then we’ll emphasize that we are now in charge, and give her our terms.”

Peggy wasn’t even sure what those were anymore.  “As long as we can have breakfast first,” she said.

In the morning they took their time, at least partially out of spite – Dottie had caused Peggy so many problems over the past couple of years, it served her bloody well right if she had to sit there tied up in a car boot for a few extra hours.  This also afforded them the chance to listen to the radio and get some more news.  The escape of a dangerous criminal did merit a mention, with a description of Dottie followed by an admonition not to underestimate her.

“And now for the news you’ve all been waiting to hear,” the announcer said.  “Captain America is in Washington, DC, for one more day, during which time he will visit the Smithsonian and dine at the White House with President and Mrs. Truman.  After that, he’s off to Annapolis, then Harrisburg, and will complete a tour of New England before heading south again.”

What was Steve thinking while all this went on, Peggy wondered.  Was he thinking of her?  Of his friend in Russia?

What about Daniel?  Peggy had no way of contacting either of them… and might never again.  Wouldn’t that be the easy solution, she thought.  If she never saw either man again, she wouldn’t have to worry about breaking anyone’s heart.

Portland protests see clashes between far-right, far-left groups (Reuters) Protests by rival far-right and left-wing groups in Portland descended into violence on Sunday, as the opposing sides engaged in clashes and at least one man was arrested for firing a gun at demonstrators. Nobody was hurt in an exchange of gunfire—and by Sunday evening there was no word on any injuries in numerous other skirmishes that saw opposing sides brawling, dousing each other in what appeared to be bear spray and breaking car windows of rivals. Police Chief Chuck Lovell said during a briefing on Friday that officers would not necessarily intervene to break up fights between the groups. But he added that “just because arrests are not made at the scene when tensions are high, does not mean that people won’t be charged with crimes.”

Hospitals and Insurers Didn’t Want You to See Their Prices (NYT) This year, the federal government ordered hospitals to begin publishing a prized secret: a complete list of the prices they negotiate with private insurers. The insurers’ trade association had called the rule unconstitutional and said it would “undermine competitive negotiations.” Four hospital associations jointly sued the government to block it, and appealed when they lost. They lost again, and seven months later, many hospitals are simply ignoring the requirement and posting nothing. But data from the hospitals that have complied hints at why the powerful industries wanted this information to remain hidden. It shows hospitals are charging patients wildly different amounts for the same basic services: procedures as simple as an X-ray or a pregnancy test. ‘A Beautiful Feeling’: Refugee Women In Germany Learn The Joy Of Riding Bikes (NPR) Like most Americans, I learned to ride a bike as a kid. I still remember the glee after learning how to ride a bike on a subdivision road where I grew up in Florida. But girls around the world don’t always get to experience the joy of a first bike ride. In some countries, conservative societies frown upon women and girls who ride bikes—it’s not considered dignified or appropriate—and gives a girl too much independence. Joumana Seif, a Syrian lawyer and activist, recalls riding a bike as an 11-year-old in the capital city of Damascus. “For the people [watching on the street], and even for the children, it was shocking to them that I was riding a bike. They started to say, ‘Oh, shame on you, you are a girl riding a bike,’” Seif says. “It just wasn’t in our culture.” But it’s never too late to learn. In Germany, a nonprofit group called Bikeygees is teaching refugee women from countries such as Iran, Iraq and Syria how to ride. Gunfire at Kabul airport kills 1 amid chaotic evacuations (AP/Foreign Policy) A firefight at one of the gates of Kabul’s international airport killed at least one Afghan soldier early Monday, German officials said, the latest chaos to engulf Western efforts to evacuate those fleeing the Taliban takeover of the country. The shooting at the airport came as the Taliban sent fighters north of the capital to eliminate pockets of armed resistance to their lightning takeover earlier this month. The Taliban said they retook three districts seized by opponents the day before and had surrounded Panjshir, the last province that remains out of their control. The tragic scenes around the airport have transfixed the world. Afghans poured onto the tarmac last week and some clung to a U.S. military transport plane as it took off, later plunging to their deaths. At least seven people died that day, in addition to the seven killed Sunday. Tens of thousands of people—Americans, other foreigners and Afghans who assisted in the war effort—are still waiting to join the airlift, which has been slowed by security issues and U.S. bureaucracy hurdles. US special operations forces race to save former Afghan comrades in jeopardy (ABC News) Current and former U.S. military special operations and intelligence community operatives are using their own networks of contacts to get elite Afghan soldiers, intelligence assets and interpreters to safety as they’ve become increasingly disillusioned and fed up with the U.S. government-led evacuation effort in Kabul, ABC News has learned. One informal group, dubbed “Task Force Pineapple,” began as a frantic effort last weekend to get one former Afghan commando into Hamid Karzai International Airport as he was being hunted by Taliban who were texting him death threats. They knew he had worked with U.S. Special Forces and the elite SEAL Team Six for a dozen years, targeting Taliban leadership, and was therefore at high risk of reprisal. The former elite commando was finally pulled into the U.S. security perimeter at the airport, where he shouted the password “pineapple” to American troops at the checkpoint. Two days later, the group of his American friends and comrades also helped get his family inside the airport to join him. The shortages are overwhelming, the medical staff exhausted. And with a new surge in coronavirus cases, Lebanon’s hospitals are at a breaking point. A/N: Perhaps it would be best if I just stick to (rather long, probably a bit windy) one-shots. I started writing this when I saw Black Panther the night it came out state-side. Slow and steady wins the race? No?

Summary: Sometimes it takes a while to get where you're meant to be. Post-BP. Pre-Infinity War.

Pairing: Bucky x Reader

Word Count: 4,182 (seriously, oops.)

The lab was so silent. He'd never truly appreciated how much the vibranium in the glass deadened the sounds of the trains and mining. Without the ever-present music his sister apparently needed to work, the lab was as quiet as the grave.

He quickly shook that particular thought away. The last year of T'Challa's life had brought him enough death. The future sadly promised more yet.

But today was not a day for sadness. And while he could not delay the inevitable, he could focus on the present for the time being. He turned then to his friend.

Steve Rogers stood as still as a board, back ramrod straight though energy practically vibrated from him. T'Challa couldn't help the small smile that found his lips at his friends nervous energy.

"Steve, please, all your tension has me feeling nervous." Steve forced a grin at that and ran a hand through his hair.

"I'm just… are you sure Shuri managed it?" T'Challa raised an eyebrow but the other man cut off any remark. "You're right. I'm sorry. Of course she did. If she said she did, she did. I know. I'm just…" he trailed off with a sigh, glancing up towards the ceiling.

"You best not let Shuri hear your doubting her. But I understand your concern. I promise it will be alright.  Shuri is the best at what she does. James has been out of cryo-stasis for months now, and his time with the River Tribe has more than proven his and Shuri's triumph over Hydra's machinations. Steve, your friend is back."

There's a warm, yellow-tinted light that makes everything in the small restaurant feel like stepping back in time. It doesn't help that the TV mounted to the corner is probably older than most of the people present. The images come through in black and white and every once in a while the picture warps and jumps when the signal gives way for a moment. There are only a handful of tables and at any given time, only one or two other diners. The service is slow with only the owner working nights. But the food is decent and the coffee isn't sludge. And the man hasn't questioned your presence there at 7pm every night like clockwork. The first few nights, you'd request that the channel be switched from sitcom reruns to the news. Now when you walk in, the news station is already on. It's almost like giving into a sense of normalcy, which scares you more than anything. This is not the life you'd built for yourself… but it's easy, easy and fast to give in to routine and anything can feel normal after enough time.

Which makes you believe it's approaching the point in time that you should move on. There are other places to hide out, other people who need the sort of help you can provide. And there are ways to drop completely off the grid.

But that would mean giving up the 7 o'clock news and you can't manage to do that.

So instead you retire from your work around 6 in the evening, shower to cool off from the unrelenting sunshine. In the past months, this is the first time you've settled in a place long enough to establish any semblance of a routine.

The small apartment you currently dwell in faces a busy street, an outdoor market occupies most of the land you can see from the small windows. You would be concerned about the noise but the schedule you've set for yourself has you up with the first vendors' arrival anyway. The apartment itself is sufficient. Threadbare carpet lines the single room that makes up the bedroom-kitchen-workspace, though the kitchen has a stunning mix of linoleum in shades of lime green and mustard yellow. Not that you're ever inclined to cook for yourself anymore.

After the quick cleanse, you slip into a pair light pants and a light, long sleeved shirt. You pull your hair up, slide your knife into its holster, and set to work on the disguise. Natasha taught you how to use the mesh-hologram mask years back and it had recently become a staple of your wardrobe. Gingerly you place it over your features and press the small button to activate it, obfuscating your features You shudder at the thought that you've spent more time lately with this fake face than your own. The woman in the mirror is some amalgamation of features that make you seem...well, bland. The eyes of others just sort of slide away after a quick glance. Perfect for avoiding detection.

See, escaping from the Raft left you very few options. When Steve had come to spring you and the others who'd opted to stay at Leipzig Halle to buy him and Bucky time, the authorities had acted quickly. And you went without protest, same as everyone else. Because Cap and Bucky needed it, and you were willing to pay for their (supposed) crimes. Same as everyone else.

"About damn time." It's been so long since you'd heard anything other than the loud thoughts in your head that for a moment, it feels as though Sam's voice has sprung from the ether. You scramble off your cot and stand at the door to your cell and peer into the darkness. After a moment, you really can't help the smile that cracks your dried lips. No one could mistake that figure.

The escape is quick and honestly, kind of painful. The biting wind and sea spray only work to lower the temperature further and without your normal gear, the prison uniform leaves a lot to be desired in terms of protection from the elements.

As the copter lands, it kicks up more water and you really would have laughed if not genuinely fearful for hypothermia. "When it rains, it pours." You shoot Clint a sidelong glance and he just grins at you.

The door slides open and you can feel your heart slip into your stomach. Bucky is there and your eyes meet.

But Steve is calling for you to help Wanda into the vehicle and so -as gracefully as possible when everything is half frozen and covered in water - you climb in and extend a hand to her. You jokingly offer one to Sam who smiles and then outright laughs as Scott actually accepts it. The last to board are Clint and Steve and it's close quarters for the flight to….wherever Steve is taking you. There's a moment of quietness before Clint, leaning against you, finally breaks it.

"I'm officially retired. For real this time." you playfully hit his arm and everyone seems just a breath less miserable. With that, it's decided -  you'll drop Clint on the farm and take some time to recoup there. He's quick to assure everyone that Laura doesn't mind, and really no one has met Nathaniel yet.

Everyone sort of breaks off then, hardship lending itself to affection as people huddle together. You're left awkwardly trapped between wanting to rush to Bucky and wanting to give him space with Steve. After a moment, and a gentle shove from Wanda, you approach Bucky.

The temptation to pull him into a hug and comfort him is so strong but instead you gently grab his hand. He glances at you, smiling softly though his eyes are dark and troubled.

"Buck. I'm glad you're okay." He squeezes your hand and nods, but you can tell he's miles away.

You've given up trying to order anything other than the coffee. The owner will bring whatever has inspired him that day and - so far - nothing has been disappointing. Today it appears to be some sort of soup, fresh vegetables floating in a creamy base. As you tuck in, it's then that the news flashes from local fluff to the far more reverent nightly news. The broadcast is normally done in the local language, but without your even mentioning, the owner has enabled closed captioning in English. It's not strictly necessary between a decent understanding of the local language and context, but the gesture is kind.

Tonight is the night you've been looking forward to. You're surprised the jury has come to a decision within a few days. While all signs pointed to guilty, there was so much evidence presented. Not to mention the weight that the Accords brought to the matter. Which was substantially less that the entirety of the events in Sokovia.

Helmut Zemo's trial had been going on for months at this point. The UN security council had multiple countries that wanted a piece of the man: the US, Wakanda, Sokovia, Austria…  the list went on.

His defense had sought not to prove his innocence, but instead to get some sort of bargain that counted the man insane by his grief. Like the entire plot was some long-game crime of passion. You knew all too well that while grief may have been a part of it, vengeance had consumed the man that would tear your family apart. And the deliberate thought-out nature of his crimes was irrefutable.

Which is why it wasn't too surprising when the stern looking woman from the UN on the TV announces Zemo's guilt. And his life sentence to the high security prison that you'd had the misfortune of a stay in wasn't all that surprising either.

It is surprising, however, to realize that you'd begun to cry. You wipe delicately at the tears, careful of the mask in place. Crying was bound to upset the technology so you only had a short time to pay the bill and get back to the safety of your room.

Dropping your money on the table, you rush out the door, brushing past the other patrons. The owner moves to stop you and calls after you, asking if you're okay.  Your voice wavers as you answer back.

Spending time on the Bartons' farm, seeing little Nathaniel, is enough to forget the events of the last week. Enough to feel like your version of normal. After a big breakfast with everyone, you're resting in a guest bedroom. It's early afternoon and the light filters through the lace curtains and creates a warm, sleepy feeling in the room. Just laying there, you practice relaxing each part of your body. It's a technique you picked up from sleepless nights on long missions. You're almost good enough to trick yourself into sleep at this point.

Just on the precipice between the waking world and sleep, someone lightly raps at the door. You're tempted to ignore it and just continue trying to find sleep but whoever it is knocks again and you groan and stand.  The last few days have been hell on your body and though you'd never admit it to anyone, you're sore. And tired in a way you've never been before.

You answer the door, ready to chew out the person interrupting your rest but Bucky is standing there and he looks anguished. Without a word, you gesture him in and sit down on the bed, patting the spot next to you.  Bucky sits heavily and sighs but says nothing. So neither do you, opting instead to watch the dust motes float in the sun. It's a few moments before Bucky finds his voice.

"I just wanted to...thank you, for staying behind. Hell, for even coming to help at all." His hand finds yours resting in the bed and he holds it gently.

"Bucky, come on. It was nothing." You shrug as he levels you with a hard look. "Fine, it wasn't nothing. But I've done a lot worse for things I didn't believe in half as much." Your heart clenches as you remember seeing Rhodey hit the ground. The sound has haunted your nightmares since the moment you'd heard it. "And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was, this is, the right thing to do." Bucky nods solemnly but remains quiet. You run your free hand through your hair. There is a lot more left unsaid. But you expect that the coming days, weeks, months won't lend themselves to soft declarations of… whatever it is that's tumbling around in your useless heart. So instead you let go of his hand and stand, stretching your aching shoulders.

Bucky looks up at you through the hair that hangs in his face.

"I was going to take a nap. Do you - would you want to join me?" His brows draw in and he opens his mouth- "Just sleep! I realize now… god, sorry." He actually smiles and starts to laugh and that has the small thing in your heart fluttering as laughter comes bubbling out. When the laughter subsides, he looks at you, smiling.

"Sure thing, doll."

In the rush back to your apartment, you remain as diligent as possible while trying to hold back tears. It's crushing though and your hand shakes as you unlock the front door and race up the stairs. You're fumbling worse at the door to your apartment. You manage the lock and fling the door open. Slamming it quickly, you practically dive into your bed as you deactivate the mask and toss it on your makeshift nightstand. It's been so long since you let yourself feel anything or even think about feeling anything. You'd put all of that on hold when Steve asked you to accompany him and Sam and Sharon on the mission to find Bucky. It had been years of just pushing things aside to focus focus focus on the objective. Finally, alone so far from home, that chapter of your life closes with a simple televised press conference.

Replaying the events at the airport, your fight with Tony for picking sides, Rhodey falling again and again and again in some masochistic attempt to finally make sense of it all. You lie in bed like that for hours, slowly working through your memories and feelings. It's miserable, remembering everything that you tabled for another day. And it's miserable work trying to start to work through the emotion of it all. It'd be easier to figure out a way to turn off emotionally. But if you want to continue with your aide work, you fear turning into a weeping mess out of the blue.  

So you count the good things, the things you know are mending already. A little bit of spying early on in your departure had yielded some positivity: Rhodey and Tony were working to get him mobile again. Peter, the boy spider, was back in school (and you had some choice words for Tony for involving a child in this whole ordeal). Wanda and Steve were doing peacekeeping missions. They'd told you as much before the departure from the Barton farm. They'd even invited you, but you'd started off on your career alone and found, after all your time with the Avengers, that maybe that's how you were better off. So far removed from everyone, it's easy to forget what any level of comradery does for overall well-being.

It's full dark by the time you're feeling well enough to get out of bed. There are still things that need doing before you let yourself rest. First and foremost is a shower to wash away that just-having-cried feeling. You're tempted to just stand under the spray for the rest of the night but the water is quickly shifting to ice and so you hop out, dress, and set to work on righting the mask. It was an older model that needed some maintenance after prolonged use. And getting it wet didn't help. Setting up your small worktop across the foot of the bed, you begin to tamper with the tech. Part way through your repairs, there's a knock at the door. You glance at the exposed circuitry and then to your digital alarm clock. It's only 2 in the morning and your heart drops to your stomach. Your first thought is to just say nothing - pretend not to be home - but you know the light shines under the door and the people who would come this late at night are not the sort to leave easily.

They're also not the sort to knock. With your curiosity piqued, you drop your work and tiptoe over to the door. There's no peephole, but you press your ear to it. In the near silence, you can hear what seems to be one person breathing. At least you like those odds.

The line of work you'd found yourself in meant always being armed, so you pull the short blade from your hip and wait.

They knock again.

"Y/N?" There's a pause and you can distinctly hear someone shuffling closer to the door. They're listening to you as intently as you are them. There's a soft sigh and then:

"Y/N". It's Steve. He's… Bucky's back."

In the sun-warmed liminal space between reality and dreams, you lay suspended. The person next you had been the same until a moment ago. They shift and you could be awake, but you cling to this empty place. Softly, almost under his breath, Bucky begins to speak.

"Steve says T'Challa might be able to help, to fix the mess Hydra left in my head. And maybe he can. But I don't want to wait around to find out….Hydra...they're everywhere and I can't fight Steve again. I won't. And I can't see you hurt again, much less because I… lose control." His flesh hand dances lightly over a bruise on your cheek. It's turning yellow at the edges, but both Bucky and you know that hit had been the Winter Soldier's. And you don't blame him. You blame Zemo. You blame the fucking morons in the government. But not Bucky, never him. If there was a poster child for victim of circumstance, it'd be him.

In the hanger, with his arm secured in that press, you'd tried to joke that Natasha had done a lot worse to you in training… but the horrified look never left his eyes.

"So. I'm going back into cryo." Your breath hitches and you know he's known the entire time you've been awake, listening. "And you're the last person I wanted to tell. I almost don't want to because-" He pauses, his hand brushing down your arm to entwine your fingers and his. "Because being near you feels like the me, from before. Just a part of that and God, I don't want to lose it." That feeling of wanting to say something, to relay that warm fluttering thing your heart. But your own fear, and your concern over his well-being, keeps your lips sealed. Instead you squeeze his hand gently and sit in heavy silence.

The next morning Steve and Bucky take off. Wanda will be off this afternoon to follow them but everyone knows that whatever T'Challa is doing to help Bucky, that's between him and Steve.

Last night, Steve had offered you and Wanda both a way to help. With the Accords still in place, they would be operating under the radar but there were so many places they could do good. Wanda had agreed without any hesitancy. You had declined, joking about your selfish nature. Steve had given you his best sales pitch but you'd stopped believing in the ability to be on a team the moment you'd faced off against Tony. Steve had been the first person to give you a chance to redeem yourself, that collector of broken people. And you'd proved you were willing to do anything for him. But the time had come for the turning over of a new leaf. So in the dead of night, you'd packed away some of your meager possessions - mostly things you knew you'd need in the coming months.

Just before first light, you'd slipped from the Barton's front door and headed into the woods. You waited, hidden just beyond the treeline to watch Steve and Bucky leave. Watched as the light in your room had turned on, as Bucky had stepped into your empty guest room. The small thing in your chest ached as you played voyeur to this equally small moment. You leave before you can give yourself a reason not to.

In what feels like a matter of moments, you're in some next-level quinjet. Steve explains its on loan from T'Challa which you take to mean please don't play with anything. The flight is surprisingly brief and Steve is quick to warn you that Wakanda is not what you imagine. And he's right, when you pass whatever shield surrounds the city, your jaw drops. Having spent so much time off the grid, Wakanda is practically a technology overload. Steve laughs a rich belly laugh at your shocked face.

You're jittering with nervous energy as you touch down. The entire trip, you dedicated your time to both worrying about seeing T'Challa again and worrying about seeing Bucky. Steve had tried to reassure you - Yes, Bucky asked for you by name. - Yes, T'Challa had forgiven whatever had transpired between them. - Yes, he was sure.

It did not really prepare you for the initial shock of leaving the jet's bay door. T'Challa stands there, the portrait of regal composure. Behind him stands the statuesque Dora Milaje that Natasha almost fought with at the UN Council meeting. Next to him, a young woman who is most definitely whispering to him as he swats her away gently. Siblings, you think to yourself.  Before anyone can get a word in, the young woman interrupts.

"This is Barnes' woman?" She turns to her brother. "And she's the one that kicked your ass, brother?" You're caught between mortification and giving in to the temptation to laugh. She turns back to you and smiles, extending a hand. "I've been looking forward to meeting you!" Her enthusiasm is infectious and you're suddenly smiling as you shake hands.

"Likewise…?"

"Shuri. You should try and hit him again next time he's suited up. Actually - twice, hit him twice." Her grin has taken on an excited, if a bit scary, note and you shake your head.

"I'm not sure I'll find the opportunity. I think our differences have been settled." T'Challa smiles and nods.

"Shuri, perhaps save harassing our guests until they've been here for longer than a few seconds." He gestures to lead your entire group away from where you've landed and into their home. You follow behind Steve and T'Challa, listening to them banter a bit. Shuri has fallen into step with you.

"Since you won't go toe to toe again, you can at least watch this." She taps her bracelet precisely and something akin to a video pops up. In it she's baiting the king into hitting a dummy and when he lands the hit, he's propelled backwards. You laugh genuinely at his expression and Shuri laughs along with you.

"And you would have subjected me to that? We just met!" You feign indignation.

"I tried it on the Captain and he said the same thing when I showed him the video. He also tried not to laugh." You grin at her.

"Steve said it was all your handiwork helping Bucky." Shuri smiles proudly, knowingly.

"Of course." You conversation ends abruptly as you enter a stunning, technical marvel of a lab. As you round the pillar that sits in the center of the room, your heart jumps into your throat. Bucky's standing there, fiddling with what appears to be his new arm. It's a moment before he recognizes that he's no longer alone.

Bucky glances up at his new visitors. The new arm has been working perfectly, though it hasn't been on long. The dull ache that had always accompanied the arm installed by Hydra has disappeared with this new tech. He suspects Shuri's done something mind-boggling to accomplish this but he knows better than to ask. She'd either explain in painful, incomprehensible detail or laugh at him and share nothing. He sees her behind her brother, smiling widely. For a moment, he's worried something is coming. That smile has come to represent mischief afoot to him.

Instead, he finally sees why everyone is staring at him expectantly. Y/N is standing there, her face a mix of awe and adoration. In two strides, he's across the room. Steve moves out of the way, and Bucky can't help himself - he wraps her in a tight hug. It's been almost three years since he's last seen Y/N, since she set in him a spark that maybe, just maybe he could return to something like his life before the Winter Soldier. He pulls back to look at her more closely. She's smiling, tears in the corners of her eyes and Bucky is sure this is the moment he's been waiting for. He feels almost weightless as he leans down to press his lips to her. Shuri's sudden wolf whistle has Y/N laughing as she pulls away, smiling even wider now. She looks up at him through her lashes, grinning stupidly as she jokes:

"Hey - long time, no see."
