the biology of slime rancher

my friend @chickennuggetonastick and i are extremely, super duper normal about the slime rancher video games and we have developed a lot of speculative headcanons about the universe!! here are just some of them so far: SLIME BASICS

Slimes are a taxon of alien lifeforms native to the Far, Far Range. They are generated from the strange slimy substance of the Slime Sea, and new slimes either emerge from the ground via Slime Sea liquid deposits, or they emerge from the sea itself. They're made of a mineral-and-water based sludge and don't yet have a confirmed method of reproduction, though they're very numerous and many species seem to be specialized for specific diets and environments. Speaking of diets, slimes do seek out and metabolize food, but not for the same reasons that Earth animals do—all slimes are actually slowly crystallizing over time, and in order to maintain their goopy state, they have to eat. Metabolizing food items provides the slime energy and the building blocks for their bodies to continue making slime material, but most importantly, the chemical process releases heat, keeping the slime warm and reducing the rate of crystallization.

The crystallization never actually stops, though, so slimes need to eat regularly or they will "petrify" into a solid, dormant state.

Dousing a petrified slime with water will briefly return it to its goopy state and give it a chance to get a bite to eat. (This also can explain why spraying hungry largos in-game delays the time it takes for them to go feral.)

Slimes' bodies also compartmentalize the crystallizing parts of their bodies into large chunks and occasionally expel them; these are plorts, and as all ranchers know, they're useful for humans and can be sold for lots of money.

HOW DO SLIMES EAT?

All slimes need to do to get food into their systems is engulf it (kind of like an amoeba). Many slimes have evolved mouthparts or teeth, but these don't actually aid in the processing of the food; in carnivorous slimes, they're used to keep moving prey like chickens in place for digestion, and many fruit-eating slimes use their mouthparts to remove fruit from trees for ease of engulfing.

Feral slimes are very hungry slimes that have already begun to partially crystallize (this is why all feral slimes have "teeth", even if they did not have them before going feral. The teeth are sharp deposits of crystal). They attack anything in sight even if they're not carnivorous because they're super desperate to keep themselves from going dormant. 

This loss of rational thinking is what may lead feral slimes to ingest plorts of different types, which transforms them into tarrs.

TARRS

The tarr transformation in a slime completely transforms and mutates the original slime's anatomy. The slime's membrane will no longer be tolerant to water, and dousing a tarr in water or throwing it into the slime sea will dissolve its membrane entirely, leaving behind the slime material of the original slime. This material will, over time, eventually emerge from the ground or the slime sea as a new slime that does not retain any of the memories, experiences, or personality it had before becoming a tarr.

Bahamas 2023. Pre departure. We leave March 5 to the Bahamas

Lots of work before we go play in the Bahamas. In January we took the boat 10 miles north to a marina in Key Largo. The primary goal was to replace a Dripless Shaft Seal as preventive maintenance. This can only be done out of the water. The bottom paint was holding up pretty well. But now was the time to go ahead and redo the bottom paint. Previous paint was an ablative paint colored black. We used the same brand of ablative paint but changed the color to blue this time. Changing color helps you tell how far you might be sanding or how much paint has been scrubbed off over the years.

Nancy cleaned and waxed the hull once the bottom paint was done.

Due to tides we spent two nights at anchor waiting to get into the marina. I used this time to periodically spray PB Blaster on the rusty bolts holding the prop shaft to the transmission.

Here I have decoupled the prop shaft in preparation of removing the old Dripless shaft seal.

The boat has a new bottom paint and is shined and ready to splash.

We spent two nights on the anchor. Yoga on the foredeck in the morning.

The big addition this year for cruising the Bahamas is a water maker. We bought a Schenker 30 Zen water maker. It should make 30 liters an hour, or 7.9 gallons an hour. We were very frugal with our water usage last year. But our hygiene suffered, and the boat would not get salt washed off unless it rained. It was getting pretty crusty. You will never get a watermaker to be cost effective. But it will allow you to cruise in places where water is not available. Getting older this will save some wear and tear on us. “Jugging water” is strenuous and can be dangerous during the transfer from dinghy to boat.

Checking the dinghy engine which has not been run since last year in the Bahamas. It does run but is rough. Changed spark plugs but that did not fix the issue. Next thing to check is the carburetor. Starting with the easiest and least invasive, then digging deeper. After tearing down the carburetor multiple times and putting it back together before testing. I got it down to 20 minutes start to finish. It seems to be working but until we use it for a day locally, I will not have any confidence in it.

I needed professional help getting the electrical lines run for the watermaker. My mechanic Marcel finished that up Sunday February 26. By that evening I had lowered the actual watermaker down the hatch and laid it in place. Very little remains to be done now. Until we test run the watermaker and check for leaks the boat is completely in disarray. To access the bilge area for the intake and waterpump the aft cabin mattress has to be pulled out into the main cabin. Once we pressure test the watermaker and put the mattresses back, then we can start doing the final provisioning of the boat.

The Schenke Zen 30 is bolted down and pressure test on March 1. Now we can put the mattresses back into the aft cabin. Which allows us to start moving around the cabin and putting in all the provisions.

Nancy is drinking the out put from the watermaker. Our little multimeter tester shows great water. Nancy does the ultimate taste test, and the lagoon water passes the test. Absolutely amazing that we can turn yucky harbor saltwater into fresh drinking water.

While we are getting ready to leave March 4 (Saturday), Nancy’s relatives are dealing with a blizzard in Fargo N.D.. This time of year we are in the middle of “Spring Low tides”, we could not leave if we wanted too since the channel depth is so low.

A local friend and his wife, left a few days earlier in their Catamaran but a navigation component failed. So they had their replacement AIS shipped to our house on Wednesday. We will try and meet up with them south of Georgetown Exuma a week or so after we leave.

Saturday morning at daybreak on the 4 th, we navigated out the channel at our house. Very leisurely sail 5 miles at 3 kts. where we anchored on the back side of Tavernier Key.

While at anchor I set the “Jack lines” in place. Our Jack line is a web belt 3/4” wide rated to 4,200 breaking strength. It runs from the very back of the boat to the very front of the boat down both sides. If we have to go on deck ANY time when it is dark while underway. We tether ourselves to the boat. If we are underway and seas are rough we will also tether ourselves, via the jack lines to the boat. Nancy has an Inflatable Life Jacket and a Kong tether. Since I will be the one to handle any problems on deck. I wear a foam life Jacket that served me will in Water Tribe events. It has 2 knifes, flares, signal mirror, VHF radio, whistle, multiple lights, strobe and a Personal Locator Beacon. I wear a Kong tether and a sailing harness under the life jacket. If sailing at night we both tether into short jacklines that I installed in the cockpit.

Alarm is set for 0400, we will depart the anchorage and head perpendicular to the reef. Hopefully avoiding all of the lobster trap buoys and lines. Once we hit 250’ depth we will be clear of all traps. Then we will head for South Riding Rock. So about 70 miles across the Gulf Stream on a rumb line of 078 degrees. It would be nice cross on to the Bahama Bank during daylight but not mandatory.

Seas are predicted to be 1 foot with a 10 sec. period between them. Which makes for a calm crossing but not great for sailing. I assume we will motorsail the majority of the way. Another 56 miles puts us at the mouth of North West Channel. Great place to anchor Monday night. Then a quick 20 mile run to Morgan Wells, Andros Island Tuesday.

After clearing customs we will work on getting a Wi-Fi hot spot device and can then pick up internet. Till then don’t expect to get any updates until Wednesday at the earliest.

Ez loves to spend the whole day with your daughter. He loves Lola more than anything in this world.

EZ comes from nowhere, taking his daughter as if she actually is a baby. For god's sake. But she's having a lot of fun seeing how her father always wins every single battle.

And he also does it when you reply how much you love him, how lucky you're for finding him in life, and how much you get melted every time you find them sleeping together in the sofa after a long day waiting for you to come from the hospital.

Slime Rancher Ninjago AU (kinda)

Lloyd: On the range exchange, he only requests fruits and sometimes plorts. (I'm planning on making his sprite soonish.) He offers his range exchange up after you reach the moss blanket, which holds his most prized resource. (Mint mangos, but you didn't hear that from me.) He raises exclusively honey slimes, though he usually makes the pure slimes into largos to get more valuable plorts. his favorite honey largos to ranch are rad honeys, but also honey hunters. He just thinks they’re adorable (and, as you might be able to tell, there is no line between cute and dangerous in his mind.)  He used to live with his parents on the ranch, but his father had radiation poisoning and burns, and it was taking a number on him, so his dad went back to earth to get treatment for the huge amounts of radiation that he had been exposed to from wrangling the slimes. His mother on the other hand, was studying the ancient ruins until she pretty much lived there. He was maybe 10 when he was first left to fend for himself on the ranch. He was looking for his mom in the ancient ruins when a little... incident happened, causing the time around him to speed up so exponentially that only a few seconds of real time had gone by, but he was suddenly sixteen when the time dilation stopped. Since then, he has had an exponential distaste for the ancient ruins and quantum slimes.

Zane: On the range exchange, his requests are quite rare, and are usually for plorts and the occasional silver parsnip order. He raises mosaic slimes, and dabbles a bit in slime science, you find out right away that he's a robot in his first starmail to you. He was an android programmed by an old rancher, even older than Hobson or Thora, that just couldn’t do his own job anymore. His creator had a husband with him that had died a few years prior to Zane’s creation, but Zane always viewed him as his father as well.  The old rancher taught him how to ranch and wrangle slimes, and how to take care of them correctly before he passed on. Zane always had an affinity for the cold, but after seeing his first mosiac, he just couldn’t resist ranching the little guys. He was fireproof after all. 

Cole: He only requests food on the range exchange, any types of food really! His orders evolve as you unlock areas accordingly (briar hens in the moss blanket and oca ocas when you unlock the indigo quarry are just a few examples.). He requests mostly veggies, with some orders for meat or fruit on the side. Though he says it's for the slimes, you can't help but suspect that he sometimes eats some of it himself! he raises rock slimes and crystal slimes. He never asks for mint mangoes though, and when asked, he says something about them tasting like toothpaste. Ever since he first heard of The Far, Far Range, it had always been his dream to go there. His father, however, had different plans for him. His father had always wanted his son to follow in his footsteps and become a performer, and wouldn’t even listen to cole’s protests as he forced him through dance classes, saying it was going to help him in the future.  As soon as he could work, he worked his ass off at the best job he could find, saving it all up for that life changing trip. Every cent of the money he was given went into his fund to go and live on the far far range.  As soon as he finished highschool, he said adios to his dad, taking only his giant jar of money and his climbing gear to start ranching.

Kai: He usually asks for plorts, probably to make himself a spot of money on the side to his jobs of taming and exploring the glass desert and raising fire slimes (causing the occasional ask for burnable items) He was actually the first ever person born on the far far range, born to a young couple making their mark on the world by only ranching slimes that they knew would be easily accessed by the poor. He was soon joined by his little sister, Nya. When he was twelve, their parents disappeared, leaving him and Nya to take care of the ranch. 

jay: oh god does this guy make millions. He primarily works for mochi gathering quicksilver plorts, and as a side job with a hint of danger, he likes taking care of boom largos. at the first sign of a lucky or gold slime, he's off! he's also a walking slimepedia jesus. He's often cooped himself up at home when not working for mochi or chasing some rare slimes doing slime science! he mostly requests slime science materials (primordy oil, that kinda stuff) and plorts. Jay was the offspring of a rancher and a reality TV show 

nya: she has some of the best trades in the game, even though some of them can be tricky, and it's worth time and effort completing her trades! She trades for slightly rare slimes (rad, crystal, and quantum, for example) and reimburses you with rare items and a good sum of newbucks! She, like her brother, raises the unconventional slime types of puddle slimes, but she's easily the most risky out of the group, because she has mastered The Wilds, though unlike odgen, she doesn't enjoy the kookadoba. she's also the one to call when a tarr outbreak occurs, as she's modified her vacpac to have a spray gun mode where it sprays water.

pixal: on the range exchange, she requests everything related to the ancient ruins, including phase lemons, quantum slimes, along with quantum plorts. she, along with her father cyrus research the ancient ruins, and they also dabble in slime science. she and zane are acquainted, mostly because their ranches are so close to eachother. she is the master of keeping quantum slimes. She is the robot assistant, and kind of daughter, of cyrus borg. They have a ranch near the ancient ruins, as most of their studies surround them.  She also has a bit of a reason to believe that the ones who created the ruins in the first place were humanoid in form and in thinking process, though she has little proof of it.

      Ollie chuckles as he sets down the mask and takes off his cut-off shirt. He was tall and semi-built, mostly in his arms and legs; his chest was flat like a cheeseboard. He was built but skinny; he looked like an optical illusion without a shirt on. Ollie was funny about it, saying that he looked like a twig, and making fun of himself. Some girl in my class had told me that he looked like a stoner with the long hair and distorted face. His "distorted' face wasn't imperfect at all; his jaw was square but appeared narrow because it was so structured, and his long hair created shadows around his cheeks.        I was different in body type: I have curves and more defined muscles, a big chest, and like him no abs. I don't mind though, just more of me to love.       "I wish I was as tan as you, the only color I get is on my shoulders, and then I get even more freckles."        I laugh and shake my head as I pull a fuzz ball off my pink bikini bottoms.
