#dog breeds of thedas

I give you a new project based on my recent research into the lore:
Dog Breeds of Thedas
These are the only two I’ve completed so far, and I admit that if there are any more to follow… they will be completely made up. But they will be based on lore from the DA universe and knowledge that I possess from my actual education in dog training. It’s unfortunate that the only one with real codex entries is the Mabari.

Lets Talk About Nugs
Okay so I'm on the nug train of thought here now that we have Dalish eating nugs in dao. So some fun facts about nugs and what we know about them.
They're found both subterranean and on the surface. Their codices describe how they originate from subterranean areas (the Deep Roads) but also inhabit the surface despite having skin so thin it often sunburns. This is reinforced in how we see them running around topside all over Inquisition in Haven, the Emerald Grove, and just everywhere. The common nug is so common on the surface, Kirkwall carried out the Battle of the Squealing Plains (aka nug war) because they were deemed a noxious vermin thought to carry the blight (they don't).
Dwarves (surface and Orzammar), Fereldans, Orlesians, and Dalish eat them. An Orlesian might, but one also runs the risk of eating a noblewomans pet by accident and it is insinuated that is part of why they aren't so common on the Orlesian table.
Nugs eat everything from insects (with roof beetles being a favorite), worms, mushrooms, anything they can find on the cavern floor or in your pantry, and even limestone and metals. They're described as a voracious omnivore and their diet really shows it.
They're cousins to the Greater Nuggalope and may be related to the tusket.
Their main natural predators include deepstalkers and giant spiders underground and just about every carnivore topside.
Outside of food their stomach, skin, and fat are used for a variety of craftable items.
They use their pointed snouts for digging, are nearly blind, and are hairless.
Despite being called "small", their dao depiction makes them the size of a medium dog and is echoed by the Inquisition models where nugs are roughly 21" / 54 cm at the shoulder. A medium-sized dog has the height of 16-22" / 41-56 cm at the shoulder.
They are prolific breeding animals despite the high predation rates and being described as poorly adapted for non-temperate environments.
As I work on my food project as well as the Thedas bestiary I was trying to decide the role that they fill and honestly, they seem to fill the same role one would expect a pig, vulture, or the like to fill. Cleaning up the various scraps left around the Deep Roads and being rather opportunistic in whether they'll deviate from their insect diet to plant material. We have no mention of them eating meat, so I wouldn't think they were opportunistic carnivores either.
And while this may seem obvious, I've been seeing a lot of similarities to naked-mole rats. Not counting the skin or the shared subterranean home. But from the fact that the game seems to insinuate that they are at least highly resistant to the blight; perhaps like High Dragons. Much like naked mole rats have unusual longevity and are resistant to many age related disease as well as cancer. Couple that with the fact that nugs seem to live in groups; we see this in the cave system in Crestwood, and the existence of the nug king and his court.

CONFESSION:
As a dog lover, vet tech and dragon age fan, I would definitely love to see more dog species in the next game.  Don't get me wrong I love the Mabari but its time to see something new. And I like the legend about the Mabari abandoning their Tevinter masters so it does not make sense for them to be in Tevinter.
I think Tevinter should have a breed inspired by the Cirneco dell’Etna.  They could be the breed that replaced the Mabari or something.  I just think Thedas should have more than one species of dog

What other dog breeds are present in Thedas besides the Mabari?
I need more dog lore. What kind of hoity toity dogs are prancing around Orlais? Are there some hearty wolfhounds in the Marches?
I just need some original dog content! You can't just give us one good boi!!

You know what I don't get about Qunari?
Im Dragon age inq the bull mentions that the tamas bred qunaris like thedas breds dogs ect for specific roles.
Yet tamas still have to figure out to what role you fit before you are 12?
I mean if some ideology sees nothing wrong with breeding it's population like dogs with a specific purpose in mind (which afak happened in a certain fascist country at a much smaller and failed scale) then why is the nurture aspect still acknowledged at all?
If some boy whose father is the hulk in military and mother the hulk of what? Worker class? bred for some military role or (worker class because sexist division and they couldn't know he'll be a boy), why let him be part of the priest class if he shows interest in learning and teaching, spying more than fighting? Did I understand it right? What was the purpose of breeding him into the role of a soldier?
Iron Bull is part of a priest class but you can't tell me that being larger than his peers doesn't mean he was originally bred to be in the military.
They divide by sex out of sexist reasons only allow the fewest exceptions ever but somehow this doesn't extend to their logic that someone being bred to be a soldier could never be good enough of a priest member?
I know it's fantasy yet I can't help but feel like it's pretty unplausible to have a large humanoid population reproduce like that anyways, perhaps that's why they fled to the south because the average kossith actually doesn't want to live in a beehive.
It's pretty clear that the Qunari at first only just served as the ottoman empire against the Christian Europe that is thedas, the qunari representing the exaggerated different way of life that threatens the way of live of thedas. Otherwise they would have been more explored and had more intrinsic logic
Though I do think that the personal freedom vs. control argument is bullshit since thedas is mostly feudalism, or not?
GOD UR RIGHT !! IT LITERALLY MAKES NOT SENSE !!

The Storm Coast is in Orlais and Crestwood is by Lothering.
I don’t care what you say, Inquisition is a fib. Think about it, Iron Bull is stationed in Orlais and that is where most of his work is.
Crestwood is said to be taking in refugees from the Blight shortly after Lothering was hit. Then there are the maps.
War Table Map in Inquisition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Map the Devs had pinned up as noted in BioWare: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also yes, I see Haven is placed down by the O in mountain. They also have Skyhold lower and on the Orlesian side of the map which is interesting isn’t it?)
ALSO LET’S POINT OUT THERINFALL BEING UP NEAR THE CIRCLE. Wonder why... it’s almost like it makes sense to have a seeker fortress close to the people they’re suppose to be over seeing.
Tumblr media
Now I know things change during development. But I sit firmly on my opinion that The Storm Coast and Crestwood aren’t where they’re placed on the war table tokens. The Storm Coast is in Orlais. Crestwood is by Lothering.

Fenris/Hawke
SFW 3, 10
NSFW 1, 4
(I hope I'm remembering the numbers correctly and these are the qustions I want to ask :p)
3- Who fixes the vehicle after a breakdown?
I'm so tempted to say Hawke because smeared in motor oil would be such a hot look for him, but honestly? Neither of them. They have to call someone. Hawke is a gay who can't do math and Fenris is a bisexual who can't drive and between the two of them they'd stare at the smoking husk of the vehicle and call Carver to come diagnose the problem. (The problem is Fenris burnt out the clutch trying to learn to do a 3 point turn.)
10-Any pets? Or plants?
In a modern AU they work with a breed specific foster program for Rottweilers or Boxers or Staffies some other massive silly dog breed. They have foster failed more than once.
In Thedas, Post-Kirkwall, Hawke and his Mabari are inseparable until she dies of old age. Hawke is too heartbroken to ever bond that way with another Mabari. When he and Fenris settle down, Fenris acquires a small but tenacious herding-type dog to keep their chickens in check. This dog never actually gets a chance to do that job because Hawke immediately adopts it as a house pet and treats it like a little purse dog. Fenris is too charmed to mind.
Fenris is a magnet for miserable angry barn cats who seem to seek him out and insert themselves into his life despite his insistence on being a dog person. He secretly likes them very much, particularly the gray cat that stalks the rats in his Hightown mansion. He calls her Catus. Hawke insists this is not a proper name, but his dog's name is Baby so what does he know?
NSFW Below the cut
1-How often do they have sex, if at all?
As often as they can at first. As Kirkwall is falling to shit, the only stress release they have for a time is each other. Then they have to flee Kirkwall and suddenly there's a war going on. They're constantly on the run and have no guaranted bed or privacy. They make due with quickies but it isn't the same as having a safe space to enjoy each other. Once they're finally able to settle down, they settle into a rhythm that suits them. That rhythm is mostly set by Fenris' sex drive and picks up in the summers when Hawke refuses to be fully dressed for even a moment.
4-Oddest place they’d have sex?
If Hawke is left in the Fade: The Fade.
Other than that they tend to keep it to private spaces. Fenris has a particular enjoyment for crawling under Hawke's desk to suck him off. And Hawke has burnt at least one meal because the appeal of fucking Fenris on the kitchen table outweighed making sure that pots didn't boil over.
The one thing they can't resist is big empty beaches. They always regret it after. Sand in odd places, hair crunchy with salt, or stinking like lakewater. But they had their first date on the beach and they're both sappy and romantic about it. Fenris pretends it's a massive inconvenience, but he's nearly always the one dragging Hawke into the waves.

Sending Crystal
A quiet curse came from Dorians sending crystal. Luckily this time I was while he was in the study and not on the Magisterium floor. At least last time while he was on the floor, he was the only one who could hear it. Every time he would start his speech he tried so hard not to laugh as a disgruntle little curse coming from his chest.
“Having fun there, Amatus?”
“Fucking so much--” There was an abrupt stop, a twang of a bow, “Maker’s tits, fuck off... Not, not at you Dorian! I’m just--”
“I thought you were going to tell me if you were in the middle of something? I know you’ve been busy-”   Arn had recently got some odd jobs with the Jenny’s. Although officially he was retired and living between Kirkwall and a place down in Ferelden. Unofficially he was running all over Thedas, spending some weeks in Kirkwall, or most of his time between the Jenny’s and in a Sanctuary for former Templars ran by a Former Templar and Inquisitor.
“I promise this wasn’t planned. I got some time away, you know. Bandits see someone they wanna attack. No Cupcake put that down, you’re not taking that—okay but let me—The dog found some pretty cloth and now won't let it go. Cupcake you can keep it, just not in your mouth.”
Dorian let out a chuckle. He was yet to meet the fabled Cupcake, a mabari of sorts. While Arn described her as a ‘good girl’, Varric and Cullen had both described her as ‘a massive beast. Too large to call a dog, and a touch shorter than a great bear.’ “She likes pretty things then?”
“Oh yes. She keeps finding strange shiny things while we are out. She has a lovely collar at the moment. I’ll guess you’ll see at some point.” They had talked about seeing each other soon, the magisterium who have its break in a few months. He had book passage down to the South. Spend Wintersend in the bitter Ferelden cold. Not quite what he was looking forward too, but the company would be something.
“It won't be long now,” Dorian comforted. He heard the Mabari bark.
“Yes Cupcake, that’s Dorian. Yes, you’ll get to meet him, are you excited?” Arn asked his dog. Cupcake barked and jumped. “Did you know I’ve had about 4 people in the last 2 weeks ask me if they could breed with Cupcake. Sure I’m flattered, but I don’t know her history. I wrote to Elena and she said that Cullen said that you have to find out the dogs kin and shit before you let them breed, and I really don’t know. I met this guy in the woods.”
“Yes, you’re friend Al. Any chance you’ve seen him again?”
“Not last month while I was around there. Next time I’m that way I’ll ask about him. I don’t think she’s like, ill or anything I just don’t want people coming back and yelling to me about dog things I don’t know anything about.” Arn complained.
“Yes, well you know those Ferelden’s, very stuff about their dogs.”
“How is Snookums by the way?” Arn asked
“Her name is not ‘Snookums’.” Dorian protested.
“We’ll she didn’t answer to Vivienne.”
“She’s a snake...”
“She always perks up when I call her name.” Arn boasted.
Dorian let out a deep sigh. “Maybe it's just you animal magnetism.”
Arn chuckled loudly. “Anyway, how is Tevinter? Still as hot as ever?”
Dorian went on about the dragging sessions in the Magisterium, who was dead from last time, new faces and new blood. Same old same old.
“Oh Dorian,” Arn interjected. “I need to send Cupcake to you, I have to run a few jobs and it’s no place for Cupcake. Is it okay if I send her up? I know Bull is going that way, I have a friend who can pick her up from there and take her into town, if that’s okay. If not I can send her down south with the Rutherford’s. And I mean either one is fine.”
“Of cause,” Dorian wasn’t sure what he was going to do with the Mabari, specially where he was staying. But it would be nice to have some company. “Are you getting Erik to take her in?”
“Yeah, he’ll have some stuff for you as well. You know Erik, he’s good. Thomas is pouting about the whole thing but he just needs to get out more. 40 years in the Circle will kinda make you a bit cranky” Dorian smiled, Thomas was a crusty older gentleman, but Thomas and Erik had never left each other's side since the early days of the Inquisition. “Oh, I won't be able to talk while on the Job, but I’ll at least try to find time once it's over to call.”
“I expected that much.”
“Wonderful! I have to get going but I’ll call you before the job!”
Dorian ended the call. Arn looked down to Cupcake. Bull was in view with the Chargers. “I’ll be a week behind her, she wont be too much trouble.” Arn explained to Bull. Cupcake already started dancing around Krem and Bull’s Kadan.
“She’ll be fine. I didn’t know Mabari could be Qunari sized?”
“I know right? I hope Dorian doesn’t mind.”
“He’s capable.” Bull laughed. “Does he know you’re coming?”
“Nope.” He popped the p. “Erik is gonna keep quiet. He knows where it is, he’ll send me directions.”
“You wont be able to miss it, it’s the most pompous looking house in the street.” Bull chuckled.

CONFESSION:
While I wouldn't mind seeing the Mabari again, I would much rather have a different dog breed in the next game. There has to be more than one breed of dog in Thedas.

i want to write a fic where a modern-day character brings her dog with her, but I'm unsure if the mabari are the only existing dog breed in Thedas. Or maybe its the only warhound? I feel like there are probably other non-extinct dogbreeds--in your readings have you come across names of specific breeds besides mabari? I wonder if they'll recognize my oc's dog being a dog right away or think its like a undiscovered creature...
There are plenty of dog breeds! Mabari are just an infamous breed for their intelligence and being near revered in Ferelden.
I can recall off hand that Leliana mentions in Orlais, toy dogs are popular pets. There’s also non-mabari dogs in DA:O as ambient creatures. I don’t really know dog breeds, but here’s the model if you could take some guesses:
