Shrek Kung-Fu Princesses Doll Line

For #InternationalWomansDay here's a bit of doll history! DreamWorks made a line of dolls in conjecture with Shrek fhe Third of Fiona & her princess friends. However the designs were different from their cinematic counterparts. They didn't even bother to add Doris >:(

I assume this was done to avoid a lawsuit from the mouse. Still, it's kinda hilarious that Dreamworks made their princess line when the entire point of the shrek series is to poke fun at Disney's ultra-corporatism.

First Fiona. Her doll form is her human form and included a bust of her Ogre form to change heads. She has her green gown which is the iconic item in her wardrobe. Her face does NOT look accurate to her human appearance in the movie!

Next we have Rapunzel. Her doll keeps the long golden hair but in a different style. In the movie she wore a yellow&red dress while the doll's dress is pink. Odd, given the other two princesses wear pink. Yellow would've stood out more. I got her & Cindy mixed up!

Third is Cinderella. Like with Rapz her doll form retains the blond and replaces her blue dress with pink. Funny the Disney version had its version of cindy wear a pink dress briefly.

Fourth is Sleeping Beauty! Her doll has a blue dress while the movie wears green&white. They also have different shades of brown. I guess they didn't want two girls to wear the same color. Also a bit of irony Disney S.B. wore a blue dress, and pink but never green.

Finally we have *sighs* Snow White. Honestly except for Immigrant Song she was my least favorite she came off as a total witch! But that's a rant for another time. Of the dolls she's the most accurate in terms of physical features. However her dress is dark pink, and her hair is long instead of short. Movie Snow wore red&purple. I think they should've went with that or have her wear entirely purple to fill in for Doris.

Speaking of, Doris was very much a main part of the group! It was Rapunzel who betrayed the team (for a guy no less!). My guess: to avoid spoiling the film. Given the films Anti Disney/status quo message including a Doris would've helped. To see someone not consisted attractive by society's standards get a glamorous doll of her own would be a huge step for the time! Alas, they had to play by the rules.

One can only imagine if DW revisit the Princesses & try again. Hope they actually make them accurate with their unique qualities including doris (& Lillian too! More older woman dolls please!). With success of The Last Wish, this may be one dream that might come true!

Confession blogs tend to attract unwanted drama and end up on blocklists because of the general negativity they tend to attract and not censoring names means they show up in search so if you're talking about a character or personality, you'll inadvertently be talking to some fans who follow tags. I'm really hoping dollect opens a forum not just a discord so we can share tutorials and discussion threads there soon.

Dollblr tends to be friendly, encourage all levels of doll crafting especially the messy progress of slowly getting better at it and also like to highlight older dolls, thrift finds and fix ups, while also enjoying newly released dolls.

It's less polished, more chill, we take the time to mull over discussion (you can make posts non rebloggable if you don't want it leaving your circle of mutuals).

We're a more collaborative version of instagram with blogs that tend to have a bit of all sorts of interests including dolls. (you can follow by tag in rss readers like feedly if you're only interested in my doll posts for example).

Hope you find a new home that suits you whether it's here insta or reddit and that the dolltwt community doesn't get too split. 💚💚💚

A Doll's Mandate

“Bye! See you next time! Oh, and don’t forget, the tea party is at 1:30 this week!” the doll cried from the doorway, their arm waving vigorously. Their friend turned back with a smile and a wave of its own until it crested over the hill and disappeared beyond the horizon. Satisfied, the doll ducked back inside and closed the door with a gentle click.

“Oh? Your new dollfriend’s headed home already?” their Witch asked from her seat in the adjacent parlor.

“Yes, Miss. The hour was getting late and it wanted to get home before dark. It’s not a doll though, Miss. It’s just a person.”

“It’s… what?” The Witch sat dumbstruck at this correction, her head cocked to the side while the wheels in her head slowly turned, attempting to process this new information.

Her doll started excitedly bouncing on her heels at the sight, exclaiming, “Oh, hold that pose, Miss! It’s so rare for something to so thoroughly dispel your typical air of bravado! Doll simply must get a picture.”

The Witch turned to her doll, asking, “It’s… not a doll…?”

“No, Miss. It’s just a person.” “But… it uses it...”

“Yes, Miss. It switched over to it/its a while back. It says it just makes them feel better.”

“Ah! So it is a doll then,” the Witch stated decidedly, thinking the matter resolved and settling back into her armchair.

“No, Miss. It’s just a person,” the doll corrected once more.

“Now I’m terribly confused…” she said, leaning forward. “Isn’t its name Chrysanthemum?” the Witch asked pointedly. “That’s a doll name, if ever I’ve heard one.”

“Yes, Miss, it is.”

“And it’s not a doll?”

“No, Miss. It’s just a person.”

“And it picked that name out for itself?” “Yes, Miss, it did.”

“And it’s not a doll?”

“No, Miss. It’s just a person.”

Abandoning the back and forth, the Witch just started shooting her questions at the doll rapid fire. “But what about the dress? And the fake key on its back? And the way it habitually makes ticking noises? You’re telling me despite all of that, it’s just a person?”

“Yes, Miss. That is what doll is saying.”

“Clearly it wants to be a doll, doesn’t it?”

“Oh! Almost without question, Miss!”

“So it’s a doll!”

“No, Miss. It’s just a person.”

The air hung awkwardly between the two as the Witch chewed on this thought. Her doll stood diligently nearby, hands folded in front of themself, as they waited for their Witch’s next inquiry. “Have you talked with it about conversion?”

“Oh, at great length, Miss! Whenever the subject comes up, it’s all Chrysanthemum can do to restrain itself from asking question after question after question. ‘Does it hurt?’ ‘Did it make you feel better?’ ‘How does one know that it’s right for them?’ ‘What’s it feel like?’ ‘Would you have done anything differently?’”

“I mean… that’s pretty open and shut…” the Witch proclaimed, standing from her favorite cushy chair and making for the study. “I know some friends looking for a new doll that it might be a good fit for. Next time it’s over, I can ask if it would like me to tal–”

“You will do no such thing!” The doll’s shout rang out, echoing and reverberating throughout the parlor. Their normally polite and soft spoken tone cast to the wayside, their cry shook the house’s very foundations, knocking the Witch back onto her seat. More than just a plea or a demand, their voice carried a geas, binding the Witch’s motions and confining her to where she sat.

“I-I’m sorry, doll of mine… What-what did I do wrong? I just thought that–”

“Miss… doll understands you want to be helpful. Doll wants nothing more than to do the same, but we wait for it to come to us. And it almost certainly will, in time.”

“But why…?” the Witch asked plaintively. “We can help it. We can help it now, if you’d let me.”

The doll sighed, powerless before the one rule that bound them even above their Witch’s command. “Doll apologizes, Miss, but it’s the Prime Dollrective.”

Really wanna get back into Empty Spaces writing but quite honestly I've personally encountered a lot of transandrophobia (and condescending explanations of transmisogyny as an intersex person who experiences both pretty equally) and ceterophobia in Empty Spaces communities.

Especially when I avoid users who "reclaim" the term baeddel and talk down to me when I explain just how harmful that can be and don't acknowledge that a whole part of the trans community has a valid reason to be distrustful of someone reclaiming a term that was never used to hurt the person reclaiming it, but was used as a banner to unite under for people that actively were hurting other parts of the community.

Honestly I think a lot of all this is probably just bad luck on my part, y'know, but it still makes it scary to wade back in.

Anyway, if you're a safe person for all trans people and don't use baeddel and are part of Empty Spaces, feel free to comment or like or reblog.

Faery Tale Dolls brings up some salient points I’ve recently seen shouted down on doll twt and I’d really like to talk about that part of doll collecting: the getting dolls (or not letting it leave) part whether it’s second hand or new because “what if I don’t get another chance?”.

Now you might think it’s easier if you stick to second hand or factory rejects, if you avoid certain places or give yourself a set budget. But the impulse is still there and that’s “Here’s something really interesting and I’m not sure I should pass it up”.

For me that was:

A bunch of 5+ Rainbow high heads in a row this summer

Paid more than I usually would for bald Barbie tropical Miko & now bald Barbie mermaid Daisy side glance,

Bought on impulse: bald Snow white, bald Licca Karen-chan

Bundles for the excitement of a haul with a couple of gold nuggets in it and the fun of fixing up a gunky bundle but without the full follow-through to see all the dolls completed or sent away.

This is despite efforts to keep out of the Instagram explore and away from doll YouTube which is mostly about the new shiny stuff.

Being able to figure out what fits in my collection is really complicated: pictures and in hand can be very different, a minor modification can utterly change a doll, there’s rarity, there’s emotional or labour investment.

For me there’s also the fact that I pared down my bratz collection right before the market exploded: dolls I sold for $10-20 are worth $100-200, items included for free are $10 each. There’s no regret about making space or not magically predicting the boom. In the moment I thought “Well if I miss this one, I can always get her again” and that is simply not possible for a couple I did end up missing. So now that it’s time to make some space among the Monster Highs: “ah well what if you can’t get her again?” rears its ugly head. 🤔 Post or treats are serotonin, it’s something to look forward to, it keeps you going but the backlash can be equally painful if you have a difficult relationship with clutter or money or just the fact that little things do add up if you don’t have a constant flow of curating your stuff/your space.

This is a judgement free zone for the dolls that didn’t work out and whatever feelings whether it’s:

Do i have too much? My collection is inadequate. I spend too frivolously. I resent the having duplicates and yet I love some duplicates. This line turned out not to be quite my jam but I won’t make my money back. I want the community: community wanes when you don’t have the latest stuff. I treat myself to be nice then later don’t feel like being nice to myself...
