BHOC: DEFENDERS #53
This issue of DEFENDERS was another book that I got out of a 3-Bag at either one of my local department stores or toy stores. Don McGregor‘s life and talent is spotlighted in a comprehensive retrospective in Comic Book Creator #29, available now from comic shops; the first issue publisher Tomorrows Publishing has devoted predominately to a comic writer.
From his Hopalong Cassidy-obsessed Rhode Island childhood to ubiquitous presence on Marvel Comics letters pages in the 1960s and early ’70s debut as Warren Publications…

Jungle Action #17 (McGregor/Graham, Sept 1975). The dense, intense saga of Panther’s Rage approaches its conclusion. I won’t claim that I enjoyed this — the brutality and breathlessness of McGregor’s writing made this a challenging read! But I’m glad I stuck with it. The first Black Panther movie adapted (and, in my opinion, improved) many elements of this run, and it’s fun seeing how Marvel continually develops and iterates characters like T’Challa.
