Dead cats don’t meow
This saying is attributed to Don Pedro Gilbert (1800-1835), who was former privateer in the service of the Colombian government. In early 1832, Gilbert began to raid American merchant ships off the east coast of Florida with his schooner, the Panda, since privateering was not paying him anything and he was now trying to do it illegally.
On 21 September 1832, off the coast of what is now Stuart, Florida, Gilbert chased then boarded the Mexican, an American brig bound from Salem to Rio de Janeiro carrying $20,000 in silver. Following the crew's surrender, a crew member asked Gilbert what was to be done with their captives, to which the pirate captain reportedly remarked, "Dead cats don't mew. You know what to do."

Locking the crew inside the forecastle, Gilbert's crew ransacked the ship, looting the Mexican's stores. Slashing the rigging and sails, the pirates filled the ship's galley with combustibles and set the ship afire with the crew trapped inside. However, the crew managed to break out after an hour and eventually doused the fire, although they continued to let enough smoke billow until the pirates were out of sight. After six weeks at sea, the crew finally made it back to Salem, where they were able to report the incident.
Gilbert was eventually captured in West Africa two years later when his ship was sunk in a naval engagement with the British brig sloop HMS Curlew, commanded by Henry Dundas Trotter. Extradited to the United States, he was tried with three of his crew members in Boston, Massachusetts and executed on 11 June 1835.

Gilbert Sinquè - Le Storie d'Amore che hanno cambiato il Mondo - di Serenella Mariani
Tumblr media
Gilbert’s Bar
Day 6-7: January 23-24, 2023 Ok, Ok… Not that kinda bar. Well, what then? Gilbert’s Bar was named for the nasty pirate Don Pedro Gilbert, ARRR! So, what’s this post about then? Close to Gilbert’s Bar is the last remaining House of Refuge. Back in the day the area of Florida between Miami and Daytona had a population in the range of 300 people. If you had a shipwreck on a reef or got caught in a…

My New Year’s Resolution for 2020 (I never make resolutions) was to watch at least two films a week that I’d never seen before. This year ended up giving ample opportunity to watch films I’d never seen before - not because I had bags of free time, in fact I was busier than ever, but because I needed something I could discover, needed variety, needed movies.
So this year I’ve watched 277 films that were new to me - some new releases, while I could get to the cinema, some huge blindspots and some just because they were there. And nobody asked for it, but these are the ones that stood out to me, in no particular order other than the order in which I watched them:

(I don’t think we know the names of any of the other kids at school)
For the most part the students take their roles seriously and have a lot of fun with it. Everyone is impressed by how good Anne and Gilbert are at their parts...

Bad Boys for Life (2020)Trailer: Welcome to Miami- Bad Boys for Life [HD]
WATCH:
https://film.bestmoviehd.net/movie/38700/bad-boys-for-life.html
Typical of Michael Bay, there are predictable, derivative and thus boring scenes in this movie, but the Cinematography is beautiful, it is Stylish, Glamorous, with some great humor especially on the side of Martin Lawrence, and some of the action scenes (not all, just some) are pretty good. Entertaining enough to watch.
