Me encantan los libros que tratan a la ciudad en que transcurren las historias como una protagonista más. Siempre me han interesado los temas relacionados con la arquitectura y el urbanismo, pues considero que la forma en que se diseña una ciudad dice mucho sobre la vida que se llevará en ella. Sin ahondar mucho más, pienso que la esta es el escenario en el que todos actuamos esa obra real y continua que es nuestra vida.

Lo anterior, y las ganas de echar manos y ojos en el catálogo de Chai Editora, hizo que en la pasada Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires decidiera comprar una selección de cuentos de Donald Antrim llamada “Otro Manhattan”. En un primer momento, la asociación con una ciudad paralela y subterránea es inevitable, sobre todo si miramos la imagen de la tapa: un hombre de rodillas con una mano atrás, como escondiendo algo. No obstante, y con el correr de los cuentos, la siguiente acepción toma forma de libación y simboliza el pedido del famoso trago en un restaurante de dicha ciudad.

¿Qué decir de Antrim? No tenía acercamiento a su producción literaria, pero por la descripción de sus personajes me pareció muy cercano a escritores que admiro mucho: Yates, Cheever o Carver, lo cual terminó de cerrar mi decisión de compra. Más tarde me enteraría de que Antrim compartía amistad con Jonathan Franzen y el fallecido David Foster Wallace y bueno, dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.

Para empezar a hablar del libro, los siete cuentos que lo componen son una muestra brillante de las distintas tonalidades narrativas que Antrim puede lograr. No obstante esta amplia gama, lo que siempre se encuentra presente es la angustia, ansiedad y lo urbano que define tanto a las historias como a sus personajes.

La magia del universo de este autor radica, al menos para mí, en la capacidad de contar historias de personajes fragmentados no tanto por sus calvarios personales como por la profunda humanidad con que los transitan. La vulnerabilidad (de todos los tipos posibles) es lo que atraviesa a todos los protagonistas –masculinos en su totalidad– de estos cuentos y es la misma ciudad la que oficia de espacio en el que ríen, lloran, sueñan, enloquecen, enferman, se recuperan y mueren. Esto me parece tan hermoso, sobre todo considerando la concepción que de las ciudades se ha hecho desde la lógica del capitalismo y que las describe solo como unidades territoriales demográficas que varían en extensión con respecto a un pueblo o una villa. Los temas económicos y políticos las hacen escenarios perfectos para los conflictos sociales, mas no para los cataclismos individuales y esa es justamente la importancia y uso que le confiere Antrim en estos trabajos.

Como ya mencioné, todos los personajes principales de Antrim (al menos en estos cuentos) son masculinos y lo que más atrajo mi atención con respecto a la relación entre el autor con sus protagonistas es la manera completa en que los desarrolla, llegando a desnudarlos de maneras que no conciben el recato ni la vergüenza, para bien o mal. En esta actitud sincera y hasta descarnada si se quiere, Antrim hace de su género algo tan vulnerable y despreciable al mismo tiempo que es inevitable no sobrecogerse ante esa maestría.

No obstante lo débil del primer cuento, tanto que creo no debió abrir la selección, tengo que decir que disfruté la mayoría de los presentes en esta obra, pero el que se llevó mi corazón fue “Otro Manhattan”, pues me hizo transitar por todos los estados emocionales posibles en un viaje muy corto. Del odio a la compasión, de la risa al llanto, pasando por la exaltación a la llana desesperación (el protagonista sufre de trastornos psiquiátricos y eso me pega muy fuerte) para culminar con esa sensación agraz muy parecida a la que se da en la mesa de un restaurante cuando todos los comensales piden otro Manhattan para brindar por el único alcohólico en la mesa.

IRLANDA e IRLANDA DO NORTE...

A República da Irlanda ocupa a maior parte da ilha da Irlanda, perto da costa da Inglaterra e do País de Gales. Sua capital, Dublin, é berço de escritores como Oscar Wilde e local de origem da cerveja Guinness. O Livro de Kells, do século 9, e outros manuscritos ilustrados estão em exposição na biblioteca da Universidade de Trinity, em Dublin. Apelidado de "Ilha Esmeralda" por sua paisagem exuberante, o país está repleto de castelos, como a construção medieval de Cahir.

Confira algumas curiosidades:

1- A Ilha Esmeralda, como é carinhosamente conhecida, é um local único, com paisagens verdes exuberantes, falésias gigantescas, rios e lagos enormes. A ilha é formada pela Irlanda do Norte, que pertence ao Reino Unido, e pela República da Irlanda, que pertence à União Europeia. A separação ocorreu em 1921, quando os dois territórios foram oficialmente divididos. Como o próprio nome diz, o território fica no norte e faz parte do Reino Unido junto com a Inglaterra, Escócia e País de Gales e possui as próprias leis enquanto a República da Irlanda é uma nação independente.

No entanto, apesar de pertencerem a sistemas de governos diferentes, em ambas você encontrará muita beleza, o sotaque irlandês, muita cerveja Guinness e pubs.

2- A República da Irlanda tem 84.421 km² de extensão, 5,01 milhões habitantes e vive em uma democracia parlamentar, com primeiro-ministro e presidente. Possuindo um PIB de 504,2 bilhões USD (2021).

3- A Irlanda do Norte, por outro lado, tem 14.130 km² de extensão e 2,05 milhões de habitantes. O país é governado por um sistema parlamentar e uma monarquia constitucional, tendo como chefe de Estado o rei Charles III.

4- A Irlanda do Norte é formada por seis condados: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry e Tyrone. A capital Belfast é a maior cidade, localizada em entre Antrim e Down, e com aproximadamente 280 mil habitantes.

5- As maiores diferenças entre as duas Irlandas são o sotaque e a moeda, já que, como parte do Reino Unido, a nação insular utiliza libras esterlinas e não euros, como é o caso da República.

6- A língua oficial é o inglês, apesar de boa parte da população falar o irlandês, também conhecido como gaélico irlandês ou apenas gaélico.

7- A Irlanda do Norte não faz mais parte da União Europeia, após o Brexit, o que torna a ilha a única ligação terrestre entre Reino Unido e um país do bloco europeu.

8- A Irlanda é um país que chove muito e venta mais ainda. Os dias são mais cinzas e o sol é um fenômeno quase que raro (inclusive, quando sai um solzinho, todo mundo corre para os parques e praças para aproveitar). Acredite se quiser, mas chove pelo menos 130 dias por ano por lá.

9- Não existem cobras na Irlanda do Norte, pelo menos não nativas. Alguns acreditam que isso é obra de São Patrício, que as teria perseguido até que morressem no mar. Mas, de acordo com especialistas, isso pode ter ligação com as mudanças da era glacial que tornaram a ilha inacessível para elas e o habitat inadequado.

10- O café da manhã é a principal refeição de um irlandes! Por isso, ele é bem farto, com ovos mexidos, bacon, torradas, tomate e feijão, que é meio adocicado, diferente do que comemos no Brasil.

11- Estima-se que a Irlanda tenha 13 milhões de galinhas, isso é mais que a população irlandesa. São pelo menos 3 galinhas para cada habitante.

12- A polícia irlandesa chama Garda Siochána, ela não usa arma no país. A Irlanda é considerado um país seguro, possui índices baixos de criminalidade. Dublin uma das maiores cidades do país, é tranquila quando comparada com outras capitais do mundo.

13- Cerveja é paixão nacional dos irlandeses, é uma bebida antiga. A marca mais famosa de cerveja é Guinness, essa cerveja é tão conhecida que virou marca registrada na irlanda. Se você quiser pedir uma cerveja é só falar “PINT OF GAT”.

14- Na Irlanda do Norte, os nomes que começam com Mac significam que são “filhos de alguém”, MacDonald, seria o filho do Donald. Os sobrenomes que começam com O’ significam que é “neto de alguém” O’Neil, neto do Neil.

15- A tradição do Halloween se originou na ilha da Irlanda de um antigo festival celta chamado de Samhain. As pessoas acendiam fogueiras e vestiam fantasias macabras para espantar os maus espíritos. A palavra Samhain é uma antiga palavra gaélica que significa “outra metade obscura” que marca o início do inverno.

16- São Patrício não era irlandês, mas sim galês! Ele nasceu em 386 d.C., foi capturado pelos irlandeses e vendido como escravo para trabalhar como pastor no oeste da Irlanda. Mais tarde, ele se tornou missionário e ajudou a espalhar a palavra de Cristo na Irlanda. Hoje ele é Patrono da Irlanda sendo muito reverenciado pelo povo irlandês. Existem várias lendas irlandesas atribuídas a ele, a mais famosas são a das cobras e serpentes. Na Irlanda não existem cobras e serpentes, a lenda fala que São Patrício teria expulsado e pisado nas cobras e esmagado com seu cajado.

17- O Titanic foi construído em Belfast e é possível saber mais sobre a sua história, construção e ver artefatos no Museu do Titanic. A primeira viagem do Titanic foi de Belfast para Liverpool, depois viajou para Southampton, Cherbourg and Cobh antes de cruzar o Atlântico em direção a Nova York. Ele foi construído por irlandeses e afundado por um inglês. O Titanic não poderia ficar de fora da lista de curiosidades da Irlanda do Norte!

18- Ao contrário da crença popular, apenas 9% da população da Irlanda é ruiva. Quem tem a maior porcentagem de ruivos na população é a Escócia.

19 – Existem mais de 100 palavras em inglês e em gaélico para se referir a ficar bêbado como bladdered, plastered, full, stocious, blutered, half-cut, steamin’, wasted, hammered, blocked etc. No entanto, ficar bêbado em público é crime.

John Eastman, an architect of Donald Trump’s last-ditch bid to subvert the 2020 election on Jan. 6, is about to go on trial — but not in a criminal court.

Rather, the attorney is fighting to save his California bar license from authorities who say he repeatedly breached professional ethics — and possibly the law — in his bid to keep a defeated Trump in power. And those proceedings, while not as prominent as the Jan. 6 select committee or as potentially punitive as a criminal prosecution, are slated to elicit some of the most revealing and comprehensive testimony from figures who aided Trump’s effort to derail the transfer of power.

That’s because Eastman and the California State Bar have amassed witness lists that include figures who have rarely spoken publicly about Jan. 6 but may hold valuable evidence — including Eastman himself, who is listed as a potential witness by the state bar’s trial counsel and by his own defense team. Their lists also include other high-profile figures, like former Bush administration lawyer John Yoo and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who are slated to testify as experts about constitutional law or election administration.

Eastman’s list features Kurt Olsen, a lawyer who spoke with Trump multiple times on Jan. 6 and who helmed legal efforts to unravel the election results in multiple states; Peter Navarro, the former Trump trade adviser who authored discredited reports on election integrity during the final weeks of 2020; Kurt Hilbert, a lawyer who worked on Trump’s post-election litigation in Georgia; Linda Kerns, a lawyer who worked on Trump’s post-election lawsuit in Pennsylvania; former Georgia State Sen. William Ligon; Doug Logan, the CEO of far-right election “audit” firm Cyber Ninjas; and Russell Ramsland, who was involved with a review of voting machines in Antrim County, Michigan, that became the source of pro-Trump conspiracy theories.

Trump talked to Olsen three times Jan. 6, 2021, including twice in the evening for a total of 21 minutes, according to White House logs obtained by the Jan. 6 select committee. But the content of those calls, as Congress was poised to reconvene after the riot had been largely pacified, remains unknown.

Meanwhile, the state bar plans to call its own notable list of witnesses, beginning with Greg Jacob, who on Jan. 6 was counsel to then-Vice President Mike Pence. Jacob tangled with Eastman in the days before Jan. 6 over Eastman’s claim that Pence could single-handedly prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

That theory is at the heart of the state’s case to punish Eastman on 11 professional charges, which include failure to support the laws and Constitution, seeking to mislead a court, misrepresentations to other Trump aides and the public, and moral turpitude.

“It is no overstatement that democracy stood on the precipice. Had Vice President Pence followed [Eastman’s] baseless advice … the country would have plunged into a ‘profound constitutional crisis,’” writes Duncan Carling of the California State Bar’s office of trial counsel in a pretrial brief. “[Eastman] and Trump’s plan violated our Nation’s most fundamental commitments to the rule of law and the orderly transition of power. And it rested upon transparently false claims of election fraud that continue to harm our democracy to this day.”

The bar proceedings, including a pretrial conference Monday and two weeks of testimony later in the month, are an example of the myriad forms of accountability facing those in Trump’s orbit Jan. 6 — particularly lawyers, whose roles are often shrouded in the murky domain of legal advice and attorney-client privilege. Though national attention has been riveted to the potential prosecutions of Trump and his allies in Washington and Georgia, state bars have also been marshaled to pursue investigations of these matters and in some cases have produced much quicker results."

He knew he had exhausted the patience and pity of his loved ones and he was terrified of mental hospitals: “The doctors would drug and shock me.” Death seemed preferable to a life lived within “stone dungeons.” He climbed off the fire escape and sat against a rooftop bulkhead for a long time. He later learned that he had been up there for five hours. Eventually, he made it down the stairs to his third-floor apartment, and his terrified friends rushed him to the hospital.

He is a survivor of suicide, but not in the way we traditionally understand that designation. Throughout this engrossing, necessary book — part memoir, part philosophical treatise — he argues that suicide is “a disease process, not an act or a choice.” Those who suffer from mental illness and die by (or “of”) suicide do not take their own lives, Antrim says, but have their lives taken from them. There is no will involved when one succumbs to disease.
