Best 2023 BL Side Couples

Every now and then the side couple steals the show, and you find yourself tuning in for the 2 minutes they get per episode versus the actual plot. Here are my faves of the year:

Moonlight Chicken: Li Ming ❤️ Heart

While this series may not have made my top 10 this year, this couple did. I'm a sucker for "irresponsible person learns how to be responsible through acts of love for someone who is physically impaired" story lines. (See also Last Twilight.) So every sweet gesture that rebellious Li Ming made to make deaf Heart's life more joyful and inclusive, including learning how to sign, made whatever was going on between the lead characters, Jim and Wen, an afterthought.

Kiseki: Dear to Me: Ai Di ❤️ Chen Yi

I love when the smitten one gives up riiiight before their crush is like Oh wait, I like you too! Theory of Love is another example of this, but KDTM did it better. You never really grew to hate Chen Yi, and understood why it took so long for him to see Ai Di as more than a friend. Baby boy was not really giving off crush vibes. More like in desperate need of therapy vibes. Thankfully, Chen Yi was immune to Ai Di's hostility, proving he was his perfect match.

Never Let Me Go: Ben ❤️ Chopper

There was so much going on in this drama that this pairing barely got enough screen time, and yet by the end of the series, I was daydreaming about them moving abroad together and living happily ever after. Loving the Chimon x Perth era. Hope to see more of it.

Unintentional Love Story: Kim Dong Hee ❤️ Go Ho Tae

I actually found the main pairing a tad meh, and was far more interested in the childhood bffs turned strangers subplot. I mean, the minute Ho Tae attempted to learn Spanish to impress Dong Hee, who fantasized about having a Spanish lover, I was hooked. I could watch an entire spinoff of these two with flashbacks to their youth and how their bond originally formed.

Between finding out that DongHee was abused by his father for his sexuality and that HoTae's mother was the one to comfort him in his worst moments and finding outt hat HoTae deliberately tried to embarrass himself into never confessing but couldn't hold it back and so did, again and again, but has now just completely given up on it going anywhere. @absolutebl look did they really go anywhere? No. Did I still love them? Yes. They're basically dating, let's be honest, even if DongHee isn't ready to admit it yet.

(And the way he kept turning the wine glasses to make sure he drank from where DongHee's lips were? The indirect kiss? The way DongHee just rolled his eyes. The long suffering friend who is just barely dealing with them is so accurate.)

But we did get a sweet little, if open, ending.

During this quarantine staying at home while doing nothing makes you bored. Here are some must watch K-drama during the quarantine.

1.  Dr. Romantic Mr. Kim Season 2 (2020)

This medical drama revolves around two talented surgeons, Ahn Hyo-Seop who playes the role of a General Surgeon who has a trouble past, and who is being ostracized by his fellow doctors, and Lee Sung-Kyung playing the role of Cha Eun-Jae who is a second-year Cardiothoracic surgeon who was suspended after making a major mistake inside the operation room. The two of them was temporarily transferred to Doldam Hospital where they meet the famous Master Kim who is played by Han Suk-Kyu. 

2. Welcome to Waikiki 2 (2019)

This Rom-Com drama Welcome to Waikiki also known as Laughter in Waikiki starring Lee Yi-kyung, Kim Seon-ho, Shin Hyun-Soo, Moon Ga-Young, Ahn So-hee and Kim Ye-won. The previous owners of Waikiki (Season 1) are now successful in their perspective fields leaving Lee Joon-Ki played by Lee Yi-Kyung alone, while struggling with his acting career, he tries to revive the guest hose amidst a bankruptcy along with the help of his high-school friends.

Starring Kim Young-Kwang, Ji Kin-Joo, Kim Jae-Kyung, and Koo Ja-Sung.

6. Still 17 (30 but 17) (2018)

Starring Shin Hye-Sun, Yang Se-Jeong and Ahn Hyo-Seop. The story revolves around a 30 year old Gong Woo-Jin (Yang Se-Jeong) who works as a set designer and due to a trauma he experience 13 years ago, he doesn’t want to date anyone. Woo Seo-Ri (Shin Hye-Sun) was 17 fell into a coma and 13 years later wakes up and realizes she is 30 years old already. Woo-Jin and Seo-Ri got invloved with each other and falls inlove, while Yoo Chan (Ahn Hyo-Seop) Woo-Jin’s nephew and who is a captain of a rowing club in his High School experiences one sided love with 30 year old Seo-Ri. 

7. School 2017 (2017)

School 2017 revolves around a class of high school students who attempts to overcome their stress of being ranked in their grade exams and facing the difficulties of being a teenager. Ra Eun-Ho (Kim Se-Jeong) is a cheerful and kind hearted 18 year old student who dreams to be webtoon artist but ends up searching for mysterious troublemaker at school known as ‘Student X’. Hyun Tae-Woon (Kim Jung-Hyun) is the son of the school’s director who enjoys his youth but also hides deep scars. Song Dae-Hwi (Jang-Dong-Yoon) a bright student who’s ranked 1st at school but doesn’t have enough money for his dream college, Dae-Hwi is also dating her classmate Hong Nam-Joo (Seol In-ah) who pretends to be from a rich family.

Cha Tae Hyun, B1A4’s Jinyoung, and f(x)’s Krystal have been confirmed to work together in the new KBS 2TV Monday-Tuesday drama “Police Lesson” (literal title; previously known as “Police Academy”)! “Police Lesson” is about a detective who catches criminals with all his might and a former hacker who uses his intelligence to solve everything. The two meet at the Police University as a professor and student, and they cooperate to investigate a case together. Cha Tae Hyun will play Police University professor Yoo Dong Man, who has 20 years of experience working in various divisions as a violent crimes detective and as a member of the cyber investigation team. With his skilled ability to take on any character, viewers are already anticipating how Cha Tae Hyun will portray a veteran detective as well as a professor at the Police University. Jinyoung will take on the role of Kang Sun Ho, a computer criminal who eventually becomes a first year student at the Police University. Jinyoung has built his acting experience by starring in the films “Miss Granny” and “The Dude in Me,” and he’ll captivate the audience once more as he portrays the way Kang Sun Ho gradually grows with the help of his professors and peers in the upcoming drama. Krystal will be playing Oh Kang Hee, a first year student at the Police University who has no pretense, secrets, or grudges. She has a good head on her shoulders and is righteous to her core.
