“See the lazy windmill slowly turning ah…carving up the marble canyons of the sky. See the dust around my feet go churning ah…moving down the winds of the highways of goodbye…”
SONG OF THE WEEK: “Silver Moon” (a Mike Nesmith song) https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/silver-moon...There’s been a critical reappraisal of Mike Nesmith’s production and songwriting, specifically his ground-breaking 70s country rock material with The First National Band. They made a trilogy of albums that fused old school country with post-psychedelic rock, Tin Pan Alley, and Latin styles. Truth is, Nez was dabbling at this before and during The Monkees; The FNB just elaborated on it (even if people didn’t “get it” then). Decades later this phase of Nez has a fresh audience, with some arguing whether Gram Parsons or Nez was The Original Cosmic Cowboy.
In November 1970, Nez & The FNB released the single “Silver Moon,” charting in the lower rungs of the Top 20. In the late 80s I added Nez’s “Silver Moon” to my solo set. In the 90s, I began working with Davy Jones, the British Monkee. He heard me do “Silver Moon” at a gig, then he started singing it (there’s a bootleg around of us doing it in Circleville OH). In 1996 I met Nez at the JUSTUS recording sessions in Nashville. I told him about the coverage “Silver Moon” was getting, and he was amused and surprised. A year later I convened with a Nez tribute act called The Third National Band (Donna Bailey, Gary Owen, Scott Ringle). We cut this version of “Silver Moon” that imagines Buddy Holly with cranked pre-amps. John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Ministry) is at the mixing board.

It takes work to clean the arcade after we close for the day - like any business. But not too many jobs let you look at Centipede high scores, handle Atari 2600 carts, and check out Nintendo Power maps for 1989's Willow while you are cleaning! #arcadelife #retrogaming #nes #willow #atari #atari2600 #arcades #donnabailey #edlogg #diaryofanarcadeemployee #podcast https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Gg70XAc2u/?igshid=bn5shzm7j1ui

RU: постер аркадного автомата "Сороконожка" от Атари. Кстати, это первая видеоигра, придуманная женщиной. Её разработчица Донна Бэйли очень не любила пауков и придумала игру, где их надо расстреливать. . EN: the "Centipede" by Atari, the very first videogame, developped by a woman and for girls. As Donna Bailey stated, she came up with the "Centipede" because she didn't like spiders. . #donnabailey #arcades #arcademachines #arcadegames #retrovideogames #retrogaming #мылюбим80е https://www.instagram.com/p/B5yOAREIyna/?igshid=1tevx4zo8v98g

Studies have shown that more women play video games than teenage boys but the culture of video games seems to be very anti-women and anti-girls. What makes it ironic is not just the fact that a huge percentage of video game players are women but also the fact that women have played a part creating the video gaming history that helped make today's video games possible. Sierra On-Line (later known as Sierre Entertainment) co-founder, Roberta Williams is considered one of the most influential PC game designers of the '80s and '90s and has been credited with creating the graphic adventure genre. Before becoming a game programmer Donna Bailey worked at General Motors training in assembly language programming and working on displays and microprocessor-based cruise control systems. When she joined Atari's coin-op division in 1980 she was the only woman. Carol Shaw is considered to have become the first woman video game designer in 1978 when she started working at Atari programming games for the company's VCS console. Afterwards she worked at Activision, a firm notable for being the first third-party video game software publisher where she made her best known game, River Raid. #carolshaw #donnabailey #robertawilliams #womenshistorymonth #videogames #atari #pepperspraymedia #sierraentertainment #centipede #generalmotors #activision #riverraid #microprocessor #videogameprogramming #kingsquest #pc #pcgamedesigners #videogamedesigners #girlsingaming #womeningaming #womenplayvideogames #sierraonline

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Tapioca Tundra (Kraftwerk Mix)” by The 3rdNational Band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22uWPtBD9EE This came from a Michael Nesmith tribute project, organized by Donna Bailey and Gary Owen. Here's my favorite mix of "Tapioca Tundra" from that session, sung ably by Scott Ringle. Our take was recorded in 1997 at the studio of John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Ministry), with John contributing additional keyboard work. "TT" was one of Nesmith's trippier entries into the Monkees catalogue. People compared the lyrics to "I Am The Walrus" but no could pinpoint what it's supposed to be about—except Nez, who said it's about looking out over a sea of Monkees fans at a concert in Hawaii. Personnel:
Donna Bailey: drums John Bechdel: keyboards & mixing JJB: bass & synthesizer Gary Owen: guitars Scott Ringle: vocals

FRIDAY FLASHBACK—“Tapioca Tundra” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/tapioca-tundra-kraftwerk-mix-remastered-2021 ...This cover of a 1968 Monkees/Michael Nesmith song came from a Nesmith tribute project called The Third National Band. Here's my favorite mix of "Tapioca,” sung marvelously by Scott Ringle. "TT" was one of Nez’s trippier entries in the Monkees catalogue. People compare the abstract lyrics to "I Am The Walrus” and find their own meanings in it (some R-rated), but Nez said it's about looking out over a sea of people at a concert—a poetic assessment of what it was like to feel the exchange between the music, the musician, and the adoring fans.

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Silver Moon” (written by Mike Nesmith): There’s been a critical reappraisal of Mike Nesmith’s production and songwriting, specifically his ground-breaking 70s country rock material with The First National Band.
