This production is again set in the Cardiff community of Splott but is very different fare: a teenage love story inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, lighter and sweeter than its near namesake. The star-crossed lovers are dealing with hard-scrabble lives: Julie (Rosie Sheehy) is an aspiring astrophysicist whose working-class parents are desperate for her to get into Cambridge University. Romeo (Callum Scott Howells) is an out-of-work single father, caught between his baby and his alcoholic mother, struggling to buy nappies.
Spun as a romcom cum kitchen sink drama, there is plenty of cuteness and comic banter, along with Gavin and Stacey-style awkward encounters with each other’s parents. Hayley Grindle’s abstract set illuminates the skies that Julie seeks to study as a mobile constellation dangling above, which also references Shakespearean fate written in the stars.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Tapioca Tundra (Kraftwerk Mix)” by The 3rdNational Band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22uWPtBD9EE This came from a Michael Nesmith tribute project, organized by Donna Bailey and Gary Owen. Here's my favorite mix of "Tapioca Tundra" from that session, sung ably by Scott Ringle. Our take was recorded in 1997 at the studio of John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Ministry), with John contributing additional keyboard work. "TT" was one of Nesmith's trippier entries into the Monkees catalogue. People compared the lyrics to "I Am The Walrus" but no could pinpoint what it's supposed to be about—except Nez, who said it's about looking out over a sea of Monkees fans at a concert in Hawaii. Personnel:
Donna Bailey: drums John Bechdel: keyboards & mixing JJB: bass & synthesizer Gary Owen: guitars Scott Ringle: vocals

Garry Owen: They Died With Their Boots On.
youtube
The word garryowen is derived from Irish, the proper name Eóghan ("born of the yew tree") and the word for garden garrai - thus "Eóghan's Garden". The term refers to an area of the town of Limerick, Ireland.
"Garryowen" is known to have been used by Irish regiments as a drinking song.  As the story goes, one of the Irish "melting pot" Troopers of the 7th Cavalry, under the influence of "spirits", was singing the song.  By chance Custer heard the melody, liked the cadence, and soon began to hum the tune to himself.  The tune has a lively beat, that accentuates the cadence of marching horses, and for that reason was adopted as the regimental song soon after Custer arrived at Fort Riley, Kansas to take over command of the 7th Cavalry Regiment.  It was the last song played for Custer's men as they left General Terry's column at the Powder River and rode into history. Unlike the movie, The tune was probably brought to the 7th Cavalry by  Myles W. Keogh and other officers with relations to the Fifth Royal Irish Lancers. James Butler, who introduces the song in the movie, was not a comissioned officer, he was the First Sgt. in Custer's 7th, he died at the Little Big Horn fight as he does in the film.
Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed But join with me, each jovial blade Come, drink and sing and lend your aid To help me with the chorus:
chorus: away with spa, we'll drink brown ale And pay the reckoning on the nail;No man for debt shall go to jail From Garryowen in glory.
We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun, We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run We are the boys no man dares dunIf he regards a whole skin.
Our hearts so stout have got no fameFor soon 'tis known from whence we came Where'er we go they fear the name Of Garryowen in glory.

Ryu Number: Don Adams
Don Adams was an American actor, best known for his role as the incredibly skilled yet incredibly clumsy secret agent Maxwell Smart in the secret agent spoof sitcom Get Smart. If you don't recognize the title—which, fair enough, it aired literally sixty years ago—he also notably voiced the dimwitted cyborg police officer protagonist of the Inspector Gadget cartoons.
He has a Ryu Number of at most 4.
Tumblr media
The last portion of Space Quest V: Roger Wilco – The Next Mutation features our titular protagonist infiltrating the SCS Goliath, making use of its cramped, labyrinthine maintenance tunnels.
Tumblr media
Apparently someone in development thought the passageways a bit reminiscent, video-game-wise: Take the right wrong path, and Roger will speedily crawl in the other direction with an unexpected cameo on his tail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier is fully voiced, including—as you may know already because @ryunumber—noted disc jockey, announcer, and voice actor Gary Owens. Normally this wouldn't be enough to count the actor themselves, even if they are credited in the game—but persist past the end credits and fade-out and you'll hear the narrator thank you for playing Space Quest 6 before extroducing himself specifically as "Gary Owens, signing off." Totally counts!
Finally, guess who got himself a copy of TV Land Presents Blast From the Past?
Tumblr media
Mind, it's such a jalopy of a game I couldn't get it to run on my computer without serious graphical issues...
Tumblr media
... but I was able to get it to run just runnily enough to confirm its nature! If you ever wanted to play a game where TV stars of a bygone era ask you trivia questions about the shows they were on... then you're not exactly choked with options, are you?
Gary Owens pulls double-duty here, playing both quiz host and TV star questionmonger, his questions focusing on the sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (where he was the on-screen announcer).
Tumblr media
Don Adams' questions, of course, have to do with Get Smart. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any clean, non-glitched-out footage of him from my recordings, so have this video I extracted from the game files instead.
You know what? There's a charm to it.
