I can’t be the only person who is freaked out, disturbed & saddened by all the face change/tune apps advertised on Instagram. Right? They are seriously appearance transforming and not in a change the lighting sort of way, but in dramatic shape shifter ways. What happens when you meet people in person and they look nothing like their heavily altered photos? Plus, on a much larger scale, what is it saying or reinforcing about our insecurities. I think of when I was a teen and riddled with self doubt about my appearance how these kinds of apps would have messed with my head. Now, I feel like I’ve earned this face. This body. We’ve all earned our place with ourselves and it’s an evolving journey. We should be celebrating that and each other as we truly are, not a false narrative. You’re amazing where you are right now and you’ll only get better, ‘cause you’re on it for real not because some app changed you’re facial structure. I remember when I first arrived in LA (I was a struggling actor from NY) and my first LA agent said that I wasn’t good looking enough to be a leading man, or interesting looking enough to be a character actor. He offered to pay for hair plugs and a nose job as an “investment” that I could pay back as I started booking work. I asked him why he signed me and he said he thought I actually had some talent, but that wasn’t even part of the equation. The sad thing is, I actually considered it for a hot minute before I shaved my head, fired him and left him with a minor memory of me. Don’t allow others to play on the insecurities you never had to begin with—they were placed there through outsourcing. You’re good! Great, actually. Man, and here I was feeling guilty and thinking that adding a filter to a random photo was stretching the truth. Tell someone you love how beautiful they are, or hell—freak out a total stranger and tell them! This is my unfiltered/untuned face, btw. I never take my shirt off in public. I spent a decade of my life (6-16) having my body abused by a group of adults that were supposed to protect me. When I was old enough to admit to myself that I was gay, the very community I wanted so desperately to be a part of didn’t think I was thin enough, muscular enough, or anything enough to belong. As men, we don’t really talk much about our negative body image. Especially when there has been a history of sexual abuse. This past week, due to some unexpected circumstances, my body needed to be observed. To be tested. And even more tests. With results ranging from super scary to we have no idea what’s going on. The bottom line...I’ll be fine. Hell, I’ll be more than fine. I’ll thrive. But in the last week, as I was laying on cold slabs. Being scanned. Moved around and stuck with different tools like a Thanksgiving turkey, I thought of all the years I wasted being ashamed of my body. The one that could lift and move furniture to make someone feel better about their space. The one that could wrap it’s arms around a friend when they were crying. The one that eventually ran as fast as it could from it’s abusers. That body. This body is strong and determined and not a quitter. It’s amazing. Your body is amazing! Hell, it’s a work of art that you should be proud of. As it is. Please don’t spend another second judging it. Comparing it. Being ashamed of it. We walk around every day as little miracles. Celebrate that in yourself and in each other.
