How to replace a door frame

Removing the door, trim and frame

Remove the door from the frame. Loosen the hinge pins by tapping them with a hammer, then pull them out of position. Carefully lift the door off the hinges and discard it. Unscrew the hinge pins from the door frame with a screwdriver and remove them.

Cut along the sealant between the wall and the trim. Look for a bead that secures the trim to the wall. Slide a utility knife along the entire length of the trim to loosen it.

This will also remove any paint that is stuck to the wall

Pry the old paneling off the wall. Slide a pry bar under the old paneling. Loosen it firmly from the wall by applying downward pressure - toward the wall - to lever it toward you and off the wall. Start with the top and then move on to the sides. Continue levering off the trim until it is completely removed.

Place a washer between the wall and the pry bar to avoid damaging the wall.

If your trim is in really good shape, you can reuse it! Otherwise, measure the pieces so you can buy replacements.

Remove the door jamb. Use a handsaw to saw through the door jamb. You only need to make a single cut and you can do this anywhere on the door jamb. Then use a pry bar to pry the existing jamb from both the sides and top of the door casing.

Cutting through the jamb will make it easier to remove, as it will give you access to insert the pry bar.

Measure the opening, so you can select a door that will fit without having to add a row of shims.

Remove any nails that are still in the wall. After you remove the frame, you might find that there are still some nails stuck in the wall. Use pliers or the sharp end of a hammer to apply pressure to the wall and pry them out.

Replacing the frame, the door and the casing

Place the new door and frame in the opening and tack them in place. Choose a prefabricated door with the same dimensions as your old door. Carefully place it in the opening and use a level to make sure the hinge side is plumb. Align the door as needed, then nail it to the hinge side first with galvanized nails.
