We all know about the Oakland/San Francisco (Bay Area) music scene. But when I think of it, I think of hazy, guitar-centric pop. I don't think of meticulously crafted pop in the vein of Lawrence Arabia, Laurie Shaw or The Martial Arts.
Skyway Man "Flight of the Long Distance Healer" is just a great album. James Wallace (Oakland) writes music that reminds me of the work of Mull Historical Society and the like.
Mama Bird Recording Co. (Portland, Oregon) has just released this. It sits nicely alongside another Mama Bird artist - Matt Dorrien.

King took in stride that Rustin, Levison, and Baker had Old Left backgrounds. It was one of God’s mysteries why so many Communists and so few white liberals had cared about black Americans. King had become a democratic socialist in seminary, embracing the conviction of Johnson, Barbour, social gospel icon Walter Rauschenbusch, and Boston University ethicist Walter Muelder that political democracy cannot survive without economic democracy. Then he joined a racial justice movement in which he took for granted that former Communists had major roles to play. Rustin and Levison believed that black Americans would never be free as long as large numbers of whites were oppressed by poverty. Capitalism, they said, played different roles in the struggles for racial justice in the North and South. In the North, blacks suffered primarily from the predatory logic of capitalism. In the South, blacks suffered primarily from the tyranny of racial caste, and capitalism was an ally in the struggle against racial tyranny because the capitalist class experienced the demands of racial caste as a needless waste. In the North, fighting for economic justice was intrinsic to the struggle for racial justice; in the South, economic justice was secondary for the time being. King agreed with Rustin and Levison that the Northern and Southern struggles had to be waged differently and that the struggle for economic justice for all Americans was indispensable in the long run.

26th August 1914 - Western Front.
Audencourt 3am - 5 pm. The Battle of Le Cateau was fought in France. The battle was largely fought by the BEF’s II Corps, commanded by General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien. The Corps Commander’s intention was to strike the Germans hard, and then continue the retreat, but his intentions were poorly communicated to his subordinates, some of whom thought that they were to hold the ground at all costs and that no further retreat was planned. II Corps deployed with 5th Division on the right on the Le Cateau- Cambrai road between Inchy and Le Cateau. 4th Division was on the left flank and 3rd Division in the centre between Caudry and Inchy. In 3rd Division, 7th Brigade was located at Caudry, 8th Brigade to the east of Caudry, and then 9th Brigade. 2nd Royal Irish was in 8th Brigade, located between Caudry and Audencourt.
The battalion stood to from 3 am to 5 am. They and 4/Middlesex were in Brigade reserve until about 8 am when both battalions were deployed to support the forward troops.
A Coy were held in battalion reserve at the crossroads 200 yards southwest of Audencourt where they were ordered to entrench. 40 Bde Royal Field Arillery had batteries located east of Audencourt close to the Royal Scots positions and near A Coy positions at the crossroads. The Germans began shelling these positions about 9 am. At about 9.30 am Lt-Col Cox, the battalion commander was wounded by shrapnel. The battle around Audencourt was largely an artillery duel until 1 pm when the shelling ceased; to be replaced by desultory rifle fire.
At 2 pm the Germans began a heavy bombardment of Audencourt, lasting until 4.45 pm when a retirement was ordered through A Coy’s position. The bombardment fell on this area at about 5 pm with A Coy sustaining many casualties. The bombardmemt was followed shortly by an infantry assault from the east and north east and Cox ordered A Coy to retire 800 yards south towards Montigny. Here B Coy under Maj Daniell rejoined from Caudry. Daniell took command of the two companies while Cox was evacuated by ambulance wagon.
Caudry 5am - 5 pm. The Germans began shelling the village of Caudry about dawn. About 8 am C and D Coys were sent under the perennial Maj St Leger to reinforce the Gordon Highlanders. D Coy under Captain Elliott plus one platoon of C Coy were deployed in a railway cutting, extending the Gordon Highlander’s line. Major Panter Downes and the rest of C Coy were deployed facing east to counter any threat from Caudry where the 7th Bde were already being forced back. The Royal Irish lacked entrenching tools, theirs' having gone astray on the retreat from Mons. C Coy were therefore forced to deploy in the open. St Leger kept a small reserve of 25 men with him.
At 1 pm the Germans shelled Caudry heavily while engaging St Leger’s position with rifle and MG fire. An hour later troops in Caudry began to retreat and the Royal Irish came under MG fire from their right rear, indicating the Germans had broken through the Gordon’s line. About this time 2/Lt Edward Philips joined St. Leger with 7 men with whom he had been sent to cover D Coy’s left flank. Philips had lost 8 men moving positions. With his position now under fire from three sides, St Leger ordered the unwounded men to make their way to C Coy’s area. St Leger himself was wounded in the arm but managed to crawl to C Coy’s area. Here he found Maj Panter-Downes lying fatally wounded. Panter-Downes reported that his men had held their position until they came under fire from the rear. All his officers and NCOs being casualties he ordered his men to retreat as best they could. 2/Lt Philips, also wounded, escaped after dark, joining a company of the Cameronians south of Caudry.
B Coy under Major Daniell had been sent to reinforce 7th Brigade in Caudry where his platoons were dispersed in various positions. When the village was evacuated, Daniell gathered as many of his men as he could and withdrew to rejoin the battalion. Two of his platoons were separated in the withdrawal, and, under Lt Newton-King, joined an ammunition column. They rejoined the battalion at Ham on the 28th August.
With a general retirement under way at about 5 pm, the remnants of the Royal Irish withdrew to Beaurevoir. The Battalion’s casualties for the day were 218 killed, wounded and missing.

For Christmas I received a large and beautiful hardback book which contains a nature poem for every day of the year. I’ve got to admit that I’m not a poetry person and up to now at least, I’ve found the content extremely challenging, so the gift giver, Ms Nature Watch the elder, threw down the gauntlet and said, can you do better?
Well, I won’t say better, but I can do different, a present-day take on the same title and so I chose to write one poem for the birthday of each person close to me. The first in the year is my late father’s birthday.

Forever associated with spring, daffodils are a welcome sign that warmer days are ahead. An inspiration to artists across the centuries and entangled in myth and symbolism, there’s much more to these bright and cheery trumpets than meets the eye. I found an article with some fascinating and unusual facts about one of our most popular springtime blooms. It was published by the seed and bulb sellers, Suttons, so thanks to them for the following.
What do daffodils symbolise?
Daffodils are among the first flowers to appear as spring approaches, so it’s no surprise that they’re the birth flower for March as well as a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings. But daffodils have also represented many other ideas over the years. The Victorians, for example, considered them the flower of respect and friendship.
Traditionally given on a tenth wedding anniversary (I never heard that before) florists often add daffodils to these celebratory bouquets as a symbol of faith, joy and happiness. However, in days gone by, presenting someone with a single daffodil was seen as bad luck, while observing a bloom as its head drooped used to be thought to herald death. I never heard of that either, but then I’ve never known of anyone give a single daffodil to anyone.
That apart, daffodils remain primarily associated with hope. At the start of 2020 they were the inspiration for David Hockney’s daffodil artwork. Drawn on an iPad during the first COVID-19 lockdown, the piece was titled: ‘Do Remember They Can’t Cancel The Spring’. You can also see it here at The Art Newspaper.
Daffodils as medicine
Originating in the Mediterranean, daffodils are said to have been brought to the UK by Roman soldiers who used them for pain relief and wound healing. We know now that this is unlikely to have helped, as all parts of the daffodil are toxic and should not be consumed. Prolonged exposure to the sap can cause dermatitis.
That said, daffodils do contain the compound galantamine, which has been found to slow the progression of dementia symptoms. In certain parts of the UK, like the Black Mountains in Wales, daffodils are grown specifically to produce a treatment for Alzheimer’s. How incredible.
It’s very fitting that the daffodil is the national flower of Wales and is proudly worn on 1st March to celebrate St David’s Day.
Daffodils in poetry
We’re all familiar with the poem ‘I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud’, William Wordsworth, having taken a walk in the Lake District with his sister Dorothy, describes his feelings upon seeing ‘a host of golden daffodils’ growing at the edge of a lake. A lesser-known fact is that the poem was also inspired by his sister’s journal entry, and that the middle two lines of the final stanza were written by Wordsworth’s wife, Mary Hutchinson.
The Cornish daffodil industry
Bunches of daffodils have been sold in the UK for hundreds of years, but commercial farming of the flowers really took off in the late 19th century, courtesy of Cornish potato farmer William Trevellick. The daffodils around his farm on the Isles of Scilly bloomed much earlier than on the mainland, so he made use of the weekly freighter and the (then relatively new) Penzance to London railway link to get freshly-cut blooms to London within 48 hours of picking.
Island landowner Thomas Dorrien-Smith built on Trevellick’s idea by encouraging his tenant farmers to make bulb-forcing houses and transport boxes for the flowers, and also brought in different varieties to extend the flowering season. This in turn inspired mainland farmers to start planting bulbs, and the world’s largest daffodil grower, Varfell Farm, is still in operation today in Penzance, Cornwall.
Tumblr media
Establishing the difference between ‘daffodil’ and ‘narcissus’ seems to cause confusion (throw ‘jonquil’ into the mix if you want to increase the head-scratching). To clear this up, daffodils and jonquils are the common names of spring-flowering bulbs that are members of the genus ‘Narcissus’ (the botanical Latin name for this group of plants)
Daffodils in Greek mythology
The name ‘Narcissus’ comes from a Greek myth about a hunter who spurned all romantic advances and then fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to tear himself away, he died and a narcissus flower grew where his body had been. The way that daffodil heads tilt towards the ground is said to mimic Narcissus dropping his head to gaze at his reflection. This story is also the origin of the term ‘narcissism’, which describes someone who is selfish, overconfident, and obsessed with their personal appearance.
Wild daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) are sometimes called Lent Lilies, as they commonly bloom and die back between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. There are over 50 species of narcissus in existence and thousands of hybrids and cultivars. They come in a wide variety of colours, shapes and scents and I’ve never met one I didn’t like. Our own are slow to bloom compared to other local areas. I’ve seen lots of vibrant patches along with the snowdrops and odd drifts of crocus. We’re officially in meteorological spring now, even if the weather doesn’t seem to agree with that. Roll on Spring proper please

Finest Lighting for Video Conferencing for students
Tumblr media
Even while offices are starting to reopen, a significant number of employees will continue to perform their jobs from the comfort of their own homes for the foreseeable future. It is therefore reasonable to assume that Lighting for Video Conferencing and video calls will continue to exist in the foreseeable future.
If you want to look your best on Zoom, you should look for natural light, which, according to the filmmakers, videographers, and television producers with whom we spoke, is always going to be the best way to illuminate yourself on a video call. Zoom is a video conferencing app that allows users to communicate with one another using the internet.
According to the director David Tan, "The fundamental guiding idea is that, for the most flattering light, you want your light source to be bigger and softer." [Citation needed] The cinematographer Will Dorrien-Smith agrees, stating that facing a window is the ideal position to sit in "so that your complete face is lit, with a basic background that has depth behind you." (However, you should never sit so that a window is directly behind you, as this will cause you to be backlit.)
Hannah Van Winkle, a producer for NBC News, is fond of saying that "Lighting is everything," thus the question arises: what can you do if the natural light in your home office was never particularly abundant to begin with? In the next paragraphs, lighting specialists Van Winkle, Dorrien-Smith, Tan, and two others discuss the most effective ways to illuminate a home office — or any makeshift area you've cobbled together — when there may not be enough natural light.
Led Bulbs
In the event that you are unable to position yourself in close proximity to a window or that window does not receive an adequate amount of natural light, your best choice is to recreate this circumstance, which may be done in a few different ways.
The first thing you can do is experiment with changing the bulbs in your desk lamp to LED ones. According to Tan, if you use LED bulbs in your desk lamp, you may direct the light onto the wall that is in front of you. If the lamp were directed straight at your face, the light from the lamp would not be able to reflect off of the wall and create as huge of a source as it would if it were pointed at the wall.
Tan claims that this arrangement will make the light somewhat softer and will spread it out evenly across your face to create an appearance that is more pleasing. Van Winkle is of the same opinion, stating that "it's all about getting an even light straight on the face" and that the light should not come from an upward or downward angle.
Tan and Dorrien-Smith also suggest considering a product's color-rendering index (also known as CRI) while shopping for LED bulbs and other types of lighting on this list. According to Dorrien-Smith, this index is essentially a measurement of how accurately colours are rendered by the product. "You want your light to have a CRI that is as high as possible because the higher it is, the closer it is to natural light," explains Tan.
"The higher it is, the closer it is to natural light." A CRI that is as near to 100 as possible is ideal, given that the CRI rating of natural light is 100. These daylight LED lights from Philips have a CRI that is high enough to do the task; according to the firm, every Philips LED light has a CRI that is at least 80. These light bulbs are comparable to 60-watt light bulbs.
Led Desk Lamp
If you don't already have a lamp for your desk, you might want to think about purchasing this one from TaoTronics because it includes an LED light that is integrated right in. When he is on Zoom conversations from his home office, strategic tech writer Jordan Bowman refers to it as a "makeshift ring light," which is another item that the industry professionals recommend using.
It instantly brightens his face, which would otherwise be in shadow. Because of the lamp, the lighting in his environment was increased, and he wrote in his journal that "My Zoom background resembled a true room," which allowed his coworkers to see that he was, in fact, there at the meeting.
According to Bowman, it includes seven different brightness levels and five different colour options, which together can "address pretty much every lighting problem you might have." (Even though the CRI of the LED bulb in the lamp isn't listed in the product description, his experience with it suggests that, by tinkering with the brightness and the colour options, you can discover a glow that replicates the light that comes from natural sources.)
Bowman further notes that in contrast to other desk lights, both the head and the base of this one can be adjusted, which "makes it more adaptable" and makes it even simpler to position at the most flattering angle.

King’s belief in the importance of federal government reformism was deeply rooted in the black social gospel tradition, and was already under attack by the Black Power movement during his last years. Today it is a flashpoint issue that polarizes American politics at every level, roiling, especially, white working-class Americans, who believe that the federal government confers blessings on everyone except them. The first thing that must be said about the political crisis of the white working class is that the racial factor is central. Working-class whites differ from all other working-class laborers on account of their whiteness. Donald Trump won every economic sector of the white vote, and his race-baiting bigotry was spectacularly successful among the white working class.

How to Light for Video Conferencing ?
Tumblr media
A ring lamp, which is frequently used in TikTok videos and beauty videos, can also be an excellent choice if it has a high CRI. The price of such a lamp is typically very affordable.
Evan Daniels, a photographer and studio production manager, is the one who recommended using this ring light because he employs it in editorial photo shoots that take place at his facility.
The light can be adjusted easily as it has a CRI rating of 96 and is dimmable. This makes it one of the Best HP Laptops (or if you want to "tune in the intensity," according to Daniels).
He continues by saying that "it's simple and quick to operate," adding that the ring lighting for Video Conferencing is bi-color and that the colour temperature of the light can be changed from warm to cool. He concludes by saying that "it's simple and quick to operate."
The ability to "match it more readily with regular indoor lamp illumination or with natural daylight" is afforded to you as a result of this.
Because of the potential for glare that can be caused by ring lights reflecting in the wearer's eyes and eyewear, our professionals strongly advise against their use.
Tan suggests moving the light source further away from your face, slightly to the side, or slightly above you as a solution to correct it. He remarks, "This causes the light to become even more diffuse.
LED Ring Light from AIXPI Measuring 10 Inches in Diameter, Supplied with a Tripod Stand and a Phone Holder This ring light is not only more cost-effective, but it also takes much less time to set up because it already includes a tripod. When looking on Amazon for the ring lights with the highest customer ratings, some of our coworkers at the Strategist UK stumbled upon it.
They mention that it has a CRI of 92 as well as the fact that "many customers initially purchased the lamp to highlight their video conversations – 17 reviews liked how handy the product had been for Zoom."
Full-color BOLING BL-P1 RGB LED camera
This LED panel light is one that Dorrien-Smith uses when shooting videos remotely, and he also provides it to the talent. He recommends this light if you are looking for something of a higher professional calibre. He remarks, "This little light is actually pretty cool for being so small.
"If you stand close to an empty wall and reflect light off of it, you can create a light that is not only soft but also quite flattering. This kind of light is called bounce light. (During the course of our FaceTime conversation, he took the time to show me exactly how everything works, and I have to say that it was quite impressive.)
The light has a CRI of 96, and it is made up of 290 different LED beads. It also has an adjustable brightness. Due to the fact that it is an RGB LED, you are also able to change the colour of the light (composed of red, green, and blue lights).
Because of the attached arm and square design, the light "can literally just stand on its own," as stated by Dorrien-Smith, and it is "very easy to position on a desk." Because of this, he is able to guarantee that "You're Guaranteed a Pleasant Light No Matter Where You Are."
One last piece of guidance for making yourself look fantastic in videos
You can look your absolute best on video calls by positioning your laptop or camera in the optimal location. The following rule of thirds, according to Van Winkle, should be adhered to: She recommends that you position your head so that it is in the top third of the screen if you are viewing it horizontally and dividing it into thirds."
Even though it may sound normal to have your head in the middle of the picture, it certainly doesn't look normal. You ought to raise the position of your head in relation to the screen.
In light of this, you should position your computer or camera so that it is at eye level or just a few inches above it.
To accomplish this, Gregory suggests piling a few books atop a laptop or camera "so the camera is closer to your eye level and not aiming up at your unattractive chin." This will allow the camera to take a picture that is more flattering to the subject.
