I've been asking myself why it felt like Graner (remember him?) seemed so much more aligned with Cobel than Lumon. Why he seemed like her attack dog, her lackey. Why there was a kinship between them that Cobel lacked with every single other person she interacted with. I thought it was likely they came up together, that they were raised in the Kier cult and put through the same abuses and suffered the same sort of belittlement at Lumon. I thought they saw something pure in Kier's teachings that Lumon ultimately bastardized, commercialized. That all still might be true, but I think this episode gives me another answer: he knew. He knew who she was and what she had built. He respected her. He was willing to take risks to help her take back control, or at least credit, of what she had made. Old colleagues lift each other up.

Can't wait until Severance season 3, in which Lumon hires an even bigger security man, who gets murdered in front of Mark in an even more traumatizing fashion.

i think so often about the fact that lumon raises its unsevered employees. and that they all probably know each other from childhood. cobel and reghabi as teenagers fighting over lab equipment. drummond and graner arm wrestling during lunch. 12 year old natalie getting pulled out of class for private translation and interpretation lessons, milchick spending the rest of the class alone. god. and how much of this show is about finding your own happiness in a hopeless situation. it wouldn't surprise me if children raised in a cult finding solace in each other was a plot point

Did we ever acknowledge that one time Cobel was talking to Graner and she called him Daddy?

Rewatching Severance and seeing Cobel going “yes, Daddy” to Graner is a jumpscare that I forgot was even a thing between them
Then he gets one tapped by Reghabi and disappears

To add a couple more things to the wishlist:
Reghabi and Cobel- I wrote this in tags on another post but I can’t even fathom what it would do to me to see Cobel admit to Reghabi that she was wrong and Reghabi was right. Idk if her character’s gotten to that point yet though; her motivations seem to be mostly self serving still (understandable). Even if we eventually get that admission, I don’t think she would go so far as to explicitly apologize. But it would still be earth shattering to me. In a good way. I also have a vision of them graduating to - or back to - a first name basis at a really meaningful moment. Maybe Cobel has to make a decision. “Harmony… please…” “…Asal…” it’s cheesy but I want it damnit
Also this is such a small thing, but Graner is still ricocheting around in my skull. He seemed to know Harmony’s whole deal pretty well and aligned with her goals rather than the company’s. What was he trying to accomplish? His goals? What was his relationship to Cobel- did he love her in some way? How will it affect the dynamic between Reghabi and Cobel if it comes out that Reghabi killed him? What if Cobel even already knows? But this is what gets stuck in my brain the most: is it possible he was being sincere in some way when he said “I’m a friend”?

SEVERENCE ANIMAL CONCEPTS - #2
+ Okay, wow. You guys really liked the first post (thank you for all the notes!) so I decided to make a part two. Again, if you want more characters feel free to ask!
SETH MILCHICK — Wolf
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Social / pack animals; his devotion to Lumon reminds me of that of a loyal dog. He's passive, doing as he's told and trying to deal with the constant disrespect of his superiors.
Wolves are often friendly and/or harmless animals. They don't actively go out to hurt people. Milchick has this false warmth about him, which I think fits the "wolf in sheep's clothing" symbolism.
He's basically a wolf leading sheep (aka MDR), he has control over them and is actively keeping them in check.
Quick, capable and intelligent. Wolves are also playful, it fits his odd personality. As well as his intimidating traits. Wolves are complex creatures, which I believe represents him well as a character. They can be a little awkward too, showing how he feels out of place in the normal world.
Wolves represent multiple things, it's hard to apply one interpretation for him but wolves represent independence and autonomy. Which Milchick has . . . in a way — but it's much different than the people on the severed floor, showing more of their difference as employees.
HARMONY COBEL — Cob Horse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First things first: COB (el) horse . . . it's in the name, so obviously I had to choose it.
Cob horses represent tradition, heritage and social status. All which fit Cobel's character: her devotion to Lumon, her family history and role as manager; Con horses tend to be seen as symbols of wealth in certain cultures. It could be another reason why Jame thought she was so special.
They require a lot of discipline due to their tempers. They're known for their hardiness, resilience and reliability. They can be stubborn horses too.
Cob horses are commonly regarded as the face of joy (and have calm personalities too) — a lot like Wolverine!Mark . . . she obviously contradicts this. Mostly due to the trauma because of Lumon. Lumon sees her as someone to keep in check because she's not a friendly, willing to please woman anymore; furthering her resentment.
Her persona as Ms. Selvig outside of Lumon fits the typical "calm, easy going" cob horse. Sort of paralleling with Mark as a severed employee.
DOUG GRANER — Hawk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since he's a guard, it plays into the "watch you like a hawk" saying — Graner is always watching, which fits the animal in my opinion.
Mostly stoic birds. Graner was pretty nonchalant and narrow with his emotions; hawks are pretty force and territorial / loyal too. Showing his devotion to Lumon.
They can be tender too, but I don't think he is. I think it's just something he can play into, such as when he tries to be friendly with o!Mark before he gets killed by Reghabi.
Not really much to say, I think it just fits him really well. He's a minor character so I don't have anything else to add.
NATALIE KALEN — Fox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've always seen Natalia as a fox, mostly due to her constant smile. Foxes sound like they're laughing at the time, therefore reminding me of her.
Foxes tend to symbolize deception / trickery. While I don't think she's really malicious or cunning, she's definitely surrounded / forced to verbalize lies, such as her relationship with The Board.
Foxes are pretty friendly. Natalie is pretty playful, mostly with Milchick and other people outside of Lumon. Plus, her also being a canine in Lumon could be why Milchick wants to communicate with her more.
Foxes are resourceful and trust their gut while making decisions. Unfortunately, Natalie probably has most of her choices controlled by Lumon; symbolizing how much they control her.
MR. DRUMMOND — Ox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oxs are loyal, hardworking animals. They're strong, dependable and practical. They're very intelligent & patient creatures; also known for their determination and perseverance.
Drummond basically contradicts a lot of the positive traits of an ox, mostly using his strength to serve Lumon anyway he can. He's very intimidating and he knows it — and judging by the finale, he's capable of causing fatality.
Oxs symbolizes sacrifice, which reflects his feelings on the goats and his eventual fate at the hand of i!Mark. They're also associated with hard work and burdens.

Hate to say it, but re-watching season 1, the og middle management is actually kinda wholesome? They work together well (in torturing the innies, but you know...) doing espionage shit, they support each other (Milchick tells Mark to say something nice about Cobel's new office, Cobel praises Milchick's initiative), and Graner seems to actually like Cobel as a person?? I know, I know, there's that daddy kink undertone but besides that, he is actually kind to her unprompted. She doesn't seem to give a shit, but still. It's nice! It's the Harmony Cobel gang against the world board (the innies are drowning, you say, but this is not about them).
