Douglas Sirk - Written on the Wind (1956) Another of Sirk's amazing looking melodramas with subtle or not so subtle jabs at American society this like many of his films stars Rock Hudson, playing the part that he plays so well, that of the sensitive paragon of virtue, much as in All That Heaven Allows. Here he plays the working class best friend of an oil heir in Texas who gets embroiled in the machinations and dramas of poor rich white people. On the surface this looks and feels like a template for the soap operas that would be so popular in the 80s, like Dallas or Dynasty, following the love lifes, betrayals and eccentric behaviors of the very rich. The film in fact is so full of characters that have become absolute clichés that it's hard to escape that conclusion. You get the wise but impotent patriarch, the alcoholic and choleric son, the daughter who is sexually wanton but actually a good person under it all, the son's wife who is mistreated and really too good to be in that relationship and the good guy who works as a proxy for the audience just shoved in the middle of it all. If you dig a little deeper you get some of the sharp criticisms of society that are present in other Sirk movies: greed and the "american dream" are ultimately destructive without love and a connection to your inner self. You can be as rich as Croesus and your life will still be crap if you are not emotionally fulfilled and your actual wealth can be an impediment to that fulfilment as you lose touch with what is really important in life. A fun and surprisingly deep watch.
