no really dr stone is filled with so much interpersonal drama. we've got multiple eternally oblivious pining couples, a complicated web of attempted murder, a divorce, both political marriages/relationships and just plain fake ones, a main character's SECRET BROTHER shows up in the third act. This is a soap opera.

Happy Stone Day, everyone!

On this day, when celebrating the onion man is what most people indulge on, let's also turn our eyes to the fascinating civilization that is Ishigami village, in this mini post (compared to what I usually do anyway).

Starting with the reason I am doing this in the first place, Stone Day. It is a celebration from Ishigami Village that takes place in January 4th, which happens to be Senku's birthday, likely an easter egg left by Byakuya in the hundred tales. Unfortunately we weren't shown anything regarding what this celebration involves.

As the manga itself points out, Stone day is significant in several ways, for one, 1/4 is i-shi in japanese, which also means Stone. It is Senku's birthday (and if you've been following me you'll know that the day Senku was born in, January 4th 2004, was the day that Nasa's Spirit rover landed on Mars).

Another tradition is of course the grand bout, which there isn't much left to say about since it was explained in detail in the series, even down to its specific rules

Rule 6 is the only one that wasn't relevant in the series as far as I can tell.

It's been also vaguely implied that there are other fighting tournaments that take place in the village, which makes sense, since why would you keep an open arena just to use it once very 20 years or so?

However it's never explained how this tradition started to begin with; did it exist in treasure island and disappeared after the Ishigami branched off, or did it start with them in the mainland?

The society structure of contemporary treasure island is substantially different, with a number of small villages that are all (at least in theory) managed by a centralized government composed of the master (or "head" much to our amusement) and the prime minister, where most power is held by the master, who also serves as the main religious figure, being the one who largely keeps the hundred tales, which are passed from generation to generation along his lineage.

In Ishigami village things kinda flipped and thus spawned a system that is at least half matriarchal so to speak. Now political power is split between the chief and the priestess, where the chief holds most executive authority while the priestess holds most of the religious power, and it is the lineage of the priestess that keeps the tales and that power in-family, with the chief being some allegedly suited rando from the village.

Even though it's the obligation of the priestess to marry the chief, she is rarely if ever shown as a subordinate to him and both can be seen directing the village, which I think it's very interesting. The anime went as far as expanding on this, by implying that it was Ruri who told Kokuyo to abdicate his position to Senku.

Sneakily she gets to keep being the priestess without having to be engaged, and we see her taking leading roles from then on.

Now I've talked about religious figures but what is their religion to begin with? Hard to tell, we know that they believe in multiple gods who control the forces of nature such as lightning. Similarly it's also been shown that prior to Senku's arrival, they believed themselves to be the only humans on earth, at least some of them believed the earth was flat, and most bizarrely, they believed the moon was something akin to a floating lake, owning to its small apparent size, however that works.

Perhaps they took note of how water tends to form spheres due to surface tension? This reminds me of how some scientist a few centuries ago (but idr who at this moment) believed the moon to be a solid mass of congealed air.

The last thing I want to bring up is the Ishigami village rope, reportedly made with a special technique that's unique to them.

It is also said that the rope reflects rank and profession somehow, but this is not reflected in any noticeable way on the series itself. Boichi probably hadn't been told about this when he designed all 40 known villagers in the span of one week.

The rope is worn somewhere around the body, and it contains a single red thread spun into it, serving as a symbol of kinship among them.

For now I'll leave it at that, as it's getting pretty late in the day, and pretty much all of this is written on the wiki article to begin with. Hope you enjoyed it, I'll see you all some other day.

My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s Chapter 212 (“Final Part: Stone to Space”)

My thoughts after reading Chapter 212:

01, (I did, indeed, eat rice after I read the previous chapter :D) Ohh, blue light, instead of green? :O Is that just a colored manga pages thing, or are the colors different because this second worldwide petrification device had a different battery from the first one?

02. Senku and Kohaku in the colored chapter art, and Ukyo, too! :)

03. I was NOT expecting them to head to Treasure Island first! But it makes sense to revive the people here first so that the Ishigami Village folks on the mainland are the last ones to be revived, for an emotional grand finale to the second worldwide petrification :D

04. Soyuz and Amaryllis have been revived! And Kohaku and Amaryllis were happy to see each other! :)

05. Senku is legendary on Treasure Island? Hundred Tales aside, I’m sure he was a popular conversation topic before they got petrified, especially because Soyuz was there for all of Ishigami Village’s post-Grand Bout, pre-Treasure Island scientific innovations! :D And Senku is... just kinda dealing with the affection XD

06. Treasure Island... had a secret mission :O And is it just me, or did Soyuz get even more muscular from last time? XD I guess having a grueling secret mission will do that to you!

07. Back to Japan, and Ruri has been revived! Kohaku looks so happy to have her back, and Ruri’s so glad that Kohaku is alright! :’) Ruri’s so strong, being able to lift Kohaku up like that! :O Even though I think Kohaku was one of the lightest people in the motorcycle chase way back, she’s still fifty-two kilograms!

08. Oh, Chrome... again with the gorilla talk, and again with the head lumps XD Senku’s right about speaking too soon :D

09. So Chrome was slightly younger than Ruri before the second worldwide petrification! Hmm, interesting! I thought they were both already eighteen at the time of the Grand Bout, but I suppose not!

10. Ruri was so up for it, Chrome! You talked about being the same age, and then she talked you about growing up, and... arrgghhh!! :O Maybe they SHOULD have let Chelsea go on talking... Poor Ruri... so close, yet so far... XD

11. Chalk and Sagara are back! :’) Chalk’s ears are pointed up, and Sagara has tusks now... They’ve grown up a lot in eight years! But, they still remember Suika, and of course, Suika remembers them! :’) They’re both so happy that they’re crying, and Chalk’s trying to lick Suika to death, and Suika looks ecstatic! :D And even Senku’s proud of Chalk and Sagara for surviving this long! :) (At least, I think he was the one speaking in the second panel.)

12. They protected everybody building a stone wall around the petrified Ishigami Village folks and the kingdom of science citizens! :O Two animals, each carrying one small stone in their mouths back and forth, building a wall one stone at a time, all this time... :O That’s so sweet... :’) and so amazing... :O

13. Chalk and Sagara both have families now! :) They have little puppies and little piglets! Or... boarlets? XD I thought that they were near a watermelon patch at first, but those markings turned out to be from some of the boarlets :D

14. Suika realized that they have other responsibilities now, and Chalk and Sagara walked away... :(

15. ...but after they were offered food, they came rushing back! :D This is SO Inagaki, giving us a satisfying and/or heart-wrenching moment to make us feel strong emotion, and then following it up with a humorous moment to make us smile! :) This happened earlier in the chapter with Kohaku and Ruri, and Ruri and Chrome, too! And Suika’s so happy to see them back! :)

16. Francois made sushi! :D And Senku and the others... just straight-up floated into outer space from sheer happiness, hahaha! XD And, whoa, Senku and Kohaku’s stomachs look huge after they ate lots of sushi! :O

17. The mainland folks had a secret project going on as well... a dam made of stone (and bamboo)! :O (Also, Ruri looked very cute walking on that bridge :D) And that’s where Chalk and Sagara got the idea to protect everybody with a wall made of stone... they’re so smart and caring! :)

18. So the rocket will be launched from Treasure Island! I thought it would be launched from the mainland... but of COURSE Treasure Island makes sense! It’s where Byakuya and the others lived... it’s the birthplace of the first generation of humans after the first worldwide petrification... it’s where the Hundred Tales began! :D It’s so fitting that this will be where they launch the rocket from - the rocket where people will eat ramen in space again! :D A lot of things are prepared, so they just have to start building the rocket itself... and Chrome and Suika and Sai will have to start building the return vessel in secret! I hope the next chapter will show them recruiting more people for the secret project... maybe they already did on Treasure Island? Time to go find out! :)

Let’s do this.

My name is Kohaku Ishigami, I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for the last year I have been the one and only spider-woman. You know the rest. Lost my mom, saved the city, nearly failed my second year of highschool, saved the city again, and watched my step-dad go back up into space. 

“Kohaku?” Ruri called out softly, reaching across the table to touch her sister’s forehead. “Are you feeling alright, you look a little tired.”

Kohaku startled, knocking her coffee cup and sloshing some over onto her hand. She yelped, licking at the wound as Ruri cleaned up the mess on the table.

As she finally zoned back into the world around her, she saw the concerned look in her sister’s eyes.

“U’m fune,” Kohaku reassured, words distorted by her finger. She wiped her finger before lacing her hands in front of her and leaning forward with a knowing grin. “How’s Chrome?”

Ruri’s face quickly flushed and she averted her eyes, mouth opening and closing as she tried to speak. Kohaku snickered, finally taking a careful sip of her drink.

“He’s fine… He just got back from a field trip to Mount Fuji.”

“Did he bring you back a rock?”

“He brought me back two rocks,” Ruri sighed. “You’d think I was the geologist with how many I have.”

“I think it’s cute. He’s like a penguin.”

The two laughed and settled into a pleasant silence as they enjoyed each other's company.

Following in their mother’s footsteps, Ruri had become a world famous celebrity. She’d published two short story collections in the last year. The stories were ones Lillian used to tell her before bed, with the first collection being dedicated to her after her passing. It made Kohaku happy to see the stories being so well loved.

“I hope spider-woman's okay.”

“Huh?”

Ruri nodded at something behind Kohaku, and she turned to find a news story being played of Spider-woman taking out The Master. It went on to reveal the identity of The Master as Ibara, the CEO of the Endless Treasure jewelry company, who’d killed the previous CEO ten years before. Just another Tuesday night for her, really.

“I’m sure she’s fine.” Kohaku shrugged.

Raising an eyebrow, Ruri frowned. “I think she looks a little tired.”

“Well I’m sure she has other stuff going on.”

“Senku said you haven’t been sleeping.”

“I thought we were talking about Spider-woman.” Kohaku glared.

“Kohaku,” Ruri sighed.

“Ruri.”

The once pleasant silence turned tense as the two stared at each other, determined not to cave. It was only broken when Kohaku’s phone rang.

Senku’s caller ID showed up.

“I have to-” Before she could finish her sentence, Ruri reached across the table and snatched her phone away.

“Senku, settle a debate.”

“Nee-chan,” Kohaku hissed.

Ruri just raised a single finger up to her sister, indicating she needed to wait. Kohaku sighed, dropping her head to the table.

“Wonderful! I’ll let her know.” She smiled, closing out the call and sliding Kohaku’s phone back across the table. “Senku agrees the city won’t blow up without you in a week.”

“I feel like I missed something.”

“You need a break,” Ruri smiled softly, resting her chin in the palms of her hands and brushing kohaku’s bangs out of her face. “Senku has hidden your suit, and you won’t find it until he thinks you’re well rested. Ryusui can handle things for a week.” Kohaku grumbled incoherently, droopy eyes looking up at Ruri. “Now how’s school?”

A thud sounded through the cafe as Kohaku slammed her forehead back onto the table.

Those who know me from time back in the fandom know that I was comically wrong every single time I predicted something. I can't believe the one thing I ended up being right about was Chrome caving in and marrying Ruri before making the time machine work, which wasn't even a prediction, it was just a plot point in a fanfic I wrote out of spite after the manga first ended. Maybe I'll do a little trivia post about the chapter in a bit.
