So I edited the text out of here. I just really like the panel layout of this one. And the colors! The colors of Absolute are just GREAT! And the lines are so solid! Basically everything about Absolute is great! Actually, all of the back-up stories for Gotham Nocturne are fantastic. I don't care if you read Gotham Nocturne itself, all of the back-up stories thus far have been excellent and you should read it for the back-up stories alone! Just look at how pretty and solid the art is here! (Even if there isn't a background here specifically.)

I just love this scene and you've gotta love Sorrow's expression here! Dr. Mead is just... SO done with everything! And you've gotta give it to her! It takes balls of cast iron steel to kick Mr. Freeze in the babymakers! Honestly, good for her!

Late Night Conversations - Part 6
Tumblr media
Fanfiction _ SeaQuest
Fictober 2022/ Prompt #24: “Is this safe?”
Summary: Annabelle’s injury was worse than they realized. Part 6 of “Late Night Conversations.”
Author’s Note: This cold and writer’s block are busting my tail, but I’ll persist on! Short bit for today.
……..
“I need some help in here!”
“Harris, can you hear me? Ensign Harris? Annabelle!”
Flashes of blurred faces, the feeling of being lifted and held close, shifting into bigger, stronger arms, a bright neon glow, and darkness. So much darkness.
“I need you to stay with me, Annabelle. C’mon, talk to me.”
“… need to stay awake…”
Why was everyone so concerned? It was just a nap, and her eyelids were so heavy. She was trying to tell them, but no one seemed to be listening.
“… slurred speech… how long… possible concussion or blood clot…”
“Is this safe?”
She just needed to sleep. Why couldn’t anyone just let her sleep?
“… need to get her to Med Bay…”
“Just hang on, Belle.”
“I’ve gotcha.”
“Annabelle? ANNABELLE!”
Everything hurt when she opened her eyes, especially her head. She blinked several times, and even the dim light seemed bright. Where was she? Her head was pounding, and her mouth was dry. She closed her eyes again, trying to refocus. Should she be this dizzy? She must’ve made a sound because she heard movement to her side. She wanted to move her head to see who was there but the pounding sensation in her head was too much. Her eyes fluttered, and she saw Dagwood leaning over her, concern evident. She opened her mouth to speak, and darkness surrounded her again.
“I hope no one who reads this book has been quite as miserable as Susan and Lucy were that night; but if you have been - if you've been up all night and cried till you have no more tears left in you - you will know that there comes in the end a sort of quietness. You feel as if nothing is ever going to happen again.”
Annabelle’s eyes opened, and she rolled her head to the side. Tim O’Neill sat in a chair by her bed, a copy of “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” open in his hands. “That part always makes me cry,” she said softly, and Tim looked up with wide eyes. “Hi,” she said, giving him a small smile.
He looked so relieved, a smile splitting his face as he dropped the book, and reached for one of her hands. “You’re awake.” She smiled down at him, lids still heavy, throat still dry. “You’re awake,” he repeated, leaning forward and placing a chaste kiss on her knuckles. “Thank God.”
Annabelle tried to lift her head, but quickly realized that was a mistake. She leaned back, eyes closed, trying to remember what happened. “Where…?”
“Med Bay,” Tim told her. “You’re in Med Bay. Hold on.” Another kiss to her knuckles, and he was gone. Annabelle closed her eyes, listening to the gentle hum from the machine she realized she was attached to, and felt herself starting to doze.
“Annabelle?” Her eyes flickered open to look up into Dr. Wendy Smith’s stunning blue eyes. Next to her was Captain Nathan Bridger. Dagwood and Tim stood at the end of the bed, quiet concern lacing their features. “Can you hear me?”
Annabelle closed her eyes, giving a slight nod. It didn’t hurt as much this time. “What happened?” Her voice was no more than a raspy whisper, and Wendy handed her a small cup of water. She sipped it slowly then tried to sit up.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Bridger said, placing an arm out for her to stop. “You gave us quite the scare, Ensign.”
Annabelle frowned, reaching up and gently touching the gauze that circled her head. “I fell in the Mag-Lev, cut my head,” she said, more to herself than anyone else. “Tim… Tim was there… with a handkerchief.”
“You passed out when you tried to stand,” Tim told her. “Dagwood carried you here.”
Annabelle frowned, trying to remember. “We got hit?” Bridger nodded.
“An experimental war vessel. They did a lot of damage before we put her down.” Annabelle’s head was swimming with questions, and Bridger could tell. “Don’t worry, Ensign,” he said, laughing. “You’ll be fully briefed when you return to duty.”
“When will that be, sir?”
Bridger laughed again. “Soon, I hope. We miss you on the Bridge.”
She gave him a small smile. “Thank you, sir.”
“You got tossed around pretty badly in the Mag-Lev,” Wendy said. “I was worried you might’ve had a blood clot or a intracranial hematoma. You’re lucky it was just a concussion. Severe, but still.”
Annabelle closed her eyes. “All those years jumping through time portals, but this lands me in Med Bay.”
Wendy smiled, giving her friend’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll let you get some rest. Dagwood, could you bring up some lunch?” Dagwood nodded.
“Dagwood,” Annabelle called as he turned his back to leave. “Thank you.” The daggar gave her a smile and a nod before heading out with determination.
“We’re due back on the Bridge, Lieutenant,” Bridger said, nodding in Tim’s direction.
“Yes, sir.” He moved to the side of her bed, leaning down. “Just so you know, this is what it looks like to visit someone in Sick Bay.” She grinned, rolling her eyes, and he gave her a playful smile before following Bridger and Dagwood’s lead.
Wendy’s brows raised. “My, my, my. You two seem quite chummy.”
Annabelle sighed. “We’re just friends, Wendy.”
Wendy arched a brow. “Does he know that? He’s been here consistently since you were brought in, reading, praying, and holding your hand.” Annabelle couldn’t help the smile curling her lips; she was certain she was blushing.
“Really? Well, I mean, he’s a good friend,” Annabelle assured the docter, nestling back into the pillows, and closing her eyes. “A very, very good friend.”
“Mmmmhmmm.” Wendy knew Annabelle would tell her everything later – she always did. Besides, she’d picked up enough from Tim’s constant visits to have a pretty good idea what was going on. “I’ll let you rest.”
