“WORMS WILL CRAWL OVER YOUR face! Ghosts will roam the aisles!” Dr. Silkini warns as the Frankenstein monster slowly comes to life onstage, “If the lights go out, stay in your seats!” Suddenly possessed by a fit of rage, the monster strangles the hunchbacked assistant and charges into the audience with a roar. As the front row squeals in anticipation, there is a blinding flash, and the lights suddenly go off.
Pandemonium erupts in the pitch black theater. There are screams, macabre laughter, wild howling. Glowing skulls appear and disappear. Something slimy slaps your head and slithers over your face. You furiously bat away what indeed feels like worms. A strange luminous form floats overhead. On the stage, a kick-line of skeletons dance and then fly apart. The little boy next to you turns, and his face glows in the dark.A moment later, the logo for Universal Pictures flickers to life on the movie screen. Everyone giggles with relief as they settle back to watch a cheesy horror film.
A campy interactive horror show with a mad scientist? No, this isn’t The Rocky Horror Picture Show—though it is related. This is Dr. Silkini’s Asylum of Horrors, one of the many midnight spook shows that were ubiquitous in America from the 1930s to the 1960s.
------
Movie theaters should bring this back to bring people in.

Horror Film Poster Research
Tumblr media
For my research into horror film posters I focused on the old retro posters as I like the style of them and they seem more unsettling then modern day posters. The top left poster gives a good insight into the film by blending three different scenes into the poster. Although it still draws your eyes to the main character and emphasises him with a glowing/smokey effect. The type on this poster is very different to most with its style. They have bent the type to arrange it around the characters as well as using a yellow stroke and white highlights, this makes the type stand out well despite all that’s going on in the background.
The poster on the top right is very realistic. Your eyes are instantly drawn to the axe because of the red blood on it and the strong highlight. This poster has a lot of depth giving you a lot to look at but making the focus points very obvious.  In the background the moon and the house become clear because of the light coming from them. This is less obvious in the house as its only coming from a small window but I think this adds to the atmosphere and how unsettling the poster is. This poster gives you a good view of what the plot could be like and the general feeling of the film. The typography on this poster stands out against the dark poster. I like the font they've used as its very unique and fits the style of the poster. There’s also a phrase added above the title which gives you even more of an idea of the plot.
The poster on the bottom left is different from the others as its only using red. Having only red instantly draws you to the poster. They have used the red to put emphasise on the type. This poster is the oldest out of the four which his why its advertising a on stage show instead of a film. I still wanted to include this though as I really like this style and its retro appearance. I like how the skeleton is quite simple but adds a lot to the poster especially his red eyes. The typography in this poster is very varied throughout, using different fonts, sizes, colours, and styles. The first bits of types at the top of the poster ‘ON STAGE-IN PERSON’ and ‘SPIRITUALISTIC SEANCE’ are both all capital letters and white on the black background. This makes them less of a focus point the the ‘Dr. Silkini’ type which is bigger and red with a white stroke. Then there is two bits of cursive type on the page which are both arced to fit better on the page. Although I think this was unnecessary for the ‘and’ which could've just been placed to fit under the previous type. ‘GHOST’ is the word that stands out most on the page because of the bubbly effect it has.
The final poster is a German zombie film. This poster like the second is very realistic and detailed. I like the impression of lighting in this creating the shadow behind the hand. I like how this seems like a frozen scene from the film with glass frozen whilst shattering. I also like how you can only see the hand, it makes the poster ominous and leaves you wanting to see what the rest looks like. The white typography at the top probably hints to the plot and for this it works well as the size it is and the white on the dark background. Then what would be the title at the bottom really stands out as its bright red and the last word changes style and size to emphasise it.
