Introduction: Kaworu Nagisa is a genetic hybrid of human and the 1st Angel - Adam, born as a result of the Contact Experiment. He has lived and looked like a regular human up until entering the Central Dogma. The proximity of another Angel (Lilith) has resulted in a sudden change in gene expression, activating dormant Angel genes. The result was some kind of a rapid transformation/metamorphosis from an almost fully human body to that of an Angel. It has been referred to as Tabris, the 17th Angel, with this particular form being described as the High Angel Gene Expression form.

Anatomy and physiology: Standing at over 3 meters tall, Tabris is the second smallest Angel after microscopic Ireul. Its limited growth compared to other Angels is a result of constraints put on its body by the human part of the DNA. In general proportions, Tabris resembles Adam and subsequently - the Evas, with the exception of its overtly elongated limbs. Like Adam, it emits light, though not nearly as bright, and sprouts Wings of Light, spanning over 18 meters in width with an additional tail-like structure

During the metamorphosis, its core has resurfaced to the center of the chest, changing its position from the one more akin to that of the human heart. The central core containing S² Engine is very tough and resistant to damage but very sensitive to touch. It can become malleable and flesh-like if the AT Field is lowered enough. Instead of beating, it produces a soft humming sound similar to that of the Sun. Two smaller cores underneath it seem to help redirect generated energy to the lower parts of the body.

Additional core situated inside the neck area works as a transmiter, condensing energy from the S² engine before relaying it to the head. Such adaptation is a result of a much higher and centralised brain function compared to other Angels, which requires more energy to work properly.

Excess energy manifests itself in a form of three halos - two vertical ones with spike-like extrusions above the head and a horizontal one around the neck core.

As a member of asexually reproducing species, post-metamorphosis Tabris lacks any sexual characteristics, both internal and external.

Due to the volatile state of its DNA, there is a possibility of further mutations occurring if not killed or removed from the Central Dogma in time.

With enough damage delt to the central core, the transformation can be reverted, though not completely. The resulting form known as the Low Angel Gene Expression form (sketch of this form) is almost identical to pre-metamorphosis Kaworu, with the exception of visible main core and red markings adorning his body (basically looking exactly like the draft sketch) It is a result of the damaged core not being able to provide enough energy to sustain its fully changed form.

Thanks to the extremely powerful AT Field, Tabris' main core can be completely destroyed only by either him voluntary lowering the AT Field or being pierced by the Spear of Longinus. Destruction of the S² Engine results in Angel’s death.

Design notes: It is by no means a wholly new design, just a mere evolution of the ones that came before it. Two main inspirations for the design (like always) have been draft sketches and Adam. With Kaworu’s body being that of a human and Adam being a humanoid entity, I've decided to stick with a clearly humanoid design for Tabris. As much as I love more abstract Angels, I feel like this Angel/human duality is essential to Kaworu's character.

The most drastic change in this instance of the design is its shoulder area. I think these pylon-like structures work much better than spikes as it likens Tabris more to Adam (from what I gathered, these serve as restraints for Adam and Evas but I don't really care :v). Same goes for the change in proportions. Lengthy limbs add to the uncanniness and distance the silhouette from that of a regular human.

At one point I had plans for a comic for this AU, which plot has been - I kid you not - revealed to me in a dream xD It has never come to a fruition because I suck at writing compelling stories

My friends and I had this discussion about Kaworu about what sort of character he is. He's not a main character. Not exactly ancillary. Or even a one-off. He's technically one of the psychologically-centered angels without using a breach of boundary to communicate. He's such an anomalous guy. And yet. Very integral to the framework of Eva. He appears right before the endgame of either source material (NGE and Rebuilds).

Either appearance is initially marked by him pointing out especially important revelations that help tie into the material's themes.

He only appears for scant amount of minutes compared to everyone with loads more depth. And yet. He has gained as much traction as others in the cast.

I still remember when we got our first few breadcrumbs of Kaworu in FINAL content. It was fantastic and interesting and endearing all at once that someone with such scarce screen time gained that much fanfare. It was only breadcrumbs. And yet. We were wondering how Kaworu would act in the framework of the Rebuilds, now that the cautionary tale had shifted elsewhere. Or making sense of the Groundwork of Evangelion 3.0's horrifying bits. It's all because of the way Kaworu's appearance is synonymous with altruism. Of love without condition. His kindness hits close. That someone who's legitimately kind feels surreal in environments comprised of emotional neglect.

Those moments carry a weight that hits close. That often, moments of kindness, altruistic people exist for only a moment. Those moments give birth to hope in a noxious cesspit of an environment. To Shinji. To us. In the same breath, the narrative never paints him as a savior. Never paints him as holier than thou despite his angelic status. So this really sells the idea that in a human(oid) sense he's not above anyone (which is why I loved that writers omitted the 'class prince' angle in the drafts). He's important and yet. He's just someone. But it's important that he is just someone because it sells the point that kindness can come from anywhere. That there is a someone for you. That all you need to do is offer a hand to a soul in need.

And I think that's pretty neat actually.

Was unfortunate enough to have another long shift today, so I missed episode 7. Then again it seems I was not missing much? See I like to keep a few pages open on my phone of people I follow and during my breaks I'd pull them up to see what people were saying. Literally nobody talked about it.

Spoiler commentary, as per the usual

I am going to describe this episode as a 'frosting sandwich.' On paper it sounds amazing but when you bite into it more than one time you realize how little substance there is

-For a second the recap had me thinking I was watching the wrong episode

-Sin is remarkably un-traumatized for someone who was almost just forced into committing genocide like an hour ago

-Holy fuck this really needed more than eight episodes this pacing is tripping over itself

-Hi Bridget! How did you get in the white house

-look I know she's human but that was pathetic oh my god. That was like completely engineered as a flimsy motivation to get Unika moving

-'Bridget helped us' bitch who's we??

-Well at least Unika finally did something! And then to make up for it she immediately got kidnapped

-YAY MORE PARADIGM ngl most of the value of this series is giving Croc and the five Paradigm fans something nice for once

-'we're all here!' all six characters given arbitrary narrative relevance at least

-Yaaaaay baby asks nicely for help even if he wasn't Gear Jesus I;m sure they'd still help bc he's a polite boy

-I saw this episode described as Evangelion-esque and I see why. It's basically Operation Yashima again, and the animation tanks 2/3 of the way through

-(so if Sin is Shinji who's supposed to be Kaworu)

-holy fuck who thought those stills were okay this looks so cheap

-Congrats to the Pot fans, Answer fans etc for your single still. I mean it's something at least...?

-Group fighting scene cool. It did what it was supposed to, which was look cool and be totally bereft of depth

-...so we just immediately dropped that plot point with Axl huh. I was talking with a friend about a postcanon recovery thing with him and Sin after the series ends but that whole think just got neutralized. Ohhh he's gonna be mad

-seriously why did they just go 'hi I'm fine! Bye I'm vanishing from the plot now!' this feels like a first draft with hasty last second edits

-Ky and Dizzy are fine now huh. No build up on that or resolution or anything. What virus, what plot? Are they saying they could have un-fridged them five episodes ago??

-Why are like 90% of the plot threads this series raised given no payoff. Like...Ky and Dizzy are fine. Axl is fine. The Gears either having to die or leave just gets skimmed over. I'm still befuddled at Elphelt getting nuked and that being completely useless and negligible

Ok so I'm annoyed but it's kinda funny. I guess there's no point in me writing that fic I was gonna anymore because most of what I was going to do just...happened. Like goddamn I even had a part about Dizzy throwing Sin at the core fastball-special-style. I know it was pretty cliche stuff but that's five pages wasted *blows party horn* guess that's on me for being slow

Part of me is not opposed to this just being lighthearted and flashy but it felt so much like they were building up to something with Sin having to make a difficult decision and then it felt like the writers just tapped out. Unika got slightly more narrative relevance but at this point I think I'm just waiting for her to show up in the game to give her more than two personality traits. I don't know how it is that she was so super powerful for the first half and then immediately turned into a wet paper towel for the latter half

I love the way you interpret Makima, feels like you're the only who really gets her sometimes. So I was so pleased to find out you liked Kaworu! I'd be interested on any thoughts you have on him (or about nge in general)

See, I’m definitely not the only one! Though I love her deeply, I can’t ever see myself as her top fan, because there’s many people who love Makima, and I’m happy about it. If so many people didn’t love her I wouldn’t find new art that challenges and intensifies my own personal love.

My favorite Kaworu is the draft Kaworu because he is a messy human. It’s my favorite trait across all the Kaworus that this one self harms. So his sacrifice was not so noble as it is in the original, but from a genuine scared boy who does truly want to die. Its also this Kaworu that rejects Shinji. Isn’t that interesting? He was self serving and human in a way no Kaworu was— not even the manga Kaworu, who was still distinctly an alien in his emotions. But I can only like draft Kaworu because the original one exists to contrast against him. I wouldn’t be so fasincated by the portrayal if the humanity lover didn’t exist.

Kaworu is the only one who says “I love you” in the original, he’s devoid of the complications the other characters in Shinji’s life have, of the REAL people around him with their own inner worlds, which is why his death hurts Shinji so badly. He’ll never meet another person like Kaworu. The one in the draft is scarred, we don’t really know his true intentions, but Shinji’s love is even more intense, and more distinctly romantic, even commented on by other characters. So this Kaworu also leads to a very different interpretation of Shinji: one who wanted to find solace in a fellow self-hater rather than comfort from a concept. This Kaworu is also quite rude to him, so his attraction to him felt very much like a teenage boy and realistic.

I love every Kaworu, but that weird boy is my favorite.
